Henry Abbott about last night.
This article was written by Henry last night about BROY and the Blazer loss.
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-37-33/A-Rare-Misstep-for-Mr---Wise-Beyond-His-Years-.html
Check it out. At first glance, I was a bit discouraged in reading his piece as it seemed really negative and made me appreciate his writing less. But the one good thing I got out of it is the Update at the bottom.
Apparently the play at the end of the game with Roy pinned in the corner was not Brandon's fault, but actually a botched play where Travis was supposed to move to the middle or move somewhere other than where he did, and therefore created a broken play. Why Roy couldn't find one of the other players/ one of the other players couldn't get open for Roy is beyond me..
Do you think Roy should have still been able to be savior and this was just a tired end of 5 game road trip mistake? Or do you think Brandon got screwed with the blame as us viewers, and most fair weather followers will just see that he blew the game for us in crunch time? Does this make you want to trade Travis for being less clutch over the past few games? Share your thoughts.
PS. Hedo got his Christmas present early this year.... that garbage of a bank shot to win the game.

It was a blown play
But I never blamed BRoy for it. I blamed the coaches for doing the “prevent offense” on the last 4 offensive trips, I blamed all 5 Blazer players on the court for not going to the defensive glass after Bogan’s missed 3, (4 of them released up court which was crazy) and I blame Coach Nate for not managing his timeouts in the second half better. There were many many more reasons we lost this game, most of which didn’t have anything to do with the last play of the game.

30-9-5 don't lie.
BRoy didn’t lose us that game.
Bad perimeter defense and ridiculous 3 point shooting from the Magic lost us that game.

except that he would own the 5 missed free throws
and blame himself for the loss.

Stats lie
That’s Kobe logic, I’m sorry. “I got 30 so it’s not my fault”
Roy lost us the game just as much as everybody else on the team did. It was a 1 point game. He missed 5 free throws. 5 chances to win the game or send it into overtime and he failed all by himself. It’s okay. He’s allowed to fail every once in a while. We all are.

No love for the fanshot?
It’s hard to put blame on anyone for that game. I think what sealed it was the blown inbounds play.

I am purely posing the questions
and commenting on Abbott. I think Every player on this team is incredible in their own right, and find it very difficult to think about letting someone go in a trade. Just trying to stir the pot and bring this article to peoples attention. also I really thought the Update was interesting, because most people don’t get that info about a botched play.

I was screaming at the TV
As soon as they doubled Roy out high, he should have stretched them out as far as they’d go and Rudy or Aldridge should have flashed to the middle and had a nice, easy 4 on 3.
This is basketball 101.

I agree 100%
However this team has been trained to allow Roy the last shot. You could see they all wanted the shot to be Roy’s when he passed out of the trap the first time. It moved around a little bit but eventually Roy had to reclaim it since no one was attacking the hoop. Then he ran into the corner??? It was a crap play by the whole team, Brandon included, but he certainly did not lose us the game. The Magic shot lights out from deep and we struggled to stay with them all night.

Plenty of blame to go around
- 5 missed free throws by Roy (only Blazer to miss a free throw in the game), Blake’s turnover, bad in bounds play cost a critical timeout, Outlaw messed up last play, a critical offensive rebound for them. Brandon probably should have found something better on the last play, but it was almost a perfect storm of mistakes by a lot of players in the last couple of minutes and a lucky final shot that sealed the outcome.
Abbott is wrong however if he thinks it’s a “new idea that every once in a while Brandon Roy might make a poor decision in crunch time”. It’s not a new idea and you have to expect some crunch time mistakes as Brandon learns and earns his designation of superstar. In the Warriors game he drove the lane for a 2 point shot when we needed to go for a 3. In the New Orleans game he didn’t know he had a timeout left and shot a bad 3 pointer. In the Houston game he fouled Yao in a dumb attempt to block an extremely difficult shot with 0.8 secs left. But he won the Houston game with a great shot, and he is more responsible than anyone else for our fine record and tough wins. It’s only his 3rd year, he is still growing into greatness.
I love this Michael Jordan quote:
“I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is precisely why I succeed.”

Hmmm...
Where’s that quote from? Sounds like something Weiden + Kennedy wrote.
