LaMarcus vs Hedo - RLEC (and the "Big 3")

I have been reading a lot of posts about RLEC and the possible trades that could be devised around it. People seem to be completely dismissing the possibility of letting the contract expire and using the resulting cap-space to sign a free agent in the off-season. I think this might be the best course of action. I think KP will strongly consider signing Hedo Turkoglu who will be an unrestricted free agent. You may disagree with what follows, but just remember who said it first.

Signing Turkoglu is one of the best possible uses of RLEC.

Star-divide

Everyone wants to make sure that we receive that "major impact player" in exchange for RLEC. Yet everyone seems to be only fixated on the trade possibilities. This is somewhat understandable because the '09 free agent class is not overwhelming, but - what about Hedo Turkoglu?

I think people dismiss him for illogical reasons such as the fact that he is butt-ugly, or perhaps they are just unaware of the level of ball he has been playing over the last few seasons. Here are some facts:

He was voted Most Improved Player last season.

He is currently averaging 17+ points, 5.5 rebounds, and  4 assists per game this season.

He has shot 43% from 3pt range over his entire career.

He scored 35 points on our Blazers this season.

He is a veteran with solid playoff experience.

Turkoglu and Dwight howard run that team - (which isn't such a bad eastern conference squad.)

Now, everyone likes to talk about teams' "Big Threes." Our Big Three, in order is -    1) Brandon Roy   2) LaMarcus Aldridge - and eventually 3) Greg Oden.

Well, lets take a look at 2) LaMarcus Aldridge's stats:

He is currently averaging 15.8 points per game, 6.5 rebounds, and under two assists per game. We all love LaMarcus, and I'm not dissing him. My point is - we can bring in a player on the level of any team's "Big 3" by signing Turkoglu. And yet no one is giving him the time of day (except perhaps KP himself.)

We can debate whether the Small Forward is a position of need at all. (I personally believe that, although we have a tremendous glut of talent at the 3 spot, there is still room to use that position to take our team to the next level.) However, I don't know how anyone could simply overlook the pure numbers that this player could bring to our team.

Please - Tell me where I'm going wrong here. Thanks.

PS - I would keep Batum as the back-up :)

Hedon't

I’m sure someone has made that joke before. I’m sorry.

He’s a good shooter. He has a funny face. I think we would win more games, but I would enjoy watching the Blazers less.

by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 1, 2008 9:23 PM PST reply actions

Please explain?

Why would you enjoy watching the Blazers less if Hedo was on the team? Personally I would be all in for signing Hedo, IF it is 4 years or less, nothing more than that. I live in Central Florida and I see the Magic all the time and the style that he plays with the skill set that he brings would be perfect for this Blazers team.

Something about his face.

Nothing personal, I just don’t care for him all that much. Is that shallow of me? Probably.

I’m sorry.

Hedo

Don’t compare stats to LA, they play 2 different positions. No chance we go after him, if we sign/trade for someone it will be someone with at least conference finals experience.

by TheGreatDane17 on Dec 2, 2008 10:13 AM PST up reply actions

what?

because conf. finals experience has always been high priority for KP? why?

also, you put this as a reply to a string of comments where no one had mentioned Aldridge. did you just want to make sure you were at the top of the page? I had to read the string like three times to figure out who you were responding to… no one.

I heart taxes.

by everett on Dec 2, 2008 12:27 PM PST up reply actions

I believe

Hedo had a fair amount of conference finals experience with the Kings against the L*akers in that series that was terribly officiated a few years back.

Hedid

but I’m not sure how much longer He(can)do.

Seems like that dude has been around forever. I remember him on the Kings from way back. He might be only around 30 years old but in the NBA that is definitely on the downslope.

His face is kind of cute, isn’t it? In kind of a rugged Euro sort of way? He eyes suggest kindness, a soft heart and a depth of soul.

But no Hedon’t. Not on the Blazers anyway. We have three good SFs already.

No HeDidn't

Great “player” in that he’s well rounded — good skill set & IQ…would round out our United Nations appeal..but unless he was suddenly less $, the slight statistical uptick (while on its way down) hardly makes some of our lower stats( which are on likely the way up) ..

by LetsBlaze on Dec 2, 2008 6:34 AM PST up reply actions

interesting thought.

It’s very possible KP is eyeing him. He would make us instantly better. My concern is that he will probably command a very large contract, which could cripple our chances at upgrading the PG spot…btw I think our PG situation is fine right now and don’t think it’s a problem, but if we could get a marquee PG like Calderon or Parker we would be instant title contenders.

by dario argento on Dec 1, 2008 9:32 PM PST reply actions

Calderon

Sergio isn’t far off & is playing much better defense the Calderon

by TheGreatDane17 on Dec 2, 2008 10:15 AM PST up reply actions

Don't forget

that Hedo operates as a “point forward” at this point in his career. That should lessen the need for a marquee PG. It could be argued that this would be “too many cooks for the stew,” but I think having multiple players at different positions who can handle the ball can’t be a bad thing.

by ajinoregon on Dec 1, 2008 9:37 PM PST reply actions

like Brandon,

Hedo needs the ball in his hands to do his best work. As we have noted before, another playmaker who needs time on the ball to make things happen might not coexist that well with Roy. Not because they are selfish, but because neither of them can be effective if they need to defer to the other in those type of situations. I think that’s why Blake works well with Brandon at this point, he is not a PG that needs the ball in his hands a lot.

