Junk Drawer 12/11 – Steve Nash Is Melancholy Edition

Does an upset Steve Nash mean that there is an available Steve Nash?

Bob Baum writes for the AP news that

The trading of Bell especially bothered Nash. “All I can say is that he’s my best buddy and my best friend,” Nash said after the short-handed Suns lost to the Lakers. “The guys loved him, and Boris, too. It’s hard you know. I have a hard time committing to this as a business. I take this personally.”

What does his disappointment mean for him and his future with the Suns? Would we want him? Would we not? Does this emotional outburst make him a less attractive commodity? Is this just Nash venting, and everything will be okay tomorrow? Is Kerr blowing up the Suns? Does anyone even care?

All these questions and even more strange randomness, all coming up from the posters in The Junk Drawer!

(The Junk Drawer will be back after these messages...)

The one interesting thing...

is that Steve Nash is an old veteran tha could make us way better right now…

But next year he would ALSO be SNEC, at about 13 mil, or so (I think)—so if we could find a way to get him without giving up too much, we could use him for a year, then trade his ENORMOUSLY valuable contract next year, basically extending the life of RLEC.

Just an interesting thought.

I think that if Nash is available it will not be to a Western Confrence team

At least not to a team that is a contender in the WC

FIRST (after the almighty timbo)

Oh no, wait, wrong thread ;-)

Apparently it was Raja Bell who was bothered by the new playing style of the Suns the most. From the guy who broke the news:

[Raja Bell]’s been VERY unhappy. Some thought he even asked to be traded but no one has proof of that. He hates the new team philosophies and TP…so that probably had a little to do with it. Plus, he lost a step or two and he’s been pretty inconsistent.

I hate to lose him too…but getting a really atheltic guy who can run the floor in JRich is a pretty good trade if you ask me. Dudley, well, I loved him out of Boston College, but he hasn’t done much in the NBA yet…but he’s REALLY young and REALLY cheap. So that helps. I also liked Singletary better than Dragic so that one is kind of strange as well.

Remember Dallas almost traded for Shaq, but

was unwilling to trade Dirk. I wonder if the Mavs would have made the finals and who the heck would have in the East that year. Caron Butler, Kwame Brown, Pau Gasol, Shawn Marion, Lamar Odom would all wouldn’t have been traded.

I don’t see any team taking a chance like the Kidd and Shaq trades that backfired last year, unless they are panicking like Steve Kerr is now.

If Nash could be gotted

And he wouldn’t cost sumthin’ important and was gettable for RLEC and minor pieces, then hell yeah ya get the dude. Do you know what he could do for Oden? He’d give him a perfect pass every pick n’ roll and he’d be finishing like Amare.

Same for LMA!

And he wouldn’t totally supplant Roy, there’d be enough room for two extremely unselfish leaders to dribble the ball.

Nash ain’t the MVP anymore, but he also isn’t at the Jason Kidd end either (not that Kidd is THAT bad). He’d help us a lot on offense, making a good offensive team the very best. Our defense wouldn’t get helped, but it wouldn’t get much worse.

I don’t believe Nash could be gotted, without him that team is totally lost. But obviously, if he could be had for a non-LMA/ODEN/ROY/RUDY/JOEL/BAYLESS/BATUM, I’d do it. Man, I always feel like I’m missing someone when we talk about the ‘keepers’ on the team. We got a lotta’ keepers!

by Mortimer on Dec 11, 2008 9:53 AM PST reply actions

I don't get why people think Nash would be a good fit.

He’s unhappy running a half court offense. Which is what we run. He needs to control the ball all game. Which is what Roy does, especially in the 4th. I don’t see him as a good fit at all. Plus, he doesn’t play defense any body then any of our other PGs do, including Sergio. And too expensive. Just my opinion.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 11, 2008 9:59 AM PST up reply actions

I love Nash

But I’m afraid you’re correct on all counts.

Poor, guy. He should have won a championship a couple (or was it three?) years back—when he got the broken nose in Game 1 of the Spurs series. Then there was the Donaghy Factor. That was the Suns’ year, but no one told the Hoops Gods.

