I thought Ike looked great

He missed a few gimmies, but for the most part the reason he got those shots was that he was CRASHING the glass. The kid can rebound. He won’t miss layups – that’s just nerves. But the boards are forever.

I hope he keeps getting some PT.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

i was there for the first half

ike did look good sans that missed lay in sequence

by appel82 on Dec 18, 2008 10:36 PM PST up reply actions

and his D on Barnes?

He completely lost his man, twice. I agree that he deserves another shot— unlike Frye, he has good rebounding instincts. He played hard out there. Now he has to play smart and play poised.

It's hard to keep a positive attitude after that 2nd quarter

Let’s hope Portland can turn it around in the second half. Defense has to tighten, and the centers need to not get deeper into foul trouble.

We need to constantly run. Do not let the Suns get transition buckets from the INBOUNDS!

We are sitting around the hoop and hoping to grab offensive boards, and we are just lollygagging back on defense. Steve Nash will burn us to ashes if we keep doing that.

Tom from the Dream Shake here

As for the Oden Call, we Rockets fans feel the pain. Luis Scola put his hand on Kirilenko last year, got called for a foul, and it lost us a big playoff game. Those “touch” fouls are ridiculous.

The team I love

It’s like a high school team. Brandon goes insane for about five minutes, but starts to cool off. He realizes at the perfect time, and plays decoy as his backcourt mate Blake hits two or three in a row. Then Outlaw comes off the bench and goes 4-4.

I love Brandon the most, but I love the feeling of having a TEAM where different guys can come in and do things.

I don't usually write during games

but I want to be on the record saying that the Blazers are going to lose this game.

You just can’t expect to win when most of the team aren’t getting involved.

Blazers win when they play as a team, not when just 2-3 players get all the shots in the last quarter.

The game will get tighter and the Suns aren’t dumb, Roy will get the last 5 shots, he’ll get double and triple teamed and he’ll take the shots anyway. He wants to be Kobe so badly, but he ain’t.

I’m really sorry for the Blazers, we could have won this game, hope I’m wrong and things turn out differently.

See that clip of Channing Frye?

That’s why people (the media, that is) are so down on Greg Oden. Channing Frye gets a demotion, and is still happy and excited and into the game. Meanwhile we saw a shot earlier of Oden clapping listlessly on the bench. Yeah, i mean, the guy is kind of a downer right now. This is not the same guy who sang with the OJay’s on opening night last year.

Well put

He certainly does. What an amazingly talented and amazingly unsmart (BBIQ-wise) dude.

He looked good tonight for the most part though, especially attacking the rack.

Not for nothing, and definitely not based on tonight, but I think Trout might make a better backup three than Martell (assuming Nic matures into a starter). But I haven’t seen Martell play as much.

If Trout focuses on getting to the rack like he did tonight (in part), he can be a beast. And extremely valuable.

52 on 27 shots

According to espn

Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. Crazy game

Nobody, and I mean nobody, could stop anybody. That was crazy nuts sick bonkers.

Luckily, Roy could be stopped least at all (as in, not at all, except once or twice by the refs).

BTW, there were a few of the most atrocious calls I’ve ever seen mixed in there. The fifth foul on Oden should get that ref fined. Roy got hammered on his take to the bucket. Oden got murdered on that hook he airballed.

Bayless did not look like a guy who wants to be traded. Love the rookie giving the fist pump and then running out on the court the do the air-shoulder-bump with Roy. B

Apparently unlike Ben, I thought Ike looked GREAT. I don’t care about missed layups. That’s nerves. I care about rebounds. Ike got after it on the glass.

Loved Lamarcus’s game tonight. Obviously he didn’t get any shots down the stretch, but most of the shots he did take all game were inside looks attacking the bucket. That’s what he needs to do.

It cannot be stressed enough how long of a process this is. Amare took 2+ years to get back in his groove after surgery. To see GO doing this well this early is remarkable in and of itself.

by jksnake99 on Dec 18, 2008 10:54 PM PST up reply actions

Wow

That was crazy. I don’t even know where to start.

Our D was bad again, but give PHX credit… they flat out couldn’t miss. There were plenty of awful defensive lapses (leaving Barnes open 10000 times) but also plenty of PHX buckets off of crazy plays.

We had some luck early in the year (Houston and SA games for instance), then lady luck turned against us last week. She owed us one, and delivered with LMA’s bank shot and the bounces on rebounds in the last minute.

