12/13 Junk Drawer: The Steve Blake Heimlich Maneuver Edition
Should Jay Jensen be carrying this picture in his wallet?
From Self Help Magazine here are some ways to prevent choking:
- Perform for yourself rather than attempting to please others.
- Set your own realistic goals that are attainable yet challenging.
- Use imagery prior to competition to review strategy and technique.
- Use positive self-talk prior to and during competition.
- Practice deep muscle relaxation exercises or meditation prior to competition.
- Use music prior to competition to help maintain focus by controlling negative thoughts.

Math experts: Can you confirm this for me?
The probability of a 92% free throw shooter going 1 for 5 is:
.08 x .08 x .08 x .08 x .92
=.0000376832 or 0.004%
If true, conclusive evidence of a Choke Job.
by Bust a Bucket on Dec 13, 2008 2:08 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
not quite correct
If the FTs are considered independent events (ie one miss doesn’t affect the next shot… which is a questionable assumption), the probobilites are as follows (using a binomial distribution):
5 for 5: 65.9% chance
4 for 5: 28.6% chance
3 for 5: 5.0% chance
2 for 5: 0.4 % chance
1 for 5: 0.02% chance
0 for 5: 0.0003% chance
If we use Blake’s career FT% of 77.8% (which is more accurate given the small sample size of this season), the probabilities are:
5 for 5: 28.5% chance
4 for 5: 40.7% chance
3 for 5: 23.2% chance
2 for 5: 6.6% chance
1 for 5: 0.94% chance
0 for 5: 0.054% chance
So, there was about a 1% chance of Blake hitting either 1 or 0 of those FTs. Pretty bad choke, but not quite as bad as your numbers. Also, Rudy shot have shot the T (on the pre-inbound foul)— Blake is not a 90% FT shooter… he was just on a hot streak to start the season. Rudy should be shooting all Technicals when he is in the game.

Thanks a bunch!
I agree that Rudy should have shot the free throw on the T.
Again, it’s Nate going to his man Steve Blake. For once, his man let him down. I don’t even know if Nate decides or the players on the floor decides who shoots those. It was bad though since Rudy has been better than Blake this season.

Blake missed it
That was the first of his four misses.
Rudy should have been shooting it.
by Bust a Bucket on Dec 13, 2008 3:49 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
ok now you are confusing me
I did not see the fourth quarter because I went to a full moon sauna with my friends, so I did not see ANY of Blake’s missed FTs.
However, I did see Dnleavy get T’d up for arguing with the refs (I think it was in the first half) and I did see Rudy step to the line to attempt the FT on that call. And I did see Rudy miss that FT. So BM Andy is correct. Rudy missed a T FT earlier.
The guys must have T-FreeThrow-itis.

it was a foul before the ball was inbounded. Whatever that’s called.

Am I crazy to think Hinrich would be a good fit?
People keep saying that he is no improvement over Blake…. but he is a better defender. His numbers looked bad last year because he was often forced to guard the 2, instead of his natural position.
I still think Bayless will be a stud in two years. Sergio and Blake aren’t going to cut it…

Hinrich is a fantastic fit
I don’t think many people think otherwise. The questions about Kirk have to do with his price tag (both in terms of contract and players it would cost us to get him).
Boomshakalaka
by jksnake99 on Dec 13, 2008 2:44 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I think he'd be good
A lot of people hate on him because he’s overpaid, but even with that contract the Blazers could bring him on within the cap. I think this is the best use for RLEC (although there would likely be more than just that involved), I think a lot of these big name FAs won’t change teams when it’s said and done, and his game is tailor made to complement Roy. Hinrich, of the PGs known to be currently available on the market, is the best choice if the Blazers are looking to upgrade now.

You are not crazy.
Defense is lacking in the teams makeup. The quickest way to make the Blazers into a solid playoff team would be to add a talented perimeter defender. The list of available defensive oriented points guards starts and ends with Kirk Hinrich.
If the Blazers add a talented defensive wing like Gerald Wallace it might not matter so much, but right now a lack of perimeter defense is the Blazers achilles heel.

The only current Blazer mentioned in FreeDarko's "The Macrophenomenal Basketball Almanac" is Joel
As a member of the all-time worst 2000 nba draft. Funny, though I don’t agree with his description.
The third player in a row to get traded on draft night, “the Vanilla Gorilla” parlayed a strong 2005-06 season into a decent-size contract with the Blazers. While not exactly a cancer, he’s never developed any kind of consistent usefulness, making him into a periodic annoyance for those fond of scouring salary situations.
Fellow 2000 guy Darius of course is also mentioned. As – oddly enough – are Khryapa and Sabonis.
And we should really trade for Gerald Wallace, who got his own (co-)chapter in this fascinating book. I predict more Blazers will make it into the second edition ;-)

The bar had closed, he walks up the door, I’m like
“Joel you can’t come in, but you are a very under appreciated and important piece to this team and I think you are proving people wrong by flying under their radar’s and putting up important numbers off the bench! To hell with the national press you are one of the best big players to come out of the 2000 draft and by mentoring my little kit project mr. oden I also think of you as a teacher and un-sung hero who sings baritone bass in my heavenly choir of the Pinwheel”.

