Few things I'll ramble on about here, absolutely nothing Blazers related...
Finished my first semester of college with a 3.8 GPA, oddly I feel a little unsatisfied with that number. Almost disappointed.
Being a night person has downsides when you are stuck at home and mysteriously lurking out at night raises suspicion from the parental units, thus I am left to pick at internet acquaintances to find conversation, such is life.
Now I see how life spreads people apart, dichotomizing them into the successful and the failures; some people are still content to slavishly waste away their life in community college, and it seems shocking.
I've been listening to The Clash (self titled album) a lot recently, it makes me feel good. I feel like that band stood for the rebellion, and just dissidence in general, whatever personal of societal form that may be. It's like no matter, what it is, even if I don't know what to do about, that very idea that I recognize something as wrong, something that I should purposely disengage myself from gives a lot of meaning to the otherwise random and seemingly meaningless human interaction. Creating a self narrative like that has proven to be pretty useful.
On music I feel like 2008 has been a sort of down year for music overall, not a lot that was amazing. I think my favorite so far has been an album by can'tsayitonblazersedge Buttons called Street Horsings. Movie-wise, it felt the same as well, although all the big releases are just about to come out. I need to see Doubt, The Wrestler, and Milk. Frost Nixon was good, and Batman although it was a superhero flick, was legit, just ask JJ Reddick he's seen it 10 times.
Oh and I might blog on my own. Well probably not, but I've been working on a layout.
Oh and one more thing, I started watching Dexter, that one show on Showtime, it's great. I would highly recommend it.

congrats on your GPA
that’s a darn good first semester GPA. My first semester GPA in college was around 3.3 and I still ended up getting into my grad school of choice. Incidentally, my first semester was also my lowest GPA semester in college.

I ended up with an MA too.
But my first trimester in college was worse. I was like, “You mean I have to READ this stuff? I don’t just show up and get a B for participating like High School?”. Ended CumLaude.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

In a word it's different
it shifts a lot stylistically and tempo-wise even within individual songs. I really like it though, it’s really fresh when we’ve gotten a lot of rehashed Oughts indie this year. I think overall opinion is divided, some people find the shifting nature of the new album a negative. I don’t think it’s as good as Hissing Fauna just because it’s not as tightly constructed, Skeletal Lamping kind of sprawls out in different directions and not all of it really fits. But it’s definitely in its league quality wise in my opinion. Lyrically, I feel like it’s a lot more sexual lol

How cool to see this on Blazersedge at 5 AM, a conversation about Street Horrrsing.
Though it is 10:30 AM now. I have yet to listen to Skeletal Lamping but Street Horrrsing was definitely one of the best last year. In response to the 2008 comment, mostly, I thought 2008 was a year where there were pretty clearly bad and good releases, and in genres across the board.
Anyone like Fleet Foxes or Bon Iver? I’ve been trapped by the snow (and not having a car, as a college student) and have been soothed by the above’s melodies.

Although I'm a minarchist, I think that the Iraqi journalist who tossed his shoes at President Bush ...
should’ve been more aware of the legal ramifications. Despite being a massive fan of civil disobedience, I understand that it’s only effective during the right circumstances. That also goes for someone martyring themselves, as the act of dying for some cause must bring about a substantial change; otherwise, it’s all for naught.
On the whole, every individual should weigh the pros and cons of any possible decision before making it.

I don't think he got beat up
Al-Zeidi’s brother, Maitham, said he spoke with the reporter by telephone Tuesday and was told that he expected to be in court Wednesday morning.
Maitham al-Zeidi also said his brother sounded fit, despite claims by another brother that he had suffered a severe beating after being grabbed by Iraqi security at the Sunday press conference.
“Muntadhar has a broken leg, cracked ribs, some injuries under his eye, and his leg is also hurting him,” al-Zeidi’s brother Dhargham told The Associated Press. “He was taken to the hospital today around noon.”
Dhargham said his information came from a friend who works as a security guard in the Green Zone where the shoe-throwing incident took place.
Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf also denied reports that al-Zeidi had been badly injured.
“The rumors about al-Zeidi being injured or being hurt are baseless,” Khalaf told the AP. “You can check that when you see him in the criminal court tomorrow morning.”

not sure who is being referred to in this show toss at community colleges. Im familiar with the people who stay in college for the social life, most seem to be art or music majors (Im probly wrong.)
As someone who had to attend two years of Community College because I wasnt rich and my parents didnt pay my tuition, Im glad about the experience. At least I didnt turn into the elitist fraternity hob-nobbers many of my spoiled friends did.
Side note, Rick Adelman was coaching the men’s basketball team at Chemekata CC when I went, and I met him once after a racquetball game he had with my brother. Super nice guy, and great coach I still havent forgiven Paul Allen for letting go.

