I found the real Steve Blake you guys!

ITS HIM!!

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

Is Ike permanent over Channing...I hope so...

even though Ben punked on Ike…i enjoyed his banging, rebounding, and flat out hustle down low.

Nothing is permanent

Frye has responded positively to being benched before; and Diogu has yet to demonstrate that he deserves major NBA minutes.

But still, it’s good to have an extra body on the bench to keep people from getting too comfy

Ike is great

we’ve already got plenty of guys who can score. It’s nice to have a player like Ike who can bring something other than scoring.

by blazermaniac32 on Dec 18, 2008 11:14 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Right

The thing is, Trout was effective at the right times. His shots were important, and we’ve already learned to our sadness that in true team basketball if the man, in this case Brandon, scores many many points, but everybody else is subpar, winning is harder than necessary. In this case, however, Brandon was so good he was scary, and the other players did what they had to do.

Depends on how you look at it...

Outlaw scored quite a bit Travis single-handedly gave the lead the Blazers built towards the end away.

He had 6 plays in rowe he blew. BRoy has to hit that 3 in the end to seal the deal. What if BRoy misses that shot?

Travis would have been nuked had it gone differently.

"Both Anthony Carter and Jameer Nelson were downright jubilant in the Magic locker room postgame. Carter said to no one in particular, "Brandon Roy, that man is unstoppable, it's like he's playing NBA Live" and Nelson was cracking on his teammates for not being able to guard Brandon. The kinds of jokes you can make when you win."

by loyal_blazer on Dec 18, 2008 11:18 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Other than Roy

Travis is really the only Blazer who can consistently get his own shot. That was huge tonight. It took some of the pressure off Roy, offensively. Plus, that tip in to end the third and the offensive rebound at the end were both extremely clutch. I hope the vast legion of Travis haters here at least tip their hat to the man for this one game, at least,

by knickfan on Dec 18, 2008 11:22 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he had a great rebound, so to speak, at the end of the game

that was a game winning play. If outlaw doesn’t take the ball from Richardson (?) and get us another possession the Suns don’t have to foul and with the way they’d be shooting the 3……let’s just say we didn’t need yet another game to be decided by a last second 3 pointer.

Nate must not be a good coach

They obviously don’t know how to play a fastbreak game. Fastbreak teams always get more turnovers than that.

It certainly was funny when the TNT announcers talked about that

Suns – super high percentage, super high threes percentage, a couple of other amazing stats…

Down 5.

It’s what I like to see from the Blazers when defense is the black sheep cousin nobody talks about. Try more shots and rebound when you don’t make the shots. They’ve been good at that this year.

Offensively yes

Still a long way to go defensively. When your opponents shoot 57% from the field and 67% from three point land, it tells me we have a long ways to go. BUT the goal is to outscore your opponent and we did!

We've had a few good defensive games, too

We’re finding ways to win, which is the big thing. Good teams do that. And we’re doing it against good teams as well.

Phoenix is in the discussion for the 8-9 battle, at least right now. If they get chemistry with Richardson, they could move out of it. But we just inflicted a loss on one of the teams we may need to beat out for the playoff spot. That’s very, very good.

just got home

from the game, it was one of the greatest games I’ve seen in recent history. The houston game had a more exciting ending perhaps, but the history with the suns and the 52 and the national broadcast made this game very very sweet. The crowd was fantastic. Spontaneous chants breaking out, wild up and down game, the guy dancing with his shirt off was so funny, I don’t know how much they showed, but about 6 guys took off their shirts in the group on the screen and were dancing so funny, everybody was laughing so hard. The 52 was quiet, but it looked like he took a beating for it. And finally Travis has a great game, his shots were important, he lost Barns for a few threes, but made up for it with shooting and some great timely rebounds. Wow!

He and Outlaw covered for the Blazers offense. It turned into a complete isolation game plan. I suppose if it works, keep it going, but the Suns literally stopped the Blazers half court pick and roll offense. I hope it won’t be a reoccurring theme. Again, loved Roy.

Nate finally decided to double in the second half. For all the crap I give him, I commend him for not playing a lick of zone and doubling up on the post after halftime.

Agree...the double-team was well executed...

Instead of a passive double team, the covered the ball handler and didn’t allow an entry pass…GO with a huge steal on Barnes at the end. Even though Shaq was wide open, it was impossible to pass it to him with two guys in you face.

The last 2 minutes

That’s what made this game a W.

That’s the difference between Roy’s a genius and Roy’s a Kobe wannabe.

Everything turned out well, and these have been my favorite last 2 minutes of a game by Roy from this season, but the team still made some of the mistakes that made us lose some games already this season.

Roy’s last three was the best shot he’s taken in crunch time in the whole season, the team was moving the ball and Roy was open to take it, great! That’s the way it should be and that’s what wins tight games in the long run, that play has to be a standard in the playoffs.