What up Boys and Girls! So, I am going to go to a Neighborhood party tonight
You know the type? Your mom’s cul-de-sac in Lake Oswego has their annual “Traveling Christmas ‘get drunk and not drive’ party” and you get to sample various adult beverages whilst snacking on numerous cheese and cracker platters.
So we’ll see how that goes. I hope some has Pendleton Hot Toddy’s.
Then it’s over to the east side and some shindig where there are supposed to be way to many ladies at and they need some guys to come over. Giggity Giggity. So, Do you have a favorite hot adult-beverage or favorite holiday non-alky drink? Apple Cider anyone? I know I won’t be driving home tonight, All-Right.
-
So I had to work today,BOOO! And other Saturday workers? Do you like to make random bets about stuff at your job too? Well my co-worker put the Over/Under on foot traffic through our door a 4 people the entire 4 hour shift. This is a fair assumption that on this weekend before Christmas people would have better things to do then buy granite counter tops and wholesale flooring.
The bet was for Breakfast. I accepted. Half way through the day I was getting worried because we had only had one person come in so far. But then, just like snow slowly starts to fall before it begins falling hard, just like the losses pile up before the wins become common place, the people came and they came in droves.
I win again, I always do.Looks like I’ll be eating for free time the next time we work a Saturday together, may it be a long time before we suffer another home loss too.
Do you have a favorite, “I perhaps stayed up too late and need something quick, greasy and delicious to eat” before work breakfast? I only say that because, honestly, who eats oatmeal after a long night of trying to forget about being on the loosing side of a double over-time loss at home?

Its looking like yet another day of all the Western Big 9 winning
Utah has a 10 point lead over the Dwight Howard-less Magic (he hurt his knee, and is missing the first game of his career… and it just had to be against our division rival— thanks a lot, Superman).
Denver has a 14 point lead at home against Golden State.
OKC is somehow tied @ Dallas in the 4th quarter, but I don’t think anybody expects the Thunder to pull that one out.
Sigh.

I SHOULD hope they win those games
Since I argued that it isn’t 100% evil to hope the Lakers beat the Nuggets or Suns or Mavs if we are in a tight playoff race with those teams, but… man, I hate those Thunder and their owner and what they did.
I would love love love love if they became ‘the worst team of all time’. I’d schadenfreude my pants if that happened. The worst record in a year where they could/should steal at least a FEW wins from the Wolves, Grizz, name-your-scrub-team, would be delightful.
Of course, if it becomes April and it’s tight for the 8th spot, I’ll be glad the Thunder won those games (should they win), but till then I never want them to win ever again.

ok, no more excuses...here it is......
First, you can buy pie shells from the store or you can home make them.
and if you’re going to do all the work to make pasti, you should always make 2 pie plates. So you want 2 pie shells…………
and then you do this:
Hamburger 1.5 lbs
Potatoes 4 (regular size ones) (alternate: use 8-10 of those small red potatoes instead)
Carrots 4 (Large Costco size carrots. If you buy the slightly smaller walmart carrots, I’d go with 6-8)
Turnip—1
Onion powder (this is optional, but I think it really brings out the flavor. Try one without and one with maybe, and see what you like better)
Rutabega—1
Salt and paper—shake a little bit in. It helps bring out the flavor.
Aight, then just slap that stuff into your pie shells and whip it in the oven—both pie plates. Preheat the oven to 350 and leave it in for about an hour.
And voila! You have Finnish Pasti.
Everyone makes it slightly different, so feel free to take out what you don’t want and add other stuff if you wish.
I am a white boy who should have been a mexican, so I always add tortillas, rice, beans, cheese, lol all kinds of stuff after the fact, but most people just eat it plain.
Alright, so there ya’ go. I’ll email this to you and Ann as well.
Bon a petite!

That brings back memories
My granddad was one of them Finns from upper Michigan who took pasties to the copper mines, so I grew up eating these concoctions. Ours were usually made with chopped up beef (not hamburger), onions, rutabagas and potatoes and then wrapped up in the pie crust so it was more like a turnover.

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we’ve no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
It doesn’t show signs of Pauseping,
And I’ve bought some corn for popping,
The lights are turned way down low,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
When we finally kiss goodnight,
How I’ll hate going out in the storm!
But if you’ll really hold me tight,
All the way home I’ll be warm.
The fire is slowly dying,
And, my dear, we’re still good-bying,
But as long as you love me so,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
