Trade Brandon???
Zippy chance. Never!!
Now that I have (in a very evil way) coaxed your attention, though, I am wondering what the rest of you think. I was watching the game with some friends tonight, and I argued that the only player in the league that I would be willing to trade Brandon for, would be LeBron.
The qualifiers, obviously, would be age, potential, and current value. My thought is that Brandon ranks in the top 10 in the league in basketball IQ, quickness, finishing, court awareness, ability to draw the foul, and clutch play.
You can point to players like James, K*be, CP3, Dwight Howard, Amare, Bosh, KG, Nash, Dirk, Wade, etc and single out stats to argue that they may be better statistically, or more important to their team, but I wouldn't trade Brandon for any of them except for LeBron, and I am not even sure I would feel good about that.
In fact, let me clarify that Brandon is my favorite player in the NBA, and that I have faith that he will lead us to multiple championships... Ahhh. i feel better now!
So... i guess i will make a poll out of this.
UPDATE:: ARRRGGGHH I voted for LeBron... So I guess I am a traitor. But I would have picked Jordan over Drexler, too, so the blood was tainted to begin with. Forgive me, Father Pritchard, I have sinned!

I love Brandon Roy more than anyone
but objectivly it seems to me that his rep may be slightly more inflated than his actual talent level. The fan boy in my yells, “Brandon is the best player in the league!”, but the realist in me knows that from your list at least Kobe, Lebron, Garnett, Paul and Amare are all probably better players than B-Roy.
In fact that is one of the things that makes Brandon so endearing is that he is NOT the best player in the league, in fact he probably isn’t the most skilled player on his own team, yet he has a huge effect on every single game he plays in.
Final answer though is I would trade BRoy for at least have of the players above.
Go M's
Kobe, Garnett, and Paul
Are all significantly older than Roy though, Age is a big qualifier.
Garnett is old (for the nba)
and I think Brandon is better at his position. As it is Amare and Bosh are better and if you consider him a PF/C then there is also D. Ho. Garnett was a god in his prime but he is on the other side now.
He's Coming! Oden Slayer of Giants
I guess I should qualify
that with physical skills. Because Brandons BBIQ is through the roof, and he intagibles (Unflapability) are amazing, and he gets alot more out of his skills then all the other players on the team, but as far as just pure physical skill, Oden (can’t teach 7 feet), LMA, and probably even trout (freakish athlete) all have better physical skills.
Go M's
Umm, physical height and/or athletic ability des not equal skills - each are good but not the same.

Exactly, the word means something you've built up over time
usually a motion that’s highly refined and technical. There is simply no player on the Blazers and very, very few in the league that a more skilled BBall players that Roy.

Isn’t this just Brandon’s third year in the league? There just might be more upside than is currently visible!
Exactly!!
The only three I would even CONSIDER would be LeBron, CP3 or Howard, due to youth… The rest of these guys have too few “peak” years left in them to even be in the same conversation as B-Roy.
The ceiling is high, my friends. Don’t think for a minute that Brandon couldn’t average 25+ per game if that is what he was asked to do.

My feeling as well
I don’t think that anyone, save LeBron or CP3 would be a good choice. They are better players and they both play styles that fit in with our current team. I don’t think I’d go for Howard, because he would be redundant with Oden. On the other hand, it would hardly be a slam dunk, because I severely question LeBron’s attitude and how his personality would fit with out team.
age is hugely important
and because of that the only two I would be willing to trade Roy for are CP3 and Lebron. Both are very young, and have both proven that they are clutch players who make their teammates better. Dwight Howard is young and talented as well, but our team doesn’t need another center.
honestly?
If the other GMs offered a straight up trade for any of the guys above (assume salary cap fillers as needed – no talent though), then I would pull the trigger on LeBron, Paul and probably DWade.
Postionally, Howard and Bosh wouldn’t fit with our other players, but you would have to think about doing those deals too, and then try to move either LMA or Greg for a top notch guard.
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
I figured out who Brandon Roy plays like...
……………………………. Deron Williams.
That is all.
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
Nobody
Simply because there’s a chance this team’s chemistry might fall apart if he goes away.
Nobody
I want to win with the roster we have built from the ground up. Brandon Roy is also my favorite player…………ever…………..I think he has surpassed Sabonis.
it's not my blog -- and i like Dave
but if it was my blog and i was paying attention i would have immediately deleted your post.

