12/16/2008 Junk Drawer - Christmas Tree Edition
So I finally got my tree up a few minutes ago.
I decorated it with some multi-colored lights and some nice red metal globe things my mom got me for my 6 ft Noble Fir. She even gave me 5 boxes of random assorted Christmas decorations! The festivities will now include snow globes, Stockings to hang by the fire, and of course, a bunch of puffy white snowmen to adorn every random nooks and crannie.
It usually takes me a while to warm up to the Holidays for some reason. But to think it's only 8 days till the man in the red suit brings me that new Blackberry Bold i want. Oh and Santa, please for the sake of hypothermia can I also get some insulation for my house! I so desperately want, or perhaps, need it pumped into my walls and all over my attic immediately, as in, it's getting cold here in Portland hopefully preparing for a White Christmas. How cold? It's in the Teen's outside (hey for Portland that's cold!) and inside My house it was 55 degree's this morning! I can't even afford to run the furnace at night. You have to love Suburbia. They sure did build them well in 1970, but they didn't insulate for squat.
I played basketball in the snow for at least 3 hours yesterday. I only say it was this long because the neighbor kids mom's called them inside after an hour or so, and my roommate and I dueled it out in front of our house for another hour or so. The sun was down and the game was still on. As Brandon Roy says, shooting with gloves on is hard, and try as I might attempting to win the game on desperation 3's, I came up just short.
As is the lesson to be learned people.
Always stay properly hydrated when exercising outdoors in winter.
Hot Toddy your are the man.

Tree's should be trees
To save money, I’m trying to avoid turning on the heat in the house as much as possible… it’s been going at about 62 degrees… 55?!?!?! Gotta be hecka cold. Ugh.
honor rasheed wallace
It was too cold, we are talking I was making Ice Cubes, on my kitchen Counters
I also just put some of that plastic film over my huge front window which had a huge draft coming through it somehow. Twas crazy as soon as I got a good seal you could see it fill up like a balloon. Oh SANTA, add new windows to my Wish List. Alot of good new insulation is going to do while my windows are single pane.
Ugh, The joys of being a home owner. I don’t know if I’m this dumb but it took me forever to get the tape to stick to the window sill. This cold even affects the tape’s ability to stick so I had to heat everything up with a hair dryer first. You should of have seen it, Crazy Guy drying out the windows at midnight.
Go ahead and post your worst "with a trailblazer" photo on your avatar, can you beat mine?

Man I am in the same boat
Our house has single pane wood frame windows, the bedrooms are upstairs and for some reason our house seems to disobey simple laws of physics with the upstairs never getting about 50 degrees. Ugh, I have seriously considered moving into the living room and covering all of the windows and walls with blankets to keep a tiny bit of heat in the house. Houses in portland are just not built for the cold, and this recent freeze has been horrible.

I think I am a wimp now
It’s in the low 50s here in LA, and I am FREEZING in my apartment.
It feels like it is in the 50s right in my living room, so I even got the space heater on (and I’m almost never cold). This place is horribly insulated as well, but of course normally that isn’t a HUGE deal, and usually it’s a big deal because it doesn’t retain the goodness my AC does.
I knew it would happen, but LA is making me soft.

Is it going to snow Wednesday?
The suspense is killing me. The local stations all say it is going to snow. Weather.com says it will be snow early turning to rain with a high of 37 degrees. Oregonlive says the samething. Why don’t we know for sure? Any metioroligists on Bedge tonight that want to tell me what is going to actually happen?

