Portland needs to do a better job

of putting pressure on the PG. Williams was able to get wherever he wanted/initiate the offense at will. If his shot was falling, it would have been ugly, but he was dropping dimes. PG play will be huge over the course of the season.

by blazeraddict on Dec 11, 2008 10:23 PM PST reply actions

I agree....

why didn’t we send another defender at Williams when he was on the perimeter? We never even tried it once.

I can't stand it

I absolutely hate it when the referees hand the game to one team or the other. Just look back at the 2 or 3 minute stretch that ended with Utah up 37-27. Horrible officiating.

Blazers may not have won anyhow. To my eyes, they pretty much looked awful. Can someone who knows this game better than I do tell me why in the world they don’t freaking move without the ball, set screens, pass effectively??? What’s with all the isolations?

YEAH

but there were a lot of phantom calls there at the beginning of the game. Don’t care about that because good teams can still win, but I was scratching my head on a number of calls and looking at the 9/10 ft for the jazz and the 0/0 for the blazers. I also noted that the only fouls were not in the act of shooting.

Greg Oden, where posters happen.

by ratbastird on Dec 11, 2008 11:01 PM PST up reply actions

No no no

not that at all. The Blazers did not play well, I acknowledge that.

I want to know why, when Sergio drove and got hammered to the floor, there wasn’t a foul on Utah. Why, when Kirilenko hacked Rudy and “stole” the ball, there was no foul on Utah? Why, when Channing blocked a shot, it was called a flagrant foul? Why, when Okur flopped like a fish out of water, was it called a foul on Greg Oden? The officiating was NOT good. Period.

Mmmk.

So, we shot poorly from three. Abysmally. There were a few iffy calls.

But let’s look on the bright side, shall we?

We know the Blazers aren’t contenders this year. While I like seeing wins, there are a few things that have to happen for the Blazers to be contenders in 2009-10 and beyond.

1. Greg Oden needs to regain his fluid athleticism. I thought he seemed a bit more in control tonight. Had a very nice play against Milsap where he forced the awkward fadeaway “blech” shot.

2. Lamarcus Aldridge needs to man up and become a tough, “take-no-crap” power forward. He disappeared tonight for two quarters, but had a few plays where he got ticked at Milsap in the fourth that i really liked.

3. We need a small forward and point guard. Less than superb play by the bench tonight. Hopefully it gets better.

The Jazz are good at home. I’m more worried about the Clips tomorrow night.

Crapper was the family name of the guy who started the company. All the toilets had the name Crapper on them.

The term “crap,” as in “take a crap,” is a back formation of the word (which started as a personal pronoun) crapper.

Choose your own loss adventure

- Ineffective PGs on both sides of the court
-LMA launching contested 20 footers and disappearing on the glass
-Over reliance on outside shooting
-Giving up transition points while not scoring any easy buckets
-Disappearance of SFs

LMA did disappear on the glass while playing 42 min, but he shot well.

I can pretty much use this as a template now.

He’s a finisher, O. Rebounder, and good help defender. Blazers actually need better man-to-man defenders and ball handlers. Wallace would not be effective with Nate as coach. He’s kind of a wild man.

too bad Roy can't play 48 minutes a night

he did play a lot of minutes tonight though. probably too many minutes.

but I gotta say Sergio and Oden looked bad tonight. Oden looked bad because he missed too many easy points and he was flat footed on defense. Our defense improved markedly whenever Pryz came into the game. Oden looked really quite awful on defense.

Sergio took some ill advised shots and played lousy defense too. I wonder if Sergio will ever be able to play decent defense. honestly. his lateral movement seems so clumsy out there, like his legs don’t work right or something. sometimes I look at his legs and they look like the legs of a desk or something. just not very mobile.

HE was not the issue on defense tonight. Deron Williams was 5 for 16 from the floor. Thats freakin 31%. Its not his fault our bigs don’t know where to be on the defensive end. Yet another example of Sergio getting blamed on defense for things he had no control over. Its sickening and it happens every other loss. Bush league excuse… pay attention to the game.

Williams didn't shoot well

but Sergio and Blake didn’t do a good job keeping him out of the lane. I’d like to see the guards at least make it somewhat difficult for the other team to get into their sets, especially a precision team like Utah. The big men did nothing to help on the pick and roll, but Williams poor shooting was more on him than anything Portland did defensively. Bad team effort on that end of the floor all around.

that’s what we do. If you want to advocate signing someone who can penetrate, fine. However, the players that we have are good shooters and need to play to their strengths.

Everybody slamming LMA for disappearing,

we need to realize that the blazers were a 2 headed beast tonight, and one head is still less developed than the other. They let Brandon torch them, but doubled LMA the rest of the way. He was best when he caught the ball and immediately went into a scoring motion, not giving the double team a chance to develop. He has evolved his game now to the point where teams have to double him to keep him from scoring at will, which is a testament to his development.

