Junk Drawer - Do you root against the Blazers poll

I get the feeling sometimes that some folks here want some members of the team to fail.  I'm sure there are some folks that want Sergio to stink it up in hopes that Bayless gets to play and vise-versa.  I think some folks want Frye to stink so that he'll get traded and others want Nate to fail so he'll be fired and give more playing time to a fan's favorite player. There are a lot of other reasons or players, but I think you get the point.

Here is my simple poll.

These polls aren't quite anonymous

So I don’t know if it’ll be an accurate reflection of members’ opinions.

I’d rather root for everyone to do extremely well and deal with the cognitive dissonance later.

Interesting thing just happened ... I think.

Often I check what’s going on at BE but don’t bother to log in — I’ll generally do that only after reading something that provokes me into commenting. But, just now, when I read the poll options, I went ahead and voted (No, of course) before logging in. I’m pretty sure that my vote registered, although there is no record of it in my profile. Nevertheless, I no longer have the option to vote on this poll. So, maybe there IS a way to voice your opinion anonymously. Further research is definitely warranted.

I had to vote a resounding hell-to-the-No here. I’m Portland born and bred and simply can’t turn against the Blazers, just can’t.

However… I do cringe when some players touch the ball and root for them to pass the ball or play better, smarter D (cough, Frye, cough-cough) but other than that I can’t turn on anyone wearing the slickest uniform in the NBA, no sir.

I couldn’t even boo or root against the Blazers when they were busy with off court drama. I was like Tina Turner, gettin’ all smacked up by Ike, always defensive and full of excuses. “He loves me, really, he does. He just has a funny way of showing it, that’s all.” Ahhh… memories.

This team is too likeable

The only reason I get upset with any player is because they’re NOT playing up to their potential. If they do, I love them. I totally root for them to play well even though it’s not realistic that they all will all the time.

It’s up to Nate and KP to deal with the repercussions if we have too much talent, but that’s a good problem to have.

I guess on second thought I’d root for a player to not do so well if I know he’s headed for the door. I mean, I’d wish the guy the best but I don’t want any of our leftover talent blowing up for the competition Devin Harris style.

No

There are players who scare me when they have the ball (outlaw, fry, and up untill recently blake and sergio) However, two big things are going on whern they do have the ball.
1. Their play affects the BLAZER game and so I always want the team to win or do well. I.E. Every time Outlaw turns off his brain and fires up the most ridiculous off balance shot, I still want the ball to go through the hoop even though I’m shouting, “TRAAAVIS NOOOOOOOOO!”
2. We all have a fairly good Idea of who is staying and who is going. The better a player does – the higher their trade value. Simple

Even players I actually disliked I rooted for

I remember hoping that Zach’s play would play well all of the time throughout his last year specifically for the purpose of the hope that some fool of a GM (Isaiah Thomas.. the rest of the league will miss you) who would take his bloated contract. Plus, he did help us win a few of those 32ish games…

I don’t dislike anyone on this team… Frye and Ike both seem like good guys and are not entirely without their occasional good play in their limited PT. Sergio and Travis both lack some consistency i would expect from a player past their second year, but have the tools to be valueable players. Martell as well… if he was playing. I want LMA to be tougher and use his length and speed on consistently on both ends of the court. I want our rookies to develop and get all of the PT they need to accomplish that as well.. I think that if all of these guys were as great as they seemingly could be.. besides the fact that they wouldn’t all fit in terms of PT or contract value eventually we would really have every thing we would ever need to have for a dynasty over the next decade plus..

We are Blazers Edge. We do not ever root against any of our beloved Blazers.

The question we should really ponder is not why al-Zeidi could be so impolite as to throw his shoes at Bush, but why the dozens of other shoes in the room remained on people's feet, why no foot odor ever purifies the air at a White House press conference, why a man who throws his shoes at our president is more popular than our president himself.

Don't be so sure

One thing I’ve noticed in game threads: People who are unhappy with a player’s performance will still cheer them when they’re playing well. (And say things like “If he played this well consistently, I wouldn’t want him traded!”)

I never hear a comment like “I hate that Travis played great… if he stunk, KP would trade him sooner”.

I think the whole “Negativity on BE” thing is a bit overblown. It’s involving a small percentage of the overall population. Most people would be thrilled with the current players and coaches holding the O’Brien trophy.

just so they wouldn’t get tired? I understand being worried about someone getting hurt, but think about it from their point of view. It’s once in a lifetime experience. I like it when our guys get the chance to do something special.

The Dunk competition, the All-Star Game, the Olympics, they would all be better with a Blazer in them.

Not even when they are no longer Blazers

When Jermaine was greeted with cheers Saturday night my grandson said, “remind me – why do we like him?” and I said “because he was once a Blazer.” “oh yeah”.

That said, I do root against former Blazers when they are playing against us. Some I want to do well (Freddie Jones) and others I really don’t care one way or another (Zach). As far as Darius Miles, I’d rather he’d do well in China or Russia rather than in the NBA – but that isn’t a personal thing, it’s defending the Blazers.