Should I ask him about the meaning of life too?
The question we should really ponder is not why al-Zeidi could be so impolite as to throw his shoes at Bush, but why the dozens of other shoes in the room remained on people's feet, why no foot odor ever purifies the air at a White House press conference, why a man who throws his shoes at our president is more popular than our president himself.
Hope not
My daughter has her Christmas / Holiday program on Wednesday morning. If it snows in the afternoon, that’s fine.
Weather forecasting is a bit tricky on the west coast, particularly the NW ...
… due to the lack of data. The more input you have for your weather calculations, the better you can refine them, meaning more accurate predictions. In most places around the country weathermen can call up and get precise data on barometric pressure, temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity, etc. It allows them to get a pretty complete picture. Here, they can’t just call up some traveling tuna and ask for that information. Satellites can provide some information. but nothing like having multiple ground reporting stations to call on.
One of the reason’s I get a kick about how many people so readily accept the predictions of global climate models is that even though it is easier to predict weather for a local region, they can at best predict about 5 days out. After that, all bets are off. Yet people are willing to believe predictions for the entire planet, which is several orders of magnitude more difficult to model accurately, that go 10 to 50 years out. This is one of several reasons I spend my time voluteering with an educational non-profit. Too many people, smart people, are scientifically illiterate.

No.
But you might get banned for the Fabio avatar. :-)
On a related anecdote – when I was going to school in LA, I once nearly ran over Fabio at a West Hollywood gas station. He walked out from between two pumps as I was pulling in. The guy is frickin’ huge.
Oh, and he had the nicest looking young (young) man in his Mercedes…
I just call 'em like I see 'em
I never said anything was going on. Let’s just say my wife and I looked at each other and said ‘chicken’.
What, a dude can't have a good looking friend?
And go for a ride together?
And what, a dude can’t kiss said good looking friend without it being a scandal?
WHAT CENTURY IS THIS, I coulda’ sworn this wasn’t NAZI CHINA OF THE 1700’s.
By the by, what does “chicken” mean in this context?
The old dude on Lost was at the same sports bar I met KP at here in Santa Monica, and the old dude from Lost was playing pool with a sweet young male thing and I got a distinct vibe from the table that made me go “Hmm, ok”. Of course, now I’m judging without knowing and whose to say I can’t go play pool with one of my gay pals without being judged all over the place.
YOU AND ME MAKE ME SICK.
Mortimer
I thought that the "chicken" in this context was
that they were chicken for not going up and talking to Fabio and saying something like “Hey Fabio, I really liked you in those ‘I Can’t Believe Isn’t Not Butter’ commericals.”
My favorite Fabio moment
Was when he was on Conan O’Brian to promote one of his novels he ‘wrote’, and Conan asked him about a plot detail in the book and Fabio had no idea what he was talking about. It was hilarious.
I think it was even funnier than the pigeon in the face while roller coasting incident, because that looked like it hurt and Fabio could be wearing an eyepatch today if that bird hit him just in inch either direction (though, Fabio with an eyepatch would be pretty awesome).

That is TOTALLY something I shoulda’ known.
I feel out of it now, especially since it’s been used since the 1800’s :-(
Ain’t Fabio known for havin’ lotsa girlfriends though? Maybe that’s just for show, like Troy Aikman’s “date” with Nancy Kerrigan.

Ohhh I know beard all right

In this thread, our very own Bust a Bucket made fun of the Ricky Berry suicide, and got banned from Sactown Royalty. Sorry, BaB, love you man, but that was so totally uncool, and you deserved the ban totally.
If you also think he deserved it, and want to send a message to Sactown Royalty that Blazer fans don’t approve of that stuff, go over there and rec Section214 for banning him, and say so as a Blazer fan.
Do you like asparagus?
Ooph
I don’t remember Ricky Berry, but just looked him up, and ooph.
If it’s a joke made by one of us here at our home site, it depends on the context and quality of the dark humor. It’s iffy still…
But to make that as an outsider on the non-home site, it’s asking for trouble.
Was LaRue Martin really sucky? I only know who he is because he was a Blazer #1 pick and seems to have sucked. Was he epically crappy? I’ve never seen him play in any form of media, and he is decades, EONS before my time. I blame him for Busta’s banning.
Ricky Berry seems like a sad story.
Mortimer
The best part of LaRue
was that on those rare occasions when he actually scored, the Schonz would say, “Two for LaRue!”
You rarely got to hear it, but it was neat when you did.
And that was the best part of his career.
By all accounts, a class individual, though. I never heard anything but good about LaRue as a person. He was the kind of guy that you felt bad about criticizing him. It wasn’t his fault he got picked #1 and wasn’t good enough to even be picked #50.
Do you like asparagus?
LaRue Martin is a Community Services Manager with UPS
He is often cited as the worst # 1 draft pick in NBA history. He outplayed Bill Walton in college, though.
I can't get too worked up over suicides.
My sympathy lies with the people they leave behind.

this goes back in time aways
when Darius’ popularity in Portland had reached an all time low. A certain someone made a quip that Darius should “just kill himself” then included a mental health link in case anyone actually felt like that. It was a sick joke, like this one at Sactown Royalties expense, and one that doesnt go away with an unremorseful or insincere apology.