/s How come nobody is slamming Steve Blake for disappearing? He wasn’t drawing doubles was he?

well, he did disappear-- but it wasn't totally his fault

Utah double teamed him well.

I really like what I’ve seen from him the last 3 games. If he can shoot ~50% and average around 8 boards a game the rest of the season, I will gladly shut up about how he is overrated. It’s the 42% shooting, 4 rebound/game LMA who gets called out by me.

Actually to be honest, I think I was disappointed about the fact that he wasn’t doing what he did in the 4th in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. I want to see him play with more consistency in every quarter, rather than him put up Martell-like numbers in 5 minutes and then fade for the rest of the half. Perfect game to give him some minutes…We were down 16 and D WIll was all over the place. Sergio and Blake couldn’t hit a shot, couldn’t penetrate, couldn’t stop turning the ball over, couldn’t defend anyone including a hobbling D Will….Rex can at least give him the glare and a couple body bumps.

Playoff teams attack the hoop and get to the line. We have one person that does that and he can’t play all 5 positions at one time.

We can’t complain about the refs if we don’t attack the rim.

I think J-Bay will be closer to Leandro Barbosa

in that he can knock down the 3, and that will be important to this team. Ellis is among the worst 3 point shooters in the whole of the NBA. I also think Rose is miss matched with Payton. He won’t be THAT good defensively, but he’ll be a lot better at getting to the rack and finishing. Both are very good passers.

by as11osu on Dec 11, 2008 11:12 PM PST up reply actions

If you watched Bayless last year

you would have to say he’s not going to be a good defender in this league. Not only did he show poor mental abilities on the defensive end, but he has a severe lack of length (T-Rex arms). All this talk about Bayless being a good defender, or even a decent defender are pure conjecture. From what film and evidence we have on the subject right now, you’d have to conclude he’d be an average defender at best. The only reason people think he’ll be a good defender is that he’s an excellent athlete, but that rarely means anything (Travis Outlaw, Vince Carter etc…)

But I also think we need to get Bayless in there at some point. Hopefully some trades go down in the next 70 days.

by Bust a Bucket on Dec 11, 2008 11:35 PM PST up reply actions

Actually, you can be a sunk cost 18 games in

The fact that we invested a first round pick is irrelevant at this point.

The only thing that matters is whether he still has enough potential to justify continuing to keep him and develop him or not. At this point, it doesn’t matter if he is a #1 or #60 pick, or not picked at all. That’s history.

Same story with Martell.

“Sunk cost” just means you’ve already paid that price, it doesn’t matter anymore. That price has been paid, either way. You have to look forward.

Obviously, just about everyone in the whole world thinks the potential is still very high, and worth holding on to and developing. But the expression “sunk cost” is both accurate and appropriate.

It wasn’t D-Will that was killing us, it was everyone else. D-Will shot 5/16 (31%) from the floor. It was the bigs, and wings that were letting their guys run free all over the place. Blake and Sergio weren’t stellar by any means, but they weren’t the reason our defense stunk.

Brandon, Travis, Nicolas, Rudy all had multiple defensive lapses, as did Oden and Aldridge

they got tons of easy shots, from being left completely alone. I can’t even recall the exact number, but Brewer shook free of Roy at least 5 times in the first half alone. That isn’t on your PG’s.

You expect the games in Utah to be hard. But you’ve got to defend the home court. We dropped one this month, and some really hard ones coming up later. If we get out of this month with 2-3 home losses, that will be pretty good, actually, but we really need the Phoenix one.

They are also one of those teams in the battle for the 8-9 spot, and it would be good to keep some separation there. If we’re in good position once we hit mid-January, we’ll stay there. If we drop back, then we have a hill to climb.

Well, that's actually kind of fair to assume that in some ways.

Dimitris Diamantidis has been oftentimes compared to Panathinaikos teammate and backcourt partner Vassilis Spanoulis, who had enormous trouble adjusting to the NBA. Another guy who the “Octopus Man” has been compared to, Marko Jaric, has a skill set that definitely doesn’t mesh too well with American basketball.

Yet, Diamantidis is unlikely to play in the NBA, so we’ll probably never know the truth to this matter.

by AK1984 on Dec 11, 2008 11:54 PM PST up reply actions

I can't really tell how tall he is...

