This game

is either going to be a really nice victory for us in the mold of the Phoenix game this past week or it’s going to be a blowout in favor of Dallas.

I’m voting for the nice victory.

So what? Today’s Christmas, whether you celebrate it or not, and I hope you have a great day whether you celebrate it or not.

But, dude, if you are a Muslim, I’m afraid based on your comments you might not be a very good one. So have a good Christmas anyway.

Well, if we're going to have a theological snit...

Then I feel obliged to mention that, based on both astronomical research and historical records of Roman taxation, it’s most likely that Jesus of Nazareth was born in the summer.

Late December was the time when Romans acknowledged the winter solstice with the Saturnalia, a celebration of one of their many dieties. Early Christians who were persecuted by the Romans relocated their honoring of the messiah to the same time period in order to obfuscate their true activities.

BaB might have been a little bit chippy up there in how he reminded the readership that there are non-Christians in the B-Edge hay-ouse, but I don’t see how that warrants openly questioning his ability to adhere to the tenets of his faith. If you feel it’s your place to cast stones, then feel free to aim them at smartypants agnostics like myself.

hmmm...whatever...this is the day we have the party,,,

party if you like …do whatever I spose…

cultural Christmas has taken on a lot of weird stuff from other cultures including the opportunitiy to subrogate the Romans festival of lights (dec 25) as the Romans celebrated each year as the days began to lengthen that the darkness would subside again this year..My Grandmother came from Rome … her last name was Festa so I feel they knew how to party….

All that said who has seen the Jesus and Santa lounge act on South Park….? Or Mr. Garrison’s Christmas around the World …..classic….

Keep smiling

Down with political correctness…in fact, *&%# those guys

by LetsBlaze on Dec 25, 2008 12:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Chippy?

BaB and I have had a whole lot of conversations. If he’s a Muslim, I’m English. He was joking and so was I. He’s also told us that he’s homeless except that he isn’t, and other creative comments.

There may well be something to your historical comments, though why they didn’t actually do it on Saturnalia (rather than a few days later) if what you say is true is beyond me, so I’m not exactly persuaded. No one really knows when he was born, and no one really knows how and when early Christians started celebrating it on 25 December. But it was at that time of the year that the shepherds would have been out with their flocks all night, because that is lambing season, so at least one part of the story fits with late December.

He was also probably born in 4-5 B.C. That’s right, Christ was born — Before Christ.

And by the way, Muslims honor Jesus as a prophet, so a lot of them aren’t too bothered about Christmas at all. If BaB really wanted to bash Christmas, he’d have said he was Jewish or Jehovah’s Witness, but he was just playing around.

Happy 25th to you, whatever you believe or don’t believe.

Too cold in December for lambing

I’ve read that it’s likely the Jesus was born in the fall during the feat of Tabernacles (This is based on the account in Luke re: Zechariah, who’ s priestly “rotation” would’ve put him in the temple in May/June, then following the normal gestation periods of Elisabeth and Mary it works out for Jesus to be born in October.) The Roman taxation angle also fits, since all the Jews would’ve been travelling to their home towns for the feast. Celebrating the conception of Jesus at the end of December is more accurate.

Did you know that the celebration of Christmas (or Yule) on December 25th was against the law in the colonial period? It wasn’t until the 19th century that immigrants from Europe brought the Christmas traditions over to America that we’re familiar with, today.

by two4larue on Dec 25, 2008 4:28 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not that cold in Israel in December

It’s virtually at the equator.

That priestly rotation thing is interesting, but nobody knows how precise it is, or how accurate Josephus was. You have to start with what he said about 70 A.D., count backwards, and guess the year right, all of which is a little tricky even if he did give us the right info. But even so, there is nothing that says how soon after he got home Elisabeth got pregnant, so even if that calculation is right, a month or two here or there means nothing.

The feast of Tabernacles thing could explain why there was no room in the inn, but the census itself could also explain that.

Was it against the law everywhere in the colonial period, or only in Massachusetts? Those Puritans could be pretty strict about some things, so Massachusetts wouldn’t surprise me, but somehow I can’t see the Virginians banning it.

