I Was Wrong
I admit it; I was wrong.
The other day, I started to write a fanpost about Brandon Roy. And I planned on saying some very nice things about Brandon. I planned to talk about his game--how clutch he is. How he is the leader of this team. About the way he's brought Rip City back to Portland.
Then I faltered.
I faltered to the point that I actually wrote the words, "Brandon may be the heart of this team, but he isn't the soul." You can argue all you want about whether Brandon is "elite" in this league or not, but what I said went beyond that. I made the mistake of saying that while Brandon is the main focus of this team, he isn't enough of a leader to take this team to the promise land. He doesn't have the guts to put a team on his back and score 40 points and lead a team to a win when he has to. He's the heart that can keep us beating--maybe even get us into the playoffs, but he's not the soul. He doesn't have that killer set of mind, will, and emotions to get us over the top.
Can you say, "unrec?"
I decided to axe my fanpost idea--something just didn't feel right; that was about two weeks ago. Since then, Brandon has dropped a lot of points. But that doesn't matter. At least, it's not as important as the other characteristic that I've failed to see for so long, one that even the most casual observer of this team should be able to recognize.
Brandon Roy is the heart AND soul of this team. Tonight's game against Phoenix was just one demonstration of that. He simply refused to lose. Terry Porter tried various schemes, Amare came up with some big buckets down the stretch...heck...the Suns shot 57% from the field! They beat us from the field, they beat us from the line, they beat us with the three ball, they had more assists than us.
Every one of those stats was made irrelevant by Brandon Roy. He decided the monkey of losing 9 straight times to the Suns in his career was coming off his back--tonight. He decided, and it was so. Very few players can do that.
Players that have earned the trust of their teammates. Players who have put blood, sweat, and tears into each and every game.
Players that are the heart AND soul of their team.
I've never been so happy to be so wrong.

What's the difference between heart and soul?
The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.
Kings fan
The heart is what keeps the blood flowing--keeps the organism alive.
The soul is the mind, will and emotions of the being.
I made the mistake of judging Brandon to be simply the heart—he keeps the franchise alive and beating.
Brandon is much more than that.
He is the mind, will, and emotion of this team. He is what defines it. Yes, there are other parts of the body that contribute to the being, but Brandon is the heart and soul.

"OK ninos, here is what you do when you make a 3pter: see look, you touch the tip of your thumb to the tip of your index finger, making a circle, like so. Then you extend your other 3 fingers and extend one or both of your arms into the air to make sure the scorers see you scored tres puntas, no dos puntas. Ninos!! Atención aqui!! Then you run down the court blowing kisses to all the ladies in the crowd as they bask in the glow of your 3 pt shot.

So Prez, do you just come up with these odd thoughts to fill your time and space?
I could of have told you Brandon was capable of scoring 40 points. I could not in a million seconds imagine he would score 52, in a win! Can you imagine what the pundits would say if he scored that many, and we had lost! Oh I can just see Prez’s article now.
“Brandon Roy is being to selfish”. But, didn’t Kobe score 82 in a loss?
He did what he had to do, and then some. That’s why Brandon’s my vote, not just for All-Star or MVP.
When it’s all said and done. Brandon WILL BE Mr. Blazer.
He will have Rings. And not just from the worms Dave gave me. Like Gold rings. More then one of them.

Greatest Blazer ever? That's a tall order.
But it’s one I’m now confident that Roy can do. Not because we won the game—heck, we could have had some bad breaks. But because he showed that this team is in his blood.
This picture from the fanshots pretty much says it all. B-Roy was crushed when we lost to Orlando. He’s H&S, baby.

I rember that game, I felt the same way
KP had to come over to me and put a hand on my shoulder just to get my to snap out of it.
Let me elaborate on my point.
Yes, Brandon is young. Yes, IF his body holds up over the course of his long illustrious career my points could come true. It’s not going to be easy. But this kid’s a worker. And he’s smart. He plays alot of minutes, but maybe he thinks he will make the run at the title in this next 3-5 years not the 10+ we all think he will need or have his leisure to do. Maybe he thinks it can be this year. I do.
I mean, maybe I wouldn’t bet my poodle on it, but I might. (p.s. I have cats)