I just noticed he moved eerily similar to Hedo. You can be as long as you want, and be as good a passer as you are, but if you’re Hedo’s speed and you’re trying to play PG in the NBA… I’m not liking your chances.

by as11osu on Dec 11, 2008 11:57 PM PST up reply actions

Dimitris Diamantidis is definitely a tall, rangy point guard. Although he's known for his ...

marvelous defense overseas — which seems to consist heavily on gambling for steals, à la Rudy Fernandez — I definitely can see how that won’t translate too well to the NBA. Yet, in the Euroleague, Panathinaikos has a downright amazing four-guard rotation; it includes both Diamantidis and Vassilis Spanoulis, as well as University of Maryland alumni Drew Nicholas and Sarunas Jasikevicius.

living and dying

they say winning with 3pt shooting is fool’s gold
but it has been a huge part of our wins

27 of 77 attempts were threes.. over a third of our offense..

of course the Blazers would have won this game if the shots that were normally going in would have kept going in.. that’s why all teams that rely too heavily on jump shooting will never make it all the way.. you have to have enough points to rely on when shots don’t fall because at some point.. they won’t fall.. they really need to improve on scoring easy baskets with aggressiveness and stopping transition points!!

It is not fools gold, but you have to be able to score in the point and shoot the 3

Blazers rely on the 3’s to score too much when the offense stalls. No drives, no transition points, and no easy buckets. Tonight was a classic example of a team who doesn’t know how to score when the jumpshots don’t fall. The team just ends up taking more jumpshots.

BINGO, BANGO, BONGO

by blzrfan on Dec 11, 2008 11:18 PM PST up reply actions

i think they say its like fools good

because you think you have something amazing.. like the set of amazing blazer wins that has led us to a 15-9 record… but a lot of those games are won by fairly remarkable 3pt shooting stretches. And even though a win is a win.. Portland doesn’t create an offensive pace quick enough to create enough offense on so many 3 pointers..

We are a good team and there are clearly good options to move us away from this overreliance on that three while having the guns to compete beyond the arc any night. Watching the cutting and running that this Utah team can throw at you certainly demonstrates the lack of sophistication in our offense. I’m hoping this has a lot to do with the fact that the Blazers have not had the playing time together to fully gel – compared to teams like Utah and Orland who are young but have been fielded very similar units for a couple years of playoff runs now.

very consistant throughout this season is that Portland has to work harder

for their points (by taking harder shots) than their opposition. But it’s hard to call that into attention when they’ve been winning. Talent and depth tend to overshadow those kind of things i guess.

The Idaho Stampede's starting power forward, Jermareo Davidson, would be a better option than ...

Channing Frye. At this juncture, the Blazers’ backup power forward spot surely isn’t in the best of hands.

by AK1984 on Dec 11, 2008 11:28 PM PST up reply actions

I really like this dude

Stephane Lasme… you should look into him.

by as11osu on Dec 11, 2008 11:31 PM PST up reply actions

Stephane Lasme is undersized at power forward, but he's a good weakside help defender ...

and a beast at blocking shots. Lasme, however, is currently playing for KK Partizan of the Serbian League, which hilariously employes the enormous Slavko Vranes as its center. In the following YouTube clip, you should check out Vranes “stuffing” Michael Jordan; it’s flat-out amusing stuff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNbzWCxxmE0

In all seriousness, though, the Gabonese Lasme isn’t a realistic option at this point in time; thus, my attention is focused on D-League power forwards such as the previously mentioned Jermareo Davidson, as well as efficient bangs like Chris Richard and Andre Brown. Yet, with Ike Diogu and Shavlik Randolph already in the fold, either one of them should get a shot before some other guy.

by AK1984 on Dec 11, 2008 11:46 PM PST up reply actions

would never complain about Richard

That guy would automatically have a place on my 15. Its amazing he’s not in the NBA this second.

by as11osu on Dec 11, 2008 11:50 PM PST up reply actions

Uh, I mistakenly typed "efficient bangs" instead of efficient bangers in my above post.

Aside from the hilarity of my Freudian slip, an “efficient bang” most likely isn’t a good thing.

No matter that nonsense, though, Chris Richard definitely deserves to be on a NBA roster.

Good thing I stealthily avoided the slip up and went straight to the names.

Typically there are like players in college that can be had at the end of the first round, but this year I’m not really seeing any. I keep looking at how the first round might play out, and the best case scenario for this team IMO is Darren Collison. That of course makes the PG position excessively deep, but that really isn’t a horrible thing. If you’re not going to go out and get yourself an elite guy, the best you can do is get really deep and young, and hope one develops. I love Collison’s defense, offensive recognition, and 3 point shot. I think in an ideal world, he’s the one you want dealing with all the quick PG’s in the West, at least over what we have currently. I’ve also had a man crush on Austin Daye’s potential. If he keeps playing like he is, maybe he pulls a Batum and we’ll have a shot at him too.

I'm really to the point where I can't watch this mess anymore...

1. Oden is not the best center on this team. Why is he starting? It’s not even close. He has NO offensive moves. He is SLOW to move his feet and can’t defend.

