Blazersedge 1/3 Season Awards--Defensive Player of the Year
Everybody and their dad's bowling buddy does mid-season awards at the halfway point or All-Star break. We're being different and doing ours twice, once at the 1/3 mark and once at the 2/3 mark of the season. Voting will be open until Monday when the votes will be tabulated and winners declared.
Scroll up and down the page to see the various awards.
We want this to be legit and official so votes will be recorded in the comment section, made only by registered users. Explain all you want but vote CLEARLY and OBVIOUSLY or I won't bother reading your stuff and counting your vote. Don't make this hard on me by writing six paragraphs and ending with a schmozz vote for everybody.
This award is for the Defensive Player of the Year (or 1/3 year, techincally). All players are eligible.

I'm gonna go with Batuuuuum!
Just cause I wanted to say that. And cause he’s a rookie and he get’s tough defensive assignments almost every night. And he holds a candle to this character who’s name sounds like a snout or jaw.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

Joel is an easy choice for people, but Batum has made some amazing plays… blocking Tayshaun Prince from behind. Also I truly believe Batum can be our Tayshaun Prince someday.

I'm plenty positive about lots of things.
Our offense. Roy. Sergio. Batum. Joel and Steve having surprise career years. Coach’s rotations seems smarter and his playcalling seems better lately.
But yeah, our 23rd out of 30 teams ranked defensive rating isn’t something I’m enthusiastic about. Sorry if me pointing out that our defense is bad makes you feel all emo. I guess “glass is half full” means I’m supposed to ignore that we have weaknesses? That’s cheerleading, not fandom.
by howlingfantods on Dec 21, 2008 10:54 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
OK, point-taken....
I didn’t mean to come across as a total homer with my head ostrich-like in the sand.
Obviously, team defense is the weakness of our team and the one thing that is missing to get us to the elite level. That being said however, I think we have made significant strides since last year:
1) rebounding: I think our defensive rebounding % is now 3rd in the league;
2) we have found a promising perimeter defender. Batum shows excellent promise;
3) interior defense: Oden is having an impact. As he learns how to avoid fouls and gets his conditioning and speed back, I think we can all project his ultimate impact.
We still have real deficiencies:
A) Perimeter defense: other than Batum and B Roy when we need it, our perimeter defense is weak. Blake and Sergio are better than last year, but still adequate at best. I think JBay is the long range answer at PG;
B) Rotations: if a team is going to play as much zone as Portland does, rotations have to be quick. The Blazers are frequently late and frequently appear unsure about who needs to be where. When the perimeter defense breaks down which is way too often, LMA and Oden are often late in trying to close the lane.
C) Pick and roll defense: I see this as a consistent weakness.
D) Breakdowns in transition defense: this just makes me crazy.
Curious to know what you think of my list and your thoughts on what we need to do to improve?
by upper left corner on Dec 21, 2008 11:18 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Since you asked . . .
A. Yes, it’s the team’s most glaring weakness. I also
belive BRex will help with superior strength & quicks.
How quick he learns the finer points will be the test.
BRoy’s next step in evolution is becoming a stopper
at the 2, and then you mix in 3M and Batuuuum at the
3 with time and work. The PG defender is the key in
this scenario.
B. Time and growth will solve this problem. GO, Batuuuum,
Rudy & BRex are all rookies. The rest, well you know.
C. See B.
D. See B & C.

