Outlaw's Potential Value
From viewing all the posts in the last few days, it seems as if Travis and Frye have been the main players behind all of the trades. The main problem is people give Travis a wide range of values.
So I'm asking you Bedge Nation, what do you feel Travis is worth in a trade? I'd like people to elaborate on why they've come to their conclusion. If you think he's only worth another role player let us know why (maybe he's always going to be a 6th man, he's already reached his ceiling, etc).
This is by far one of the smartest blogs in sports, I'm interested to see what the majority of us think.

I went with a fringe starter
probably a player near their 30th birthday, but if we package multiple players (which is the most likely scenario should we make a trade), it wouldn’t surprise me to see us get a solid starter in return

Nothing.
He is great off the bench.
If we were to trade him I would expect something really good. Otherwise we are just kicking ourselves in the foot.
I’m talking at least a starter.
but with martell back
he is expendable, he is going to lose minutes, if we can get something half decent for him I say its worth taking. But thing is with the way the team is rolling right now, I wouldn’t expect any changes at all. Maybe something right before the deadline…

If we get something half-way decent for him, where will Mr. Half-way decent play?
The players we have who aren’t playing are great injury protection.

I think so.
He’s the only player on the team that I consider “cringe-worthy” – that is, I literally cringe every time he checks into the game, receives the ball, or guards the ball-handler. Even Sergio’s porous (though much-improved) defense and ball handling don’t put him into that category.

Like I said, he's much improved.
But I used to cringe every time he checked into the game – that doesn’t happen anymore.
Travis’ bball IQ is so low, that I don’t think he’ll ever make that sort of improvement.

Best pg defender we have?
Do you mean defender who is a PG?
or
Defender who guards point guards?
Three reasons Sergio appears more improved on defense than he actually is:
1. Jarrett Jack is gone. Having two small guards in the second unit made it difficult to match up against other teams back courts. Now he has a longer help defender that he can funnel his man to if he gets into trouble.
2. Joel Pryzbilla is on the second unit. Having a legit seven footer in the middle keeps the offense from trying to drive against Sergio so much. They don’t do it because they know their shot might get block, not because Sergio is stopping them. The middle was much more open when Frye was trying to hold it down.
3. Everyone on the team seems more comfortable with the idea of team defense. Outlaw is a better defender this year, Batum is a maniac, and Frye is in his natural position.
Sergio might seem a little better at defense, but I still think he’s below average.

I went with "Sixth Man"
At this point, trading Travis will be addition by subtraction…
Just like the Z-Bo deal, and just like the Jarrett Jack deal.

Hey now.
“Sixth man” is higher than I value him – I’d take a role player for him, or a draft pick and an expiring contract/3rd-string 3. I think he has higher value around the league than I have for him.

Just because Outlaw might lose a few minutes and is being showcased out east doesn't mean we need to cut and run!
Name any player one for one that is reasonable that would be better for the blazers.
I am so flabbergasted as to why we drop our best 3pt shooter just like that. He is worth a ton even if he just sat in the corner and waited for passes so he could drain open threes. Except he is even more than that!
This viewpoint is starting to grow on me.
I really like Travis as a third option at SF; ha can hit the three, but he has at times been a liability. I think he is going to have a bit of a culture shock regarding the amount of minutes he WON"T be getting once Martell is back. As a result, his attitude towards his status as a role player might largely affect whether or not we move him.
I heart taxes.
Travis' trade value is weird to me.
I keep coming back to it as what entices a LeBron-chasing team to give up a borderline all-star for the RLEC.
Give up a good (but highly paid) player, get back 2010 cap room to chase that free agent class . . . not enough.
Throw in Trout for $5mil a year? Doable.
So I’m not sure how to equate that on a stand-alone basis.

Yeah, Trout is one of those guys
a team could pick up to justify a salary dump. Kinda like Crittendon/little Gasol were last year or Yi was in the Jefferson salary dump. It’d be tough matching salaries to get a decent player back if Travis were to be moved on his own.
That makes a lot of sense.

I think part of it is how overpaid the player is (as in how big of a salary dump and how desperate the team is to dump salary). All else being equal, Rashard Lewis could be more easily obtained because of his obnoxiously large and lengthy contract, as opposed to a guy like Shane Battier who has a reasonable contract.

