New backup PF?

After watching that turrible play of our backup PF's this last month, i kinda get the feeling that channing and Ike are not going to cut it. Trout at the 4 hasn't been working out to great lately either, maybe due to Rudy taking a lot of his touches. I bring this up because Brian Hendrickson's Blazer Banters Blog has a good article about Joel Freeland. Anyone remember him? He's long, big, athletic and improving. Should we bring him over next year and give him a chance?

Not at all.

It was a nice article and you have added a new (*) and valid dimension to discussion about who plays PF behind Aldridge.

 • new in the sense it is the first time I’ve seen someone actually post information showing Freeland’s level of performance, and not just saying Freeland’s the answer.

I'm cool.

Until I know that Martell won’t be back, I see him as starting 3 and Nic as a great back up.

That makes Travis only home 6th man of the year behind LA. I’d like to see him there a bit with our two headed center playing well and Marty contributing before I vote to change our chemistry.

Is it just me or do others agree that a dominant center is best served by a PF with range? I like the weakside help having to defend a three point threat. I know, hard to see that materializing some days, but I think that it will come to pass.

Stay patient brothers and sisters.

As I've been saying for two seasons...

…KP’s job won’t be complete until he adds a “Maxsap” off the bench. Think Millsap, Maxiell—that kind of guy. High energy, physical, nose for the ball—but with offensive skills. Kinda like what KP hoped to get in Ike Diogu—but you get what you pay for.

I think Ike is better for us in the short run (i.e., till the end of this year)...

He’s had some really good games with us so far, and even when he’s off, he’s not as bad as Frye… Thus, i could either see us keeping him, or packaging him with someone else at the end of the year

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 23, 2008 10:39 AM PST up reply actions

Diogu being showcased?

Has anyone else thought of this? Maybe KP has asked Nate to give Ike some PT so another GM can get some recent video on him in hopes of finalizing a deal?

we can hope, anyway

Well put.

Which means that Channing is that item your neighbor paid a premium for at Nordstrom’s and you picked up from him during a garage sale, only you don’t use like you thought you would, because it does the same thing as the slightly higher end model you already have.

I guess it's rust

Industrial strength rust! WD-40 won’t cut thru it.

I’ve said before: every time Ike gets the ball down low I just cringe. Nothing good EVER comes of it.

Poor Nate is stuck between a rock & a hard place. When Frye’s outside shot isn’t falling, Nate gets little to nothing from him. So he comes in with Ike. Ike gets the rebounds and blocks that Frye can’t get. But he promptly turns it over EVERY SINGLE TIME! Finally, in exasperation, Nate goes back to Frye. But poor Channing has been sitting on the bench all game long; how can he ever regain his stoke under those circumstances?

If Nate had gotten something, ANYTHING from the back-up four position last night, the Blazers would have won the game. Like I said, poor Nate. He’s gotta be begging KP for some help…

KICK IT OUT, Diogu!

That’s my battle cry, everytime Ike gets an offensive rebound

And invariably he tries to put it back up, gets capped or misses the bunny…he’s a virtual turnover machine

by two4larue on Dec 23, 2008 2:36 PM PST up reply actions

The Denver game showed...

You gotta have a backup PF behind LMA who’s remotely capable of getting a rebound. Whether it’s Freeland or through a trade, doesn’t matter, but Trout by himself ain’t gonna cut it.

The reason is, in a game like last night with two super quick big guys attacking the bucket, you have to be able to slow them down and get some boards. Joel seemed a little banged up, Oden was in foul trouble, and that led to getting destroyed inside.

Milsap would be great but Utah’s not letting him go.

Freeland’s looking great in the ACB. Very encouraging…

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

Freeland info anyone?

I haven’t seen him play, what are your impressions? I’ve heard some good things (the best was a 6’11 Hansbrough, which would be awesome), but if you’ve seen him, what is his game like?

Hopefully Martell

gets back soon, and Travis can run the 4 with the energy group (Sergio, Rudy, Batum) off the bench. Obviously, that puts a tremendous amount of defensive pressure on Joel, but Frye/Diogu can get spot minutes if the situation dictates. I definitely think the Blazers NEED a banger backup PF via trade/draft/FA, but if a trade doesn’t happen, a healthy Martell would help, due to his impact on the rotation.

Bring Felipe Reyes to Portland

he can be an excellent backup PF even if he is only 6,9 and he is an experienced player and can add some toughness to the team.
Having some friends in the team can help to convince him to leave Real Madrid.

When's the last time

A good player was brought over to an NBA roster from Europe during midseason? Ever?

I would think the Euro contracts would discourage that kind of thing, unless he was the suck and got released…

by two4larue on Dec 23, 2008 2:39 PM PST up reply actions

About to happen for the first time actually

Nenad Krstic signed an offer sheet with the Thunder and he’ll be the first. Wouldn’t be happening if his team was doing well with basketball or finances.

by danielfarrell on Dec 23, 2008 4:40 PM PST up reply actions

How about a backup Pf who averaged !0 & 6 in the preseason?

