Alexander is one of three NBA rookies who'll compete for a spot in the Slam Dunk contest. The other two rookies are guard Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder and swingman Rudy Fernandez of the Portland Trail Blazers.

wow

I can’t believe this is the first we have heard of this.

That is crazy.

I’m not sure I want Rudy in the dunk contest. Do you think he would just do a series of basline dunks?

by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 24, 2008 9:01 PM PST reply actions

all oops fed by sergio

….either that or he needs to be fouled in an awkward way and just throw up an awesome lay-up, but I don’t know if that counts.

by pklym on Dec 24, 2008 9:28 PM PST up reply actions

yea i know thats what i thaught, hes just not a contest dunker

yea he gets alley oops and all but he’s not like the creative between the legs kind of dunker.
ill vote for him but i hope he doesnt get in because i think he’ll embarace himself and us as blazers.
You should probably also have a vertical higher than 35 to be in the dunk contest ,rudy is a 1 foot jumper. And even if he gets in he’ll prob. get sergio to just throw him lobs.In his video he says he want to be at the all-star weekend and he will cause he’ll be in the rookie game,so thats enough please no dunk contest, sorry rudy but i’d much rather see alexander or westbrook who unlike rudy have hops

Where do you vote?

I said voting would be held at NBA.com, so I went and looked and there was no sign of any “Rookie slam dunk voting”. Weird, maybe later?

we need to jump on that big time!

Rudy is not a dunk contest dunker

He is a great alley oop finisher but I haven’t seen him do a crazy dunk contest style jam.

He could have Sergio throwing him oops

Fred Jones did it a few years back.

I agree, but you really don't see

anyone pulling out dunk contest dunks in games ever these days, especially when you’re fast breaking as little as we do.

Sad to say, I’m almost hoping Rudy doesn’t win so we can see if Joe Alexander is really as good at dunking as the hype.

cool

gives me a reason to watch! I hope rudy does well but, i personally don’t see him winning. He is very athletic, but I just haven’t seen that out of him. Joe Alexander can fly and Westbrook has some sweet dunks on youtube. Well i hope rudy proves me wrong and it will be fun to watch.

This will be sweet.

We’ll have Roy, Oden, and Rudy in Phoenix….that is sweet.

Rudy is not a dunker

Please people. Rudy can finish alley-oops with the best of them. But he is no dunker. Instead, vote for the guy we can leap out of the building …Joe Alexander.

by Balian on Dec 25, 2008 10:31 AM PST reply actions

If Rudy, Westbrook, and Alexander are being voted for the 4th and last spot

Who are the other contestants besides Dwight Howard?

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

Rudy doesn't have the style...

During the fanfest warmups, Bayless and Travis were having a mini dunk off. Rudy decided to join the action and did the most pathetic little two handed dunk. That is great during a game, but with nobody else on the court, not so much. I don’t want to see him embarass himself. Bayless seems like a far better choice. That guy can get up and he has the flare/confidence needed to rock the crowd. Plus he is short, which is always an advantage in the dunk contest. Vote Bayless….

RUDY > MJ

by bowdown on Dec 25, 2008 12:34 PM PST up reply actions

Once again he just doesn't have the experience

let’s come up with awesome ideas…

Rudy runs along the baseline and tosses it up over the hoop and behind the head alley-oops it to himself.

Jaws were hitting the floor as Greg repeatedly attempted to tear the rim off the backboard...

by TheOdenator on Dec 25, 2008 3:44 PM PST reply actions

I'm a huge Blazer fan...

but I can not vote for Rudy over Joe Alexander. It’s not even close. Joe is made for these kinds of contests.

If everyone is critical of other fans for not voting for Roy in the All-Star game, how can I in good conscious vote for the second best choice for the dunk contest.

by parkinglotj on Dec 25, 2008 11:46 PM PST reply actions

I can't believe that Joe

can hit his head on the rim. I had to see it to believe it. Awesome. I wonder if Travis can do that too?

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

by OCBlazerFan1 on Dec 26, 2008 9:14 AM PST reply actions

dunno man

i want to see what rudys got.

myemic23 mentioned what he saw in the warmups, and there is no doubting rudy has the vertical or overall athleticism to make some nice dunks……

problem is no one has ever seen his best stuff, and i cant find a video anywhere! which makes me kinda curious……… since i have a gut feeling this is the one and only time rudy will compete in the dunk comp

Alexander doesn't have a chance

the entire country of Spain is going to vote for Rudy, not to mention Blazer Nation.

by koyote on Dec 27, 2008 10:42 AM PST reply actions

Alexander was born in China

China > Spain, in terms of potential voters

As long as Rudy is going to be in PHX anyway for the rookie game, I say go for it!

Roy/Oden can throw him lobs

he is going to win the dunk contest

then move on to the 3 point contest and win that!

I think he’ll just be embarrassed on national tv.

whatever happens

he cant be as bad as chris andersen, those 2 years he was in the dunk comp were terrible, i was covering my face and shaking my head, especially that time he had like 20 attempts for 1 dunk.

by Yawnie on Dec 27, 2008 3:18 PM PST up reply actions

Bayless would be better

but I voted for Rudy.

how about instead of doubt and lack of faith

we just get ready to root for Rudy to figure out a way to amaze the world…

has there been an international dunk champion (or contestant) before this year?