Here is the deal:
First off I understand that Travis may have the highest trade value among our tradeable assets, but what we have to do is look at what the difference between what Martell and Travis may bring and what Martell and Travis bring TO the team.
Yes some will freak out at Travis’ “crazy” fadeaway jumpers but the statistics show that even though it looks bad, this year Travis has a .500 efg% good for 6th on the team and ahead of Roy, Oden and Aldridge, so even though it does not look good it is effective.
“Well his PER is below the league average” well ok he is right around 15, the league average and his career per is 14.9 so by that definition Travis is an average player.
Webster by comparison had a 12 per last year compared to Travis’ 15.7.
If we look at this years PER Travis is still at 14.9 and is better than Richard Jefferson, Thad Young, Jeff Green and Peja’s and close to Stephen Jackson, Hedo, and Thorton.
Now if Webster brought his 12 per to this season, he would be around players such as Kleiza, Jared Dudley ,Quentin Richardson, Jarvis Hayes, and rookie Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics?sort=per&qual=true&pos=sf&seasonType=2&action=login&appRedirect=http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics3fsort3dper26qual3dtrue26pos3dsf26seasonType3d2
Notice Batum, our starter, has the highest per of any Blazer sf in a long time and we are going to sit a 16 and 15 per/game player for one who has a career average of 12?
The only way i would do that is if I got a comparable increase in our pg per, as in I am ok losing 3 on our sf per ONLY if we trade for a starting pg that has a +3 per over Blake. Blake is at about 15 right now so that would mean the starting pg would have to have a per of 18 (Webster 12 and PG1 18= 30 compared to Travis15 and Blake 15=30)
Here is a list of pgs that have an 18 per
Nash=18.87
Rondo=18.73
Calderon=18.16
Nate Robinson=17.88
Kidd=17.86
now 4 of those are close to untouchable and why would we want Nate Robinson? If we can get one of those pgs for Outlaw and RLEC then I am all for it but we are not going to get one of those guys save for a miracle.
Some may say that Webster has a lower per due to the fact that he plays against the starters and Travis plays against backups. Well ok that may be true for a while but lets take a closer look at the situation.
True Webster does start and play against the starters at the beginning of the game, but Travis plays the end of the game once the players are heated up and ready to go, having an entire game to get into rhythm, making that point moot.
Some may point out that “Webster plays better with the team and he plays within the team game,” yet Nate has enough trust in him to let him play when the game is on the line and even call the final play for him as in the Atl case and he nailed it FTW.
“Well Webster is still a better 3pt shooter!” Up until this season, you could say that, but in fact Travis is on pace to hit as many 3pters as Webster did all last season while taking far less.
“OK well he brings D better than Travis”, well that is debatable but this is not, Batum is a better defender than Webster will ever dream to be and we can all agree with that and that is why has has an invaluable place on this team.
Travis did make some noise in the summer about wanting to be a starter someday but around friends and family, it is always fun to think of what may be, the only unfortunate thing is that Jason Quick was there taking down everything he was saying. He has been here when the losses piled up and this is his first taste of winning he has had, sure he could go and be a starter on say OKC or Mem but with our crowd, atmosphere and the chance to be an integral part on a championship team would be enough for anyone who had to go through the J*ilblazers past of losing, He will be fine as a backup sf/pf and we need to remember that titles here do not mean a whole lot and just because Batum or Blake are starting means that they are the best overall, but rather the best fit.
If we can get Nash, Calderon or even Kidd for a combo of Outlaw and someone else then go for it but it should be nothing short of one of those players to take that big of a hit in talent. HE IS NOT A ZACH CASE and in fact he is the exact opposite, humble, quiet and one of the most popular players on the team. We need to recognize that and embrace that. If you read this all you are a trooper cause I was feeling inspired, blah, blah blah, yakkidy-schmakkidy.
Look I view Batum as the starting sf for this team now and in the future and travis will be the backup sf/pf and switch back and forth, unfortunately this will mean an end to the Frye era which will be sad as he is a great guy. Webster seems to be the odd man out and i am interested in what other people see in him. On the offensive side he is not better than Outlaw and on the defensive side he is not better than Batum. Where does he fit on this team? I dont think he does.

I see what you're saying.
The problem is that we haven’t seen Webster this year – I think there is reason to believe that given enough minutes, Martell will be much more effective than Travis by the All-Star break.

That is true
however there were only 3 players that did not improve their per 36 min stats markedly that were under 25 and with the Blazers the year previous were, Jack, Sergio and Webster. Roy, LMA, and Travis all had marked improvements in their per 36 min stats and that is just a fact.
Sergio was considered by many a goner before the season started due to Bayless, yet the arrival of Rudy has brought his game and confidence back from the dead. If Rudy was not here Sergo would be out of here and not many would disagree.
Jack got shipped out for an upgrade in Bayless, but there was no reason to move Webster as who knew we would be able to get Batum or that he would be so successful so fast.
I am just afraid that Webster will be the straw that breaks the camel back and we will lose some games working him back in. I hope Nate brings him back slowly and it is not a problem. Another thing is that Martell was a starter last year and who is the starter this year? People will be up in arms if Batum sees a marked drop in minutes and Nate will still trust TO as he did last year in the 4th. Lastly, een through Frye is soft and not as good at d he still is 6’11 250 and there are people that Travis cannot guard so you will have to go TO/Frye at SF2/PF2.
Just some thoughts.

the whole addition by subtraction thing doesn't make sense
if they are a cohesive group of fun guys who love to hang out with each other and work with each other to make each other better, and sacrifice their own personal interest in favor of the team.

This is like the Jack situation
in that it would be addition by subtraction on the court, instead of off it. By all accounts, Jack was a team leader for the ‘Zers. Well, that didn’t keep him from being traded, and I think the same would be true with Travis. The team would be sad to see him go, but ultimately, they would become a better team.

I am someone who hasn't paid real close attention the past couple years..
I saw some games last year, but wasn’t as fanatical as I am now. Is Martell ALOT better than Travis? Or do they just sorta negate eachother?
