12/14 Junk Drawer: Snow (Yay! Yippee! Skippee!) Edition

How many inches of the white stuff does everyone have at their house? Something about these days of snow brings out the kid in me, well I'm already a kid but you get the idea.

But I've always wondered one thing: What do the Blazers do on a snow day? I can see Rudy and Sergio wearing matching sweaters going around the neighborhood singing christmas carols in spanish. I like to imagine Greg Oden sledding down The Hill that he rehabbed on all last year. I can see Coach Dean holed up in his basement inventing a new zone defense. I can see Jerryd racing the neighborhood kids and then smashing their sleds when he loses.

What do you like to do on snow days? Hot chocolate? Snowmen? And what do you think the Blazers do with a snow day?

Wow! I never, ever get to do that!

Now let me see…I am supposed to write a essay or something?

I haven’t written anything long in in quite a while…

I live in Oregon City and here at my place there is already 2.5 to 3 inches of the white stuff. No, not that stuff! SNOW!

I may be 48 years old but I still get excited by snow and I have already been out playing in it, and I intend to do it some more. Then…yep I will come back inside and have Hot Chocolate to warm up. We have Christmas music playing and I am doing my best to get in the spirit of the season.

The Blazers? I just hope nobody falls down and hurts themself… we don’t need any more injuries.

Cheers!

What I posted in my (6 minutes late) junk drawer...

Well, I’ve got nearly an inch at my house on the east side (NE 70th & Glisan) and my outside thermometer reads 25 F, with about 5mph winds… bout 15 mph gusts…

NASTY weather to walk in, and the cars around here have been having some problems too. Just went to Fred Meyer to get some gloves (they had none) so I picked up three Blazer posters instead. (A Brandon Roy Poster, a Greg Oden poster, and a duplicate of the “RISE WITH US” banner outside the Garden).

Hypothetically he would break their sleds… but I don’t think he would ever lose. Seemes a little competitive.

Car just slid down holgate right into the intersection … that was cool. Starbucks is open. So im gonna venture there first. Sledding making snow angels and probably having a gallon of chocolate milk.

Let it Snow

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we’ve no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn’t show signs of Pauseing,
And I’ve bought some corn for popping,
The lights are turned way down low,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

When we finally kiss goodnight,
How I’ll hate going out in the storm!
But if you’ll really hold me tight,
All the way home I’ll be warm.

The fire is slowly dying,
And, my dear, we’re still good-bying,
But as long as you love me so,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

snow day activity

well, in Salem its warmed up enough to melt off what snow we got. My folks live in the Silverton hills but they say its getting slushy although they got a good 6-8 inches. I was tempted to go fire up the 4 wheeler and roam around but decided to stay home and play this Age of Mythology map I’ve struggled to defeat. Later after a late lunch Im gonna curl up to my latest Ben Bova adventure— The Aftermath.

Bonzi doesnt like the snow much but Duffy had been out all morning and just came in soaking wet and covered in pine needles. That reminds me I better get some more wood stacked under the porch.

Dont forget to keep a flashlight handy and some candles ready just in case.

and a bit farther south...

No snow on the ground. No snow at all. I live at a slightly higher altitude on the edge of Eugene and there is no snow here. It snowed hard for about a half hour this morning, but none of it stuck and it hasn’t snowed again since. No rain either. Just really cold weather. I might go hike up Spencer Butte so I can experience the snow.

You guys are lucky

I’m stuck at home in 79 degree weather because the Honolulu Marathon is going on right now and it passes my apartment. I can’t go east and if I go west, the traffic coming home would take hours. I’m also half-hungover because my wife made me go to a sake, food, and wine event last night. I drank two free mojitos, five kinds of sakes, four kinds wine, ate Iron Chef Japan type food, then hung out with a bunch of gay models. Some dude from Bulgari bought me a lemon drop then we went for cigars and someone gave me a Longboard Lager. At 11:58 PM, we were sitting with Chef Masahito Ueki and I text my wife, “I gotta no more.” It’s 1:36 PM and I still haven’t showered.

We did it all

We did the $185 thing and the cigar thing after. It was all comped because it didn’t sell out and they wanted us to fill a table. They made everything sound like a big deal. They said the sake was hard to get and we would probably never have it again. The wine came from the vineyards special selection. The vineyard is owned by the son of the owner of the hotel my wife works for. The cigar was really good too. They came from a smarmy guy from NY. I think I smoked one of these. The guy from NY was wearing orange pants and said the f-word a lot.

But that Kona low probably dropped as much rain in 48 hrs. as PDX gets in 6 months. First sighting of snow up on Mauna Kea Friday morning, gone now.

by tominhawaii on Dec 14, 2008 4:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yup. Common sentiment you hear from visitors.

Then again, you can always drive 2 hrs to the West side. It rarely rains over Kona side, and there are actually sandy beaches too. Coming from Portland, I think I just kind of block out the rain mentally. And you know, at least its not 40 degrees out.

Yeah

We were told to live in Kailua when we first moved here. We went to check it out and it rained while we were over there. My wife ruled that place out and now we live in the non-rich Kahala area. I love Kailua beach though.

Still a kid when it comes to snow

Went out for a walk about 8 am when it was coming down hard. Wanted to try out my super duper cold weather gloves I bought last month. Snort. They are no better than the old knit gloves in my drawer. Walked about a half mile but turned back because the path turned into the wind and it was stinging my face. Have stayed inside most of the day only dashing out now and then to refill the bird feeders and to sweep off my front walk. It’s 3:50 and is snowing and blowing in the SW burbs.

For my first three years back in Portland, I worked at a school. Got zero snow days, zip.

I just had a look into the Suns future

Assuming Amare wants to get out of there to play for a competitive team when he becomes a free agent in either 2010 (ETO) or latest 2011, their “core” looks like this:

Dragic
Richardson (2011)/Barbosa
Tucker/Dudley
Amundson
Lopez

Bahahaha. Okay, they have cap space themselves beginning in 2010 when Shaq comes off the books, but suddenly it doesn’t look that unlikely that they could be interested in trading Nash or Amare ahead of time.

Snow?

There was a time a few years ago when I still lived in the Portland area that two inches of snow would have been something. Then I moved to the Midwest. With 8 inches of snow down, and still falling, school doesn’t even get delayed out here. Unless its a blizzard, and I mean a real blizzard, not what the weather-casters call a light dusting, no one notices out here. That, and the high temperature tomorrow is +7°F. I hope my long underwear is clean.

The weather in the NW and in CA. is having an effect here in southeastern AZ. The
during the day has been in the low 60's but the wind has been pretty ferocious and the sky is filled with pendulous, grey clouds that never give up their moisture. The locals say this is unusual. Today we went to Chiricahua National Monument, a truly amazing example of scenery in the US and a geological phenomenon. Not to mention it's history. Anyway, we decided not to hike because, at 6500 ft., the wind was so strong that it sucked the breath right out of your lungs. We'll go back, maybe in Oct., because the hikes will be spectacular.

How about 5 inches yesterday

and 13 below zero right now, with a wind chill of -30. The only positive is the ski resorts, but even then, it’s pretty cold to even ski. I clearly need another trip to Vegas to warm up. BTW I managed to win a little money in Vegas last week betting on the Wolves to cover the spread over the Nuggets….Melo’s 33 point quarter nearly lost it for me though.
