Jazz vs Blazers - Onsite report - The humiliation begins

!@#$&(&!(@)#^$)!@#^$!@)#$^!@#$^&

and

@#$%

Okay, now that that's out of my system.   Boy did those Blazers make the Jazz look good.  I think my gf said it best when she said "the blazers must be really tired, Greg Oden looks energetic!"

Monday I will be baking 300 cookies, wearing PINK fluffy slippers, an apron with the jazz logo, and I will be serving it to each and everyone of the 70-100 employees we have.  BAH

The Cheerleaders:

I've got to admit, their skill level is low but their outfits weren't bad.   They had this colorful sparkly one that if they added wings, they'd be looking like faeries.  Another black outfit with a white undershirt was rather cute.  I wasn't completely into the shorts as I'm definitely a skirt man, but not bad.

The Pregame:

Watched Sergio take about 100 shots.   Watched him miss 50-60% of them.  His shots looked flat and some with arcs would hit the rim.  He signed autographs before he headed into the tunnel.   A lot of YOUNG blazer fans at the games.  Many were in full on jersey mode.  I may need to break down and get a jersey so I can fly my teams colors.

The warmup involved the blazers making about 20% of their shots.   Possibly not a good sign, but I had a good vibe.  Determined to win because, you know... my blazers wouldn't let me down... right?  I refused to let any negativity into it my thinking.

Oden:

I watched Oden a lot tonight so I'll drop it all here.  During warm ups he looked like he belonged. I say this not in how he practiced, but how he stood and walked and his body language.   He didn't look like some drooped over kid that was wondering what he was doing there, but like a guy that was supposed to be on the court.   I find that to be a good thing... but...

During warm-up he'd grab the ball and hand it off to someone else instead of shooting multiple times.  MULTIPLE times.   He probably had half as many shots as everyone else.   His shots also had the feel of "I'm not going to invest in this so that if I miss it's because I didn't really try".   I've played like that before and it NEVER ends well.   If you know what I'm talking about, that's what I saw from his shots in practice.   He never dunked.  He banked a few, and he had some flat hook shots that would make those Zamboni drivers proud.  I winced.   This guy looks like he has ZERO offense.  He also had zero energy.

During the game, this ugliness continued.   Seriously, I think I have better form and feel than Greg Oden does and I suck.  He doesn't seem to have the feel for where the basket it.  At ALL.  I can hook shots in because I KNOW where the basket is.  No I couldn't shoot blind folded all the time and make them, but I could make a few after I play on a basket a little bit.  Greg doesn't have this feel at all.   He has like -10 to that skill.  Really, when I see greg I imagine a character in WOW with resurection sickness.   -75% to all stats.

Greg helps out the team in a lot of ways.  He also hurts the team in a lot of ways.  My gf was screaming for Pryz to be in.  Normally I feel that greg helps out in ways that don't show up in the stats other than a win, but this game, I saw something maybe twice.

Overall I don't like Greg's body language.  It's improved, but he looks like he's just afraid to invest himself because he's afraid he'll fail.  I don't like how he feels, to me, isolated from his team out there.  I have a strong feeling that someone needs to kick his freaking asphalt and tell him to suck it up.  I felt for the guy earlier, but I'm sorry... at some point you need to freaking deal and someone should tell him that.  Have fun, act like you want to be there, act like you care about the shots instead of not committing to them.  He's practicing how NOT to do it, and that's not good.

Obviously there are coaches who know more than I do.  This is simply what I saw and the "vibe" I got from watching him.

Game Time:

The blazers came out with some energy.  It didn't last longer than the 1st quarter and maybe not even that long.  They also came out with holes in their defense large enough to drive the titanic through without hitting a berg.  Last time they came to town I complained about the lack of help defense and directing players into others.  this game the jazz would just pass to wide open spots so that defense wouldn't have helped because the blazers couldn't find their man with GPS attached to their hineys and big flashing arrows pointing to them.

The crowd was decently loud AND it didn't sound canned or amplified.  Quieter than the last game, but the cheers sounded real.  Very much like a blazer crowd in that they want their team to win.   Fans would jump up shouting "YES!!!"   on the good plays and were very involved.

Their mascot, as much as I don't like him, is there, not for the kiddies, but to AMP up that crowd.  The blazer mascot should take some notes.   I swear that Blaze is only there for the kids and thus he is a buzz kill of mine.

I laughed at Sergio and Rudy jumping around like mexican jumping beans at the top of the key and then "ZIP" the pass goes between them right under the basket for a dunk.   At that point I suspected that the blazers would not be making a come back.