I still play Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (with Breakthrough expansion pack) with friends and family on PC. We have LAN parties at thanksgiving and christmas when we’re all together…..and that game is like 6 or 7 years old. It’s just classic.

I had some old school emulators on my old computer that let me play the true classics like Bird vs. Jordan—the 1988 classic one on one game. And Odyssey….lol that game was classic.

But seriously, the Blazers need to win and the Mavs need to lose. We can’t lose at home on Christmas. I don’t care how secular you are, it’s just not what needs to happen.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!

Many blessings to all! There is something about a Christmas Day with Christmas Day Blazer tickets! The weather ruined my Christmas Eve plans, but I am determined, nay desperate to celebrate in the Rose Garden today.

In a moment of panic, I spread rock salt on last night’s layer of ice from this latest round of freezing rain on the driveway in front of my car- in the dark, the quiet, and more importantly, the privacy of the 3 am hour. Let the neighbors cast their shamed-of-me glances, let the greenie police come, even the little fishies rise up in revolt…I must get to the Rose garden tonight.

sorry to inject some basketball into this thread, but...Brandon Bass

anyone else think he would look great coming off the blazers bench? I’ve been focused on adding a slashing small forward who can get to the FT line for a while now (not many out there besides Rudy Gay, Caron Butler, Gerald Wallace), but I also think we need some more rebounding muscle at power forward.

Diogu is fine, but I don’t believe he’s a real answer. Bass would be a great compliment to LMA. He’s constantly around the ball and in the paint. You don’t need to run plays for him, and he gets a decent number of FT attempts while shooting a great percentage (84%). He gives you ~8pts and ~4 reb in 19 minutes/game. A good game for him looks like 12 pts and 10 reb in 25 mins. Imagine him paired with Joel, and how that would free Joel up to block shots without having to worry about weakside rebounds as much.

Channing, at his best, mimics rookie season LMA with nice jump shooting and very little else. His defense and rebounding are hopeless. Diogu is worth a look, but he is so short and stubby that he seems destined to get shots blocked and have trouble finishing when he does get a rebound.

Bass is the kind of plus plus role player that you can get without major upheaval and instantly plug him in. Think Buck Williams for your bench. Thoughts?

At least you gave yourself a year to change your mind. You should just walk out the door now and never come back. You have a year of “when’s the day” and “how did he ask,” then you’ll hear “when you having kids” from then on.

My go to answer is, “You can’t get pregnant the way we do it.” As long as my wife isn’t around, I say that. We both don’t want kids. We sometimes regret having a dog and a cat. Ideally, we want to live close to some in-laws and spoil their kids so they’ll like us better than their own parents.

her sweet and lovable little cub. I guess that’s why I protect him so fiercely. Any smoldering looks I give him are when he’s been naughty and he’s about to get a “time out”. #25 And I’ve always thought Jorga was too much of a lady to goose anyone, but you never know with ladies, they can surprise you with an occasional rowdy moment so you’ve gotta watch out.

They never call the foul there in that kind of situation. Maybe if it was obvious, but it didn’t seem that way.

not from the live angle anyay

but there were a lot of bodies in the way, which is why it would have been nice to see another angle on replay, especially given that they had a ton of time to show several

on a related note

wiz didn’t help themselves down the stretch, but the Cavs got a gift 3 points on a phatom foul on a LBJ 3 pointer, as well as ever other call going there way in the last 3 minutes

I think Dampiere is a good matchup for Oden.

Should be a good "measuring stick"

Aldridge REFUSES to finish strong

He was under the hoop with Jason Kidd on him. That should have been a RAMMMSTER JAM.

and for as "slow" as the media makes him sound

he always squeezes by the defense. Kind of like Yvenson Bernard… slow OSU RB, always found a hole through the lines. It’s a talent.

Ugh... my dog is having nosebleeds.

Anyone else ever experience this? Advice?

honor rasheed wallace

by Cablinasian on Dec 25, 2008 7:54 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

If it’s serious you have to go to the Vet.

Bad nosebleeds must be cauterized; even paramedics can’t do anything except pinch your nose.
