March to the Sea
I'm calling it now:
Portland will go 5-0 on this road trip. A professional victory over New York. Blowing the doors off of DC. A coming-out party against Boston. A high-scoring, 14 point win in Toronto.
This road trip will be like Sherman's March to the Sea - destroying everything along the way. Detroit now sees that they need Billups and don't have a real shot at LeBron anyhow. New York will descend into inner turmoil and realize they are not much better off than they were last year and turn their clock forward two summers. Celtics fans will wonder what the hell happened, create a conspiracy theory, and attempt to discredit the game when they lookc at the box score and see KG and PP combine for 19 points while Ray Allen goes 7-20 from the floor and attempts just 2 free throws. Toronto will lay down in defeat 5 minutes into the game.
When they look back on this season, this road trip will be remembered as a turning point of the year, in fact, the turning point of this generation's NBA. Just like Bird-Magic remade the NBA in the 80's or Jordan re-molding it in the 90s. For all the effort and time wasted looking for the "Next Jordan", it'll turn out to be a team - the Brandon Roy Blazers - that will be the defining frame in which the league will be viewed in the oncoming era. If the 2000's were an era of false idols (remember when Vince Carter was "NEXT"?), the 2010's will be a Rip City Era.

wow
those are some high expectations. I prefer cautious optimism so I’m guessing 3-2 on this trip, hoping for 4-1, and would probably poo my pants if we go 5-0.

if you can't believe, what's the point of fandom?
I mean,
the anticipation is always the best part. I mean winning it all is great, but not as great as the build up.
Also,
with the exception of Boston, we’re definitively the better team among Detroit, New York, DC and Toronto. We should go at least 4-1 without rose-colored glasses. Expectations of anything less are coming from the mindset of the past. we’re in a new era, folks.

New era.
Or revisited era at least. It’s been a few years since not every win was a celebration. A few years since we weren’t almost always the underdog. These days we would look silly celebrating like NBA champions after beating somebody like Memphis.
Dang. Expectations.
4-1 would be super for this road trip.
I will also accept 3-2, 5-0, 7-0 and 16-2.

5 straight road wins would be grand...
Especially a win a Boston, that would be the ultimate confidence boost for our team. We need that win.

We don't need that win
We got the win we needed. You don’t need to win every game, but you need to win some of the tough ones, enough that you know you CAN go into a tough place and grind out a solid win. We’ve won at Orlando, we’ve won at Detroit.
We don’t actually NEED to sweep the Eastern Conference this year. Granted, we’re doing so thus far, and it is very nice. But we don’t need it.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

yeah...
You’re right, we don’t “need” that win. I was writing that in the context that we would need that win in order to achieve a higher state of conciousness. I totally get what you’re saying regarding the difference between need and wants. My original prediction for this road trip was that we would go 3-2, and that was being optimistic for me…
Manzell kinda disrupted my normal line of thinking and got me daydreaming like when I was a kid reading the old marvel “What if?” Comics, remember those? What if Spider man joined the fantastic 4?
I’m pretty darn sure everyone feels good about themselves after the Detroit road win, and if we get at least 3-2 on this trip we will be looking way better than anyone could have predicted so far…….but…….. a win in Boston could potentially raise us to a whole nutha level in not only terms of respect around the league but in our self confidence and pride.
It would be superb, that’s all I’m saying.
by blazerbeliever on Dec 1, 2008 2:05 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
Although I think we’re already getting that respect, and 3-2 on the trip would protect that — as long as we compete in Boston. If they blow us out, there will be lots of “showed the kids how far they have to go” stuff going around. But if we play them hard and close, it will be seen as putting them on notice that we’re here, we’re tough, and we aren’t going to lie down for anybody.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

Very high expectations
I’d say don’t get your hopes too high. If we go 3-2 on a difficult road trip, I will be more than happy. DOn’t forget this is on the road. If we went 3-2 at home, I would be happy too, but I still wouldn’t expect to go 5-0.

funny thing is
that people are now asuming wins. its inevitable that well lose against a team or two that we wer “suposed” tu win, and playing on the road is adjusting the odds against us. ill be happy for a 3 and 2 record, and estatik for anything better. ill be patient with a 2 – 3 record and enjoy the next win. ill be greatfull tu have them back home safe and sound if they go 1 – 4, and wont read anything from the side bar far a week if that happens. but regardless of our record, anything other then 1 – 4 includes bosten as a possibility. i doubt they take us lightly thow, thats a luxury we left in last year. one game at a time, GO BLAZERS!!!!

rather than disappointed and/or feeling the refs jobbed us or why did so-and-so have such a bad game. hey, sometimes you get some bad sushi or you cant sleep in the hotel. it happens. sometimes the rims just seem too tight in a new gym, or the background is somehow weird. brandon might get 2 fouls in the first two miutes of the game.
it’s a long season. i hope the blazers are hot at the end.

I was hoping we’d take care of business in NY and Wash, and steal either Detroit or Toronto.

i predict a win in boston
they just need to envision allen as the sonic, kg as the timberwolve, and recognize pierce as the bum, individual perenial losers that they have been throughout their careers. sure they are a great team now but in the big picture, over their careers they all have alot more L’s on their forheads than W’s. posey leaving will help and we should be more physical this year too with greg.

I love the optimism, my man!
5-0 would be oh so sweet and would certainly let the rest of the NBA world know that the Blazers have arrived. I, like may posters, would be ecstatic if the good guys finished this road trip 4-1 and pleased with 3-2. I do agree that there will be a time when the Blazers go on a win streak that signifies a sea change in the NBA. If this road trip begins that sea change, then you shall be a prophet.

I think the Blazers will take care of NY & the Bullets,
lose in a tight battle at the Garden and finish TOR

The Celts will get the message that they can’t
intimidate this young team and when Boston shows up

I'm not so worried about Ray Allen getting 2 FTs
as Paul Pierce shooting 40 FTs. That was a key to our victory against the Pistons: Iverson shot poorly and we did not bail him out with fouls, his bread and butter. And Wade’s, and Pierce’s. And hopefully Roy’s!

I look forward to Batum guarding Pierce
if he can do what he did to Wade then we will walk out with a W. Our bigs will keep KG in check. We should be fairly evenly matched with Boston. I think it’s possible to go 5-0 but I think NY and Boston will be the tests for the Blazers. We have porbelm with High octane offenses, but if we’re hitting shots early then our defense will shut them down as they can’t run when hit make our shots.

Toronto is TOUGH, no matter what their record is...
Calderón is quite possibly the 2nd best PG in the NBA (kudos to Chris Paul).
Chris Bosh is THE BEST PF in the NBA.
Andrea Bargnani is a 7-footer with a soft touch, vein of Pau Gasol — a former NUMBER ONE OVERALL PICK.
We know about Jermaine Oneal, a former multiple time All Star.
Anthony Parker and Kapono can shoot.
If you think this is an easy game in their own gym, you are wrong.
Not to mention the Celtics at the Gahhhh-dun.
The Knicks and Bullets or whatever the hell they’re called are winnable games…
3-2 would be a nice trip.

Thank God we were not forced to draft Bargnani. It is established how much love there is for perimeter-oriented Bigs in the BE fansphere.
