Throwing Some Free Agent Money Around + Poll
There has been analysis after analysis after overanalysis after urinalysis on this site about who we should trade for, who we should sign, or if we should just stand pat with our roster. Small forward and Point guard are the two positions brought up the most. However, I'm not sure that is the best course of action. A few thoughts....
Too many people seem to think that point guards who can drive past anyone at will, lock-down defend, nail three pointers, and average 10 assists a game, can be found at the nearest Walgreens. For us to get one of those all-stars (because that's what I just described) would be no easy task. I obviously wish we could have one of those types of players, but I can guarentee our roster would have to change more than just dumping Raef, Travis, and a 2nd rounder to get one. Besides, what GM would want to give up that type of player, unless that player was a headcase like Marbury? Point guard is the hardest position to play. Blake is ok, but I yearn for a more talented PG...one who can play better defense on the perimeter.
I think we are fine at small forward. I really believe Martell is the man for the job, and Batum will be in a few years if Martell doesn't get it done.
We're fine at center...nuff said.
We're fine at shooting guard. Again, nuff said.
The power forward position is what I'd like to address. I'm very happy with LMA, with the exception of his tendency to float away from the basket and not get many rebounds. He is young, is a major talent, and currently has a very nice salary considering what he's worth to our team. I'm in no hurry to see him go at all. Also of note, I'm disgusted with our backup power forwards. They are simply inadequate in my opinion. God Bless Channing Frye, Travis Outlaw, Ike Diogu, and RLEC, but they all have one major thing in common...They are consistantly inconsistant and can not be relied on. Channing Frye had 6 good games last year, and if it weren't for the last week of the season, he would have only had about one or two real standout performances. He has been less than impressive so far this season. Diogu simply isn't athletic enough. Outlaw seems to take one step forward and one step back. So what to do?
The question I have BEdgers, is whether or not you think it would be more beneficial to gain a star point guard at the expense of losing LMA in a trade to get one, or do you think it would be better to stick with LMA? My thought is if we trade for a really good point guard like a Tony Parker, we could use some of the potential free agent money we are going to have to sign someone like Okur from Utah. This is just one example I suppose, but unless we are willing to make a trade that probably involves LMA, Outlaw, and RLEC, and maybe Sergio, we won't get the type of pg people are clamoring for; that is, unless you believe that person is Bayless, which only time will tell.
Could we realistically get a Tony Parker like player, and sign someone like Okur? Heck, I'm tired of Okur always having the Blazer's number everytime we play the Jazz. The guy has great shooting range, and has been an all-star. None of our current power forwards can say they've ever been an NBA all-star.
1st Unit: PG-Parker, SG-Roy, C-Oden, PF-Okur, SF-Webster
2nd Unit: PG-Bayless, SG Rudy, C- Przybilla, PF-Freeland, SF Batum
We could eventually have 4 all-stars in our starting 5.

if oden was already an offensive beast i would have voted to trade for an all-star caliber pg, but he's not.
LMA is our best scoring big man, and his defense has really gotten better this year. it’s too early to give him up for anything less than chris paul or deron williams.
Yeah, the sad part is that we should be talking about trading Oden, not LMA
If we could get a All-Star PG (Parker or Harris) for Oden and keep Pryz (our best center currently) and LMA, we’d be better off.
Years from now, who knows.
Let's see what he looks like when he gets some wind
Next year, I think, will be Oden’s first year back.
I'm a really really ridiculously good looking orange mocha frappaccino drinking manhammer sandwich
In a ten man rotation
We appear to have 3 weak spots right now.
Backup PF.
Starting PG.
Starting SF.
Ideally, you would like your starters to be in the top 20 or better at their position, and your backups to be in the top 45-50 or better at their position.
At PG, we are three deep in backups. None of them have yet demonstrated that they are a top 20 PG. We have at least 2 in the top 45, and I’ll include Bayless as a third, if he could get the minutes.
At SF, we are three deep in backups. Nic is going through a rough spell right now, but by next year, at least, he’ll be in the top 45, along with Martell and Travis, assuming they all get the chance to play enough somewhere.
At PF, LMA is in the top 20, but we don’t have a top 45 backup.
The problem with your proposal is we are already thin at PF, and Okur is not going to be better than LMA on our timeline. So while it certainly would resolve the PG situation, it weakens us at PF. Maybe KP can draft a backup PF. I am not persuaded that the guys you want would be available even with giving up LMA, unless we are also going to throw in Rudy plus more.
You are absolutely 100% correct on one point that seems to be little recognized around here sometimes. That is that any free agent who can play is a potential pickup for KP. It is wrong to say, “Oh, we don’t want a PF because we have one already.” It is entirely possible that, perhaps on draft day, perhaps later, KP makes a blockbuster trade which leaves us with a big hole in our roster, one which he will fill by signing a free agent.
You have to give to get. It is not beyond the realm of possibility to give up LMA, Rudy, Joel, or any of our PG/SF collection. None of them are untouchable — the draft, our cap space, and our collection of young talent all make it very feasible to plug any holes that they leave behind if they go. But obviously, if you give up LMA and/or Rudy and/or Joel, you would be expecting to get something pretty good in return.
I’m assuming Greg will turn the corner in a month or three. Despite his struggles, I still think he is untouchable, and Brandon is untouchable unless we’re getting Chris Paul or LeBron. I don’t think there are any other players out there that would induce KP to give up Brandon, and even Paul is debatable — KP has built this team around Brandon Roy, and rightly so. But everyone else on our roster could be traded if the right deal came along.

Says it all. We have talent and depth, but right now we have three spots that could be improved. The hope of course is that Webster can fill the hole at SF when he returns, but I doubt we’ll know that until 3/4’s of the way through the season since he will have missed 1/2 of it, and it will take another 1/4 to see his game. While we wait, we know that backup PF and starting PG are clearly points of weakness. I think Outlaw and Frye are getting close to their “ceilings”. Blake is also at his ceiling and Sergio is still time away from being a #1 PG – and we don’t know if he’ll ever get there, and Bayless is still on the bench. if Webster doesn’t move into that top 20 SF bracket, then we can probably fill that spot as well as the 2nd team PF without gutting the team. After all, if Batum improves enough to play 2nd team SF minutes, then we can deal with Frye, Outlaw, Webster, Raef’s contract, free and restricted agents, money and salary dumps, and draft picks to fill those slots. But PG will be the tough one.
My veiw is always the same. KP has essentially completed the first major step. He’s leveraged a group of misfits on a losing team into the picks and trades necessary to rebuild this team from scratch and create a solid winner that will settle in the 50-55 win per year category – and reach the playoff’s.
Now, we have the next step. And that is to leverage a talented group of young players, cap space, draft picks, money and whatever into a championship team. that can win 8 – 10 more games each year.
I wish him luck.
Tony Parker would be great.
But I find it hard to believe he’ll be leaving SA anytime soon.
hakkaa päälle !
dont trade LA
but i think we could trade one or two of are scorers and get a good if not great pg that can distribute the ball.
Keep LMA. Keep the time line unless adding Shane Battier.
I think we are fine at small forward.
TBD. We might be fine at small forward. I’m ok waiting this year to find out if we are.
Heck, I’m tired of Okur always having the Blazer’s number everytime we play the Jazz. The guy has great shooting range, and has been an all-star
Okur is the weakest All Star in recent memory not named Jamaal Magloire. He is every bit as soft as LMA and likes to jack up perimeter shots even more than Rasheed & I remember how frustrating it was to watch that.
I’m a Bayless supporter, so I want to see what he can do before we nuke this thing trading for a proven PG.
