Improvement in all Fields (w/ Poll)
The stats of our last four years---
The blazers starting out 12-6 have proven themselves a major competitor in the playoffs and future champions. At the rate the team has improved I wouldn't be surprised if next season we got to the finals. We have improved in almost all fields from the 05-06 season. The changes have been dramatic to go three years and go from the bottom to the top.
The biggest change that is a combination of the improvements our team has had is points per game:

The reason for our one less shot per game is mainly because we are putting away games and do not need to take shots near the end of games.
As you can see the team has improved in many fields. As a team the Blazers have improved 11.1% from the 05'-06' season with all of these stats averaged.
And yes I say next year for the championship (I am an optimist)

Definitely next year
so many players will retire or become ineffective that the youth will shine next year. I cant wait

Really I dont know about next year
And there will not be a lot of changes with veterans. I dont think anyone effective this year will retire next year.

People!
The Blazers have proven themselves to be a major competitor in the playoffs? And how exactly do you figure that?
Must be the way we torched LA, Phoenix and Utah. Or perhaps our shellacking of Houston and San Antonio.
Silly hyper Blazer fans.

That was early in the season….i guess road wins against the Magic and Piston (who destroyed the Spurs today), and a Hornets torching doesn’t count in your books either…

Umm, as I recall, we are in the Western Conference. Which means we have to play Western Conference teams in the playoffs. See list from my comment above. We start beating those teams on the road and we have some reason to think we MIGHT be competitive come postseason. The only way to prove that we are a “major competitor in the playoffs” is in the playoffs.

I doubt anyone
is thinking we’ll be a pushover in the first round this year.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

I see Blazin's point
Only 22% of the season is behind us and people are already talking about making a lot of noise in the playoffs. It’s like stopping in the middle of foreplay and projecting how many orgasms your partner will have by the time you have breakfast.

Look at how our season started though.
Massive road trips with little home games. From who we played and where we played them I think we are doing extraordinarily well.

I'm not saying the Blazers aren't playing well
I was just saying that 18 games into the season doesn’t have much bearing on the playoffs. If the Blazers match up with the Lakers in the first round, then probably all hope is lost. I just seems like counting the chicken’s before they hatch.
by tominhawaii on Dec 3, 2008 7:27 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
No question
we are doing well. And I am psyched…
but if we’re talking playoffs, that’s a different story. It’s Tim Duncan’s story and Jerry Sloan’s story and, yes, Phil Jackson’s story.
Do you see why playing well 20 games in to the season doesn’t quite stack up against that history?
We have to earn the right to be in that conversation.

Dont you think that our youth has proven to
go against the status quo because last year we were the third youngest team in NBA history (not counting Reif we would have been 2) and we easily got more wins than the first and second youngest combined. We also started last year at 5-13 we are now 14-6. I see good things in the future. Every player may not be at the level of a veteran but the combination of our guys skill levels (bench too) can beat almost everyteam (excluding l*akers in a 7 game series and Boston because they are just that good).
by PORTLAND on Dec 3, 2008 7:05 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The matter of fact is that
We have never been blown out by any road game in the west…… besides the fluky first game….. and we had a shot at winning in New Orleans, I thought we had the win in Phoenix the first time and GS as well as Utah. We may have lost but with out success lately there will be opportunity to win in the west.

Yes we are playing some really good basketball this season,
but remember the playoffs are a different animal entirely. Almost a completely different season. Lose focus for 2 minutes and it can be the end of your run. That’s why veteran teams succeed more. I’m hopeful we can win a series or maybe even more, but we have absolutely NO idea how this team is going to perform yet.

Things that aren't here that help tell the story
Turnovers.
Opponent turnovers.
Opponent rebounds.
Opponent shooting percentages.

differential are probably more telling
by appel82 on Dec 3, 2008 7:33 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think we had a slight negative point differential last year…even when we were at the mid season apex of hopefullness.
This year something like +12.
Where can we get some 4th quarter stats, like point differential in the 4th? That would probably be a telling stat. How many wins did we have last year where we were the Knicks of last night, building a lead through 3 quarters and then just barely surviving a 4th quarter comeback by the other guys?
The cowards never started
The weak died along the way
Only the strong survived
They were the Trailblazers

I actually talked about
all of those things rebounds and opponents rebounds, turnover by opponents compared to us, and the shooting percentage of other teams in an earlier post. I think it’s called … I’ll get back to you on that.
by MJCBMP on Dec 3, 2008 3:01 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It was called
Where the blazers stand 8 games in and it talked about all 8 games and performances on all of those playoff teams.
by MJCBMP on Dec 3, 2008 6:27 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Good stuff
If a little out of date now.
The thing that triggered my comment is that in this fan post, you show the Blazers as +2.8 on rebounds, but the rebound margin improvement is much, much better than that, because of the reduction in opponent rebounds.
Do you like asparagus?

Ya I just
hate repeating info I mentioned earlier but later I can make another post that shows every single stat there is. It will be after the long home stand.

Thanks for the work on it, anyway. It’s useful stuff as is.

wow the 05-06 season was ugly, wasn't it?? (I don't know too much about the blazers of the past) xD
by Kartemax on Dec 3, 2008 5:43 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
It was a low point in team history
It wasn’t their worst record ever, but very close. The management had systematically tore down the team, and hadn’t replaced them with good veterans, nor with rookies who could have immediate impact.
We were left with a shell of a team.
Our GM traded down and chose Martell Webster in the draft prior to that year. Our assistant GM had been yelling “Take Chris Paul! Take Chris Paul!!”. We traded and took Martell anyway, who (no offense meant to him) won’t make anyone forget Chris Paul.
Not long afterward, our GM was fired, and that assistant, KP, was promoted. Many saavy moves and a little luck, and here we are now.
by Timmay! on Dec 3, 2008 9:00 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I remember that
I was still watching ever game and I just remember when we got Roy that next year I thought (and yes I actually thought this) B would make a perfect trade with a good player with a few years under his belt. I now resent anyone who speaks of trading B and hope KP will forgive me for that thought,

You need an "all of the above" option on that poll.

Three point percent
Its nice to see it on the rise do you have a stat on how many tre’s we reactually jacking up?
Is it the three point shot that will take this team to the finals or post play, live by the jumper die by the jumper, that stat is way to fluid. Pryz is shooting 85% from the field right now take that out and does not are fg% drop quite a bit?
Just questions not trying to be negative, but we are a perimeter team in flux.
by Dragonage on Dec 3, 2008 9:06 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
We make an average of
8.8 3’s a game and shoot an average of 22 3’s a game. The percent went down after last night
