What would you give up for Rudy Gay?
Hey all,
I'm a Warriors fan who is infatutated with the Blazers and reads this board consistently. It seems to me like consolodation needs to be in Portland's plans, as the Blazers already have a ton of talent but need another top-notch player to get them over the Lakers/Celtics short-term and long-term hump.
To me, Rudy Gay is that player.
He makes sense for Portland because he can score well, is improving as a defender, and is a pure 3, which helps when the 2 and 4 spots are pretty well sealed by Roy/Rudy and LaMarcus. The other huge benefit is that Rudy is still under contract for 2009, so if Mr. Allen wants to open his purse strings, it would be 100% possible to spend this year in free agency and then just retain all of the talent already on the team from there on out.
Basically, my question is what you guys (as fans of the team, I'm sure your take on the Blazers is different than mine) would be willing to give up to get him.
Here's my idea:
Channing Frye
Travis Outlaw
Martell Webster
Sergio Rodriguez
Rights to Petteri Koponen
for
Rudy Gay
Marko Jaric (or Antoine Walker or Darko)
Javaris Crittenton
Greg Buckner (has a $1 million buyout provision in his contract for next season)
The Blazers team
PG: Blake / Bayless / Crittenton (if they excercise the team options)
SG: Roy / Rudy / Jaric
SF: Rudy Gay / Batum
PF: LaMarcus / Ike / Randolph
C: Oden / Vanilla Gorilla
with enough cap space to land a guy like Okur (or another big man of his caliber) this offseason despite the new guys or just waiting until 2010, though the cap holds would become an issue because of the three amigos in the same draft class in Roy, Gay, and Aldridge.
Also, it would be totally possible to increase the trade to fit in Conley, probably by adding in Raef's heavily insured deal and this year's 1st and them tossing in Fatoine Walker.
Thoughts/criticisms/flames much appreciated, and I wish you the best of luck going forward.

Interesting.
I’m going to say no, just because Rudy Gay and Rudy Fernandez have the same name. It would confuse both players when people start chanting Rudy at games.
Also, Rudy might be the worst (least interested) starting SF defender I have seen all year. He would fit better in the second unit and I’m not sure you want to give up a lot of assets for a second unit guy.
I like his game on the offensive end, but his defense is painful to watch.

not gonna happen friend
why in the name of god shammgod would the grizz give up their best player, their best expiring contract, a good young talen in crittenton, and a guy with a one million dollar buyout provision for our loveable but unimportant backup PF, two dudes who play virtually the same position (though both are nice pieces) and two nice young point guards when the grizz already have 2 nice young point guards *conley and lowry, of course)?

I'd have to look, but I'm pretty sure
Jaric has a couple years and something like $15 million left owed to him. We’d be doing them a favor by taking him off their hands, so they get to dump salary in the process.
As to having PetKo and Sergio, maybe they’d want Freeland instead since they really only have Gasol and Arthur as serviceable bigs (Darko doesn’t count). I think we come out a little ahead in this in terms of total value exchanged. I’m not a huge Rudy Gay fan, so I’m not sure I’d pull the trigger from our end.

The Grizz have a few problems
And one of them is that they have a terribly cheap owner.
I would be shocked if OJ Mayo stays in Memphis longer than his rookie deal (regardless of what happens with Rudy) and the flexibility that moving their long-term contracts gives them is worthwhile, especially if the Blazers throw in their 1st (which was a part of the deal as I originally wrote it up and then missed it in the posted version)

Rudy Gay is extremely talented
Yeah, he’s a pretty piss-poor defender right now, but he has the athleticism to become a good one if motivated… I just dunno if he’d ever be motivated to become one. Right now, I’d say no, because the Grizz don’t inspire one to become lockdown if they don’t need to be to play (and get accolades).
He’s extremely talented though, and would be a great scorer. Maybe TOO good, since he’s gonna want shots and the ball, and if he doesn’t get that I don’t really see him stepping up his defensive play… which is really what we need at the SF spot right now.
I also don’t believe that the Grizz would take the offer, as he is their best young player out of a nice collection of good young players. I don’t think we have anyone the Grizz would find to be a good, fair trade that we would be willing to give up (so, of course, we wouldn’t be trading Roy/LMA/Oden/Rudy/Joel, and the Grizz wouldn’t want anyone besides them for Gay).
Things would really have to deteriorate between the Grizz and Gay, and Gay would have to FORCE his way off the team, for the Grizz to take a package of bench players for him. Even if Gay doesn’t seem to like his coach much, we’re probably a long way from that point (if it ever happens).
I’m really glad you’re enjoying the Blazers and taking part in Blazers Edge… we got more room, bring your friends! We like to hear from ‘outsiders’ what they think the value and talent level of our players are.

I think my biggest problem
Is I really don’t envision a “star” type player at our SF spot… not with the team we seem like we got cookin’.
Rudy Gay is a star, or future star type player.
In a perfect world, it could work because everyone just comes together to win, but I most young kids who are talented enough to become a star and lead their own team want to do just that. The role playing, defending, all-round type is more important to me than a flashy (but star potential) type player.
Right now, anyways.
A Batum with 4 years experience is what I want, I guess. A Teyshaun Prince type.
I doubt Gay would be happy with that role, and then we’re an unhappy team and everyone has frowny faces. :-(

And I should add
The deal as is is a no brainer, and I wouldn’t give up who we don’t wanna give up for Rudy Gay, but I’d give up anyone else for him.
Worries about star player vs role player be damned. I mean, Gay is gonna be/already is really good, and we can worry about the rest later.