Recommended Andy.
….. and to add to your advice, Dave, you or anyone else don’t need those chemical sweeteners in the diet drinks. Those are long term poisons. Of course no one needs the liquid candy in the regular soft drinks either. My advice? Drink beer -— or be on the look out for soft drinks that are soon to come out (finally) that use the natural sweetener Stevia. There is actually already one on the market called Zevia but it can be a little hard to find at this point. The big cola companies are working on a similar product.
Nope, not Coke Zero Norsktroll
It has Aspartame (Nutrasweet) as it’s main sweetener. Aspartame should never have been approved by the FDA. In fact it wasn’t, It was voted down. So they somehow were able to add another voter to the panel (with connections to the soft drink industry) and forced it through. Tragic.
I don’t think Coke or Pepsi has their stevia product on the market yet. But I read the other day it is getting close. The problem to this point has been that the FDA won’t allow stevia to be classified as a sweetener (to protect the big money in the soft-drink industry) although it has been used as a sweetener overseas for decades. Zevia got around this asinine restriction by labeling stevia as a “dietary supplement”. Then Zivia put a little box on their cans that says “A dietary supplement is not perminted to disclose the amount of calories when there is ZERO . For that reason ZERO does not disclose them”. Kind of clever. I imagine that sweetener restriction regarding stevia will be removed when these big companies become involved.
Stevia, a Seattle company www.zevia.com can be ordered directly, but I’d guess it would be more than a little spendy shipping it to Scananavia. BTW, in my opinion their Orange and Lime flavors are the best -- not so much their cola and root beer, at least to my taste buds.
Brandon Roy just destroyed everything in his path. There's your rational analysis -- Dave

right...
because beer is healthy and everything.
Also, be on the lookout for the new sweetener, BRoy7ia. It makes everything better, but it only has calories (and that energy kick) when you really need it — otherwise, it just sits back and lets the other food in your tummy get all the attention.

the nba season
is a marathon, not a sprint. Brandon has already been labeled as injury prone, and he recently had fluid drained from his knees (i believe its from inflammation from overuse). i just hope that brandon’s body can hold up well thru all of this. a lot of people say he is not “athletic” enough, and i’m not sure if he is conditioned well enough to handle all of this like AI can.

prone?
I know he takes a beating and needs rest, ….but I’ve yet to read a respectable outline of any one of our players being injury “prone”.
canby was injury prone…. Tmac is injury prone…. some players get a scrape, and run to mommy for a band aid…..
most of our team ( setting aside the part that hasn’t shown their grit yet, cough RUDY cough)…..is not injury prone….they’re OG’s in their own right who won’t let a sprained pinky…or some fluid in the knee….or…stiff shoulders…etc…they don’t use their injuries as excuses…..a trait that I think hounds injury “prone” players……our players rule.
(sorry if that sounds like a nasty tone, I’m just irritated with the whole “prone” part.) :)
The Faith don't panic, the faith freaks out burns out farms and torchs small villages in the name of The Faith.
Lots of minutes, like in the Kings game?
The Marathon analogy is bad. A marathon’s done at once with no breaks. It isn’t bursts of athletic ability, but a grueling endurance trial. While the season’s long, there’re plenty of oppurtunities to rest. Most of the fatigue is associated with travelling and not getting relaxation time. That’s an easy thing to become accustomed to. 2nd year players should be able to handle it well.
Inflamation in the knee isn’t a big deal. As long as that’s all it is, there’s no serious injury risk. I’ve had fluid drained, taken cotizone shots. It’s not biggie.
I'm a really really ridiculously good looking orange mocha frappaccino drinking manhammer sandwich
he can keep that finger split on all season, far as I'm concerned
and let’s drain his knee EVERY night.

Yeh that is a very realistic concern....
our next game isn’t till monday, so that should give him some time to recover though.
Hopefully he doesn’t have to have any more knee drainage….ughh. Gives me unpleasant images of Gilzo.

A little bit, but he is really smart with his body
More so than Dwayne Wade. When the team is up nicely, you don’t see Brandon throwing himself around and crashing to the floor (at least not a lot). He only does that when he is needed. He also respects that a layup or a jumper are worth just as many points as a thundering dunk and free throws or AND1 is also not bad. Just in that game on one fast break (outlet pass Blake) he switched to the left hand for a layup and allowed Barnes to catch up to him who prevented it with a foul. If Brandon had wanted he might have been able to dunk it, but he would have risked really crashing into Barnes and falling from up high. The guy plays very smart to safe his body, which he knows is not the most robust.
Henry wrote something about this today
basically saying the same thing. You guys think alike. +1 for you