The blazers hold the ball too long and miss WIDE open opportunities for nice passes.   I don't know if you can see it on tv, but many times the blazers would be running down and a man would be open or semi open.  A quick pass and you have an easy bucket.  Instead the blazers let the defense settle in and pass the ball 20 times and suddenly it was ten times harder to score.

Additionally, with 2 minutes left and down by nine you TAKE that quick 3pt shot or inside shot when you're open.  Instead the blazers would keep passing.  You just do NOT have the clock time to do that.   In that situation it's time to gamble a little because if you play it safe, you're going to lose.

A thought crossed my mind that the "7 seconds or less" Sun shooting rules might need to be applied to this team.  This team needs to know when to gamble and when to get the ball moving QUICKLY and when to recognize you're open for a good shot.    rudy passed up a wide open three to pass to sergio who was a little more covered and NOT as good shooting the three.  Passing for the sake of passing is dumb.

A guy commented behind me:  "The blazers only have one good player, and that's Roy."   Watching this game only, I really can't argue.  Aldridge got his points, had nice finesse shots, but he does not dominate.  I suspect that bumping him around a bit would really mess with his game.

Sergio and Greg kept getting balls stripped from their hands.  When you're tired you react slower and when you're not (jazz) things can seem like they're in slow motion and thus the game becomes easy because you can be insanely precise.

The Fouls:

I'm not going to get too down on the refs here.  That said, there were some major phantom fouls at the beginning of the game against the blazers.   The blazers were being aggressive, it was just flat out bad calls.

The Flagrant on Frye looked like he simply stuck his hand up and got ball and the guy collapsed under it.   You would probably see better than I would with the 20 replays I'm sure you got.

The mascot shined the refs shoes, played with them, high fived them and fisted fived them (what is that called anyway?).   Home cooking?  Possibly, but the blazers didn't come to play either.  Yeah, we got bad calls, but the blazers could have played to reverse that and they didn't.

The blazer fans:

Saw quite a few of them.   One across the aisle 4 up front.  The cam flashing around snagged blazer jerseys jumping into the picture at least twice and probably more as I wasn't paying attention to the cam all the times.   Highlight of the game was when a girl groped her gf and attempted to flash the crowd but couldn't get her shirt up because it was too tight.

Place wasn't swarming with blazer fans, but you could hear clapping and cheers and I'm sure each section had at least five to ten.   I think that's pretty good.  also, lots of empty seats.

The Summary:

Cheerleaders still suck at stunts but looked good with their outfits.  Definite upgrades.

Blaze should take serious notes and learn how to pump up the crowd.

Blazers played like a  team that's been in 7 different cities in the past 12 days.  If you don't travel a lot, you have no idea what that's like.  I've done enough traveling to know I'd be hating life.

I'm going to be ribbed about this bet for a long long long time.  My team let me down and I'm a bit ticked despite reasons that I can understand it happening.   I did NOT want to lose this bet.

I'm bummed.  I was hoping my blazers would step up.  They've had a harsh schedule, but I was still hoping for some love and I feel like they let me down.  Obviously they don't know me from that brown stain in my neighbors yard, but seriously that's how I feel.

Hopefully the blazers can wake up for the clipper game because right now they look like they need a week off and they can't have it.   That clipper game will be 8 games in 13 days and 7 different cities and 8 different flights to cities.  Just so you all know.  I'm not super hopeful they'll do well that game either.  I should say, that I won't be surprised if they lose.   That team is TIRED.

Cause he'll get better

The Blazers can make the playoffs with him in the starting unit. Once he gets better, calms down, and gets in shape, they’ll be championship quality (maybe add a FA too). That happens faster if he starts. It’s immediate risk versus long term gain. It’s sort of like why it’s smart to quit smoking. It doesn’t make you feel good right away, but you don’t die in thirty years.

I think that's where some of my frustration comes from too

because I was expecting the blazers to be a little further in some areas of that department. Some nights they are, and others… wow are they not. I just have to bite my tongue and relax a little and enjoy. Hard to do in pink fluffy slippers though.

In fairness to greg

He also has games where he plays well. Defensively he’ll change the game like crazy. This was NOT one of the games and Oden should have been yanked earlier. I somewhat suspect that the coaches are “showing trust”. You take the punches and learn how to dodge them so they stop hitting you.

This game was pretty bad on the defensive end though. His offensive end is usually pretty ugly, but I like his defense and I like when teh team doesn’t force it to him.