Totally agree! I mean...what the...
Seriously!
I felt dirty reading it, I felt dirty thinking about it, I just felt dirty and left with a sense of sorrow! Brandon is the heart and soul of this team. No one would argue that. Why do people continue to torment me with questions like this.
Every player is different, it’s like comparing apples and oranges. But, beyond that, it’s like saying I’ll trade you my hot girlfriend, for one that may or may not be a little better looking…and one that my family may or may not like.
Give me BROY. He’s the one that gave the franchise new life 3 years ago. Pre-Roy there was nothing but dirty feelings. And…no one in the family liked who we were bring home for the holidays.
A vote for Roy:
In my book, there are only 3 players in the NBA who are more valuable to their teams than Roy: Bryant, Wade and James.
That's well put -- and of those, you don't do the deal for Wade and have to think long and hard about the other two.
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
Roy
because even if he isn’t quite as talented as a Lebron or Kobe he is a team oriented player and you don’t have to worry about him talking about his F.A. status 2 years ahead of time. I feel for Cleveland right now, if Brandon was making claims he may end up in NY right now I probably would have a different opinion. I think Brandon wants to stay in Portland long term so that counts for a lot in my book.

I love these blazers bc of character
and even if Lebron is a much better player than Roy…I would not want to trade him…even if it’s straight up. A lot of people came back to this team after they got rid of the jailblazers…i’d hate to see us go down that path of talent first character 2nd again. I’m not saying Lebron has poor character or anything, but its just a step in that path.
Honor Terry Porter
CP in a second
With all our weapons on offense? He’d just go nuts. Think about how many good jumpshooters are on our team. Everytime he drove and penetrated he could dish to anyone on the floor for a bucket. And imagine we made the trade – look at our lineup
CPaul / Blake / Sergio
Martell / Rudy
Batum / Outlaw
LMA / Fry
Oden / Pryz
That is a championship team.
The Odenphant is true king of the jungle.
CP3 is the only one that I would do it for
but I would also want to send Blake and Diogu to get Peja.

I voted "None of the Above"
Sure, LeBron is spectacular. He does things that make your jaw drop. He’s capable of taking over games single-handedly. But Brandon Roy is the most deceptive player I’ve ever watched. In that respect, he is the polar opposite of LeBron James.
First, Roy is FAR more athletically gifted than he appears to be. As Dwayne Wade put it last season, “Roy is a controlled me.” I heard the dummies on 1080 am last season saying Roy’s vertical jump is around 34 inches—when in fact it was measured at 40". Similarly, Roy can move extremely quickly—when he wants to. And he’s very, very strong. Have you EVER seen anyone rip the ball away from Brandon Roy? But unlike LeBron or Wade, Roy never rips his shirt off or flexes his muscles, and he only runs as fast or jumps as high as the situation demands. He never does ANYTHING for show.
Another aspect of Roy’s deceptiveness is his ability to dictate tempo. It’s easy to miss this entirely. But I recall Kenny Smith and Magic Johnson, last season, commenting on how rare and powerful Roy’s abilty to control tempo is. Last night on Courtside, Coach Dean D. was making the same point, only even more forcefully. As he put it, Roy doesn’t let you dictate tempo to him. He dictates the tempo to YOU. Imagine how reassuring it is to play alongside a guy like that.
You could clearly see this ability of Roy’s down the stretch of the Pistons game. Brandon Roy was like the conductor of a great orchestra, utilizing his teammates as the instruments. It was really clinical how he dismantled the Pistons—always at HIS pace. Nothing the Pistons did made the least difference; they were helpless.
Then there’s Roy’s leadership. Roy’s not a heavyhanded leader—getting in his teammates’ faces all the time like Chris Paul or Magic Johnson. But he’s very effective in maintaining team harmony and focus—i.e. "chemistry.’ And Blazer fans, more than anyone, should understand the importance of chemistry in team success.
On the one hand, they have the example of the ‘77 Blazers, who, on paper, had NO CHANCE against the ’76ers in the finals. Yet they won, as Bobby Gross said (also on last night’s Courtside), because they were not only talented but absolutely unselfish. On the other hand, Blazer fans have the example of the Jailblazers, who couldn’t get it done because, in the end, they were a group of talented individuals, not a team. Talk about role reversal: the Jail Blazers were the ’77 Philly team all over again!
Yet so many Blazer fans assume this current squad would be better if it had LeBron James (who refers to his teammates as his “supporting cast”) in the place of Brandon Roy. All I can say is: we have some very slow learners here in Portland. I predict that over the next decade, the Blazers—led by Brandon Roy—will be the thorn in LeBron’s side, repeatedly standing in the way of his manifest destiny to rule the NBA. That would be sweet to watch, wouldn’t it?