Is it the players or the system?
I honestly don’t know. It’s hard to believe we can be this bad just based on the players though; Joel, Oden, Batum are all good defenders. Roy is a decent defender, although he usually draws the easier wing assignment so he doesn’t have to work that hard on that end. Steve and Sergio have really improved their on-ball defense. LMA is disappointing but not worse than a little below average. Outlaw and Frye remain disasters. Rudy gets pushed around pretty easily but he’s active and keeps his hands up and pesters.
So all put together, with several quality defenders and a couple of decent ones who are all coached to prioritize defense, we should be getting much better results. Considering a full third of the teams in the league are already thinking lottery and the level of dysfunction at the bottom of the standings, the fact that those teams are our peers defensively despite our having guys with some talent defensively plus being well-coached in the sense of being involved and invested in trying to be good defenders makes me think that the problem must be the system.
Lately, we’ve been switching every pick and roll. Our guys don’t even bother to try to hard trap or fight through screens. It makes the offense very simple for the opponent. Both the ballhandler and the picker both now have mismatches that can be exploited. We try to help on the small guy on the roller when the ball goes there with the other big, which leads to a breakdown on defense – an open big ready to lay it up or open three point shooters on the weakside. We’re overloading on the strong side by bringing help but it’s rarely in a way that actually causes much disruption.
Compare this to the Celts, or the Lakers earlier this season, who strongly overload strong side in order to wreak havoc on spacing, shut down passing lanes, and create turnovers. It’s an active strong side overload instead of the passive and reactive help switching we do, which always comes later and exposes the weakside.
Nate still seems to be trying to replicate the Pistons defense from their championship days, based heavily on man defense, not a lot of gambling on takeaways steals and blocks, but instead focused on switching, staying in front of your man, and putting hands in faces. I’m not sure that our squad is right for it, or if that was a style that’s really only suited to the Pistons, who had an unusually big and strong lead guard in Billups, an unusually small and quick anchor in Ben Wallace, and extremely long all-defense guys in Sheed and Prince.
The transition defense… well, that happens when your offensive identity is based so much on crashing the offensive boards. We probably need to find a healthier balance here, but I’m not that worried about that to be honest.
by howlingfantods on Dec 22, 2008 8:58 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
You make a lot of sense, but....
…..given that Nate was selected to be the lead defensive coach for Team USA , and given his rep as a defensive player and his reported focus on defense in practice, I am reluctant to question his teaching or his scheme. He has forgotten more than I know…….
One observation, I think our problem starts at the PG position. Blake and Sergio are doing better at cutting down on the Ole! defense, but it seems like they are doing so by backing off on the opposing PG. They don’t seem to get much pressure on the ball. The opposing PG is able to get to what ever spot they want to on the floor. Backing off also gives the opposing PG lots of passing angles and opportunities for lightly contested pull-ups and step-backs.
I suspect that we will never be good on defense until we have somebody who can get inside the opposing PG’s shorts. We need somebody who has the foot speed and the upper-body strength to pester and pressure without getting consistently burned. I hope that JBay is that guy, but I don’t know.
A second observation, I agree that our help seems to be consistently late, and that that leaves us vulnerable on the weak-side. We have lousy 3pt defense I think this is why. We are frequently scrambling to catch up to the ball with the result being a wide-open three.
Regarding Nate, do you think he is a bad coach? Do you think he doesn’t understand his personnel, or doesn’t get the Xs and Os? Or, do you just think he is trying to impose a framework that does not fit our personnel. Do you think he will change the scheme, or the guys will get better, or do you think we need different personnel or a different coach.

Batum has far exceeded expectations, and Oden has done things for stretches that Joel could never do… but Joel has done his defensive work every night, for long minutes when Greg was too out of shape or in too much foul trouble to be on the floor. . That is true to an extent – but it doesn’t seem to hamper their offensive efficiency, though. He still has little to no effect on teams with center who play from the top of the key (Sac, GS, Miami, etc, etc) or teams with elite big men (ORL, HOU, PHX, etc).

One vote for LaMarcus
Joel has this locked up so I am voting for Aldridge because I think he is our best all-around defender.
1. He pressures the ball on the inbounds after a made basket allowing the defense to get back.
2. He can switch at the top on the pick and roll and keep PGs (Nash the most notable) from getting the ball into the post and stops penetration.
3. He has great anticipation for blocks and steals.
4. Great helper from the weakside.
5. No doubt Joel is better on the block but LMA holds his own down there.

Less minutes means less exhaustion, hence great playing.

Joel Przybilla
it’s not even a contest, though Batum has done well all things considered.
Things happen for a reason they say, but I say there's a reason things happen.

Joel for now.
He’s doing a great job. Hopefully soon it will be Oden making the biggest defensive impact on the Blazers.

He has guarded a lot of all stars, and done pretty well

Obvious even before opening the comments. This guy “brings it” when it comes to the team’s defense.

Hopefully he can show Oden how to play post defense.

Can’t choose half of the two-headed monster. The twin towers are the only positive thing keeping the D from scaring small children it’s so ugly.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

Gotta be Joel
I love what Nic’s doing on defense, and I think he could be a league standout in that category…but for this 1/3 of the season, oftentimes it’s seemed like Joel’s been the ONLY one playing defense.

Batum’s a close second and LaMarcus is third, but Joel has been a beast patrolling the paint.

If Greg was the full time Center he would definatley win it but since they split time, I think Joels done a little bit more because of his experience.

Joel always has been the man.
He’s a student of the defensive game, and I hope a great teacher :)

Joel does the dirty work and shows Greg how to go toe to toe with the best in the league.

Joel
Tireless and well timed. Joel has made the transformation from wondering what everyone expects to showing everyone what they can expect. I can’t think of a better example for Greg Oden.

Joel
is so hot on defense right now. Also, off-topic but he has been finishing very nicely this year at the rim.