Championship Road Still Runs Through Greg...Just Not This Year

The Blazers are a much-improved team from last year, which makes people want to do things to win now. That is a mistake. The Blazers are making decisions with a longer-run view, and if a higher playoff seed results, that’s just a bonus. The Blazers are a playoff team in the way that the early eighties Blazers were. Dangerous, but not a championship contender. (and really, no one outside of the Lakers, Celtics, and maybe Cleveland is a championship contender this year)

Moves will not be made this year that sacrifice the future of this team, which I believe is as a championship contender in a few years. For example,

1. The Blazers are not going to make a trade to try to make a run this season at the expense of the longer-term outlook. If a trade is made, it serves BOTH purposes.

2. The Blazers are not going to force Martell to come back from his injury early (again), because they aren’t in it to win it all this year, and need him long term.

-and- (with regard to your comment on Oden)

3. The Blazers will not waste another year of Oden’s development by sitting him simply because right NOW he is not as good as Przybilla on the court. They need Greg to be a consistent (and dominating) defensive presence and a passable to good offensive threat down the road to realize the dream of winning a championship. He is neither right now, but they aren’t going to win a championship this year, anyway, so the priority has to be his DEVELOPMENT. Greg (current performance notwithstanding) has all the tools to be a Championship center, along with the other “BIG THREE” players (I still think Rudy and Roy end up being the starting SF/SG or SG/PG combination down the road, too, but I think that depends on whether we go after a stud PG or SF in the market this year.)

Remember guys, no one expects this team to be more than a six seed in the playoffs, and I still think that’s about where they end up. No way the Jazz, when healthy, fall behind Portland, and Denver is much-improved, too. But that won’t always be the case. For it to change, our players need to grow, particularly those with unrealized potential. That means Greg, and, when he returns, Martell. Both of those guys develop, and we really only have ONE hole in the starting lineup, and that’s PG. (And we need a stronger bruiser-type defensive PF backup, too, but those are easier to come by.)

Let Greg play…let Greg play.

I turned off the mess before it was a mess, but I must ask: why does this not surprise me?

Rudy shot terribly last night. It was a good idea to pass.

YOU TURNED OFF THE GAME?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! That’s lame, man. If you’re going to be riding the highs, stick around for the lows. At least you would know the answer to these bad questions you keep asking.

some games aren't worth watching

Honestly, I had the urge to leave this game because I was simmering at the play, the defense, the inability to get some offense in, and the fact that I’m not fond of hearing the other team cheer. I stayed though and sucked it up. If I were home, i might have turned it off too. If nothing is changing in the style of the play, you know the ending and you know what the team did wrong. It was pretty consistent except that Oden was starting to look energetic besides the rest of the blazers.

and at the end of the season, I’m always mad that I don’t have more games to watch. I don’t blame you for wanting to leave, but you didn’t. That’s a big difference.

Maybe you just didn’t want the Jazz fans to see you perturbed. It doesn’t matter what your motivation.

Nah, bets are pride things sometimes. Make it, and own it.

Continue to escalate your bets each time you lose. If you can bank roll that for another five years, you’ll be a rich man. Guaranteed.

Blazers = Fatigued

Outside of Roy and Aldridge, no one was on.

This Utah game was essentially the end of our brutal beginning, coming on the heels of that 5 game roader and the one game at home.

These guys flat out looked tired to me. That’s what playing every other day and travelling non-stop will do.

We’re not as bad as we looked last night… we just need some extended home time and some days off.

very tired

I really think our rookies are hitting the wall already….especially Oden. Rudy has said in interviews that with the NBA schedule, some nights he just doesn’t have his legs. If Rudy is having trouble, I can only imagine how difficult it has to be for a guy who hasn’t played ball in a year and is coming off of major surgery. I just hope now that the schedule is easing up a little, that these guys will start to get their legs back and get their second wind. Not to mention the fact that while they play at home (10 of the next 12) they can feed off the crowd’s energy, which should be very helpful

The reasons

1. Utah is a better team (offensively better and defensively way better)
2. Utah had a better game plan (took Blazers out of their offense with pressure defense and the Blazers had no answer)
3. You usually never beat good teams on their home floor
4.Live by the 3 die by the 3..
5.poor transition defense (again)
6. Utah has a great coach…..he makes adjustments during the course of the game
7. The unusual scene of why do young guys play the game like old men? (even when they are deemed fresh… I can’t buy the fatigue factor even though it may be a good excuse….Roy should be the only one tired…their killing this guy)
8.Portland continues to have the same offensive plan…go to a spot and wait for the ball….or let LA and Roy go one on one,two or three (the better teams run a motion offense that keeps the defense honest)

I think it is reasonable to say that Portland has weaknesses and good teams take advantage….I will still fall back on basic fundamentals and defense as areas of concern….they have shown little improvement in defense and until they can adopt it as a way of life, they will get beat by good teams (and even some bad teams)…..Also very lost in the transition game… both offense and defense

It's all about defense......

by 67 on Dec 12, 2008 9:17 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I've seen improvement on defense

on some games earlier, but that seems to have vanished.