Ah, tominhawaii back in March (thanks to the search function)
I take it you’re not a big fan of his?
I sometimes see him as a mentor on here for his deranged view of the world, which I partially share. Things are pretty screwed up in the world. Does that mean we should be irresponsible and senseless in everything we do? Of course not. But sometimes it’s hard to take things seriously when everything seems so surreal.
As far as my comments, all I really did was mention the guy’s name. And there is some history between me and PookeyGuru. I actually had never heard of Ricky Berry. When Pookey first spoke of him, I thought he was talking about Rick Berry or one of his sons (Brent and Jon’s brother). I thought Pookey was talking about Rick Berry and he jumped down my throat when I made some comment about shooting free throws granny style. It was an honest mistake for which I got hammered and sort of held a grudge against Pookey. So when he mentioned LaRue Martin, I said “Ricky Berry Jr.” (as in his son, not him) might be available on the waiver wire. It was part ignorance, part bad taste. I didn’t know the sensitivity surrounding him. Would I have done had I known it would piss people off and get me banned? Heck no. That’s why I apologized.
And I’d like to hear your opinion on what makes an apology remorseful versus or unremorseful or sincere versus insincere?

Yeah, I don’t understand why Sactown takes it more seriously than other deaths
This statement serves to invalidate the feelings of of those affected by this tragedy. There’s a big difference between not understanding and not having the capacity to empathize.
Kevin Duckworth died, but somehow doesn’t have the same aura as Ricky Berry or Len Bias… I guess if you die before being able to fulfill your potential then you are more sacred or something.
The same aura? this choice of wordsmanship is not only ineptly applied, it suggests somehow there should be a common sentiment as to they way peoples lives end.
The Sarah Palin quote might be “funny” in some other context, but used to obfuscate the matter as a means of bringing levity to the topic is contrary to feeling actual pity for the situation.
Look, BaB, being offended is a choice, I believe that. But that does not exclude one from behaving responsibly or demonstrating sympathy to others. Yea the world is a messed up place, which is all the more reason to take responsibility and own each of our mistakes. I have a lifetime of em and its not easy to confront them and bear the guilt of shame. Honesty however bears no pox.
As this case goes, and was stated in the parent topic, what was said was out of line and innapropriate. Own it. Im sorry for coming across as some moral crusader here, but some topics really burden my soul.

I own it... I'm not trying to avoid responsiblity
Like I said, part ignorance, part bad taste. 100% my fault. And it was based on a history with PookeyGuru, the guy who first enlightened me about Ricky Berry. There was a context that I understood and Pookey understood that isn’t obvious to anyone else. Can it still hurt people and is it still irresponsible? Absolutely. I’m not disputing that.
I’m not as well versed in end of life issues, so I’ll take your word for it on the things you said above.
On the Sarah Palin quote, there may be a misunderstanding. It has nothing to do with the Ricky Berry thing. It’s not supposed to be connected to or related to Ricky Berry. It was just that after I got banned from SacTown, I realized how much time I spend reading mostly useless stuff over there. And I thought about how much time I spend here, which could also be described as useless. So I thought that if I’m going to spend so much time and effort writing these comments, I’m at least going to attached a politically motivated signature as some people do. That’s all. It was not to make light of anything. It was actually to be serious and make a political statement.

