Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Nuggets--Second Half

Let's see if we can't play a little better defense in the second half than we did in the first.  If so, this game should be winnable.

Chat away!

This game is Portland's to win

All they need to do is go out and grab it. They look lackluster, and like they don’t want the win right now.

It would be hard to get worse

the lay of averages says they should improve in the second half.

Denver should drop a bit, but a lot of Portland opponents shoot over 50% against us…

Brandon was due for a bad game

He’s really struggling out there tonight.

He’s played in Denver before right? It’s not like he’s been injured in previous games.

by Timmay! on Dec 22, 2008 7:36 PM PST reply actions

ODEN

I am really get frustrating with his decision making. this was not apparent at all in college or in his basketball playing history.

he is slower than his opponents, yet he still opts to try to move laterally. if he has bad lateral footwork, which he shouldnt in the future but does now, u cant just stick to ur guns and either foul ur dude or let em get a bucket.

oden is a smart player this is what is most frustrating. he is making stupid decisions. and when he does, no one EVER helps em out. especially aldridge. when ur playing a zone, the big man is supposed to be bailed out when he goes out to help someone on the wings. but if theres a pick, and oden slides to the guy getting the pick set for him, the one that rolls is open EVERY TIME. why? wheres the help D? aldridge is behaving like Amare. being a team means helping each other and always moving, especially in zone. jeez.

the worst part of all this is that i love oden and i think hes gona be a hall of famer. but i just dont understand some of the things he does. when u know u have some work to do in the offseason, u have to adjust inseason. i dont know if hes trying to have some good habits engrained or what but im just annoyed sometimes. maybe my perception is wrong.

by saveourbluths on Dec 22, 2008 7:37 PM PST reply actions

He's a rookie, he makes mistakes

He’s also working back into shape, and this is in a bad elevation.

He’s giving us the definition of needing fan patience.

by Timmay! on Dec 22, 2008 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

FALSE

im sick of saying patience. I KNOW ITS GONA BE A WHILE. i think hes making some good contributions, but u CAN improve inseason. hes not Oliver Miller for god sakes. the guy is a smart player and a solid athlete. yes he will be a better athlete and in better shape in the future, i freakin know that. ur allowed to analyze ur play to get better. that is part of getting better. acknowledging weakness and turning it into strength

Offense Is Like Molasses

My God, they take so long to get into their offense. Don’t Nate has any quick hitting plays? Can’t they at least attempt to push the ball? Seems like the team is taking their sweet time EVERY FREAKING TIME …even when they are down by 6-8 pts with 2 minutes to go.

Total homerism I can deal with since you expect it somewhat..

but not getting the opposing team’s players names right? Especially when they are your division rival…that is sad and they should be fired.

by JasonT on Dec 22, 2008 8:40 PM PST up reply actions

Interestingly enough, the Denver announcers praised the Blazers

throughout the game.

"Aneurysm".

When Outlaw wins a game on a last-second shot, it’s called an "annthefaneurysm". QualityPie

by annthefan on Dec 22, 2008 8:44 PM PST up reply actions

That's nice. But really not knowing the Blazers names shows a lack of dedication to their

profession. College football announcers spend lots of time going over the rosters so they can get the names right from places like Appalacian State. This is your division rival and you can’t get the names right? I repeat they should be fired.

Outlaw was not good at all...His permeter defense is horrible...

and let let his man penetrate and dish at will. I think we could have pulled this out with Rudy is for the final 5 minutes of the game. Outlaw made 1 basket at the end but had 3 off balance end of shot clock bricks. Typical Outlaw.

No passion

The blazers, with the exception of outlaw, played like crap. They have no fire. Chauncey Billups clapping and getting in Bayless’s face? You have to be kidding me. Channing Frye is softer than new playdough. Roy was resting on his laurels, waiting to get the call. If the blazers can become a little more firey, they will start to play good defense. Otherwise, it’s gonna be a shootout every night. We are all finesse, no fire. And to think they make MILLIONS playing this way. I make 34k a year with an hour and half commute each way, and I bring more fire to my job than these jokers. This was pitiful. Young or not, I think Sarge might need to come out a little more. No more coddling.