I thought (on the Barnes foul) it looked like Brandon was trying to dunk it but Barnes honestly fouled him hard enough to prevent it. If you look he loses his handle on the ball as he tries to extend toward the hoop. Either way, he’s becoming a and-one threat every time he touches the ball which is such an important weapon. Given the choice between he and Wade, I’m choosing Roy. He’s smarter and I gotta say that I really like where his game is headed. I think we’ve just seen the start of him REALLY coming on.
I left my wallet in El Segundo.
hmmmRoy or wade
I happen to think that Wade is tied with lebron, and kobe for best player in the league. To put Roy up that high… hmmm. I hesitate to do that, and then I ask, what is this team without Roy? Then I hesitate to not do that.
Greg Oden, where posters happen.
Agree to disagree...
I don’t put Wade up with Kobe or LeBron—I think those two operate on another level as far as their consistency, durability and overall ability to create and put their teams on their backs.
Wade I see in the same class as Roy without a doubt. I think where Roy separates himself is his ability to play team ball and not always need the ball to make his team’s offense “go”… I think Roy’s D is also better.
But it’s a matter of opinion… and the fact that I’m a major homer.
I left my wallet in El Segundo.
Both are similar
in that they put their bodies on the line and they play with a ton of heart. I don’t think Roy is currently on the same tier as Kobe, LeBron, and Wade. He could get there tho, but Kobe has been in the league for awhile now and has only won an MVP award once. I don’t think you can seriously put Roy down as a top tier MVP candidate now…maybe a few years from now when we make deep runs tho.

Also it should be noted
what phenomenal parts each of the other players bring to this team. You need all the parts to make this thing work. B-Roy is simply the heart and soul. Jerryd might be the face. LMA might be the torso….Rudy might be the lips….etc.
Everyone plays a part….and that was evident tonight. ‘Specially blake. somethin’ like 22 and 10 assists with no TO’s? Gotta’ love that.

He's a winner.
I saw it at when he was at UW. I saw it his rookie season when the team turned to him instead of Z-Bo. And now I see it every time I go to the Rose Garden. Whether it’s 10-5-5 or 52-5-6, the only way he plays is to help his team win the game.
And his game is refined beauty in an age of flashy plastic surgery. One for all to admire. Cool and fiery, relaxed and intense, passive and aggressive, teammate and star.
He is the perfect leader for this team, one who works tirelessly to improve, encourages others to do the same, but never throws people under the bus. He just says what needs to happen, and leads the charge.
I admire him for being humble. I respect him for putting other first. I cheer him when he defers or takes over… but I would fear him for every second if he was against me because that would be one huge mountain to climb for me to win.

The cliche is that it takes a big man to admit when he is wrong. So admit it, you’re a big, wrong man. (Just kidding) Even with your admissions it wasn’t like you were jumping off the Brandon Bandwagon, at worst you were just dangling your feet. It’s all about growth and healing here tonight. So prezofdeath can admit to raising his personal ceiling concerning the talents of Brandon Roy. Now all we have to do is get Jason Quick and Greg Oden together and balance will have been restored to The Blazer force.

Being wrong on both counts has made me a very, very happy person. Hell, I can’t even remember who I thought we should’ve drafted. Either way, that draft showed why KP has his job and why I don’t have KP’s job.

but I was grinning when I saw Bayless lose his mind for Brandon. He was jumping up and down on the bench and sprinted to give him a flying body bump after PHX called a timeout to slow momentum. Kid didnt get 1 second of PT last night, but he sure rooted them on. I love that. From being a lottery pick to the end of the bench is tough on him I am sure, but he was more stoked for Brandon than anyone else out there and I smiled.

I liked Bayless' emotion as well.
He’s worried me, especially these murmurs about him wanting a trade and being unhappy about his PT from ESPN types. I don’t really see his potential clearly right now but I gotta say, if KP likes the kid we need to make him fit. He’ll grow into a player that will make me say, “Sorry KP, I see the light now, you were right again.”
Even that renob Shavlik seems to be having a good time and all he’s been doing is dressing like a substitute teacher for each game. This is a good group and I really think they are learning to play for each other. That usually only happens in college. And people say our youth isn’t a strength… pffffft.
I left my wallet in El Segundo.
I think Nate wants Bayless to be successful and he didn't think he was quite ready.
I see his role as big time point guard distributer and scorer. I think he is ready just now. I think he will start picking up minutes.
I could be wrong now. But I don't think so!
When was it that Bayless had a bounce pass to Prz in the post?

Brandon wants to win more than any other player out there with very few exceptions
That’s step 1
Blazer Fan
The thing is that
Brandon doesn’t use athleticism in his game much. As he loses speed and jumping ability in his thirties, I don’t think his game will diminish the same way that Amar’e, Wade, and Howard will see their games dwindle. Brandon’s game isn’t based off of athleticism. It’s founded on skill, which he will gain more of as the years progress.
