This is quite interesting. Gian Casimiro does a great job of showing some of the Blazers defensive breakdowns, and unfortunately, a lot of them involve LaMarcus. He gives credit to Joel Przybilla for coming in and having proper positioning and execution.
This guy (Giam) is quite talented, I must say. He should be picked up by an NBA team as a video coordinator.

great video
Really highlights some dreadful D by LMA and Oden. Both those guys have to get better at being able to show on the pick and roll and still getting back to their man.

The help defense is terrible.

totally agree
But I didn’t realize how bad until this video, this is a really excellent break down of the problems with our help defense.
Jaws were hitting the floor as Greg repeatedly attempted to tear the rim off the backboard...

wow
a real eye opener. przybilla is apparently quicker than oden and lma haha. everyone is usually so quick to condemn our perimeter defenders but the truth is, they’re men are usually getting free on screens and our bigs aren’t rotating fast enough (or in lma’s case, not at all) to cover them. people thought greg was gonna step in and add another dimension to our defense but it looks like he has a ways to go. forget a new assistant coach, lma and greg need to learn some lessons from the vanilla gorilla.
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

I think Przy *is* quicker that Oden right now
Oden is still not at full speed, so hopefully he’ll get back to the athlete he was at Ohio State.
In LMA’s case its a combination of laziness and poor defensive instincts. Hopefully Nate makes those guys watch themselves on tape… that kind of defense should make those two embarrassed.

Is it bad
if our Center does not come up high on the pick and roll? I can only see a serious downside if the opposing team’s Center is a threat with the jump shot.

It is bad if the screener rolls hard to the hoop which Lee does
It ends up a 2 on 1 situation.
The center has to hedge, deter the dribbler away from the hoop and cut off the pass to the screener. Oden doesn’t have the quickness to hedge, so he has to try and cut the dribbler off after the screen. He picks up a lot of fouls doing this.

I always knew LMA defense was so-so, definitely not upper tier
But that video did him no favors.
Also, Blake blows on defense. He’s constantly out of position.
Oden’s pick and roll defense has been a problem all year. No surprise. He has no lateral quickness.
Give it up for Przybilla. The best big man on the Blazers.

This is why
our defense IS going to improve. It’s not just individual defense, it’s team defense.
Joel is recognizing plays as they develop, while our other bigs are still weak at this. Experience is a big part of that. It’s easy to see it on the screen when somebody stops the action. It is much harder to recognize the situation developing in live action. But it will come, and when it does, you are talking at least 3-4 additional stops a game — and that is the difference between poor defensive efficiency and good defensive efficiency.

This is great!
I love this kind of stuff.
Anyone know where there’s more stuff like this out there?

I don't know
but I’d love to find more Blazer-centric videos like this.