I don’t want to spoil anybody’s fun, but we couldn’t inbound the ball with a few seconds left and spent our last timeout because of that, deja vù? That could have cost us the game. LaMarcus had a lucky shot and Phx missed to easy baskets.

I know we won anyway, but this won’t work in the long run.

Roy was amazing tonight, his best game ever. Defense and coach decisions not so much. We should have fouled in the last posession, phx missed the chance of fouling LMA and getting a worse FT shooter taking the FTs and a couple extra seconds, we should have played our best FT shooters, we just got a little lucky there.

There’s still a long way until we become a playoff winning team, we can’t rely on luck if our goal is winning championships.

Don’t hate me, I just want to be realistic.

Coaching wasn't too bad

Our offense was fluid. But we definitely cannot play defense like that if we expect to make some noise in the playoffs. Defend the friggin’ three-point line!

by Eventine on Dec 18, 2008 11:36 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not hatin'

But ‘Phx missed easy baskets’ is ridiculous. The Suns shot an absurd percentage all game. Granted, a lot of their 3balls were in-rhythm, minimally-defensed shots, but still, even under those circumstances they shot incredibly high. At one point the announcer said (paraphrasing): “I can’t believe the Suns are shooting 70% from 3, 60% overall, 80% from the line…and are losing by 5!”

The Suns missing a couple makeable shots just means that their percentage inched imperceptibly toward the mean.

by samuelleejackson on Dec 18, 2008 11:37 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A typo in that comment

When I said “to easy baskets” I meant “two easy baskets”, speaking of the last minute, where LMA’s lucky shot combined with those 2 missed open shots made us won the game.

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

I don't know if this has been said...

But this was the best win of the seson, imo.

Beating the Rockettes was great, but that was a great, one-in-twenty (lucky) shot.
This win was solid performance against a team that posted phenomenal numbers, shot great, and executed their offense (how often do you see a team go 56-66-86% and only be -3 on rebounds and still lose??!).
Great win for the BLazers; way to impose your will and REFUSE to lose!!

Turnovers

were a huge difference maker, big win anyway, but I’d say late game offensive execution, phx defensive passivity and a bit of luck is what won us this game

an interesting coaching move by Nate...

… that worked out was switching every pick and roll that involved LaMarcus. This sounds strange, but LMA is better guarding Nash on the perimeter than he is guarding Amare in the post. Also, Blake did a great job fronting the post and then there was good help D by Oden/Joel. LMA is a terrible post defender, so its smart to switch the pick and roll.

same thoughts here, LMA did a GREAT job as a perimeter defender. He is a great 2nd layer of defense to contain penetration and contest shots before they get into Greg’s territory.

I like using LMA to shade the dominant ball handler, seems to be very successful so far.

if thats what Charles was referring too. He gives us muscle on Shaq and so tough reb’s (in a game the Blazer’s only got 35).

And due to this game, I am making little to no progress in getting it done.

Worth it.

Ungrateful suns fans

The recap over at Bright Side, here, is rather uncharitable, I thought. Judging from the summary, you’d think we were the Oklahoma City thunder stealing one from the Suns.

Though as Arby points out, someone called Hockey has been flaming away over there…

The blind squirrel reference was pretty funny

I also think that the whole law of averages thing is ridiculous

If they want their blog to be taken seriously they shouldn’t post so hastily after tough losses. The analysis later on in the article wasn’t bad but whoever wrote that should have taken some time to reflect and not let emotions from a close game affect his or her post.

In fact I find their recap quite accurate

After the game I had this feeling that actually the Suns lost the game, not that the Blazers won it

the suns didnt choke at the end

Roy hit a clutch 3 with a minute left and the blazers led by 5 at the start of the 4th, the game was back and forth it just came down to who would hit the big shot at the end and Roy came through big time

That's some spread-out rebounding tonight

I think Oden would have dominated rebounding if not for the fouls.

Oden looked ready to take Shaq down until the whistles rained down.

I watch Oden's rebounds to keep a tally in my head

and part of the reason he got very few tonight was because when he was in the game the ball was going down or bounced long off the rim. He had great position, just not many rebounds to be had while he was playing.

All those wanting to trade Outlaw .....

who should we ask for in return? Duane Wade maybe?

I hope this quiet’s y’all down at least until Monday’s game against Denver.

Has anyone given any credit to Blake yet? Well I am. He kept us in the game for a long stretch in the first half.

Oh Brandon! If he has his shot going at all, he is simply unstoppable. Don’t look know, but we have a bonafide super-star playing on our team.

An ultra-exciting game!!