As for Roy. Wow. Last year he was a borderline allstar (one of the last guys in no doubt, and DWill, BDav, Manu and Tony all had legit cases). Now he is a slam dunk, no doubt, automatic allstar. That’s a huge jump. He’s still not an MVP candidate (LBJ, CP3, DWade are all well ahead of him), but Hollinger might want to rethink his comment about not wanting to make an MVP list long enough to include Roy… that is, if Hollinger can count to 5 (ok, maybe 8 or 9). Amazing performance.

If the Blazers hadn't gotten unlucky with those last-minute threes

They would be on a four game win streak, powered by Roy scoring 30+ in all four games. He’s figuring out what anyone watching the games could see – he just seemingly can’t be stopped by most guys.

If that were the case, he’d start getting a LOT of national press. He will get quite a bit for this game, anyway, of course.

He’s automatic on the pull up and impossible to keep out of the paint. There’s no way to D him up except for an elite few defenders (like Mr. Artest).

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

Anyone think Brandon thought it was Honor Greg Oden night with that point total?

Went to the Suns forum on Real GM

to see what their thought on Roy. Surprisingly, found a lot of complaining about unfair reffing. Really? They thought the refs were unfair against them? Geez.

Oden

impressed me with the way he played with five fouls.

He got much more disciplined; played well within himself and did not over-commit. He also got two huge offensive boards at critical junctures. This was a huge step forward in his development.

Demopoulos tried to lose us this game.

Luckily Brandon stopped him.

I’m blaming him for how close this game was. Should have been by more. ;)

Well said

I’d been meaning to mention that too. Oden was outstanding in the 4th while maintaining 5 fouls. Some huge rebounds.

Ben, I'm calling you out for the Diogu comment.

That’s exactly the type of effort the Blazers need in their back-up PF. Sure, he missed some layins and got a little lost on D, but he banged away inside.

by PoliSam on Dec 18, 2008 11:05 PM PST reply actions

+1

effort, rebounds, and throwing your body instead of taking jump shots for a PF counts for something in this league

Not to defend Ben..but...

we are all so happy to see someone play power forward correctly …there were lapses in execution, but positioning, rebounding effort, just being present in the flow of the play on the right part of the court…..we’re giving that some extra points…hopefully the level of execution will improve..but it looked pretty ugly at times :-)

by LetsBlaze on Dec 18, 2008 11:11 PM PST up reply actions

And as I said above Ike was just the right guy for that tonight

strong wide body..forcing bigs to defend down low…what i asked for in pregame out here …:-)

by LetsBlaze on Dec 18, 2008 11:13 PM PST up reply actions

Oden was A FACTOR

3 or so of his fouls were really stupid, but when he was in the game he was GOOD. 8 points on 5 shots, plus 2 blocks. Amazingly he only had 2 rebounds but they were both HUGE.

We're 2nd in the NBA with most retired jerseys?

wow

I think I can only add "The NBA, where caring for everybody but the fans happens". --amlmart1

by prezofdeath on Dec 18, 2008 11:05 PM PST reply actions

we've retired about 4 that frankly have no business being up there

Twardzik, Hollins and Gross should not be up there. Great players, but not worthy of being up there. That would be like Portland winning one title with this group and then Outlaw’s jersey getting retired.

I'm confused

watching the feature at halftime, it appeared as if the Blazers retiired #30 twice – once for Porter, once for Gross.

by knickfan on Dec 18, 2008 11:08 PM PST up reply actions

that's what they did...

which leads me to HONOR SHEED

honor rasheed wallace

by Zaron5551 on Dec 18, 2008 11:09 PM PST up reply actions

yeah

They were retiring Porter and had to retire Gross because they both wore 30.

Which explains my signature. Why didn’t Sheed, the third number 30, get his jersey retired?

honor rasheed wallace

by Cablinasian on Dec 18, 2008 11:09 PM PST up reply actions

Portland should have between 2 and 5 jerseys in the rafters.

No brainers: Drexler and 77 (for the entire title team).
Almost no brainer: Walton (amazing career, but also a very short Blazer career).
Good choices, but not obvious: Lucas, Porter

Everyone else: No business in the rafters.

pulling some good quotes.

How can people still be downplaying Roy?

I’d like to think that when our team loses we don’t ever put down the opposing team. Instead, we focus on our own faults. This is a classless showing by Phoenix fans.

According to ESPN ranking system and EFF

This game by Roy is 3rd best of this season after Amare’s 49 and Parkers 55 point games. Doesn’t show up on the list yet, but Roy managed an ESPN # of 76.1 and EFF of 40.2.
