Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Knicks

It's time to visit Phoen...uhhh...New York and get our run on.  Will the Blazers be able to control themselves or will we see Quick Shot Bob and the Chuckettes out there, leading to a Knicks victory?

I’m worried NY will sneak up on us. But it sounds like Nate and Brandon will have the team ready.

NY

They seem very unpredictable. Blazers have to control the tempo or it could become a round of wheel of fortune.

Not worried..

First Roy has to get the flu and have an awesome game before the Blazers slow down.

Care less about Power Rankings than about teams feeling like they are going to lose before they meet the Blazers. Always steady solid wins in your style against the weaker team. The slower the game is the happier I am. Not just a win, but an emotionless dismantling. Teams that can do this have always frustrated D’Antoni in the playoffs.

Trouble is...

…they keep comparing the Knicks to the Warriors. Ehhh. I expect they boys will be up for this one.

To be honest,

this game scares me more than any of the others. They just came off a big win, and they are speedy quick. I hope we will them to play our style. If it turns into a run and gun, this is a game that I think Sir-he-oh, and Rudy would excel in.

The second unit hasn't been as strong in recent games.

I’m predicting we’ll see a breakout game for a lot of the white unit tonight. I think we’ll see a lot from the Spanish Connection this evening. The Blazers may want a slow game, but the Knicks style is conducive to getting easy fast break opportunities which they will capitalize on. At least one, maybe two or three, Sergio to Rudy alley-oops tonight. Rudy should be able to find open space to keep his 3 point streak very much alive and well.

Channing Frye will be looking to make yet another statement on his old team also, and I forsee him getting close to a double-double. Add in another 4-4 FG, 7+ rebound performance for Ghostface P, and you have bench domination. Gotta like Portland’s chances in this one.

Yes! Yes! In the face!

A win against the Knicks and a strong showing by the Raptors to put us on top of the NW.

Hopefully...

the Blazers learned their lesson after that ugly loss to Golden State. We need to control the tempo on this one and not fall victim to D’antoni’s playground style of Ratball. I can’t wait to watch Greg and Joel violate David Lee all night in the paint.

Hollinger's Pace stat

1. New York 100.9
30. Portland 88.9

“Pace Factor is the number of possessions a team uses per game.”

Just throwing that out there.

I wonder who will win the pace battle

"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"

by Magnum on Dec 2, 2008 2:46 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I've been considering this

I’m not sure it matters. If the game plays at a faster pace with New York firing up bad shots (players shooting from bad spots on the floor for their game, contested shots, shots where the shooter is off balance or not set up, hurried shots, altered shots, etc.) and Portland is getting easy dunks early in the shot clock – it could be fast paced and high scoring without sacrificing our offensive efficiency and without allowing New York to really come close.

So it depends on how disciplined we are. We can’t let the pace dictate the shot selection. We can’t abandon the extra pass for the better shot. We can’t have guys thinking ‘scoring fest! I’m the man!" and just throwing crap at the backboard.

Knicks V Warriors

I think that it is a bit unfair to compare the Blazer team that lost to GSW to the one getting ready in MSG today. They have made such huge strides since then. I also think that McMillan and the crew understand how important this East coast swing is in terms of legitimizing this team as a true power to content with. I think that they will not have a letdown, nor will they be looking ahead to Boston and Toronto.
If Oden/Roy/LMA decide to own the low blocks, and the wings keep in the faces of the Knicks 3pt shooters, they will dominate. The Knicks have no hope with keeping up with Rip City on the boards, and with Oden/Pryz/Batum cleaning up the offensive glass, this will really stifle the Knicks fast break.
This game should be a blowout. David Lee has NO CHANCE of putting up the rebound numbers that the Knicks will need, and they have ZERO chance of stopping our offensive weapons.
I also think that even if the Knicks were loaded with talent (they aren’t), an eight-man squad, even if they are used to running, can not keep up with the talent and depth of Portlands first and second units.

He knows we have obviously struggled against small, fast, and feisty teams. The players know it too. We will see a specific game plan tonight to try to control the pace i reckon.

by dario argento on Dec 2, 2008 3:10 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

THAT is the key my friend.

If Portland is up for the game, we win. If they just “show up” and expect a win, it could get really ugly. Keep the bigs out of foul trouble.

although they have an impressive offense and an ok record they loose to every good team they play, their one quality win is against utah who has been banged up all year. Otherwise their wins come against the likes of miami, washington, memphis and okc

Because the only way he'll

learn the sets is by practicing with the team. It’s not a lack of talent or skill so much as a being a rookie on a team that doesn’t absolutely need him to run the offense (miami, chicago, oklahoma)

Here’s a lesson for the league. If you and Portland trade shutting down your key guys, the rest of Portland’s players will probably beat the rest of your players. - Dave

I hope I am wrong but.....

History is littered with the bodies of undersized shooting guards that are converted to pg in hopes that they are the next Oscar Robertson. I would love to see Bayless evolve into a Kevin Johnson style pg with mad penetration skills, but I remember what can’t miss prospects Damon Stoudamire, Erick Barkley, and Sebastian Telfair were….. Now if Blake or Rodriguez are moved, then I will become a true believer, because I am convinced Kevin Pritchard is the reincarnation of Nostradamus, and knows that Bayless is destined for the HOF….

Yeah, and they will at some point.

But let’s realize that he is 20 years old. Right now he is working on developing, and taking his lumps. Maybe the best thing in the end is for his ego to take a hit. That would inspire a lot of work by him this offseason.

There is a reason KP wanted him. I believe that. Bayless has the potential to be terrific. This year is a humbling process that we will be glad for in five years.

KP doesn’t pick players for no reason. Look at Freeland today. 20 points, 9-11 shooting, couple of assists. Sergio is developing nicely. Rudy is terrific. Lamarcus and Brandon. Jerryd will be very good… He’ll get his shot soon enough.

by hibachi on Dec 2, 2008 3:46 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

bayless is fine. nate’s handling the rotation as a meritocracy extremely well. bayless is the 11th best player on the team and he is being played accordingly. the blazers value him — i have seen JB talk to both monty and nate for extended times after practices and he talked to KP for a very extended time prior to one of the home games last week. they love his game. but they also love the 10 guys above him. if/when there’s a trade, he will be ready. until then, he wears ridiculously nice suits and goes really, really hard in practice and puts in a ton of work after hours.

hope that helps.

gotcha

do you think d-league would be an option for him just to get some playing time in the meantime?

by hotstuffdb22 on Dec 2, 2008 3:55 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i would not do that but i guess it could happen.

id rather have him be with the team as the worst player than be in the d league as the best player. if you want to improve his passing and defense, the d league is not the best place for that. mainly i want him around our nba coaching staff. if we had our own coaches down in the d league that might change things. but i want him learning the game from nate/monty, memorizing all of our sets, so that he’s ready to step in when called upon. his time will come.

also if there is a trade for consolidation his role could change. keep him ready.

in either case, he has nba skills right now. he should stick with the big club.

Exactly.

If he starts drawing FTs, he’ll add four or five points to his scoring average. He is athletic and has a good enough handle to get by people… just needs to work on how to get by the stronger NBA defenders.

Tone's report on Marbury

From Mike D’Antoni’s mouth; Marbury turned down the starting PG spot and a 30 minute of PT a game.

by BlueBooYay on Dec 2, 2008 3:54 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow.

How could a guy not want to play in that offense? No defense required. Marbury would put up 30 points and 8 assists easily. If a lower level free agent pickup like Duhon puts up good numbers, Marbury definitely could.
