Breaking News: Brandon Roy's Injured Finger

X-Rays were taken on Brandon Roy's finger after Friday's game against the Clippers.  Read my earlier description of his injured finger here.

According to team sources, the X-Rays found a torn tendon in Brandon's right pinkie.  He will be fitted with a splint.

He is not expected to miss any games.

That sounds like a dodged bullet to me.  It will be interesting to see if this affects his jumper which is as rainy as it has ever been.

I don't know about that

Sure, this means no cast and therefore no missed games. But I’m thinking the splint will affect Roy’s play, and that he may be wearing it for a long time.

Rainy?

Don’t you mean snowy?

No missed games is good news

gotta be happy about that, and the snow, cause it isn’t rain.

Thanks for the easy schedual NBA

everyone is hurt cuz they barely had any days off to rest.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

I've torn ligaments + broken my pinky before.

Mine was a pretty serious case and I was pretty okay within a week or two. Not like I could compare, but a torn ligament in a pinky is not that big a deal. Yeah, a splint is pretty inconvenient, and I wasn’t shooting hoops at the time so I couldn’t give any insight to his jumper, but I know it kept me out of playing receiver for a football game.

Well...

I was the Kicker and Tight End my team, and for the game where I had my hand clubbed, I just was kicking.

So then kickoff rolled around, the other team received it, took it back, then fumbled it right in front of me. Stupidly, I went in head first for the loose ball and the already broken pinky got spiked by some other player… very VERY painful for about 2 weeks, then I started taking off the wrap and flexing it a little… it did get better eventually. But even now I treat my pinky a little gingerly and it still has a little bend to it. I think broken pinkies are massively understated injuries after experiencing one myself.

I mean, I’m a Freshman in high school playing in a Freshman game, Brandon Roy is quite tougher than me of course… but to say it shouldn’t or wouldn’t bother him would be a stretch for sure.

Ligament ≠ tendon

A ligament connects a bone with a bone (over a joint). A tendon connects a muscle to a bone. The difference sounds academic, but it’s not unimportant albeit the immediate treatment should be the same to just inactivate and support the finger (splint, taping to the ring finger). I believe when the Blazers say Brandon has torn a tendon, they know what they are saying. Like I posted above, Kobe has torn a ligament, and was advised to get surgery at some point to fix it since that is not healing well by itself and can cause the finger to stand out (which Kobe surprisingly has declined so far).

Ohhh you're right

Sorry, I misread. I thought I saw ligament and jumped in to preach my experiences. I did know the different previously, I just misread. My bad.

It depends on the % of tear

When I shredded my knee in 89, they had to open
up the knee (8" scar) and remove 1/3 of the patellar
tendon to graft into the ACL. At the time, Dr. Carlson
(Bend orthopedist) was on the leading edge of knee
surgery (US Olympic Ski team orthopedist).
Finger tendons are many, due to the lack of muscle
fibers in the hands & feet. This means that most of the
connective tissue are tendons or ligaments. A partial
tear of a tendon in a finger could be a 15 to 30 % tear and
still be able to function (with pain/ limited mobility).
I took Human Anatomy in college and have worked with
trainers and athletes for years. Jammed fingers and
toes are common in basketball and sometimes tendons
and ligaments tear slightly. They will tape for the time
being and reevaluate. Keep working BRoy !

It's GO time !

Sidenote:Someone has to protect our guys

we been getting hard fouls one after the other 2 injuries…LMA takedown in that LA game was brutal…Oden has to punish someone…he’s the biggest and strongest…appropriately of course..but that is part of his role…like hitting a batter on the opposing side…AND he needs to make the cutters on the other side pay once early each game….they WILL stop abusing us if we push back

poor steve has been layed out several times by picks recently

he got hit hard in the face and was holding onto his nose recently late in a game….can’t remember if it was this one or last one…fouls shots are hard after you been hit in the nose . . .there was not any evening out for those hits..

Unfortunately, the most likely candidates are playing for someone else or in college (I want Hansbrough or Patrick Patterson in round 1, or Jon Brockman in round 2). Oden has the size, but I just don’t see him as an enforcer based on his personality

Bayless has been testing the fences for weaknesses

Anybody But Hansbrough

Shav would take him to school. Hans is tough as nails and should have played a sport where only toughness matters. Not enough skill though.

Can we change this headline?

The word “Breaking” is pretty close to Brandon’ finger.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
