After watching Travis in the Phoenix game down the stretch...it struck me how impossible of a team we are to guard in the closing minutes of the game if we have one of our non-Roy perimeter players generating points off the dribble.
Teams now send an additional defender at Roy when he is behind the 3 point line. When Roy passes, he usually sends the ball in the middle to Aldridge. At that point it is 4 on 3. However, Aldridge does not pose much of a threat out top other than an above average jump shooter. He is not going to drive. So he is either going to pass or shoot. If somehow the ball goes to Rudy, at this point, he is a great 3 point shooter, ally-oop finisher and passer, but off the dribble between the basket and the 3 point line he struggles (I can't remember where I say it, but there was a stat that showed between 3 and 22 feet Rudy's shooting is drastically worse than from beyond the 3 point line and point blank (and most of those point blanks were ally-oops)....those are usually those runners or fade aways he shoots around the free throw line. Blake is showing some promise scoring or creating off the dribble, but teams will definitely want Blake rather than Roy with the ball, even if it means 3 on 4. When Travis is on, he kills other teams b/c they cannot afford to double for fear of the ball going back to Roy. The problem is that Travis, thus far, is wildly inconsistent off the dribble. And since Bayless is not getting any playing time down the stretch, all we have to break down the defense when the ball is out of Roy's hands is Blake, Rudy and Aldridge...all of which are ok options, but not exactly going to make teams think twice about doubling Roy out top. So I was wondering what would this team look like with one more perimeter player who scores off the dribble well?
Should we go after one of the Small Forward free agents that may fit the bill:
Lamar Odom, Shawn Marion, Al Harrington, Hedo Turkoglu
Or go for a trade? There are few out there right now that might be ripe for the picking: Josh Howard. Gerald Wallace. Kevin Durant (just kidding).
What do you guys think? I really think we are one permeter scorer away from being impossible to guard down the stretch of games.
