Why other teams Shoot Free throws so well against us.
One would think what can we really do about that. But there is a a true cause and effect. The reason is
The reason is really quite simple and I have to blame it on the 95 pound starlits who hand out those crazy things behind the basket.
Thunder Sticks I think they call them.
Every team has them, every team has 95 pound leggy girls handing them out. Players come to expect both girls in short dresses and those silly thunder sticks. Something tells me ballers practice free throws with lovely ladies and thunder sticks in the back ground. I certanly learned to shoot foul shots like this.
Blazers management needs to keep the other teams guessing. How about japanese fans or hula hoops and instead of cheer leaders in short dresses lets throw some sun dresses at them or rain coats. keep them guessing.
And don't get me started on playing "Who Are You" during opposing player introductions.

Wow
I think it would be interesting to systematically check which teams have opponents shoot the highest free-throw percentage again.
Questions: Are some buildings more conducive to free-throw shooting over the years? I suspect that rims are a common tightness around the league, and replaced regularly. What else could cause a difference?
Is there a difference in how likely a free throw is to go in if it’s a 3pt play, 4pt play, or if the shooter is shooting 1, 2 (or 3) free throws? I suspect shooting three free throws has the highest percentage, as it’s almost always only outside shooters shooting those free throws, then 1-shot attempts (either a guy selected for a technical shot, or the end of an “and-1” situation, likely to be an offensive player and more likely to have some star clout), then 2-shot attempts (everything else).
- Do some teams give a lot of +1’s? Alot of fouling jump shooters?

They had a test about that on some discovery channels sports lab show
Noise was found to be much more effective than motion. And highly irregular motion like waves was better than all that back and forth with the sticks, which just creates a fuzzy but not very irregular background for the shooter.

Found it. It was called "Sports Science", a little bit Mythbusters-style and probably not very representative, but fun

They also had something about Jason Kapono trying to catch and shoot as fast as possible.

Watched it again, not very scientific
But the premise that audio distractions and irregular motions are more distracting have been found true in several tests.

BTW, what is Bayless' vertical?

I've always thought
They should split the end section down the middle, and give sticks to just the people on one side. That would create a visual imbalance where the left side of your vision is full of motion and the right side is relatively still. Same thing for your ears, you’d ear a lot more with your left ear. Seems like that would be a lot more disorienting than having it balanced.

I like your japanese fan idea...
then, if everyone fanned them at the same time toward the shooter, he’d be dealing with a draft that would not only mess with his eyes, but also mess up the trajectory of the shot.
Let’s do that one.

Get started.
Playing ‘Who Are You?’ during the visiting team’s introductions would be great.
this has been a message from: "The People's Alliance to give Greg Oden at least a couple of seasons."

Theory...
I was wondering if anyone did a breakdown to see who we’re fouling on each team? Are the Blazers letting opposing guards getting a lot of foul shots via penetration? Do we foul too much on the perimeter?

It would be awesome if we could
coordinate the entire arena to be as loud as possible then everybody be silent at the same time.

I bet it has to do with WHO we're fouling
Without doing any research at all, my guess is the Blazers are fouling a lot of slashes on their way to the basket. All our guys are all pretty big, and sometimes those pesky little guards can get around them leading fouls from the beaten defender, or from Oden being in their general vicinity.

knowing who not to foul shows experience
i’m sure a certain percentage is just luck, but making smart fouls instead of desperate, late, shooting fouls could help the blazers in this category. unfortunately, two of our starters are rookies and are learning about players and player tendencies largely on the job.

Rhythm...andn Body Surfing
We definitely should NOT chant “defense, defense…” in rhythm because it doesn’t bother anyone when anything is a consistent tone…we should designate someone to body surf while the other team shoots a free throw…there will be no rhyme or rhythm but definitely a distraction.
by broyposse on Dec 2, 2008 2:53 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Everyone on one side of the arena should blow just as the opposing player is shooting his free throw
He would have no idea how his shot missed a foot to the left

I don't think that would move enough air - but I have seen some industrial fans that would knock the entire basket and stantion down!

I think it makes them concentrate better.
I know that I used to shoot very well on the playground when you “shoot for teams”. I’d have guys yelling in my ear, pulling my shirt, shaking the standard. They’d do it to everyone.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

Ha we should
Attach a flat screen behind the back board, and show them a movie of how they miss the free throws, when they are at the line.
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

"Thundersticks" are the dumbest idea EVER!
I’m always commenting when I see those things waving behind the backboard that they make shooting EASIER. Look at the hoop when the thundersticks are in motion: it’s wonderfully highlighted against all that white motion behind. A shooter couldn’t ASK for a more perfect shooting background. What a remarkably dumb idea!!
Now, if the fans would WAIT so that their sound & motion began just as the shooter was about to release his shot, that’d be different. But no: that would be too intelligent.
Incidentally, the same principle applies in golf. You know how golfers get all upset if someone moves or makes any sound while they’re putting? That’s because that motion or sound usually comes suddenly & unexpectedly—breaking the complete stillness & silence—just as they’re starting their putting motion. This is startling and EXTREMELY distracting. By contrast, if the sound or motion were constant, it would hardly bother the putter at all.