I go frustrated by Jack’s play at times (same as I do with the current players – usually Sergio, Frye, and Trout in that order), but I always wanted him (and the team) to do well, and even when he had a terrible game, it didn’t change the fact I thought he was a great guy. I have crappy days at the office too, the difference is tens of thousands of people will never care. Well, that and the check every two Firdays :)

I’m pretty sure of two things:

1. Someone spent way too much time with feces
2. There are pictures in that book to help you analyze your poo and that makes it the most disgusting thing ever.

Not only is it an actual book

But (1) I have heard of it, (2) one of my buddies received it as a joke Christmas present last year, and (3) he was utterly fascinated by it and it was one of his favorite presents.

I haven’t actually seen the infamous book (it’s now carted around in a gold-covered vessel like the ten commandments), but I understand that it’s basically what you predicted it would be. The restroom basically becomes your own personal Ms. Cleo.

Based on different “qualities” (I won’t further elaborate), you can learn things like “I have an iron deficiency,” or “I need to drink more water,” or “my significant other is having an affair with the gardener.”

It’s enlightening.

Root Against?

No way, man. Absolutely no way. It doesn’t even make sense. Generally, it seems like you would want to, for example, see Bayless on the court over Sergio because you think Bayless could do better things. But if Sergio plays great, then no problem, you don’t need to go looking for an upgrade. There’s no reason to ever root against one of the five people on the court unless you value personality over quality play and wins, which I can’t get behind at all.

Then again, I just realized that that’s true with this current team, but maybe not ones in the past. I can’t remember, but it’s possible I would want to see Ruben Patterson perform badly because I didn’t particularly like seeing a sex offender on the court, or having to battle with an urge to root him on when he’s doing well because it’s good for the team while not really wanting to see any reward for a sex offender.

Shoot, I had to go and complicate it.

So my answer in the poll is no and that’s quite true with this team, but I could see some circumstances in which I would root against a player on the team in the hopes of getting another guy who I didn’t consider a scumbag on the court.

by jcaris on Dec 29, 2008 4:31 PM PST reply actions

Although I don't root against anyone on the Portland Trail Blazers, I objectively expect some players to ...

fail in the long run. Across the NBA, however, there’s a few players I dislike for a variety of different reasons.

Does anyone else eat peanuts like me? I sift thru the nuts and eat all the half pieces first and try to save the whole ones until all the halves are gone. The other thing is that little nugget of goodness one half of the peanut hangs onto seems to be the tastiest of morsels. It took a bit of research, but that little bit is called the radicle. But I type weird, with only two fingers, AND if a misspell a word I don’t let myself quickly just fix the mistake, I have to go and erase the whole word and re-write it correctly. Same if I do an entire sentence incorrectly somehow. Gotta make the mistake go away completely and then do it over.

Also, when I write by hand, I sometimes write out of order— meaning, if I am spelling “Blazer” sometimes my hand will write the “Z” first and i fit the rest around it. I can’t even stop myself from doing it, my hand jumps ahead too fast. That’s why I like typing better, because I can type fast enough to keep up with the thoughts.

Ditto for Aldridge. How the heck a guy like Gasol gets so much heat for being "soft" and Aldridge, probably the softest big man in the entire league, gets a pass? He’s like a WNBA version of KG, with all due respect for women basketball.

Sergio V Bayless

I voted yes, as Sometimes I want Sergio or Blake to play badly , get pulled and have Bayless have a shot. It’s nothing personal on those two, more of liking Bayless and thinking more time for him would be good for the team long term.

That's an awesome poll idea, Tom

Mind if I rip it off (with attribution, of course) for a parallel question on CelticsBlog? I’d be curious to see how our readers feel in this regard about the C’s.

totally awsome

Any poll that confirms the obvious must be a good poll anymore, for reassurance sake alone, ’spose.

Tom is practising collective catharsis again.

One day he could heal us. I´ll report him to the Medical Association on this one. Enough is enough.

Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16

What will be the future of our Blazers. Just a few seasons ago, the Blazers were going to be the OKC of the NBA but injuries to Roy and Oden crippled our dreams of a young championship contender for years and years.

Colonel Rondo and his second round armada?

If Boston is determine to rebuild and cut salary isn’t two mid lotto pics and the right salary filler decent. Maybe not enough but better than what most teams get in that situation. I would prefer that over the Chris Paul package.

I hope and figure that the Trail Blazers could have the best of both worlds. I’ve never seen a more bountiful 2nd round. Its conceivable that the team could deal both lotto picks and still find some nice players in the draft. Players like Orlando Johnson, Lucas Nogueira, Kevin Jones, Will Barton are 1st rounders in most drafts even if its just based on hype and potential. Then you have some possible gems in such a deep draft like Machado, a couple guys that I personally like from Georgetown-their center Henry Sims and forward Hollis Tompson. Both high upside players that I would love to watch in the summer league. If PA were to ever buy into or trade into late first or second round now is the time. Give me Freeland, Diebler and four second rounders in the summer league with Rondo coaching.
