Andre Miller or Jason Kidd or Steve Blake?
Honestly I am not very excited by our options. By the way Miller and Kidd are the only All-Star PGs available this summer as free agents. Both are
- old
-above average rebounders
-more comfortable passing and setting up their teammates first
-neither player can shot better from distance than Blake
-not as good defensively as they were when they were younger
-better than Blake but require the offense to play to their strengths
So what do we do? Do we stick with Blake? Remember that this is the last Summer that we are going to be able to spend big on a free agent. It seems to me that the only way to get a better PG is to trade for one NOW! Ideally the player I believe is best suited to our needs is Billups. There is no way we could have him now so its best to forget about him and look elsewhere. So what are we looking for in a PG?Someone who
-can accept being a provider first
-can accept being at best a 3rd option, maybe even a 4th (excludes Paul, DW)
-can defend the quick PG like Parker, Ellis etc
-can spread the floor be shotting well from 3pt land
-has the ability to lead our young group of guys
Can anyone name 3 PGs that match our requirements? All I got is Billups, Calderon and Harris. Neither will be available without sacrificing our big 3.
So if Bayless doesn't improve 'alot' for next season we are going to have to stick with Blake.

I'll be honest
In the quest for a championship I would quite happily give up LaMarcus for a good point guard. Jump shooting power forwards don’t cut it.
Kevin Garnett just won a championship

KG can board though.
And get on all fours in a defensive stance.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

Tim Duncan is another one.
Rasheed won a championship too.
Dirk hasn’t won a C yet, but he’s not too shabby.
There is no doubt LaMarcus will put up nice stats, I doubt his ability to do anything outside the mid range and his willingness. Until he actually shows me he is capable of driving the basketball and playing in the post more than once a game I’m not going to believe in the level of value we put on him.

It saddens me that our two regular power forwards shoot more jump shots than our SG.

Jose Calderon
Is not noted for his defense.
In this league, if you want a PG that is quick, can stroke the three, be a good distributor and play tough D… You’re gonna have trouble making him the 4th option. Derrick Fisher, by the way, meets a lot of your needs, although his defensive merits do not extend to quickness. However, I don’t really want any of those guys on this team (especially Fish)
if i had to choose
the most important traits…i’d say that distributing is the most important for OUR team. tough defense is nice, but if he can play adequate d while stroking the 3 i’ll be happy. i’m pretty content with what blake and sergio brings. when bayless develops and brings us something different to the table we should be pretty versatile. tony parker isn’t a good defender, but the spurs do pretty well with strong anchors in the middle.

Steve Nash would be 4 out of 5 on your list.
His glaring inability, of course, is “defend the quick PG like Parker, Ellis etc”.
Still an intriguing notion, and will be until and unless the Suns pick up his 09-10 team option.

i'd love nash if we could sign him up as a FA
i don’t think i’d want to trade for him tho. he’d be an awesome mentor for not just our pgs but for the team.

If KP had wanted Billups
he could have got him. The league is full of excellent point guards and they all have different strengths. Parker can score anytime he wants, Paul can dish out 20 assists, Rondo is a blur. Steve Blake shoots the 3 better than any of those guys. So what do you, trade one strength for another?
He's been the best
shooting guard in the league for years. He’s got the complete game but I don’t see Phoenix letting him go any time soon.
Pass on Miller
Being from the philly area, ive seen them play and have followed them. Miller looks to be on the decline. I’m not so sure that he’s better than blake right now. miller was never really a good shooter, now he’s a step slower on defense. he can still pass and maybe he’s miscast in philly, as he’s now an older player on a team looking to run, but he’s only going to get worse from here. if the blazers signed miller to even a 2 year deal for 6-8 mil/year, by then end of the contract, he’d have worn out his welcome.
My 3
1. Kirk Hinrich
2. Jason Terry
3. Steve Nash
I ranked them based on how I think each would fit with the Blazers and what the cost would be in terms of assets (all 3 of these guys would cost RLEC and change, depends on how much of a gouge the other GM wants to go for). I think Terry would cost more in terms of players than Hinrich since it would be an inter-conference deal with a team the Blazers will likely be battling for a playoff seed, and that (plus the fact Terry is 31 with 4 years left on his deal – of course, that might be perfect to keep the seat warm for Bayless/Sergio whenever one of them is ready to assume the job in 2-3 years) contributed to me opting for Hinrich at the #1 spot. Nash would be a great get, but I only see him moving if Phoenix goes into an all out tank mode for the rest of the season, which I don’t see happening.
Bayless has been testing the fences for weaknesses
You forgot Mike Bibby
He’s a free agent this summer to
"Sometimes I catch myself watching him and he's shooting floaters all-net. And just to watch how he's talking trash. I loved it. I loved every minute of it. Rudy's a competitor." - Brandon Roy
+1
Love Mike Bibby! Bring him in NOW!!!
All right.... That's confiscated. All of it. And I want you on the next transport off this rock or I'm gonna shoot you where it don't grow back!
Doubt that Bibby will be a pass first PG
plus Bibby is the kind of player that does not play his best and hardest every game. We all know who his numbers dropped as soon as he signed his last contract.
Calderon would at least
be someone that had to be guarded, unlike Blake. Plus his playmaking ability is far better than Blake’s.
