4 Starters - 5 & 1/3 years NBA Experience
What we tend to lose sight of is the fact that "inconsistency" is the mark of young teams. The fact is that the starting line-up consists of Roy (24), Oden(20), Aldridge(23), Batum(20) and Blake28). Two are rookies, two are in their third year, and only Blake can be considered a veteran.
4 of those players have exactly 5 and 1/3 years of combined NBA playing time. And, if you substituted Martel (22) for Batum, those 4 players would then have exactly 7 years of NBA experience. Yet, the Blazers are 19-12.
The second team, in turn, consists of Pryzbilla, Outlaw, Fernandez, Rodriquez and Frye. Bayless, Diogu and Randolph are non-factors.
Personally, I'm a little amazed that we actually have the record we have - given this simple fact. After all, what we tend to forget as fans, is the fact that most NBA players don't individually hit their stride until they have 4 years or so in the league.
Every bit of frustration fans exhibit comes back to this statistic. Hot and cold hands, inconsistency, up and down games, defensive lapses, and the rest. Fans, in turn, get frustrated. Coaches also get frustrated. And then, like yesterday after the loss, they start bickering about it.
No other team in this league is playing 4 starters with only 5 & 1/3 years experience with a winning record. Indeed, it's not even close.
Look around the league at all the rookies - and if you did, and thought about it, you'd be much more satisfied with the Blazers as they are - and perhaps be a little more forgiving.
Consider those drafted this year who got so much hype. How are they doing?
Try, inconsistent. Rose has a good night - and a bad night on a 13-17 team. Love has had 7 points in his last two games on a 5-24 team, Augustin 6 points in his last two games and more turnovers than assists on an 11-20 team. Westbrook had 10 points, 5 TO's and 5 Assists last night - on a 3-28 team, and is averaging 13 pts, 4.2 assists and 3.1 turnovers in 29 minutes. Beasley, the second coming of Lebron is now coming off the bench - not starting - on a 16-12 team. Gordon is playing 28 minutes and scoring 9.4 points with 1.8 assists on an 8 - 20 team. Mayo is averaging 37 minutes and 20 points - but that's on a 10-20 team.
Last night was a classic example of the inconsistency of young teams. We love Rudy. But did you love 3 points in 19 minutes? We like Sergio. But did you like 4 points 1 assist and 1 turnover in 14 minutes? We like Batum - but did you like 3 points and 2 rebounds in 16 & 1/3 minutes? And Blake, the starting PG and the only real "vet" in the starting lineup, gave us 5 pts in 34 minutes last night. 15 points - 4 players.
And then, of course, we want Oden to be the second coming of JC, but one night he gets 5 rebounds and foul trouble, the next night he's got 10 rebounds, 16 points, and only 1 TO and 3 fouls.
And then tell me just what the coach is doing that causes these wide swings in the production of these players? Fans complain about substitutions. That's great. One night you put a second team guy in for 20 minutes and he gets you 3 points, the next night he gets you 12 points. And there is no third option.
Wake up and smell the roses. Get off Oden's back a little. The kids 20 years old for goodness sakes. Deal with the fact that we're starting another 20 year old rookie at SF - because there's no one else - and we simply aren't getting the production we need at that spot. And when you decide that the Sergio - Fernandez connection merits starting in a run and gun environment, ask yourself what you do when Rudy's shot isn't falling - like last night? And other nights. Or how you keep Oden in that game when the big guy is still not fully in shape - and a running game will cut those minutes - not increase them. Or, if you decide Pryz is the way to go - how you will compensate for his lack of scoring?
And then ask yourself - how are we doing so well, not why are we doing so poorly?
And then Give Mac a break - and show a little appreciation.
And try a little patience.

i dont no how many other teams are playing with this much "projected" talent,
and im not gonna look, but our entier team is praktaly first round.
Blake – 2nd round, 39th pick, – 2003
Rodriguez – 1rst round, 27th pick, – 2007
Bayless – 1rst round, 11th pick, – 2008
Roy – 1rst round, *6*th pick, – 2006
Fernandez – 1rst round, 24th pick, – 2007
Batum – 1rst round, 25th pick, – 2008
Outlaw – 1rst round, 23rd pick, – 2003
* Webster* – 1rst round, *6*th pick, – 2005
Aldridge – 1rst round, *2*nd pick, – 2006
Fry – 1rst round, *8*th pick, – 2005
Diogu – 1rst round, *9*th pick, – 2005
Randolph – Undrafted – 2005
Oden – 1rst round, *1*rst pick, – 2007
Przybilla – 1rst round, 9th pick, – 2000
LaFrentz 1rst round, 3rd pick, – 1998
were young, so yeah, its fair to expect losses, but with this much talent, i think its also fair to expect wins. comparing our w/l record and rookie minutes record to losing teams works to a point, but to really be acurate, you would need to find another team thats found themselves in the UNIQUE situation that were in right now.