2. Channing Frye needs to choose a new career. Yet he plays.

3. Sergio is taking up valuable space, blocking the guy who CAN get to the rack and finish.

4. Rudy is too scrawny to get to the rim in the NBA unless he sneaks there on a backdoor cut.

5. Travis is a shameless gunner, played out of position at the 4 because he can’t score on normal, quick 3s.

6. Batum forgot how to score.

What’s that leave? Pryz and Roy and LMA when he actually plays in position.

Meanwhile, the good teams improve through trades while we sit pat and fade once again.

I have a passion for sports, social enterprises, and innovative companies. So maybe I would buy a clinic? Found an angel investment company to help several companies? A micro-lending initiative? I don’t know. I’m actually pondering this questions:

Imagine that a spell of anonymity has been cast on you. For the rest of your life, and beyond, no one will know about the wonderful things that you are doing in this world. You can transform the lives of millions of people around the world, volunteer in your community, help the needy, yet no one will know that it was you who did these things. You can become the wealthiest person in the world, but will not be able to flaunt any of your wealth. You, and you alone, will know how good you are, how successful you are. In such a world, what would you do?

The fact that RLEC is likely to be the centerpiece

and that he likes his team doesn’t mean he’s standing pat.

It means that the deal he most wants to do is a big one using RLEC. If you are going to get a player with a salary to match RLEC, you are going to get someone good, and you may have to give up some young talent to get them.

“We like our team” does NOT mean he won’t do a deal. That’s KP language for “if you want one of our guys, it’s going to cost you something because we like them.”

I'm passionate but want to stop soon

the NBA is terrible for society. These guys make me want to puke with their $100 million contracts and cars and homes while millions are starving around the globe.

Terrible for the environment. Bad for society. Boycott the NBA.

I hope KP is not being being ignored by other GMs

in fear of being pritchslapped

If I were a GM

I’d try to sound out KP for who he wants from my team, then I’d put those guys on the “do not trade” list as soon as I got off the phone. If KP wants someone, they can play, and other GMs would be stupid to ignore his track record. Unfortunately, it could be to the Blazer’s detriment, but KP will find us some cap related gold.

And the annual KP steal of the draft award goes to...Nicolas Batum

in regards to #1:

It’s not are starting the best player. You start the #1 pick, because, well…. he was the #1 pick. If this doesn’t make any sense to you, you’re being too rational.

Let's trade Brandon Roy for Kwame Brown

because Kwame was a #1 pick and Brandon wasn’t…

Kwame was a #1 pick. So get him and start him.

by Bust a Bucket on Dec 11, 2008 11:44 PM PST up reply actions

speaking of #1s. Lakers need to sit Kobe down.

Doesn’t he realize he was passed over by 12 other teams for good reason?

when i get sad, i stop being sad & become awesome again. true story.

by Net Ranger on Dec 11, 2008 11:47 PM PST up reply actions

exactly

That’s why KP is so good about the draft. The Blazers bring in more players than any other team and do more overseas scouting. Because people like Kobe and Karl Malone are passed over in the top 10 ocassionally.

by Bust a Bucket on Dec 11, 2008 11:49 PM PST up reply actions

The why isn't Bayless playing?
You start the #1 pick, because, well…. he was the #1 pick.

by timbo on Dec 12, 2008 8:32 AM PST up reply actions

Because, well....

he was the #11 pick?

Who knows? Probably because he’s a rookie PG, and Nate is suffering emotional trauma by already playing 3 rookies, but he will NOT cross that line with a PG.

Pick & Rolls / Movement

Our pick and rolls aren’t doing much. Either the big man is not rolling to the basket or the point guard just stops (Blake) because he can’t penetrate the defense. It’s terrible to watch. I want to see the point guard attacking the rim and the big actually moving with him.

I just want to see more movement from the rest of our team. No more standing around waiting for things to happen.

We lost tonight because of lack of rebounding in the last five minutes!!!!

How many times did the ball hit the floor off of missed shots? That is just a cardinal sin in a game where you are done 10 points! Everyone should have been crashing the boards. It seemed like everyone was running away from the ball off of the rim.

by Blazer Boots on Dec 11, 2008 11:51 PM PST reply actions

yes THATS why we lost

rolls eyes. We won the rebound battle, as we do most nights.

he's right in a way

How many offensive rebounds did we get off all those misses? I saw Oden grab one, but it was one and done last five minutes of the game. Maybe we out rebounded them for the game but not when it really counted.

We count on the three way too much, thats probably our biggest problem. When we arent hitting from the arc we can forget about winning.

by lethaldose on Dec 12, 2008 12:07 AM PST up reply actions

Oh and three's

when they miss, equal long rebounds. Forget about offensive boards.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