I personally believe too many people ...
… get caught up in desire to “demonstrate sympathy”. Some take it a step further and take offense when others don’t exhibit what they consider to be a sufficient degree of sympathy or, at a minimum, sensitivity.
One of the things I believe in is that life is hard and then you die. That’s pretty much been true throughout mankind’s existence. One thing we can all count on is becoming dead. Once you accept this simple fact, it gets kind of hard to get all worked up over a person dying. If you are a person of faith (and a tenant of your faith is some sort of life beyond this mortal existence) then it makes even less sense to get all worked up.
Now for most people in this country, life isn’t that hard. At least in terms of both mankind’s historical experience and in terms of how a majority of people currently alive experience it. So the scales further tilt away from needing to feel some sense of sympathy when someone passes. I don’t mean to it’s ok to be purposefully insensitive, but one person’s idea of a joke is another’s idea of cruel insensitivity.
I doubt I’d ever be mistaken as the most sensitive person in the room. That does not mean I am without sympathy. There are in fact a lot of people I can feel sympathy for. Those who choose to kill themselves rank pretty low on that list however. As I said, the people they leave behind have first call on my sympathy. Maybe it’s because I believe that killing one’s self is an extremely selfish and insensitive act when a person has family and friends that care about them. For the those who don’t, well they then have my sympathy. At least to the extent of their being alone.

As a Beaver...
As a Beaver I was sick to see the poor showing. Banker CAN’T game plan for a spread team (the zone read is amazingly effective, is it not?) and we showed that at PSU and again int he CW. I think the ducks saved us from a blowout in the Rose Bowl, that is unless we could’ve brought a better spread defense to the CW. Yuck, still makes me sick. Yielding all that yardage at home was just unacceptable.
Losing three in a row was tough. Winning two in a row was bliss!
I wish I could say I like the ducks all games except for one but I don’t—I just don’t hate them. I used to find rooting for the ducks was kind’ve easy in non-interstate match ups but then Nike went all Tron on their asses and put them in their crazy spaceman costumes, changing the colors and what not. I just can’t stomach the sight of those unis.
As a Penn State Alum whose daughter goes to OSU
I was pretty much neutral, though I admit to not very much excitement at a Penn State – OSY rematch.
I just thought it was ironic that you were degrading people from "Vantucky"

I’ve never lived in Washington, but I wouldn’t be ashamed to live in Vancouver, Camas, Washougal, anywhere. Dave’s dad live in Vancouver. Seems like a cool guy for churning out Dave. Probably cool for other reasons too.
To equate being from Vancouver to a lack of class is elitist. Isn’t U of O supposed to be the elitist school in Oregon?

I’m Portland born and bred and, like most native NE Portlanders I know (it IS possible I just know a bunch of jerks, I’m aware of this), we live to rip on Portland’s Canada/Vantucky and its population of Couv-rats, Couv-snakes, Couvies, Vancs, etc. I’ve dated and befriended many, so more or less it’s just in jest.
I don’t think it’s as bad as, oh, say, making a joke about a dude killing himself. I mean, only a dick would do that, right?
I didn't make a joke about a dude killing himself

I didn’t know about your little incident in March until today… but not surprised a bit that it happened.
Like you said back then, different things mean more or less to different people. I can’t stand racist or gay jokes, but don’t really have the experience with suicide to fully understand the feelings people have about it. People have different have different backgrounds, experiences… one man’s joke is another man’s torture. Dark humor to some is light humor to others is no humor to others.

Suicide sucks
I make the off color joke every now n’ again around here, and in real life I am much worse. This is a toned down (for better or worse) version of Mortimer, and that’s largely because we’re around strangers who don’t know us along with friends who understand I could be joking, PLUS saying bad jokes in print with no vocal inflection or delivery can really make them seem a LOT worse.
It all depends.
Everyone is different.
I’ve known a few people who have committed suicide. It sucks, is a mixture of selfishness and despair, and to the loved ones it is a living hell that long outlasts the act itself. Even though these were my friends (and prolly being my friend partially caused the suicide), I have made jokes about the IDEA of suicide many times in real life to friends and such. To strangers though, it’s different… you have no idea how the thought of suicide really affects them, and that probably outweighs any effect a good suicide joke could have (especially in a public forum with many hidden eyes watching).
Perhaps their mother killed themself, their best friend, whoever, and it haunts them to this day. That sometimes harmless joke ruined their day when they just wanted to read about the Blazers.
Suicide is awful, the ultimate act of giving up and not caring about those around you. I always say there is humor in everything and the right joke can be made about any topic, but part of that is knowing your surroundings and you can’t be shocked that a suicide joke doesn’t go well when you are surrounded by strangers, when you don’t know their sense of humor or their history with suicide, etc.
Every joke is relative, but some jokes you can only hope to get way with when surrounded by friendlies.
I understand you didn’t mean anything hateful by it, but should also understand why people would be upset.