Now that's getting a bit closer.
And I’’m sure you noticed that when I pointed out the performance to date of those picked in the draft – I only took the top 9. Those were the one’s, after all, that everyone was so high on. Yet, here we are, relying for a starting SF on a 20 year old 25th pick, and as a key off the bench player on Rudy, a 24th pick. If I’d researched the next 16 down to the 25th pick in this year’s draft, the inconsistencies would’ve been even greater. I can only imagine some of the comments if we were trying to play some of those players. And then, of course, the only high draft pick playing on a team with a winning record is the #2 Beasley at Miami (16-12), and he’s now coming off the bench.

Youngest Team in the League
If you don’t include Raef. It really is crazy what the team is doing.
No complaints from me. There are going to be ups and downs. I’m going to wish they learned some things more quickly, but overall, the team should get a lot of room to learn about themselves and the get better.
I fully expect them to make the playoffs this year, but even if they didn’t, I wouldn’t be down on this team. They still have a couple of years to mature before their window opens fully. Then hopefully we’re looking at many years for that window.

Odens Rookie PER before Toronto game
Odens Rookie PER after Toronto game – jumps from 9th to 4th
Odens Foul Rate – he moved down to 13th from 11th after Toronto game
Oden needs to work out the foul situation
Is Oden fouling at too high a rate – He is.
Is his overall progress about where we might expect – I would say yes.

I've heard 36 minutes is a good time adjusted stat, VRS the 40 that some use.
Only the PF(personal fouls) were adjusted to 36 minutes. Right now Oden wouldn’t last 36 minutes – but he’s close.

Thanks for your post. And SpyderRyder – your’s is a classic. Both put the perspective where it needs to be. Oden, in particular. Has everyone forgotten he was coming off an injury that took a year – during which time he was allowed to play any organized ball, then had a second, and then had to “play” his way into game shape?
We have a wonderful young team that can drive everyone a little crazy because at times they make some brilliant jaw dropping play, and at some other times – it’s so bone-headed it leaves you shaking your head. ]
How many of you have raised kids? And here Mac is – with two 20 year olds playing, and another 20 year old (Bayless) chomping at the bit to play,.
Imagine how Mac feels inside sometimes. Does anyone believe that there is any other person, other than maybe KP and Allen, that want’s to win as badly as Mac does? And he knows how to play this game – probably tells some of these players the same thing over and over again. And then, has to say it one more time. And they’re all too big to spank.
And for what it’s worth, Oden, who lost a year without playing at all, had to play through another injury and then play himself into shape – is still at #4. Any takers on where he’ll be once he’s put another 50 games under his belt?
by Eben Calder on Dec 29, 2008 10:48 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
No problem.
I didn’t want to take up room on the post board since I didn’t really have much commentary to go with it. Here in this thread looked like a good place.
Yeah you’re right, if the mental errors drive us crazy; imagine what those 3 (Mac, KP, Allen) must go thru. We may not be looking at the best a team this young has ever done – but it has to be close.
Oden seems to have nice finesse in parts of his game. I’m of the opinion that it will eventually translate into all parts of his game (including the foul situation). How many big men as young as he is have a soft hook like that with either hand, and experience wise he’s barely a Sophomore in college, and yet playing in the NBA.

Oden will be ROY
He’ll be averaging 15-12 by the end of the year. He might even bring his season average up near to that, but he’ll average that over the last third of the season, anyway. And he’ll do it in reasonably limited minutes, because Joel is playing so well we’ll have to give him lots of PT. And they’ll both have a better chance to stay healthy by splitting the time.
Yes, Nate wants to win more than anyone. Paul Allen has other things going on in his life. KP does, too. This is Nate’s life. He goes on the road with these guys. When people say that Nate doesn’t want to win, that’s just stupid. He might make mistakes, but if he has any confidence that a particular course of action will result in more wins, he’ll do it.
Nate probably wins COY this year, and we have had people wanting to fire him. Pretty amazing, when you think about it.