I have no problem with going to CC but I know a few people that are going there that have absolutely no motivation to do well enough to transfer. One of my friends is incredibly lazy, and it really bothers me, because he is an intelligent individual but seems to have no grounding in reality. He told me the other day he was only going to class on test days. Combined with the fact that he isn’t working either makes me really question where his life is heading.
It’s phrased awkwardly because it was 4am. :)

Not quite related to Junk, but...
Was anyone watching the Knicks-Lakers game yesterday, and watching the sequence at the end where Nate Robinson was fouled to prevent a 3 (by him) to tie the game? I know we’ve been over why the Blazers don’t like to do that, but I think it oughta be tried. Really.

by RecordTOs on Dec 17, 2008 10:37 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
I think that the fear about fouling when up by 3
is that the player with realize that he is going to be fouled and then threw up a shot as the foul is coming to earn the third free throw.
Granted that would take some BBIQ to do, but I think that it what most coaches are afraid of.
by tingeyga on Dec 17, 2008 12:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That is why if a player was going to commit to the foul first strategy
They’re best off fouling right away on the inbounds. I think we could have gotten Turk as he ran behind the clump of players. Though that was a lucky, lucky shot.
I also felt like we didn’t do enough hack-a-Shaq this season against the evil Suns. Before long, we won’t need to hack-a-Shaq to dominate them, but for those losses, it would have been wise.

Brandon notes:
On expectations: He said that they’ve talked to owners and management and they understand that they are still growing and are tempering expectations (not demanding playoffs) for this season. Brandon said that Nate and the players, however, feel that they have the talent and are growing enough that their goal is the playoffs this year, no question
On Greg: “We don’t need him running around trying to be Shaq just yet.” Basically he said he thinks Greg was down a little bit for awhile but he’s really just out there focusing on remembering plays and learning the system. He’s still a rookie.
On Rudy: “I find myself watching him out there alot.” He said he likes the gamer attitude Rudy and Sergio bring to the second unit, the excitement, the big plays.
Rome said he was “Good man, good leader, good player.”
Well said, sir. Also, apparently Brandon has his own line of leatherman? I want one for Christmas.

Dheepan, how efficient, pragmatic is a high GPA?
In the early ‘60s, one of my HS teammate/friends attended OSU on a Navy ROTC scholarship. A HS National Honor Society Student, he received a B in one of his early college classes, spoiling an otherwise perfect "Gentleman’s C" academic performance. From a working class family with conventional Eisenhower era values, he used the university setting more for social networking than study. After serving as an aircraft carrier pilot (Vietnam) he returned to college to become an attorney for wealthy, elderly people.
Can one devote excess energy/focus to elevating one’s statistics?

The only people I know who get asked about their GPA after college
Are accountants, lawyers, and doctors. Athletes get asked about it while in school. As long as you get the degree, employers don’t care if it was done with a 2.5 or a 4.0.
by tominhawaii on Dec 17, 2008 11:26 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
GPA can be important if graduate school is in your plans
Also I do think that employeer care a little bit about the difference between a 2.5 and a 4.0. The difference between a 3.0 and a 3.5, probably not but there does seem to me to be a huge difference in a 2.5 and a 4.0.

Grad School
As for the employer part, I I think they care if they ever thought to ask about it. Even your degree doesn’t matter. Excluding the folks I mentioned earlier, the only people besides them, that have jobs based on their degree do social work. Most employers care more about your experience.