There is also a new phenomena Do doo be-do-do. Some people get offended because they think it is what they are supposed to do. I try not to be overtly offensive because of that, and I know that people find things offensive even when I am trying to have a civil discussion. And I agree with what you said, because some things are offensive and I have no idea why.

that's an awesome explanation... REC
I wonder how to balance the selfishness and how it affects other people with the person’s own suffering/hopelessness/despair.
I’m sure there are some fringe philosophers out there who think people should have complete freedom over themselves, including the choice whether to live or die. And with everyone suffering the same human condition, people should understand and accept if people decide to end their own life. So if you empathize with somebody who is hopeless and depressed, then their choice may be selfish, but also understandable.
That’s obviously not the way people look at it, but do you think there is any merit to that? Should somebody have to suffer for years and years just to appease others?
I’m not trying to advocate it or anything… It is the ultimate selfish act. But is there another side to it that gets misunderstood?

No, you're right
It is extremely tough, because I’m sure most people who feel like they must kill themselves are living in their own private hell, where they feel like they can never be happy again and would just rather give up.
Everyone should (and mostly does) have the right to do what they want to themselves, but the effect it has on others can’t be discounted as well. Enduring through your private hell for others isn’t optimal I am sure, but neither is passing on your hell to your loved ones.
It’s a tough issue. And it’s not like most people who commit suicide are thinking clearly, and understand the ongoing ramifications of their act.
Like I said, it’s a very difficult issue, which makes jokes about it all the more difficult.

I think we should always be cautious about criticizing/mocking the individuals...
unless its about their rediculous OFF COURT behavior…
I trust that most of them would prefer to be playing at the NBA elite level — but like the rest of us simply CAN"T…
Busting their butts for the stupid stuff on the court – – fair game…especially around lack of BBIQ, simple fundamentals, mistakes, — but even here, personal attacks are unecessary..
As certain players around the league earn disrespect through off court antics and nasty/irritating on court presence — then commentary about them personally is appropriate and even warranted – - the league can do without most of the DB’s despite their talent level…
And please — being an irritant on other sites invites people to come irritate us (read as ME) so …please don’t bother?
115 points for us tonight please? Rotate the bigs on the floor — please? does LMA really need to chase their two bigs inside out for 40 minutes? And I totally noticed some spring returning to Greg’s step..new level — pivots improving as early season injury stabalizes .. :-)
I'll be at the game
And though I do not eat the free chalupa, I’d like the opportunity to get my free one and promptly hand it off to the homeless folks outside.
I wish they’d come up with another promotion. With the free T-Bell it’s like saying, “100 points and we all get the runs! Woo hoo!”
I’d love to see 115 tonight but could easily do 160ish with a quad-double for Sergio… but I’m just a dreamer.
My wife and I were "well maybe we should put the tree up this weekend
and we didn’t. The she said," for some reason I don’t care if we put a tree up or not." I agreed. I think we’re taking a Christmas hiatus until grandchildren. We have some candles and Christmassy things out, but nothing that we can’t put away in about half an hour. I ike this a lot better. I was all down with christmas when the kids were little, both in mid 20’s now.
Yeah
They fired my wife’s boss and promoted her. He used to buy a real tree for a couple hundred bucks and then bought everyone $50 gifts. This year my wife tried to get out of buying a tree and convinced everyone to do a gift exchange. She broke down and bought a fake tree at Sears last night.
Christmas doesn’t have the same meaning here. It’s 80 degrees and all the boxes under the tree say “Amazon” on them.
First year of the plastic tree
We got about a 3 footer too and it’s much better. I just hate dealing with the live tree crap…
Does what Steve Kerr is doing with Phonix kind of remind you of what was going on with the Blazers when Kerr was here?
It's like the endless cycle of abuse
He saw his parents fight and beat the kids, so he’s doing the same thing now that he’s the dad.
Trader Bob scarred Kerr for life and now he thinks it is the only way to live. He doesn’t know any better, which makes it all the more sad. And now poor Steve Nash will become scarred from these days, and go on to be a GM who trades and tinkers needlessly…
And the cycle goes on, ruining lives and dreams as it spins.