With 60% FG%, and with a couple blocked shot assists and steals per game?

4th yr guy…will play for the minimum…knows all your sets….

One who is just sitting there….

Hmmmmm…..what was his name….

HOW ABOUT SHAVLIK?

It is almost completely impossible to suck more than what I’ve seen from Ike and Chan (of late)…

And if he does happen to suck more than those two (which I know is untrue) what in the world is he doing there….and what WAS that preseason about??

After i posted this

At this point

he couldn’t do any worse. He had a decent stretch in Philly for a while, the Blazers need some production out of that slot

Shav should play tonight...

I’d love to see him and JB in the backcourt…. the new “American Armada” that commits fewer turnovers and can actually dribble the ball up the court….

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 23, 2008 12:08 PM PST up reply actions

That's not exactly true

Some summer league wonders can actually play. They just need the right opportunity. Bayless is one of those guys, and the Blazers’ brass knows it. But he’s a green rookie and will have to pay his dues.

Ahem

Last night against Denver, Joel tweaks his ankle, Greg gets beat off the dribble by Nene and reaches/pushes his way into 6 quick fouls. A LEGIT backup PF-C is not a Christmas wish, it’s a NECESSITY!

Now, I realize Chris Wilcox may not be a sexy choice, but he’s an UFA at season’s end, so his contract would not cost against the Blazer’s cap like Frye and Diogu’s will. Wilcox is a 6 year vet who knows the league and won’t hurt you around the basket at either end of the floor. Hey, if KP is really savvy, maybe he can even get Steven of Nazareth thrown into the deal?

BTW, Freeland is not" the answer" at this time. Shavlik would school him and Randolph can’t even get off the bench playing behind Channing and Ike!

by two4larue on Dec 23, 2008 1:56 PM PST reply actions

Dont know if that trade would ever go down

but if he can stay healthy he is a big athletic guy who can fill it up. He has had so many injury problems the last 2 years is the only real problem. Besides that he is better than channing and Ike

- Neil

by Blazin'aTrail on Dec 23, 2008 2:19 PM PST up reply actions

Shav played past Ike in the preseason

Ike is getting some time so someone might give him some value in a trade pickup — -

Again I’ll remind everyone Channing & Ike showed up as baggage in a trade…Shav was chosen and signed by KP —

I think we will see it all hit critical mass pretty soon cause none of the three have contracts for next year…

by LetsBlaze on Dec 23, 2008 3:55 PM PST up reply actions

That would be a good deal for Portland

Bayless has been testing the fences for weaknesses

by blazeraddict on Dec 23, 2008 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

Friend, you keep posting this

but the fact that his contract doesn’t count in the summer means nothing, because at current levels of play, Ike’s and Channing’s won’t either. They’ll be renounced.

I’d much rather see a trade that actually addresses it long term, if we can do that. The justification for this trade would be if we think Wilcox is a long term solution for us, and we can re-sign him. Another justification would be if KP thinks Freeland is our answer, and Wilcox would just be rent-a-player until he comes over this summer.

I don’t doubt that Wilcox would be better than our guys have played so far. We probably would have to sweeten this with a draft pick or something.

If you can't convince them, confuse them -- Harry Truman, U.S. President

by jscot on Dec 24, 2008 1:28 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly

Wilcox can help right now, this season and in the playoffs. We already know what Frye and Diogu can’t do, and let’s not kid ourselves, they’re not going to improve to the point that they will be productive off the bench in May. Since they’re obviously going to be renounced, why not get something for them now, like a veteran PF/C who can help? One with a contract that is completely non-binding. If Wilcox works out, make him a contract offer for next year, if he doesn’t fit in, wish him well and let him walk. Then address the backup PF position in the offseason with Freeland, a draft choice or another FA. But don’t sit tight and do nothing; the team needs a better option to backup LMA and to play C when GregZilla are hurt or in extreme foul trouble. WIlcox could fill that need with no long-term risk

by two4larue on Dec 24, 2008 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

All good and fair

but you can drop the “his contract doesn’t count against the cap like Frye’s and Diogu’s will”, because theirs won’t, either, unless they start playing at least as good as Wilcox.

So your idea is potentially a good one, but that one argument doesn’t apply.

If you can't convince them, confuse them -- Harry Truman, U.S. President

by jscot on Dec 25, 2008 1:27 PM PST up reply actions

Have you watched Wilcox play?

Actually, that’s not fair, as he does, from time to time, flash the talent that got him drafted so high. But Wilcox is not the answer. Were Frye given the number of minutes Wilcox gets, I’m fairly confident we’d recognize he’s a better player to have than Chris Wilcox.

A and D

Bring Freeland over – roster spots won’t be an issue next season

AND

Pursue a true backup 4/5 banger through trade or free agency (I would say draft too, since these guys are usually pretty available in late 1st/early 2nd, but we need a sure thing next year, not another "maybe")

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