Imagine what would have happened if Lady Luck hadn’t betrayed the Suns that year. The whole NBA would have copied the Suns’ 7-seconds-or-less offense. It would have been Back to The Seventies in the NBA. No more scores in the 70’s & 80’s. What fun!

Now Steve Kerr comes in and trades Marion for Shaq. That was the nail in the coffin; from that moment on, the Suns had no chance. Funny thing: Kerr was a fine player and even a fine basketball analyst. But pairing Shaq with Nash was the dumbest move imaginable. No way that could work.

"If [Roy & Aldridge] walked around in fur coats, with a bunch of glamour & glitz, we'd have a bunch of guys wearing fur coats. But they don't. They're just good guys who want to win and know how to play the right way." --Kevin Pritchard

by hurryup09 on Dec 11, 2008 10:14 AM PST up reply actions

I doubt Nate would force him to be a halfcourt team

And Nash would definitely push the tempo, which LMA and Batum and Martell and Rudy will love, and Oden will love once he is in shape.

I don’t think Roy wouldn’t love it also, after the adjustment.

And Nate would trust Nash implicitly, because he is Steve Nash. Nate always implores them to push the ball, go go go, and you wouldn’t have to tell that to Nash AND he would do it under control.

He’s also a terrific, fantastic shooter and one of the best pick n’ roll guards ever (our bread n’ butter, which Blake can hardly run). He can score in the halfcourt just as well, and our rebounding and shotblocking will enable him to run as much as he wants.

Nash isn’t Kings-era Jason Williams. He can play both full and halfcourt. He would help our already good offense immensely.

He and Roy would learn the share the ball quickly, and a PG as good as Nash would likely help Roy as well. Very true, he wouldn’t help our defense, but he wouldn’t necessarily HURT it… certainly not as much as he would help our offense. And yeah, he’s expensive, which is why I wouldn’t do it unless we were taking advantage of the Suns. No giving up our core, just RLEC and pieces.

I also think this has no chance of happening.

But Nash would certainly help us out there. A PG every team knows they gotta guard, can create his own shot and obviously for others? It’s all moot cuz it ain’t happenin’, but Nash is good.

We're the 2nd best offense for a reason!

So while it might not be bread and butter, we’re all eating sumthin’ and it’s working because our offense has been super good this season.

Blake is a decent option for us, but he is a below-average defender and can’t create his own shot. His value is a lot lower than that of Bayless.

We have Blake for veteran leadership

But Nash would replace that void.

honor rasheed wallace

by Cablinasian on Dec 11, 2008 10:41 AM PST up reply actions

If you're talking about him in regards to a Nash deal

Yeah, of course Bayless over Blake. Nash negates the point of having Blake in the starting lineup, and Bayless should be a heck of a player someday. What TYPE of heck of a player we’ll wait and see, but his potential is too high to trade away before he’s played 5 games (has he played 5 games? Maybe he has).

I’d be totally happy keeping Blake as a backup and would LIKE to keep him as the solid dependable backup PG every team wishes they had (just like every team wishes they had a Joel to be their backup C), but Blake wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me.

Blake is best for us right now, Bayless is going to be a LOT better, but getting Nash makes Blake not as best for us anymore, and Bayless remains the same… waiting, and learning (and this time, from the best). Same for Sergio.

Why is everyone so sure that Bayless will be a heck of a player ...someday

I don’t get it. I still don’t see it, myself.
A lot of people thought that of Erik Barkley too. And Telfair. And Jarrett Jack and Sergio.
Now it’s Bayless.

Why ya so sure he won't be?

Basing on what we have seen for sure: EXTREMELY athletic, great size for a PG, good shooter, very competitive, very hard worker.

Do any of those apply for Jack, Telfair, or Barkley? Nope.