This team is what it is because of Brandon.
People really underestimate what a calm and nice leader can do for a team. Brandon doesn’t yell at his team mates and he doesn’t often let the game get to him. This over somebody like Lebron or CP or Kobe yelling at everybody and throwing blame around is really important for a young team.
And it’s not like Brandon is short on talent, make no mistake he could be a 25ppg guy if that was really important to him.
Would some of those guys be a talent upgrade though? Sure… but I wouldn’t trade Brandon’s unique leadership and calming presence for any of those superstars. CP is amazing, I love the guy. I’m an awe of Lebrons physicality and skills, and I respect Kobe the basketball player even though I cannot stand him as a person, but there is no way I would trade away the guy who lead our franchise back to respectability.
Brandon may not be considered a superstar by many outside of Portland, but he is a VERY good basketball player and one of the best leaders in the league. He’s OUR superstar.
Look at the rest of our team
Getting a center or PF means you are getting a sub or diminishing the PT (and thus value) of the guys we have now. There is no player at those positions that, combined with the loss of value of our current players and the loss of Roy, would even come close to making it worth it.
Thus, we’re left with PG and wings.
Youth then becomes an issue. This team has been built to contend a long, long time, and with Roy, that will be the case. Check Nash off the list. Wade seems injury prone, so check him off the list, too.
Chemistry/team philosophy says Kobe is unlikely. His horizon is also not as long as Roy’s — we can hope for 10 more years of Brandon, maybe 12-14, since his value isn’t predicated on crazy athleticism. Kobe may only be at that level for 3-4 more, probably a little longer but no guarantees. You might go get Kobe as a FA, but you wouldn’t trade Roy for him, I don’t think. Not on this team, with it’s long horizon. Close call. He’s much better NOW, but we’re looking not just 3 years down the road, but 8-10 years.
Who’s left? LeBron and Paul. These are no-brainers. Start Rudy, trade a PG and a SF for a good backup SG, and win 70+ games a year.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.
Better Individual Player or Better for this Team
Some of the players you have mentioned above in the poll might be better individually than Brandon, but Brandon as of now is the best “fit” for this team.Let the guys play together for the year and then we’ll know what we need to make the team better.
Something else not realted to the post: It’s amazing what a brilliant job KP did in the 2006 draft. 2 All Stars(ok – LMA will get there soon) and a talented and increasingly solid point guard(who could develop into a starter sooner than later). Most teams need multiple drafts with lottery picks to get that kind of returns..
Paul, James or Wade.
No doubt. Those guys could fill in the hole he leaves and are also simply better. I don’t think that’s really even a debate.
I would take Stoudemire too, but he wouldn’t fill the holes Roy would leave so I’ll keep Roy.
Dave
Can we have a policy against yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater? Even if this post is really good, it’s poor taste to bait the title.
M, period. Fresh, comma.
If I'm a regular "Trade Proposal" poster-type...
and my stance is that it’s best to sell high (trade) and buy low (acquire), I gotta ship out Roy.
I mean, that’s what good, smart GM’s do, right?
But alas… I’m not that guy. Call me boring. Call me level headed. Or call me freethrows. Keep Roy.
How dare you.

Blasphemy
Can’t we be loyal a little while longer?
I know, I know, its ok to hypothesize and wonder, I guess.
Cant be any more emphatic
but to say that you can’t be serious!!! He has that “something” that not only wins us game sbut holds this young team together. He is a floor general and unlike some of the other “more talented” names mentioned will not choke, become selfish, or make demands threatening to leave his team and city behind. I imagine it must be painful for some of us to see how many picked Lebron. Give me a break and end this ridiculous hypothetical now. BROY FOR LIFE. LAMARCUS FOR LIFE. WEBSTER, RUDY, PRYZBILLA FOR LIFE!!!! ODEN? I’ll have to wait and see…

I REALLY HATE THAT THIS IS EVEN COMING UP...
Let’s not act like we have been good for the past decade and we’re restless already, how can this even be discussed… Really? Lebron???? C’MON guys and gals we have something special and I feel almost certan that that move would make us worse off ie. Lebron demands the ball and will not get other involved. Hate this, sorry to get so into it but I just hate it

it's known that the players get into their computers a lot
how do we know they never see this? and then travis sees the headline and mentions it to brandon. great. just great. every little bit helps when a player becomes a free agent.

I ONLY make this trade for one player
Chris Paul. He brings you the same things that Roy does, and he might have just that little extra talent edge as well. Plus, he’s a team leader like Roy is.
Of course, this is never happening, and I’m extremely happy that it’s not, cause it’d kill me to have to make that decision. Gotta love having Brandon Roy on this team.
Besides, the team that we have right now certainly isn’t looking like a team that’s missing much.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
voted other
wouldn’t trade roy.
but if someone pulled a gun out of their warm up pants and forced me to trade him i’d ask for tony parker.
