Joel Przybilla is my hero
I may, in fact, add him to the "my heros" section on my myspace, a great honor, I assure you.
I hope we keep him around, he earns his money night in and night out. People say that he is an offensive liability, which is true to a certian extent, though less so this year than ever. Joel may not be nailing foul line jumpers, but his contribution as an offensive rebounder is very important for us. Offensive boards often lead to high percentage putbacks or getting to the foul line. Also, if you grab the offensive board, your team has a chance to score and the other team does not. Extra possesions are very valuable.
Przybilla also is an intimidator, a shot-blocker, a hustle player, and takes charges. Players like Przybilla and Blake (if they are coming off the bench) are the kind of players that break other teams backs in the playoffs. They do the "little things" (TM) and most importantly they don't make many mistakes.
10 pts and 19 rebs on a bum ankle. Recs for Joel!

Actually,
since there is no way to actually “rec” Joel, I was giving him my recs. But, I’m glad people share the sentiment!

Joel’s foul shots iced the win – an unexpected contribution to put the game out of reach. Now, if he really wants to make a difference long term he will teach Greg to keep his arms straight up on defense. Now that would be an accomplishment.
Way to go, Pryz!
Joel is the man
Period. Most underrated Center in the NBA.

There are about five things I really like about Joel...
1. He hustles his ass off, and there are lots of players in the NBA who don’t.
2. He’s a real craftsman on the boards. You could seriously put a couple isolation cameras on him and make coaching videos of him.
3. He’s consistent. You know what you’re going to get every night. The same effort, 6-ish points, 14-ish rebounds, a block or two… And the stat that you don’t see in the box — he stays home, plays goalie, and clogs the paint.
4. He doesn’t have an ego. The dude could be the starter for between 15 and 20 NBA teams, but he seems happy where he is doing what he does and he doesn’t whine about lack of minutes or have his agent bluster about trade threats or get pissy with the media. He’s a straight-shooter, he’s humble, he’s team oriented.
5. He’s tough. Low post in the NBA is not just a matter of physical size and technique, it’s about will and determination and the willingness to take shots and give them. It’s slamdancing at a hardcore show, controlled mayhem, not for the faint of heart (who prefer to sit outside the 3 point circle and wave their arms because they’re uncovered). Pryz has really GOT IT.
I’ve always thought his offense was underrated and I continue to say that with just 3 good entry passes a night and 25 to 30 minutes on the floor, Pryz could be a 10 ppg. guy on the offensive end.
I also continue to believe he will finish this season shooting over 70% from the FT line, which is good for a big, and AMAZING for the man — testimony to a lot of work he’s put in on that aspect of his game. (His mom closes her eyes when she’s at games and he goes to the line!)
That’s all I can think of now. I don’t own a Blazer jersey, but if I ever do, it will be his.

well said
I hope Joel teaches Greg everything he knows. The first thing being keep your arms straight up when a guy attacks the rim. Greg needs some shock therapy or something. Everytime he gets whistled I immediately think the refs are just being hard on the kid, but every replay shows a clear foul most of which are bringing those arms down.
"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"
I wonder how many games it takes to learn to keep your arms up?
Apparently more than 23 games.

Yes, that's pretty much it. The other thing is that Oden goes for every block instead of surrendering when he has lost positon...
…………………….. I think a good part of his problem with fouls is that he’s not stopping penetration until it’s too late. I’d like to see a foul chart of where they all happen, I’l bet they’re all within 3 feet of the rim.
Pryz gets dinged for a lot of moving screens and blocking fouls trying to take a charge, but he doesn’t seem to get rung up at the rim with anywhere near the frequency of Oden.
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
I do wonder why he ends up out on the perimeter so often on defense.. He gets at least one foul a game
trying to keep up with a PG.
"Shock therapy"
I had almost the same thought. I think that if the coaching staff isn’t already doing so, they should be running drills for GO that focus exclusively on keeping those arms straight up. To break a bad habit, you have to isolate the unwanted behavior and repeat the correct action until it becomes absolutely second nature. They need to get GO to the point that he can’t bring his arms down if he WANTS to.
Another thing: GO could learn from Joel that he doesn’t always have to go for the block; drawing a charge can be just as effective.
But all these issues will work out soon enough. GO is bright and talented and has good teachers—including Joel, Maurice Lucas, Nate, Monte, etc. He’ll get it, and once he does, he’ll have it forever. In the meanwhile, Joel will keep holding down the fort.
I have to say: during preseason, some BE posters talked about trading Joel Przybilla. But I was one of the people who argued that Joel would continue to be worth his weight in gold for many seasons to come. Even once GO is dominating on a regular basis, I hope Joel gets at least 15 minutes per game. It’s a HUGE advantage to have two centers who can play with abandon—not having to pace themselves or worry too much about foul trouble.
Joel Przybilla was the heart and soul of the Blazers last season, and that hasn’t changed.
"If [Roy & Aldridge] walked around in fur coats, with a bunch of glamour & glitz, we'd have a bunch of guys wearing fur coats. But they don't. They're just good guys who want to win and know how to play the right way." --Kevin Pritchard
Agreed, and
Joel has to stay, he is a killer 2nd center, and when Greg gets his quickness back, think of a end of game zone with Pryz low, Oden at the foul line, LA shadowing the guy with the ball, B-Roy and Rex chasing the shooters. Nothing inside, one contested shot at the 3point line or likely blocks at the rim and dunks at the other end.
If you shoot the messenger often enough, the message stops being delivered.
Joel is Toughness "Personificated"
I loved the way he walked up court into that mouthy Anderson and got him T’d up. Joel for 6th Man, helyea.
Joel and the guys kept it together through a tough one tonight, and right in the middle was Pryb’Zilla.
Joel reminds me of Godzilla, holding forth in the lane like he is destroying Toyko all over again every show!
And I love the thought of J-Bay [T-Rex] and Joel [PrybZilla] giving us a dinosaur combo!