Now maybe Hedo could be a great spot-up shooter and take a backseat to Roy, but if you’ve watched the Magic at all over the last two seasons, you know that he really does control that offense. I’m not sure that he’d be happy in a situation where that’s not the case (i.e. Portland).

by Oppy on Dec 1, 2008 9:48 PM PST up reply actions

I think

we’d have to see how Martell comes out this season because Hedo’s role would probably be a spot up shooter. Hedo actually shoots 38% from 3-point range on his career. 43% is his fg%. If our sf’s don’t turn out as expected by the end of the year, this could be a possible solution. Though I am concerned about how much money he would require to sign.

by Jerb on Dec 1, 2008 9:48 PM PST reply actions

I stand corrected...

I looked at that wrong – he is just barely under 39% career from 3pt.

by ajinoregon on Dec 1, 2008 10:02 PM PST reply actions

No better than Martell, then

who is more likely to show further improvement.

by jscot on Dec 2, 2008 7:05 AM PST up reply actions

By contrast Steve Blake shoots...

38% for his career, and 41.5% this year from 3pt.

by ajinoregon on Dec 1, 2008 10:09 PM PST reply actions

You're definitely not the only guy lobbying for Hedo

The thing I like best about adding him is that we don’t have to give up a bloody thing. Take a look at this…

PG: Blake / Sergio / Jerryd
SG: Roy / Rudy
SF: Hedo / Martell / Batum
PF: Aldridge / Outlaw / Frye
C: Oden / Przy

The best part is we have the money to do all of that. Numbers crunch much? Yep… it certainly will be. But after they’re all Portland assets, then we can worry about trading 2 for 1 or 3 for 1, or if that case were to hold up, 6 for 1. Every other trade scenario that has us giving up the cap space, has a negative net sum. Unless the trade we do this year preserves enough money to sign a FA like Hedo (hopefully Hedo), I’m hesitant to do it.

I would have preferred to snap up Danny Granger, but since he has extended Hedo is one of the best players remaining

I would be fairly certain that he is on KP’s shortlist of potential free agents to watch. Of course he will command too much money, that’s the only scenario under which Orlando will let him go. So he is a bit too old, a bit too expensive. But still an upgrade.

What would you rather like to do: See Hedo take the big contested shot and cringe at his looks, or see Travis take the big contested shot and cringe at the shot?

by Norsktroll on Dec 2, 2008 7:03 AM PST reply actions

can Granger still be had in a trade?

Hedo? No.

The only potential upgrades I see in this team are a backup bruiser at the 4/5, and a top flight veteran point guard to guide us through for awhile until Surge or Rex are ready to take the reins. (Not that we HAVE to upgrade, given how we’re playing right now… but if we did upgrade, those would be the places)

Hedo gives us nothing that we don’t already have, and in some areas he is a step backward (slow footed defender, needs ball to be effective).

It’s a nice thought and yes he is one of the best of the available 2009 FA’s, but upon further review I’d pass.

I know I'll be called crazy.

I love LMA, he is a great player, and a great guy. But I just have a hard time falling in love with jump shooting Power (soft) Forwards. He is a baller, I like him. I just like banging PF’s more. But as long as we’re winning, let’s keep what we got.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

by OCBlazerFan1 on Dec 2, 2008 9:50 AM PST reply actions

LMA is the new style 4

Look around – there aren’t too many Mailmen out there anymore, unless they play for Houston or Minnesota. – Elgin.

or Utah, or LA, or PHX, or Toronto, or Chicago...

I actually don’t think I agree with you.

by everett on Dec 2, 2008 1:00 PM PST up reply actions

Malone was 6'8 and 265

who on LA is built like that, or Phx, or Tor (Bosh is the new style 4), or Chi (Tyrus Thomas)?

Boozer is too short to play like Malone; LA has two new-style 4s. Amare is much taller than Malone and I wouldn’t call him a banging PF although he is huge.

You don’t have to agree with me but I can’t imagine why you don’t. – Elgin

not just right

Too slow for 3, too small for 4. Great shooter but too much of a liability on the defensive end. Another guy to drive Nate nuts. – Elgin

GrateDane17, You missed my point...

I’m comparing Hedo and LaMarcus because they could both be considered so-called “big three” players. What position they play has nothing to do with it. “Big three” players come from all five positions.

If LaMarcus is our second most important player, why wouldn’t we consider bringing in another starter at a different position who has comprable, if not better, stats?