Bayless has a lotta gifts and deserves the love of his POTENTIAL that he gets. There definitely hasn’t been enough evidence to say he isn’t gonna be a good player, since he hasn’t played. The tools are there though. Only time will tell, but the skeptical nature some have with Bayless doesn’t seem founded to me (at least when it regards whether he is talented or will maybe become a good player. If ya don’t think he’ll FIT, I can understand… though there ain’t any evidence to support that either).

To be perfectly honest, he is my favorite all-star in the west, not counting of course our own all-star(s). Of course I don’t like his team, the divisional rivals thing, but Denver is going to be a whole lot of fun this year. That AI-Billups trade is making Warkenstein (sp?) look good.

Still looking brother...

I got boxes and boxes of stuff, plus I got hung up watching the UFC last night. I will find the pics, it’s bugging the hell out of me that I haven’t found them yet.

By the way, doesn’t “photos of us in Cambodia” sound really dirty taken in the wrong context?

I hadn't heard that song in a long long time

I think I might still have the tape somewhere around my house, hm… might need to go find that, and somehow find a tape player too.

Euroleague hoops is going on today

Viktor Khryapa scored 14 points (on 7 for 7 shooting) as CSKA Moskow beat Panionios.

Rudy’s old team, DKV Joventut just finished playing Roma in a much hyped matchup between Ricky Rubio and Brandon Jennings (the American who chose to play in Europe over attending U. Arizona for a year). Ricky is just recently back from an injury and played just 8:34, going scoreless and handing out 3 assists, but turning the ball over 3 times. Jennings played 22:22 and had 12 points and 2 assists. Former Indiana Hoosier Bracey Wright had 18 points for DKV as they held on to win, 97-93.

Did you folks listen to KP with Sean Meagher over at Oregonlive?

KP just doesn’t get it. He needs to learn the win it all now at all costs or go home attitude pronto!

These expectations are driving me crazy

Do people not remember we were a .500 team last year? We all need to calm down and enjoy the ride.

I've heard worse stories from "friends" (school acquaintences more accurate)

that has got to be the dumbest thing i’ve ever heard though. Seriously, you take a pic and put it on myspace? wow.

From "friends" huh?

Sounds like SOMEONE learned not to dangle his balls in the deep fryer the HARD way.

AND THAT SOMEONE IS THE PRESIDENTE DE MUERTE.

Rebecca Harlow has pics of herself blowing her nose in the relish at the hot dog stations at the Rose Garden. Relish is gross though, so it’s prolly how they make relish anyways LOLZ.

That is so cool

I love teens. I worked in fast food and we would use a gross spatula on the burgers of folks we didn’t like in school. My manager would make out in the cooler with a girl that worked up front.

This is tough.

Sounds good. Love to see Nash as a Blazer. He’d add quite a bit to our team, and local hoops fans here would love to see him there now with Seattle no longer an option. I’m not holding my breath on it though. He is up there in years being part of it. I want him but don’t see the Suns sending him. If this happened when he was younger, I’d say do the deal. As much as I love Nash and he is our own here in Victoria, I do have to look at things realistically.

Nash + Nate = Hate

Because nash is not a defender.

Bovine-Americans

That 70's show:
Kelso: Red! I guess ur wondering why I'm going through your stuff. See, I needed to borrow your saw...because I need to chop down a tree...because there's something stuck in it...an animal...a rabbit...and I would like to return that rabbit to the wild so it can lay its eggs!

Red: Kelso, rabbits don't..............how the hell did a rabbit get up a tree?

Kelso: uhhhhhh Eric threw it up there.

Red: Eric threw a rabbit up a tree?

Kelso: Yeah, he's a sadistic bastard.

Nah

I just don’t think it’s very PC. It would be like having a Civil War game.

But he is right in that there is no really good next gen game

And it would be an interesting change of pace for shooters not to always play some kind of Space Marines, WWII or Special Ops.

Yeah

I’ve played that one with the word Red in it. I think it would be fun to have a battle game from the old west, I think it could be done, but we would have to be Native Americans and the bad guys would have to be the bad guys from The Outlaw Josey Wales.
