Blazersedge 1/3 Season Awards--Biggest Letdown
Everybody and their brother's nephew does mid-season awards at the halfway point or All-Star break. We're being different and doing ours twice, once at the 1/3 mark and once at the 2/3 mark of the season. Voting will be open until Monday when the votes will be tabulated and winners declared.
Scroll up and down the page to see the various awards.
We want this to be legit and official so votes will be recorded in the comment section, made only by registered users. Explain all you want but vote CLEARLY and OBVIOUSLY or I won't bother reading your stuff and counting your vote. Don't make this hard on me by writing six paragraphs and ending with a schmozz vote for everybody.
This award is for the Biggest Letdown, judged by whatever criteria you see fit. All players are eligible. It's the only award players probably don't want to get!
Register your vote below and check back to see how your guy is doing!

My Personal Biggest Letdown

Next time, Dave, make it easy on yourself
Put each possible candidate in a reply yourself, and tell people to rec the one they want. They can comment under each one as to why they like that one, but only the recs will be counted.
When I rule the world, many efficiencies like this will be implemented.

I love this idea. Good call jscot.
Two things though:
1. Don’t reply under the player, add posts at the bottom. Otherwise you need to scroll for an eternity to find the player you want to vote for.
This second one is only for the year-end awards.
Give a BE member (of your choosing) a chance to make the case for that player in one paragraph or less, and include it in the post.
Then you’ll have 15 posts at the top, one for each player, and a short “closing argument” in favor of each player. A way to make sure you know you’ve thought about every player thoroughly if you’re unsure.

Really needs his shot back as well.
The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

I agree - Frye
He continue to show off his inability to rebound, which is a must for any PF. He is a SF trapped in a PF’s body, minus the quickness. I love the guy but if he can’t bruise with the big boyz, he’s loosing out to Diagu.

Outlaw is inconsistent in a good chunk of minutes, has a rookie starting over him, and is in his 6th season. He’s got so much going for him, but he just can’t seem to put it together in the way we need.
I have to pass on Frye because he’s stuck in no man’s land as far as minutes go. I can’t expect a guy getting so few minutes (especially a shooter instead of a hustle player) to be shooting the lights out.

Poor Greg, I know your reading this buddy, and your probably not too pleased I have given this award to you. But maybe you need it buddy. Wake up. Your having a great season. I’m not really giving this award to you cause I think your under-performing, I think your performing, I’m giving this to you because I think you could be over-performing.
Can you please just crush some fools for a game or three in a row? Get going on some little streak so I can do my little Oden Shuffle. You know the one where you hang on the rim after you dunk it, but then realized you just got called for a foul, so you decide your not a fan of it and you stop doing it post haste. Yeah, it’s going out of fashion. Don’t worry big fella, you won’t be dancing that jig for long.

Outlaw
I like the guy’s character, I think his personality is great for this team, but his basketball IQ is just ridiculous. I’m sick of seeing him pass up an open 3 for him to drive inside and take an off kilter, twisted 2 point jumper that barely hits rim in important stretches of games. He’s an athletic freak, I don’t get why he can’t get a dunk or even a decent look more often. He’s had enough experience to at least improve a bit. This doesn’t mean I want him traded though, he’s just the biggest disappointment in my opinion.

Bayless
I love the guy, but I expected him to crack the rotation and be making an impact. Still, I’m not knocking him — after just 1 year of college, he’s got to have a learning curve.
By the way, about Oden
I disagree with those who are saying Oden. At the beginning of the season when expectations were realistic, if you’d been told Oden would be averaging 8 points, 8 rebounds and a block and a half you’d have been fairly happy with that. Stay realistic, folks!

Bayless
I had high hopes for this kid at the start of the season. I know Blake and Sergio have been playing well, but when I watched the games this summer (a first for me) I thought this kid was going to be a big part of our growth this year. We have 3 other rooks making contributions, I just thought Bayless would be one.

has nothing to do with his game, and matter of fact he would probably agree on this one. He was easily the one non-rookie player i was the most excited to see this season. All through the off season I had this building sense that something special was about to bust out of Martell, we would finally see his true form… and then the injury… I still feel the same way, it is just a bummer that we haven’t gotten to see it yet and I am waiting with baited breath for his return.

