Feeling Out A Trade Idea
Hey guys, long-time reader, first-time poster. My friend and I are on a quest to fix the Bulls, and after perusing here, it seems like some Blazer fans are interested in acquiring the services of Kirk Hinrich (while others are vehemently against it because of his contract).
What would be the general consesus of the Blazer fans if you:
Gave Up: Frye, Blake, Webster and RLEC
Got Back: Kirk Hinrich, Gerald Wallace, Drew Gooden (expiring contract)
This is what the entire beast looks like (somebody can throw a draft pick or two at the Bobcats as well).

I think it'd take more to get GWall
Also, there are daily trade junk folders where this kind of thing could really thrive. Check it out!

Well since Charlotte gets hosed
I’m sure they’d be the first to agree to the deal.
P-town and Chicago do well…..not sure if raptors want luol dang for the next 6 years though.

eh.
The Bulls really, really need some frontcourt. O’Neal and Frye would be an upgrade.

Unless Jordan won some undisclosed promises from LeBron in a poker game, this is a pipe dream because of how bad the Bobcats get taken. Everything else in there is reasonable, but I see the Bobcats end as too high a hurdle to overcome.

I love this trade.
If I was a Bobcats fan (do those exist?) I would probably hate you.
There is no way Charlotte is going to give away two of his most valuable players for the corpse of Larry Hughes. Maybe if you threw in some draft picks, but then again Larry Brown hates young players.
This would absolutely fix the Blazer’s defensive woes. Steve Blake gives us minimal perimeter defense and about ten points a game. Kirk Hinrich gives us good perimeter defense and about 10 points a game. It also helps that Kirk is a better 3 point shooter (Did you know Blake shot 27% in 2006-2007? Hinrich has had a better 3pp 4 out of the past 7 years, including this one.) Hinrich is also a better career free-throw shooter (gasp!).
Gerald Wallace would be perfect for Portland. 86% of Outlaw’s shots are jump shots. Only 36% of Wallace’s shots are jump shots. That seems like a pretty great balance. We don’t need another jump shooter.

Free throw reference
Just when I had blocked the Clipper game out of my head…
Agreed though, Hinrich is a major upgrade at the point, and while I’d rather trade Outlaw than Webster, this would strengthen the SF position and lets Batum develop.

I love it for everyone but Charlotte.
The Bulls would get frontcourt players, the Blazers would round out a killer starting five, and the Raptors would trade O’Neal in for some wings.
We need to convince MJ that Larry Hughes is the next MJ.

Wait, Chicago gets in a better position by replacing Deng and Hinrich with J. O'Neal and Blake? How?
Are you sure you want to help Chicago and not Toronto and Portland? I’m pretty sure KP would do that deal and the Raptors would hold celebrations, while the Bobcats get hosed and Chicago fixes some of their problems but creates others. Maybe you could adapt the deal so that Charlotte gets a bit more than just a big contract expiring in 2010 and at least a small forward lands in Chi-town.

Yep, great deal for Portland
while Charlotte gets taken to the cleaners. There’s no way the Bobcats make this deal.

The Bobcats getting hosed...
…just sort of works because it’s the Bobcats. In other scenarios, they get Noah or Deng thrown in. Or somebody old if that’s what LB wants. I’m pretty sure it would not take a lot to trick MJ while he’s on the 18th hole.
As far as the Bulls go, this is their line-up for the rest of the year:
Rose/Blake
Gordon/Thabo
Noc/Frye
JO/Tyrus
Noah/Gray
Then they get 30 million off the cap between JOEC and RLEC. If they can somehow move Noc’s horrendous deal (you guys want him?), they’re major players in 2010. My main concern was that this works on the Blazers end (a minor tweak of Outlaw for Webster works easily), as you are clearly in the best position of all these teams.
Sorry I didn’t dump this in the main trade thread. Thanks for the input.

Honestly...
I think it would be a great deal for the Blazers if Webster stays and Outlaw goes. I love Blake and don’t think KP is going to trade him. Outlaw may be doing enough this year to get himself traded. I don’t mind hanging on to Travis but I get as frustrated by his bad plays as I do excited by his good ones.
But I would have a really hard time with this trade simply because Drew Gooden is one of my least favorite players of all time. Maybe if they bought him out and let him go somewhere else.
The major problem with the reality of the trade is what everyone else is saying…Charlotte gets hosed.

Nobody's chasing a championship THIS year
Unless they’ve been sampling a lil too much of the Portland Chronic.

Yeah,
but they are chasing a championship in the coming years. Is Blake really going to improve that much on defense? Outlaw? Frye? Sergio? Rudy?
Pryzbilla is probably never going to play better than he is right now. That leaves Greg and Batum as the only two guys keeping people from getting to the rim. Greg is going to average a foul every two minutes unless Kevin Pritchard can somehow improve the perimeter defense.
no fixing required with the Blazers.
That sounds like somebody is sampling a lil too much of the Portland Chronic.

no doubt
The Blazers will have to improve the D dramatically in order to contend for the title. Greg and Batum have solid defensive potential, but defensive help from outside the current roster will be needed before this team is a true contender.

Portland was a fairly decent defensive team last season.
I suspect the drop in numbers on the defensive end has more to do with working in 3 rookies into the regular rotation, than anything else. Otherwise you have to make the argument that James Jones was the lynchpin of Portland’s D last season.
I stand by my statement. The Blazers do not need fixing. Nothing is broke. They are basically new and just out of the box. They only need some time to get broken in.

uh no
Portland gave up about 108 points/100 possessions last year. That’s really bad (significantly worse than the 105.7 points/100 that we’re giving up this year). It would place us 27th in D this year. The Blazers need defensive help in order to be a contender. The question is when KP will decide the time is right to make a move.

A few ifs
IF Bayless is as good a defender as Brandon said.
IF Martell has improved his defense from last year.
IF Greg becomes the defensive intimidator that we think he can be.
IF Nic becomes a consistent contributor so we can keep him on the court enough to benefit from his defensive ability, and if he continues to improve as a defender.
IF LMA bulks up a little more and becomes a better interior defender.
IF Greg becomes an offensive force, which helps our defense by getting opponents in foul trouble and wearing them out trying to stop him on that end of the court.
IF Rudy improves as a defender as he gets more used to the NBA.
IF Sergio takes another step forward defensively next year.
That’s a lot of IFs. It’s a pretty good bet that some of them will come true, and actually fairly reasonable to think that enough will come true to change us from a poor/mediocre defensive team into a solid or even good one. I doubt Brandon or LMA will ever be great defenders, but if we are very good at three positions and adequate at two, you’ve got a good defensive team, especially if one of your very good players is a shot-blocking center.

Ray Allen isn't a great defender.
But surrounded by those players, it’s a great defense.
If Bayless, Batum, and Oden are good defensively, our team will be as well. LMA has good perimeter defense as well… does a great job shadowing.

I was really surprised how well he defended Davis after they switched on pick-n-rolls in the OT/2nd OT the other night. LMA played a lot of minutes against LA, and over that span at the very end he guarded Baron pretty well (maybe it was just compared with the defense our PGs were playing on him). Blake on ZBo after the switch was another story and Davis lit us up too, but LMA held up pretty well for those 4-5 possessions in a row that Davis tried to go at him 1-on-1.
