too wordy

and why is a “Redic…” instead of the proper “Ridiculous”? Not that it matters. BRoy is what we got, and that ain’t much. It’s from the “JayArruh” (Jason Richardson) school of nicknames, that is, ones that are weak.

M, period. Fresh, comma.

Yay new thread

Portland is probably planning some nice adjustments at halftime.

And is being reminded they played terribly and are down by 2.

this should be a general rule for all browsing

never use IE. If you are stuck on Windows, you’d be best served by using the free Google Chrome—this page will probably perform about twice as fast considering it is running some serious Javascript.

Also using Firefox here.

Seems fine. It’ll bog down on big sites eventually, but closing and reopening actually clears it up and it doesn’t slow down for days again.

Why do the announcers drool over the MSG as if it's special?

I’ve been there. It was nothing special.

“The cheer at MSG is different from any other place”. Yeah right.

by Timmay! on Dec 2, 2008 5:45 PM PST reply actions

NY just wants to believe there's something about NY

I actually didn’t hate it when I worked there for a bit. But it’s not even a tenth as special as they like to believe.

If we play defense this half, we win.

Does anyone have a link to Barrett and Rice, or are we stuck with Clyde?

Blazers shot 18 3-pointers and had 10 points in the paint

Nough…said.

Defense improved in the 2nd quarter. The guard defense from Sergio, Rudy, and Blake is a sieve or fouling. Outlaw had a few stupid defensive lapses, but made some shots. Roy got it going. Aldridge and Oden need to bring it.

All in all, being down 2 at the half is not bad considering how terrible the Blazers performed. At least they rebounded.

He knows what he is

a big man with no low post game and limited handle, who happens to shoot jumpers well and so stays where he plays best. Outside.

They did not work him screen and pop with Sergio tonight, where he gets good looks and makes opposing defenses pay for trapping the ball. Maybe because teams have figured out they don’t really have to trap either Sergio or Blake off the pick and roll.

1st half observations/questions

1. Not sure about Nate’s color combo tonight. Is that undershirt Lavender?
2. Mike Rice should stick to monosyllabism. He butchered “Cognizance” unless anyone else knows what he said.
3. The PTB didnt seal off the Knicks outside shooters. That will stop 2nd half.
4. Over 1000 posts first half game thread. Can it be eclipsed?

by Black84GTI on Dec 2, 2008 6:10 PM PST up reply actions

My two cents

They were hitting outside shots and it is tough for our bigs to cover perimeter players. Plus our guards were not getting around screens which meant we needed weakside help which did not come

They left Oden open but left him open at the free throw line where he was not helpful. The three times where we sent Batum there to receive the ball against the zone trap, Batum made the pass for an easy jumper

They rotated an extra man underneath against the screen and roll, picking up Greg while the ball was being doubled. When we flashed a player to the free throw line from the weak side, we made them pay

What a frustrating frustrating game. I hate Mike D’Antoni, almost as much as I hate Don Nelson.

He is a rookie

and this is the first time he has played a D’Antoni coached team. It’s a little like watching college defenses come up against the spread option (see Civil War). It can make good players look silly.

But if you DVRed this, take a look back at the screens that Greg and Joel got beat on. The weakside defenders were so concerned about losing players out at the arc that they never rotated across

Did not take a lot of shots and missed them all

but played well overall, I thought. He seemed much more active on the boards than the boxscore gives him credit for – in fact, I remember an offensive rebound, off an Oden dunk, that the box does not credit him for

Not surprised.

Billups-for-Iverson was a steal for Denver. Now they have a playmaker, and gave up a player they weren’t going to keep after the season anyway.

I’ll be shocked if they miss the playoffs. Portland has to hope for Phoenix or Dallas to fall at this point, unless injuries take out Houston.

I’ll take any win, but I was sorry to see the Blazers fall into the Knicks trap so quickly tonight. They need to dictate the game, especially to weaker teams. Why did it take until halftime for Nate to talk his team into settling for quick threes?

Ha!

I was following these threads all along at work. Enjoyed all the fretting and fussing over the crappy start and bad shots. Glad to see we pulled it out. Good stuff. Bad game wins are great for this team. Confidence is great and all, but humility and hard work is what this team is built on. Nothing like getting spooked by the Knicks to keep you from loafing at practice.

by Jumbo on Dec 2, 2008 7:50 PM PST reply actions

go easy, Blazers fans....

….the Blazers just did to the Knickerbockers what really good teams used to do to the Blazers when the Blazers were, ahem, crappy in Nate’s early years — let them hang around, and then remind them of who they are and (more importantly) of who WE are.

There are certainly lessons to be taken from this game, especially considering the number of nearly-uncontested layups scored by the Knicks.

However, I am impressed by the resolve shown by the Blazers (and, especially the reserves) in taking control of this game and reminding the Knicks of what they are, and what WE are.

Please let Dave's DVR work

Otherwise, this is what I saw:

Brandon had a tougher time than usual handling the ball tonight, evident in the turnovers (I think six, w/out checking). They were very effective in double teaming him. It looked like they were playing a box-and-one zone sometimes, with one player shadowing Roy from end to end. They sent a third person at him from the middle on screens, covered our marksmen on the wings and allowed a lot of space around the free throw line. When that space was filled by Greg or Joel, we stagnated. When Nic or LMA moved in there, we got good shots. All in all, NY’s defense was aggressive and smart.

We had a lot of trouble with the pick and roll. Our centers would challenge Duhon, but then recover slowly and there was no weakside rotation, as if LMA and Nic and Roy said “I’d rather give David Lee an easy layup than have to run back at a 3 by my man.” I actually have no idea what they were thinking. Early foul trouble seemed to make LMA tentative on defense (and maybe offense too, as though he were having flashbacks to the Golden State flopathon). He can be such a good help defender when he is aggressive.

I don’t remember seeing “Fast Breaks Points” listed as a stat, which is a good thing, because the only time they are listed are when we are getting wiped out in transition (Chicago being a recent exception). We got back on D, and might have given up a few offensive rebounds to do so, but I think it kept the pace more or less on our side. Unless “Sloppy” is a pace. Fortunately, it was mostly slow and sloppy rather than fast.

Some individual notes:
PG: when the Knicks applied pressure, we needed our points to get us into our offense faster or try breaking down the deffense more quickly on their own. Neither did so. They contributed, but not directing the offense. The defense was awful, until the dogging of Duhon by Sergio seemed to take a toll on Duhn. Viva Sergio.

Brandon seemed to play well in spurts but had as much trouble as anyone else decoding the Knicks’ defense. When they went to man coverage, he broke them down. But he had trouble identifying open people out of double teams. Rudy on offense was a quick spark, then a lot of poor shot selection, redeemed by a quarter of good shot selection. LMA had a similar graph, except that his nadir seemed to have more to do with foul trouble than getting shot happy. Some critical makes down the stretch for him. Nobody does as nice a job attacking a zone as Nic. Nobody on the Blazers busted the zone like Travis.

Joel had some nice late minutes, especially defensively, though both he and Greg had trouble with a) the pick and roll b) challenging people coming across the lane. Still, if NY ever considered posting someone up, they soon abandoned that strategy. I remember one post up by David Lee, resulting in an Oden block, and nothing more than a few iso’s for Wilson Chandler when the Blazers switched small onto him.

Greg’s missed dunks were unfortunate – but he started from under the basket. Rudy has to stop passing to Joel when Joel does not have a clear path to the bucket.

I forgot why I was typing