He tantalized us with his end of season streak. Then he goes out and supposedly hones his 3PT shot over the summer. After ankle surgery, he comes back early.
But then he dissapoints with the performance over the season so far. I still can’t get over that sequence he had against Boston. Those were the ugliest 2 minutes of NBA basketball you will ever see.

Not because he didn’t play well, but precisely because he looked great in training camp and in combo with Rudy during the pre-season, only to not register a full game to date. This should have been his breakout season where he really establishes his long-term future with the team, and I still hope it could be. Just imagine the media storm for a second if Greg had broken a bone in his foot instead of gotten an ankle sprain. Get well, Martell.

by nikolokolus on Dec 21, 2008 9:37 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Probably our unrealistic expectations
All things considered, this is a YOUNG team and has progressed amazingly. Unfortunately, we become spoiled with a good show, and tend think that everyone has to develop like Roy has.
Players have peaks and limits and hard work will only help you maximize your potential. If hard work automatically merited perfection, don’t you think that instead of blogging about NBA players, most of us would be alongside them launching tre’s, dropping dimes and making commercials?
I had to remind myself of that before I wrote this post and almost said that LaMarcus should be doing more for us. He’s having a good year but no, he hasn’t doubled his performance like he did in his second year.
I don’t think that quite qualifies as a let-down.

LaMarcus has had a pretty good year, but I really thought that this year would be the year he would come into his own and play at an all-star level. Unfortunately he isn’t playing any better than he did last year. I still think he is playing well, but I had really high expectations for him this year.
The fact that a lot of people think that the MVP for the team is Joel (and justifiably so) is kind of the point I am trying to make. LMA should be the #2 guy on this team no questions asked and should be right up there with Roy.

He was supposed to be the team’s leading scorer. It’s his third year in the league and he might have taken a step back from last year. Reason being, this is about biggest disappointment. I didn’t have much expectations for Frye, and have never been real high on Travis. My disappointment in Greg will start going away when he learns how a.) not to foul so much, b.) to go up for a shot without being blocked so much, and c.) to walk on the court with the attitude of a 7 ft 285 lb man that knows he’s THE BIGGEST BADDEST DUDE ON THE COURT, not like a scared teenager! I love Greg though, and I know that by 2/3rd’s of the season this will all be for naught as he will be the biggest baddest dude on the court.

I hate to say it because I like the guy so much, but Frye turned in one of the worst performances in a short period of time against Boston that I’ve ever seen by someone in a Blazer uniform. Oden’s young—very young—and learning. Fyre’s an experienced PF who’s been playing like the greenest, rookie SG. To elaborate further would be too painful.

Three different answers:
1) Player I thought would have a breakout season and so far hasn’t: Webster
2) Player I thought would make a nice step forward but has regressed: Frye
3) Player I thought would be maddeningly inconsistent and was lived up to expectations: Trout
Trout deserves credit for his 3pt shooting, but the rest has been his usual mix of “the good, the bad, and the ugly.”

just because we’d heard so much about how he was working so hard this preseason, and JQ was hyping him up saying how good he’d be, and he’s not even in the rotation right now. Channing is a cool cat and a great teammate, but his being dropped from the rotation speaks volumes as to how he has regressed.
Martell comes in at #2, solely because of the injury bug that’s bit him like Dracula bites into a juicy carotid. Get well soon, ’Tell!

c’mon Dave this one isn’t fair….does it have to be a player, can’t it be a moment like Blake missing the clutch free throws or something else?? or like not seeing Bayless play being a letdown? you can’t let him win biggest letdown with all the class he has shown us and also with his summer league play and obvious potential?? and why all the Channing haters did?? were you not at the Houston game or the Spurs game??
but lately I am out on Outlaw ok because unless he makes his first shot of the game he is worthless, and he needs to play better D this year

Martell's Injury
I think Martell is a key member to this squad. These two injuries have stunted the development of the team even though they are still playing very well. He is one of the few members of the team besides Brandon that attacks the basket visiously, something we need to see more of. The more we attack the basket the more our outside shooters are open, the more open our inside guys are as the defense is forced to help out and the more we get to the line.