I thought the same thing about Travis

but I don’t like the way he makes me feel like a guy who will win or lose a game for you every other play? He had an amazing impact on the game, but he looked lost on a couple of key possessions down the stretch that still scared me. I always like Travis, but his consistency and attention to the details of the mechanics of plays will continue to worry me.

I don't think this game changes the Trout trade argument

He is capable of great games. We know that. But you never know what you’re going to get… amazing plays or boneheaded ones. Tonight was more of the amazing variety, but a little boneheaded mixed in.

I know we need a spark out of our 2nd unit and Rudy can’t reliably create his own shot (yet), but I also want the role players to be reliable and consistent. Travis is far from that.

The trade-Trav posts have more to do with his value than lack of value. He has value and in some people’s opinions he is less integral than some of the other players on the team that have value.

by shralpster on Dec 19, 2008 12:08 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Travis > Rudy

Rudy has no mid-range game whatsoever. And if he misses his first three attempt, he’s useless for the rest of the game.

Bottom line: He’s as much of a liability as Travis when he’s off; and I when both guys are at their best, I don’t think Rudy brings as much to the table as Outlaw.

by knickfan on Dec 19, 2008 12:17 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wow

Rudy has been so much better and more reliable than Travis this season it isn’t even funny. Rudy’s shooting efficiency is vastly superior and I’d say his D is better also (which isn’t saying much). Totally disagree with you here Knickfan. Travis was great tonight, but games like this have been few and far between for him this season.

I've watched Rudy

shoot the Blazers out of games as often as Travis has. Yet Travis gets all the hate and everybody’s up on Rudy’s jock. It just seems absurd to me.

I don't play the Hollinger game

Maybe I’m old fashioned but all that stat-geekery don’t mean squat to me. What I do see are two players, one who can consistently create his own shot and one who can’t. Tonight you saw how valuable that is. Portland does not win that game without Travis; and Rudy could not have done what Travis did.

by knickfan on Dec 19, 2008 12:28 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ok don't look at PER

look at points per shot. Your statement that Rudy shoots the Blazers out of games as often as Travis is ludicrous. Your last statement (“Portland does not win that game…”) is correct but that’s been true of Rudy in the road Orlando game, road Miami game, road Toronto game… and I could name a few more.

What we're talking about here

are two players who both have a lot of holes in their games. Yet Travis is absolutely roasted on this site while Rudy is praised as some kind of rising deity.

I find that absurd. Now I understand the need around here to have a scapegoat that everyone here can agree to despise. Last year it was Jack; this year it’s Travis. I’m not suggesting he’s perfect. All I’m saying is that I think that his ability to get his own shot off (something I really haven’t see from Rudy) is a much more valuable asset to the Blazers than anything that Rudy brings right now. That could change. But right now, I believe Travis’s skill set is more needed.

by knickfan on Dec 19, 2008 12:36 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

are you kidding me.

How much has Travis’ ability to “get his own shot off” helped us this year? He takes tough, tough shots and although he occasionally heats up and knocks them down, it is nowhere near a consistent skill and not really an ability.

One team, one dream anybody?

ps Rudy got the fan favorite designation...

We see past his faults sometimes but I think he has done more than enough to merit most of the praise.

One team, one dream anybody?

This I agree with

Travis has gotten more blame on BE than he deserves and the Rudy love has gotten way out of hand at times. No question about it.

However, Travis>Rudy is a statement that is not backed up by any look at the numbers (traditional or sabermetric).

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Dec 19, 2008 12:39 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

jk

It’s less about the numbers and more about the skillset that this team needs at this point. Other than Brandon, the Blazers have no on their roster who can consistently get his own shot off. Yeah, Travis has been in something of a shooting slump this year, but don’t sell his skills short. You saw tonight what it meant in the third quarter; you saw it numerous times in the fourth quarter last year.

I understand your frustration with him, but his skill set is not as replaceable as a lot of people here seem to think.

by knickfan on Dec 19, 2008 12:47 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Shooting slump?

He’s right around the same percentages as last year. He’s a low efficiency shooter, period. He can create his own shot, but it doesn’t go in at a high rate. Does it matter if you can create a good look when you don’t usually make it?

Rudy has trouble getting separation, but he makes his crazy step back threes at a higher efficiency than Travis makes his high elevation 19 footers. That’s just a fact.

Look, Travis is a useful bench scorer. He can heat it up and help you win a game. He needs to be in the rotation. He’s also very expendable.

Rudy's a rookie

Travis has been on this team longer than anyone else.

lol

Travis shows up for one night and people start sipping the Rudy haterade?
Rudy always hustles, whether its making a good pass, going all out for a board, or running defenders ragged around screens. Plus his shots are almost always good looks. Travis disappears all the time on D and on O. Travis’ shots are the results of iso one on one. Rudy’s shots are designed.