I lick my lips at the thought of this lineup: 1. Rex; 2. Roy; 3. Marty; 4. LMA (brutally forced by a cruel coach to play low); 5. Pryz.
With Rudy and Travis and Blake off the bench.

Player of the game for sure. Joel played solid D, dominated the glass and even hit clutch free throws. Tremendous.

Joel shot 3-6...
Thats 50% , Pathetic…. Anything south of 80% is a failure for Joel. 19 rebounds 19 beeshmounds, I need 80% shooting or put him on the bench!
Sergio also had a pretty nice game. He attacked the rim, he scored efficiently(3-5 shooting) and he had 4 assists to 1 turnover with 3 steals as the cherry on top. Rudy and Sergio really lifted the play during their first stint. They really changed the pace of the game and it worked in the blazers favor. All in all, it was a great night from the bench, with Joel being the shining star. Bravo!!!
RUDY > MJ
Joel's on a cold streak
don’t worry, he’ll heat back up to his normal 80% or even an adequate 75% soon.

I like when Przybilla
and LaMarcus both fouled that guy going to the basket and Greg was on the bench with 5 fouls and I think Joel had 4. The announcers said Joel was shouting to LaMarcus “take it, take it, take it!” and LaMarcus immediately put his hand up.

Channing is nearly always the first hand up after a whistle, if he's within 5 feet of the play
It’s one of the things I do like about him. He knows the order of importance on the team, and will happily take a foul he didn’t commit, just to keep someone else in the game.
Of course, I’ve always assumed the refs ignore the person raising the hand, and that they assume the player actually didn’t commit the foul. I’ve never been sure about its effectiveness.
It worked like a charm in jr. high

I had a chance to sit very close to the court tonight and one of the things i noticed is
Joel yells a lot on defense. He is constantly shouting out screens and where guys should be. He is a pro.
Joel got my vote
for most improved, most inspirational, and best defensive player for the season so far. I gave him consideration for most valuable besides Brandon.
Greg has showed why he could surpass Joel as best defensive player, but last night, he showed why he isn’t close yet.

ALL STAR BALLOT!!!!
I am wondering were all these przybilla fans have been! I remember going to the garden when Joel would come out of the game and nobody was cheering for him? I would stand and cheer. I am the same guy who posted why is Joel not on the all star ballot and all of the Blazers fans were laughing at me saying" I hope this post is a joke" and “only people in Minnesota would vote for him” now they are standing and cheering!I have a Joel jersey and it is the only one I have.

always been a huge Joel supporter
even back to his good year before he took that shot in the cojones and got benched for Mags regularly
My dad and I managed to finagle floor seats to the game in Sacramento (for us to schmooze the owner of a huge account for his work, who lived there) that year when he had 8 blocks, including that one NASTY (completely clean) rejection of a Darius Songaila dunk attempt that left Songaila lying on the court holding his head for a few minutes. I had told the client to watch out for Pryz, and I was wearing all blazers gear and going nuts every time he’d toss a shot back…naturally the place was pretty close to silent at those times and I’m sure he could hear me, this was before many people really knew who he was and he kept giving me these confused looks as I was cheering him on by name the whole game

LOVE IT!
We need more people like you and me! I ran into Kirk Hinrich’s sister in Kansas City and I had on my Przybilla jersey and she approached my girlfriend and I at a bar, and she said " I GOT TO SHAKE YOUR HAND I LOVE JOEL" !
Joel is not on the allstar ballot because before the season...
… he was not expected to be the Blazers starting Center. He clearly has been Portland’s best Center and is deserving of being on the ballot, but its irrelevant because he would never get voted in anyway. Joel’s play does not need to be acknowledged with a spot on the all star ballot.
Boomshakalaka
Plus...if Joel played in the all star game...
The east wouldn’t score, and that wouldn’t be good for ratings.
