Brandon Roy P.O.W.

It's been mentioned in the sidebar twice now, but here's the official press release from the Blazers:

BRANDON ROY NAMED NBA'S WESTERN CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Trail Blazers 4-0 on the week

PORTLAND, Ore. - Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy was named the NBA's Western Conference Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the NBA.

Roy guided the Trail Blazers to a 4-0 week, with wins over Sacramento , Miami , New Orleans and Detroit . The third-year Trail Blazer and 2008 NBA All-Star averaged 20.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists while shooting 50.8% (30-for-59) from the floor in four starts. He also set or tied season highs with 28 points vs. Sacramento , seven rebounds vs. Miami and 10 assists vs. New Orleans .

"As a leader of our team and a player who does both the big and small things to help us win, Brandon couldn't be more deserving of the honor," said Trail Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard . "Having the NBA recognize his performance this past week is a testament to his selfless play and a recognition of the team's early season success."

At 12-6 overall, the Trail Blazers have played 11 of their first 18 games on the road and are currently tied for first place in the Northwest Division and tied for second in the Western Conference.

Other nominees for the honor were New Orleans ' Chris Paul, Houston 's Yao Ming, Dallas ' Jason Terry and the L.A. Lakers' Kobe Bryant.

Roy, 24, garnered the award for the third time in his career after winning it in back-to-back weeks last season (Dec. 9 and Dec. 16). He joins Clyde Drexler as one of two players in franchise history to win the award three times.

Congratulations to Brandon.  Player of the Month next?  I suppose Player of the Fortnight would have to come first...

He was once thought to be the one who brought the Force in balance. When his coach didn’t put him into the rank of a master*cough*starter he became increasingly moody and brooding. This enabled the evil Zen Master to pull him over to the dark side and he became a Laker. Noooooooooooooo!

Its a direct insult to a person than criticising his credentials..
Im a basketball lover, and i like to watch Blazers, boston, La and Spurs. and member of some Blog community in SBnation.

Sorry for highlighting that post, but as a coach (Doc Rivers) and being one of known bball player in NBA on his Prime i dont think that you have more credentials than him to insult his personality in the name of basketball. So where’s the class on that that i used to read in here?

Good day folks.. im not a hater, im just an avid basketball fans and im enjoying watching your team plays mostly when Greg Oden start playing this season..

That's nice, but he's no superstar.

At least that’s what I’ve heard. Me, I’m sooo confused. I thought if he played like a superstar and led like a superstar, he was a superstar.

But then that Drexler dude wasn’t all that good either. Or so I heard. Never won a title.

how Roy and Drexler are the only two Blazers to ever do A (and C and C…..ad infinitum).

A little side note

The NBA’s top ten plays of the past week include two by the Blazers. A great week all around. Let’s not forget to cheer just as much for them during the hard times as the good (this road trip could still be brutal).

Brandon Roy is so amazing everytime he drives. It is breathtaking to watch him thoughfully pick his way through an entire team and then embarrass the best shot blockers in the league.

Most underrated star in the league.

You're right about the road trip.

Even New York will be a tough game. I just never know what to expect from that bunch! Hopefully the Blazers can control the tempo.

Is it wrong to think that Brandon Roy might just be better than Clyde Drexler?

And I watched a lot of Clyde through the years. But Brandon Roy had been amazing this season. I’m going to give this a little more time, but that I’m even considering it astounds me.

I did wonder how long it took Clyde to get three

Actually, I’m surprised he only won it three times. I wouldn’t think that it was such a hard prize, but I guess it is.

I don’t think we can say Roy’s better than Clyde just yet, but he clearly is as special to this franchise as Clyde was.

by grimc on Dec 1, 2008 10:19 PM PST up reply actions

Clyde was more dominant individually

and probably will retain that title.

Roy has a chance to be considered the more winning of the two if he brings some rings.

Both are/were indispensible to their teams. I think Clyde may have been a tinge more indispensible though. Take him away and even with all of those other names we love and remember fondly, that team withers (comparatively). We don’t know as much what the current team would look like without Roy. Not as good, of course, but there are other wheels here. Clyde was THE star on that team.

Suffice it to say I wouldn’t want to be without either of them. When all is said and done they will probably both be remembered as two of the three best players to ever put on a Portland uniform.

by Dave on Dec 1, 2008 11:39 PM PST up reply actions

Brandon is clutch

and for all his greatness, Clyde just wasn’t. At the end of the game, you really preferred having Porter take that shot. With Brandon, if they triple-team him, then it’s probably ok for him to let someone else take that final shot. Probably.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

by jscot on Dec 2, 2008 2:37 AM PST up reply actions

I agree.

Individually, few could hang with the Glide. But Roy not only has a good individual game, but an amazing knack for getting the rest of his team into the game. Not that Drexler didn’t do this, but I don’t remember him doing this as well as Roy.

Then again, it could just be selective memory at work, valuing what’s in front of me more than what happened in the past.

Right now, anyway

you have to give the nod to Clyde and I don’t think it’s close. He’s one of the 50 greatest players of all time. If Brandon’s career ended tomorrow he would be remembered fondly and we would all ache with the “what ifs” but he would not be in that select company. Another 8-10 seasons of this…absolutely.

by Dave on Dec 2, 2008 9:16 PM PST up reply actions

Go Roy! You prove it every game.

There’s those moments – you know the ones – where he takes the ball at the top of the key and you know something good is about to happen. Could be a dish underneath, or just a great lay-in with contact (called or not) – either way he takes the ball in his hands and as fans we don’t even cringe. That’s talent, leadership, whatever you want to call it. I love it!

by Knobby on Dec 1, 2008 9:08 PM PST reply actions

Roy vs Clyde?

Clyde was a crowd pleaser from the very beginning, like Roy but for different reasons. Clyde had natural athleticism and hops. Roys attraction isn’t nearly as dramatic but will probably result in more playoff success. But is the highest compliment to be compared to Clyde. I remember the first time I saw him in a Rockets uniform. It was like seeing your girlfriend with someone else after a break-up.
