Doubling

so, if you are coaching Portland, don’t you tell your guys “if you are guarding Dirk or Terry, you should never double off of them” ?

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

One

would hope but it seems like Outlaw constantly leaves say…Kleiza open for three and Outlaw is not alone in this behavior.

I saw us

double off of Dirk multiple times in the first half – and we were doubling Barea to do it. I mean “really!?!”

I also saw us double off of Terry a couple times resulting in wide open jumpers for him

Oden is

being overly cautious in this game. I guess he read Timbo’s post. See, we do matter!

really embarassing! Barea at 5-9 is allowed to get 8 rebounds, Only 13 rebounds from Pryzbilla, Oden and LMA. Seems like our guys didn’t want to play on Christmas day maybe they ate a little too much last night? Also how do we allow Dirk to play so well without getting him fouled out? They just didn’t play with any energy tonight. We can’t be losing at home playing without energy and hustle. Shame on you Nate!

Travis played excellent in the 3rd Quarter

you guys have to give him that. He stole the ball right from Dirk’s hands twice in a row. He played awesome defense in pushing Dirk away from the basket and making him tough shots.

On the other side of the court he was driving into the lane and creating contact. He played a really solid quarter there.

Woof

by Charles Barkley McLovin on Dec 25, 2008 10:23 PM PST reply actions

i dont blame the coach

but there was no communication on defense, and the mavs just had more hustle and looked like they wanted it more.

our execution was terrible in the fourth, we only scored 14 points.

the difference was a veteran team against a young team, as we get more experienced we should be able to close out games like this, however this season there will be games we should have won but we didnt.

by Yawnie on Dec 25, 2008 10:24 PM PST reply actions

no matter what nate does

he cant physically run onto the court himself, the players have to make plays and do the fundamentals, like boxing out, communicating on switches etc. etc.

by Yawnie on Dec 25, 2008 10:28 PM PST up reply actions   3 recs

then why do you need a coach?

The coach is the one who has to analyze the game, put the right guys in and give them the directions to follow.
Did you see a single player looking for Dirk 5th foul on offense? Did you see a guy guarding Barea properly? Offensive plays for Rudy on the 4th Q? Any bench move on the 4th Q to get more rebounds?

what happens if you run an iso for broy

at the top of the key which nate diagrammed in the last 20 second time out?

and then what happens to the play if the mavs double roy as soon as he touches the ball.

teams that win consistently have players who can make plays, X and Os are great theoretically, making plays are partly skill and experience.

blazers arent lacking skills, we are lacking experience, and i expect every veteran team to bring it against the blazers every game.

in essence there is no gimme games at the moment.

by Yawnie on Dec 25, 2008 10:37 PM PST up reply actions

It still has a lot to do with the players.

Roy couldn’t get in the lane much to draw fouls, Outlaw actually was trying and did draw some on Dirk. Przybilla only had 5 boards, and he would’ve been on Bass, forcing him to switch out on Barea, or try to disrupt shots, taking him out of rebounding position, leaving who to grab the boards? Blake didn’t so much as get in Bass’s way so they could’ve thrown up shots and just gone for the rebound.

I do agree with the Rudy part to an extent. I explained why I think it’s harder to run plays for him, but it would still be beneficial to get him moving more.

by Jerb on Dec 25, 2008 10:40 PM PST up reply actions

I blame the guards on this one.

They need to put a body on the other teams’ bigs if they get beat on a drive. Too many times they stood and watched Oden or Przybilla go try to disrupt a shot, while a Dallas big walked up to the hoop. That, and we missed 11 free throws and we lost by 8.

by Jerb on Dec 25, 2008 10:25 PM PST reply actions

Two trends we need to change

1) When we have something working on offense, particularly in the post, we don’t milk it

We most often see this with LMA disappearing after starting the game or the 3rd qtr with a series of post buckets, but I’ve seen it throughout the game with different players. when you go to LMA and he gets fouls on Dirk on consecutive possessions, what do you do next? THE SAME THING!! This team needs to get far more comfortable with repeating the same play until the opposing team stops it. We seem to have a need to spread the ball around. That’s foolish. The ball will get spread when the defense overcompensates to take away what is working.