Overall we got outplayed which means it is possible on any given night Blazers could lose to Denver. Now that means

we have a lot of learning to do. I’m very confident tomorrow will be a win but we need to bring it every night. The fouling was because of laziness. Defenders were a step slow which left off ball defenders constantly out of position. That lead to a lot of free throws.

by BRoyInThe4th on Dec 22, 2008 8:41 PM PST reply actions

no kidding, everytime out on the perimiter the defender lets the denver guy get ahead of him, little to no hustle

overall the team just seems tired which isn’t acceptable but whatever we have to win tomorrow.

Someone at Insidehoops said Portland had to drive to Eugene, to fly to Seattle, to fly to Denver. Now that

sounds like it could make these guys mentally fatigued. Funny I didn’t hear about any of this before the game.

Par for the course

The team still has serious weaknesses with regard to easy buckets and defense. The offense is completely reliant on isolations and extremely passive. And the defense continues to be a sieve. The Nuggets played absolutely horrible tonight and Blazers decided to play even worse.

Dave should include a Nate review every game

as he does with players, this team shows not coaching at all, no defense scheme, absolutely no offensive plan, you can’t trust Roy to save us EVERY game, Nate has no reactions at all, and is killing players bring them in when is not the time… hate to see how game after game Nate is is unable to react and make adjustments in the last minutes…
KP should have a conversation with him.

by ABSF on Dec 22, 2008 8:49 PM PST reply actions

Ordinarily, I'm in Nate's camp...

But there were definitely some iffy substitutions tonight.

On the other hand, the team was in pretty bad foul trouble tonight. That couldn’t have made Nate’s job any easier.

Nate knows exactly what KP wants from him, and what his status with the team is.

He played 7 fewer minutes than LaMarcus Aldridge. Are you going to tell me in those 7 minutes he would not have

gotten to the 15 point mark at least? He would have been in a better rhythm if fouls didn’t take him out of this game. It’s why Oden didn’t get that many rebounds either. Never was in the game long enough to get any. This is part of the ups and downs a team goes through, it’s not a problem.

Blazers don’t give up 40 free throws a night.

by BRoyInThe4th on Dec 22, 2008 8:57 PM PST up reply actions

Wow That's Harsh

The players have a lot of respect for Nate. We aren’t aware of what happens in practice or on the bus. I would think it would very difficult for us to second guess Nate’s decisions.

BUT WE'RE TIRED, THIS GAME DOESN'T MATTER

Isn’t that the excuse we always use when the Blazers don’t show up?

They were so tired and fatigued! This game didn’t really count, we’re not a playoff bubble team.

I'm not sure what you're talking about

Nobody here thinks “being tired” excuses a loss.

Did the Blazers say that in post-game or something?

by Timmay! on Dec 22, 2008 8:56 PM PST up reply actions

What I don't understand is how Nate

is supposed to be a defensive minded coach but as a team we’re near the bottom in the league.

by JoeBlazer on Dec 22, 2008 8:55 PM PST reply actions

I think it's because we have a lot of new players on the team. I mean we played pretty good defense last year

but just couldn’t get rebounds. This year our rebounding is way up but the defense is still learning. Rudy, Batum, and Oden are all learning how to play defense in the NBA. They are a big part of what our team is doing, it takes time.

by BRoyInThe4th on Dec 22, 2008 8:59 PM PST up reply actions

Am I the only one who laughs seeing Oden

when he runs laterely? I keep my eye on oden almost all the time, mainly because he is the only thing i care about when he is on the floor. I want to see big dunks and blocks. When he runs towards the side he looks like he is about to trip.

One Moment from Phx game

did u see when he got the second Off rebound in the 4th QTR? he almost fell backwards on his behind i laughed so hard because he looked funny.

Other than his lateral movement, he seriously needs to stop making stupid fouls…… If u are beat on the play, then let someone else try. If he doesnt get in foul trouble i easily see him being dominant even while looking off balance every time he defends someone

"shaq and zach randolph have the same trainer... "