Frye
by far. I hope he can get some sort of groove back. I also thought Ike would challenge for time with toughness inside, rebounding etc. But Frye is a shell of himself from last year. If one of the big men goes out for a few games, it will be interesting to see if he can jump start his game with some minutes. It seemed like he produced last year when he knew he would get minutes and struggled when he played in short spurts.

Not even close. Dude fell off the face of the earth this year.
People voting for Outlaw probably didn’t like Outlaw before this year. Biggest letdown to me means that you have a specific level of expectations for someone and they fail to meet them. Frye showed good promise as a backup the latter half of last season, and has been 4 fouls per game and not much else so far this year.

I understand the Frye vote, but he doesn’t have the role that Outlaw has. Travis is supposed to be the great scorer off the bench, running isos for him and all that. He just seems to make the worst possible decision everytime he touches the ball. Frye just shoots and misses, I can live with that in his depleted minutes roll, but Travis is killing me.

Rudy came down to earth, but I’m decently happy.
Nope, it’s LMA all the way. He did not come at even close to an all star level. He refuses to use his skills to attack the basket. His defense isn’t where I’d like it to be.

It was a toss up
between LMA and Oden for me (I chose Oden). LMA’s stats aren’t bad, but he hasn’t dominated like I think he can. I remember sitting at the GS game wondering why the heck he wasn’t posting up Maggette. He needs to watch footage of Tim Duncan to learn how to play power forward.

The biggest difference between what was expected and what has come to pass is with LMA.
He’s struggled.
He’s showing signs of making the leap, and playing MUCH better lately. I’m not worried long term.
I also chose him as non-Roy MVP. So really this says more about my expectations for Lamarcus than it does about his performance. I think he’ll be an all-star in two years.

It hurt to see Martell go down during the Preseason in October. But it really HURT when he re-injured his foot against the Raptors. When he is hitting from beyond the arc the Blazers offense runs at another level. I look forward to seeing him come back in time for the playoffs.

He’s been the second best on this team, but the gap between him and Roy should not be anywhere near the chasm it is right now. Last year he made a legit case for MIP, but this year he hasn’t been that go-to guy that Brandon needs, and he hasn’t been helpful in the fourth quarter for any game this season. That needs to change for this to be a title team.

But I’m not disappointed with Martell, just by the fact he hasn’t been able to play.
Truth be told, I am not disappointed in the least by this team. In fact I have been thrilled and excited. They have pretty much lived up to my expectations (which I thought might have been unreasonably over-enthusiastic) and in some cases exceeded them. If I had to point to one thing I have been disappointed in, it has to be ….

Nate
I want to be clear. I love that Nate is our coach. I do not want to see him fired. I want him to be the blazers coach. HOWEVER, I was expecting a lot more of a plan on defense. When the Blazers defend well they are very hard to beat. Some nights it looks like we are totally confused about what we want to do at the defensive end of the court.
The Blazers are a young team, but Nate has been around as a coach and a player for a long time in the NBA. At times he is brilliant in his ability to know when to put a player in the game to get the team doing whatever they aren’t doing out there. For an example I can site the Houston game when he knew it was time to ride Travis Outlaw. That was Outlaw’s breakout game and he has been much better since then. However, how can anyone forget the last game at PHX when it seemed like he was playing Bayless and Frye only because they have ties to Arizona. YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME! Nate has to improve his consistency just like a lot of our young guys do. He has been around, I expect him to improve as much as I expect Greg Oden to improve.

He was awesome filling in for Joel last season but now, for whatever reason, whether it’s his surgery, or lifting too many weights, he’s slow and now not shooting well. His intensity seems for poop.
Nate needs to run some Sloan-esqe plays to get some of these low BBIQ forwards some easy buckets in the paint.