2) We double off of the opposing team’s best shooter WAY too much

When I played ball, there were certain players the coaches said, “Do not double off of this guy no matter what.” It was a simple instruction. Yet, I see Dirk Nowitski or Kleiza or Matt Barnes getting left open time after time even after they’ve hit a few in a row. I understand that you generally want to always force teams to beat you from farther out, but a contested 10 footer is a tougher NBA shot than a wide open 3 ptr for a good or hot shooter. Travis is horrible at this. I see him cheating off his man all the time and then hopelessly diving to get back to his guy hitting an open three.

I have seen this all season, and it’s totally fixable with proper coaching.

it's basketball 101, and something we have to get better at

do you see the Spurs going 10 possessions without posting up Tim Duncan?

Absolutely Point Number One!

Thats what good coaches and good teams do….when they find an attack that works they make the other team figure out a way to beat it…..example in this game was Dallas running the same play in the last 3 minutes …we never stopped it…they kept running it……..

We NEVER do this….unless you count “giving the ball the Roy and letting him take over” and a coaching strategy…(which I dont)

I have nightmares of how our bad coaching will be exposed if we do make the playoffs (I think we will)….in a 7 game series….Nate will be exposed….just like he was in the playoffs with the Seattle team in 2005

I have always wanted Rick Carlisle as our coach since he was an excellent assistant for us……..instead we seem to get attached to sentimental favorites- Cheeks, Mcmillan …….and because they are nice guys and good community guys we hold onto them and dont hold them accountable for not developing our talent

becuase other teams know

rudy can get hot from 3, so u gotta keep a defender on him, which also spreads the floor somwhat

by Yawnie on Dec 25, 2008 10:29 PM PST up reply actions

Rudy's presence is a threat.

Having him on the court makes it easier for Roy and Aldridge to work.

by Jerb on Dec 25, 2008 10:30 PM PST up reply actions

That's how most offenses are played down the stretch.

It’s hard to play the same team offense that Rudy thrives in because teams pick up the defensive pressure immensely. However, it would be nice to have Rudy running around more screens to tire out the defense in these situations.

anyways

a loss is a loss, doesnt matter if its by 1 or 20, hopefully the guys can relax and enjoy their xmas, hopefully come back for toronto and win

Blazers can't take any team for granted

Raptors were playing horrible and it took a miracle 3 from Blake to win.

a key play i saw was when brandon bass got loose for a dunk

oden switched and didnt call it, i think it was blake who didnt notice there was a switch, and rudy was late rotating, summed up the whole nite defensively.

by Yawnie on Dec 25, 2008 10:33 PM PST reply actions

ouch, but some good stuff until the end

I thought Sergio was playing unusually good defense on Barea in the first half so why no Sergio when barea went off, especially at the end when Nate followed Rick into the pit of small ball. Might as well. I would have like to see a center also. But we need work on defense rotation of course. I have to say, I thought Travis played good defense tonight. Nice to see.

He was getting to the middle of the paint

easily. Just going straight off the pick and charging down the lane. And we go away from the pick and roll?

Travis had a couple good defensive series but overall?

he lost track of jumpshooters consistently, not because he was double teaming but becasue he just drifted away, much like his defense on Kleiza game before last. Horrible!

Then, Why Nate played oDEN in crunch time when he was getting burned?

Why didn’t he give sergio an opportunity in the second half when he had done such a good job in the first half?
Why don’t we do down the strech what works during the game??
Why does he never adapt to the situation??
Why…???

The Blazers need to do something about their soft D.

You always hear that Nate is a defensive minded coach but at times this team can be really frustrating to watch at that end of the floor.