I’ve seen portland play awesome motion offense with passing, and the ability to take advantage of the situation.

The way I’ve seen portland play, I’d say they are a better team than the jazz. The way portland played this game… they looked like a bunch of high schoolers playing the college kids.

I have to admit I’m a bit frustrated that the blazers don’t seem to be able to be consistent with their offense and defense. I’m also frustrated that only Roy seems to be able to break down the defense of other teams. We need other players that can do that.

I admit that watching this game, that I saw a team that I thought “this needs to change if this team really wants to win”.

It was also one game. Flying around so much DOES effect you. I’ll give them some leeway here, but I’m still in the category that a trade needs to happen for a veteran. We have players that could be better if we cleared some playing time. I feel we’re too diluted.

Then again, this was one game and so I’ll stay patient and watch. Definitely not one of the better blazer games though.

Yes

I hardly ever comment based on one game…..it usually is an accumulation of thoughts on many (including last year)……When I see the same things over and over, it leaves me with a general conclusion that this happens enough to be a concern…it can be picked apart by a singular event or two, but usually a trend or sum of averages develops….Of course, it is still based on my opinion and even if I’m correct doesn’t mean it needs to be etched in stone….It’s a young team, a long season, and they have exhibited enough game that leads you to believe they can overcome some of these deficiencies

It's all about defense......

Exactly:

“8.Portland continues to have the same offensive plan…go to a spot and wait for the ball….or let LA and Roy go one on one,two or three (the better teams run a motion offense that keeps the defense honest)”

Please, please, please: get some motion in the offense. Run, run, run defenders into screens and freaking pass the ball! Maybe I’m old school (grew up watching Ralph Miller’s teams at OSU and, later, the 77 Blazers). There was constant motion and it resulted in many easy baskets. About the only guy on the current team that is good at this is Rudy. As it stands now, we’re back to “give it to Sheed on the low block and stand around and watch.” We’ve had more than enough of that.

right on

Utah runs plays, the Blazers do not seem to run as many plays. Other than setting picks or kick-in, kick-out.

Utah is aware of the location of all the players on the court. Batum got yanked early in the 2nd half because he totally lost track of someone who got loose for an easy layup. All the back-door cuts were sad, but true.

Last night the Blazers died by the 3.

I think that, when they have time to have some practices, that will be helpful. Video of this game will make the players ill, but they will learn from it. – Elgin

I agree. It looks like the Spaniards are ready to do some fast-breaking, but overall the team doesn’t seem to want to pursue any quick baskets – instead they favor treating each possession like gold.

Very Spurs-like, so you can’t argue with it. But I wonder if the only reason they never fast-break is that they don’t generate enough turnovers from the other team (not quite what they will be defensively, yet). – Elgin

Frye's flagrant

Yeah they showed it once on replay on tv. It was clear that he got 95% ball with maybe some wrist conact but then Harppings arms crumpled into Fyre’s outstreched arms allowing it to look like a head shot. That was mastererful flopping on the offensive end. But at the very least Fyre is doing his part to lose the “soft” label.

That was my thought when I saw it live and then replayed on the screen

my first reaction was “YIKES! GO FRYE!!!” then I saw Frye apologizing for it. I went “awe man, this is frye, that was totally innocent and must have just looked bad”. then I saw the “big” (my god it’s small) screen and it looked like the guy lept into Frye’s non-moving hand.

Is appears that Roy has a bit of the Kobe syndrome

I don’t mean that in a negative way. When Roy scores 30 points we lose. Our teams strength is a balanced attack that comes at you from all angles. When Roy is getting his 22 point with 5-7 assists we are a much more dangerous team. This is not on Roy, our other players were clunking open shots.

I'm a little confused by your tactics

with a white Blazers shirt and a backwards red hat, giving the refs some first-class grief?

That guy caught my eye. I thought, “What a brave man to do something like that in SLC”. – Elgin

Nope, not me.

I was in the section where the four blazers fans in jersey’s was in but further back. They were up front facing the blazer bench about five seats in and had Rudy, Joel, and a couple of other jerseys that I don’t remember right now. Two guys and two girls. I was about twenty more seats back. I was also low key this game in dress, but actually louder in cheering. I also screamed “SHOOT IT!!!” a couple of times.

They were killing me with that dribbling and passing.

Greg Oden, where posters happen.

PS.

Thanks for the excellent report. Very sorry to hear about the pink fuzzy slippers. I hope you are able to exact some revenge in the near future to even the score. – Elgin