Depends on what grad school you're applying to as well
the major universities down in California who have MBA programs will scrutinize your work experience when you apply.
Law Schools could care less about that, it’s all about your LSAT score with them.

by Bust a Bucket on Dec 17, 2008 6:35 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Good grades are one part of it
And definitely not the least important one. But other things are important as well. For example, you might skip some really interesting but difficult courses fearing it could lower your GPA a bit. That wouldn’t be wise. Some universities have grade non-disclosure policies to prevent that. But even if your school doesn’t or you choose to disclose your grades, solid masters programs and recruiters should recognize that.
Not event to speak of all the other extracurricular things that make the time great but could have a slight impact on your grades. You seem to do very well at your university with the effort you put in at the moment, so you might want to keep the other things in mind.
This from someone who has attended almost everything from a technical school that isn’t even really recognized in my home state, to a mediocre but interesting polytechnic and ivy league schools ;-)

School systems are hardly comparable, so I have completed some studies that you would never find in an American high school and university and am lacking others. I would have made some things differently in retrospect since I didn’t really know about the quality and global reach of universities (much less rankings) when I graduated from high school with a very good comparable GPA, and there were no such things as school counselors to say “hey you should really do this or go there”. Then I wish some schools already had the loan forgiveness programs for undergraduates they have today, since my family isn’t exactly rich which excluded many programs that today might be open to me. So I have/had to make up for this via graduate and extension schools, which takes probably more time and effort that the other way, but I can also find benefits in the slower and less travelled road I took.

Wharton for the third one?
If Yes: Damn, you da man, man.
What unique high school studies are you talking about?
Have you ever read “A Road Less Traveled By”?

No, finance is not my strong side but I do have a subscription to Knowledge@Wharton if that counts :)
Regarding high school, well first of all until recently it was 9 years (13 total incl. elementary), now that has been reformed and shortened. So you have a bit more time to go into details. I spent ca. one year during high school abroad at a US school, and e.g. had the impression that science courses were handled fairly different. At home I had courses in chemistry, physics, biology, and information technology (voluntary), while in the US I had the feeling that was often all mixed into one giant course :) Also all students had social studies in history, geography, political science all in separate courses. On the other hand there are less fractioned “advanced placement” courses than in the US, most years everybody is just in the same class no matter how well they are doing.

Was it somewhere near a T-stop in Cambridge?
Sciences (biology, especially) and Social Sciences (econ) were my favorite classes in high school.

I'm not Jscot (though I have no idea where he studied)
Ah, the other one. Yes, for a while. But not in a competitive admission program, which makes a lot of things more relaxed but is not necessarily to the detriment of the courses (and brings in some people with more experience). Still, they do have great undergraduate programs but that was out of my reach for the mentioned reasons.

Why is TP's head so pointy?
I didn’t notice it until anglemart1 posted that caricature. He seriously could do a coneheads skit and not have to wear a prosthetic head.

does anyone rememeber Michael Jordan on SNL?
back when he had hair? .. Think he mighta done a conehead thing…really remember Zappa doing the Conehead skit…he has a song called Coneheads on the You Are What You Is collection …:-)

Jordan didn't have hair then
And it was prolly 13 years after the last time the Coneheads were on SNL.
GEEZ GET YOUR SNL TIMELINE CORRECT.
Jordan was on in the early 90’s, I’d say 1992 or so, during the Phil Hartman/Dana Carvey/Mike Meyers years. The Coneheads were only during the 70s, when Danny Akroyd and Jane Curtin were in the cast. Maybe they did a conehead skit when making a special appearance I guess…
And hmm… the Coneheads movie possibly came out around the same time as Jordan’s SNL gig, so maybe they did a tie-in sketch…
Hmmm… nope, I don’t think so. I don’t remember it. IT’S IMPOSSIBLE.
I liked the monologue sketch where Jordan endorses douches and Jordan approved hardcore pornography.

The subject of Knickfan's fanpost is Bill Bayno
Bayno is a recovering alchoholic, so to say he should have a drink to calm his nerves would be in bad taste were one to really make the joke (and since we’re just discussing the idea of the joke and not actually executing it, this is ok).
I think Bust a Bucket would rather wait till Bayno dies from a alchoholic related death, and THEN he’ll make a joke about it— ZING!

the clique aka The Legion of Gloom
Im surprised Mortimer and Tom don’t have their own Morning Sports show.
So I got thinking about the old Legion of Doom from the old Superfriends cartoon. ’Member? The one where the building could actually fly out of the swamp.
Its possible Lex Luthor (aka Mortimer) has turned the Bedge into his Hall of Gloom, and recruited Bizarro (aka TiHa) to bring in new members, such as Solomon Grundy (aka BustaBucket) and who knows who else they can coerce into their diabolical scheming world.

although they were certainly helped by the fact that the Spurs missed tons of wide open 3s. David West made two huge 3s (his 4th and 5th of the season) to put the Hornets over the top.