Am I the only person who thinks Jessica Fletcher was a serial killer?
Every week someone dies and she always managed to blame someone else. No one ever noticed that the one common denominator in every death was that Jessica Fletcher was involved. I’m surprised she’s not in prison.
Is that Murder She Wrote?
I’m watching NBATV, and a classic game between the Knicks and the Lakers from 1970 is on, and man… Wilt Chamberlin really sucks. Was he old at this point? I don’t think he was TOO old in 1970…
Kinda slow-but-mobile, using moves that wouldn’t work on a fellow 7 footer, misses everything with super awkward looking post moves…
And really, everyone sucks in this game. Everyone shoots and runs like a goon. The black players are as athletic as the white dudes. What alternate dimension did this game take place in?!
Brandon Roy woulda’ murderalized these bunch of grannies.
Ok, I come to a conclusion from watching the 60’s and early 70’s games on NBATV: The NBA of the 60s and 70s is what the WNBA is today. Candace Parker would be the logo now if she played in the 60’s.

Where she IS a serial killing writer of mysteries, and she frames a different person each week for a murder and cunningly pretends to be the one who discovers who the murderer is.
That would be pretty awesome, actually.

Oh no no no
But I find the idea hilarious, and I have poked around fanfiction.net or whatever it is called with the hundreds and thousands of fan fiction stuff for the most obscure TV shows and movies…
It is so delightfully pathetic, I love it.
If some fan fic peoples already did this idea, that’s fine. While they’re anonymously posting it on some website no one reads, I’ll be taking the idea to all of the top studios and prod co’s in LA. My pitch will be “We all know Murder is what she wrote… but WHAT IF Murder, is what she DID?!?”
And the title will either be MURDER SHE WROTE 2000 or MURDER SHE… DID?!?!
It all starts as an accident, as Jessica fights off an attacker and accidentally murders him. The thrill envigorates her though, and she believes drinking the victim’s blood gives her eternal youth and psychic powers to solve more crimes. But over time, she does less and less solving of actual crimes and more and more just framing innocents for murders she caused… plus a lot of tummy aches from blood drinking (and the subsequent morphine addiction the tummy pain causes).
A step inbetween the accidental murder and the frame-innocents murders could be murders she does to frame really guilty people, so in a roundabout way she is serving JUSTICE. But then it gets out of hand…!
The opening title sequence can be the same but when the MURDER SHE WROTE title comes up a record screeches like the needle was bumped and WROTE will get crossed out and a big DID will get stamped over it. It will be wacky yet throught provoking!

Because he’ll be so nervous, and Sergio will be too sidetracked by an actual Wii that he won’t realize Haarlow is a Haarlot just raring to go. Only Rudy is well travelled and wise enough to recognize these warning signs, and he will take advantage.
The next morning, Batum is hung over after 2 sips of Goldschlager, and Sergio falls asleep in front of the TV, Wii nunchuck in hand. Rudy will have been long gone by then, only his enchanting musk filling the air remains.
Such is the Rudy.

And when reporters asked her why she turned to meth, she replied that she started the meth because whenever she had messed up before there was always someone there to save her and that’s what she figured would happen when she started meth… but no one saved her this time. Good movie if you like Kaufman and don’t mind a very strange plot-line that has a tendency to drag and anger as long as the concept is interesting and intriguing.
Not one his best movies overall, but probably the most intriguing concept for a plot-line. I was constantly curious to see how he was gonna further tweak his play to make it more real. It also had a bunch of random hilarious dry/dark humor moments. Standard Kaufman really, but I don’t want to say anything more cause the best part of the movie was guessing what was going to happen next.