+1
Agreed on all points. Deal as proposed is a no brainer. Blazers do it in a heartbeat on pure value.
Not sure Gay would mesh, but you could always turn back around and swap him for someone who does (in the way Houston did a few years back – for Battier).
But Blazers are not giving up anyone from the Roy/LMA/Oden/Joel/Rudy core, and no way Memphis picks up the phone without someone on that list in the conversation. (MAYBE if the Blazers toss in Bayless they at least pick it up. If I were Memphis, I would at least have to consider Bayless/Trout/Webster/Frye for Gay. Too much talent to ignore, even if Gay is on the cusp.)
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

What's weird is, you could almost make that exact same trade
for Prince, which the Pistons might actually be interested in.
Say, all of the same guys from our end for Prince and say Will Bynum (would have to wait until December 15th because of Bynum). With Sheed getting up there, Channing is like a real poor man’s Sheed who could give them some more depth up front, and Travis and Webster would give them some more athletic swingmen to play along with Stuckey since it looks like they’ll be transitioning into a little more uptempo team with Maxiell and Amir Johnson gradually picking up some more minutes.
Sergio would give them the true PG they no longer have with AI and Stuckey both more combo guards, and PetKo could be a nice prospect alongside him.
Not sure if Detroit makes that trade, but it seems to be within the realm of possibility, plus considering the fact that only Webs has a salary commitment past 2010 when they’d be gearing up for a run at Bosh/LBJ/whoever.
by Royster on Dec 3, 2008 2:32 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
4 years?
I agree with your comment and how the team is constructed… but I think Batum could be that guy in just two years, three at most. He’s been pretty impressive considering his showing, expectations, and the pressure he’s been put under. His only hold up will be that he’ll be buried behind webster and outlaw, and how that dynamic unfolds.
Greg Oden, where posters happen.
by ratbastird on Dec 3, 2008 3:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, sure, maybe
I think saying Batum could be like Prince in 4 years is INCREDIBLY high praise, so I didn’t think it was too conservative to say in 4 years (and a few playoff runs) he’d be that good of a player.
He could be that way sooner of course, since the sometimes timid player he was in France doesn’t seem to exist for the current Batum, and he’s way ahead of where he seemed to be before training camp started, but a lot of stuff we’ll ultimately ask and want and need from our lockdown SF will be stuff he gains through the trials and fires of the playoffs.
So, a few (or several) years to become that battle tested and veteran guile-ling SF we’ll love.
I got really high hopes for the kid. I always liked him, just worried he’d be soft or wilty, since he would do that in France sometimes.

You sure you're a W's fan?
Because that is a 100%, no-brainer, slam-dunk yes for the Blazers. I’m pretty sure Grizzlies fans would burn the city down if it happened though.
We give up none of our top four players for a hyper-athletic, budding scoring star small forward, plus stay two deep at every position save power forward and perhaps point guard (both of which can easily be replaced through the draft or free agency if you’re talking back-ups).
If KP got them to take that deal we should just give up and build an 800-foot tall gold-plated statue of him in downtown Portland right now.

It'd definitely be a tough pill for Grizz fans to swallow
having to see their best player get shipped away for two years running for none of the other teams top 3-4 players.
Although to keep up that streak they’d have to trade Mayo next year, and the franchise would just be forced to fold if that happened.

blazers need defense
at the wing spot – I would imagine if they can find someone that plays like a young shawn marion or if nic can become a defender like tayshaun that would be ideal
already got enough offensive fire power at the 2 and 4 – if those are your guys stop getting guys that take shots away from them… which is what rudy gay would do
also eventually you would imagine oden needs about 12-14 fg attempts as well

You are pulling my legs.......
Gay is not a basketball team player. He is a cancer to develop Grizzlies into another level. He has failed last year and still failing this year.
Seriously I would understand Grizzlies to get rid of this player next future so the trade you say it would be gold for Grizzlies and nothing for Blazers.

I don't think
we give up Webster without first seeing just what he can do this year. And we don’t trade Sergio – I think he’s just started to scratch the surface – too much upside still (I hope). And I don’t think Gay plays good enough D – at least in the little I’ve seen of him, I wasn’t impressed with it.

He certainly hasn't played as well with OJ Mayo
Makes one wonder if he’d play very well with another dominant ballhandler in Roy, and the loss of shots he would certainly get as a Blazer.
And if he ain’t scoring, his defense is hurting you.
Obviously you do the deal if it doesn’t involve the main core (and obviously Memphis wouldn’t go for it without it involving some or a few from the main core), but he doesn’t give us what we need enough to break the bank for.
In short, I totally agree. He hasn’t been as good this year as he should be, and I bet dollars to donuts its because the ball isn’t given to him as much since Mayo is a better scorer.

RE: Rudy Gay trade
If there were a trade to be made for a player, in my mind its rudy gay. Hear me out here…….Reason #1: its thins out uor ranks, which will need to be done sooner or later. reason #2: He may not be the best outside shooter he can still get it done from out there and his other skills fit us perfectly for a 3 man. And Reason #3: we would most generally allways have someone on the floor to yell “RUDY,RUDY,RUDY” for. God i love our Rudy!!! But ya, Memphis would have to be on crack to pull the trigger on that one. As for Foye, Minni does use him and need him, i like Foyes game. He’ll come along, just not nearly as quick or as awsome and our guy, B-Roy for president 2012!!! lol

Why do you want Rudy gay?
I know he has a close relationship with Sergio but I think it has more to do with them both being Spanish and having a history together. I would care if Rudy was gay and really don’t think it’s an issue. If he was gay, I’m pretty sure this team would accept him.
So, I guess I wouldn’t give anything up for Rudy to turn gay. I don’t think you can really turn gay anyhow, because I never decided to be straight. I might turn gay for Mortimer, but I think that would just make me Tom Bi.
