Monday Junk -- Dec. 1, 08

Morning all ...

"Organizing" is a strong word, but I'm putting out a call to NY-area Blazer fans to pre-funk before Tuesday's game. Here's the info:

5:30/6-to-7 pm-ish at someplace close … the magic 8-ball says:
O’Reilley’s Pub at 56 W 31st and 6th ave.

I'm sitting in the 201 section with an old buddy (who I think is a Knicks fan, but not a drooling nutso fan like me).

I'm not sure if I've been to O'Reilly's, and I usually avoid this part of town when possible, so don't blame me if the place sucks. There's a chance I have been there, and it sucks, but honestly, on a tuesday afternoon, who cares?

There.

What other junk you got?

Yeah,

I’d come up for the NYK game if I could… I love it when the Blazers play on the east coast. and win in opponents buildings -

Games are somewhat more fun than in the Rose Garden b/c nobody really respects them much out East, but they always find a way to make a game close enough to put everyone on their seat… It’s also much easier to talk to the players when they’re on the road – in fact, I notice they actually enjoy positive encouragement from fans (there are few fans out here)… i once stayed after a game in boston, and McMillan came right out of the locker room and we chatted for at least 10 minutes on everything besides basketball – just a classy guy.

I thought that at first too.

But then I realized most teams have private planes, and would visit Hawaii during a West Coast trip anyway.

I think the bigger reason might be the noted Hawaii pricing, and the fact that the NBA is starting a “green” initiative under most reports.

I think UH has the most home games in the NCAA

Teams want to come here because of the weather and it costs so much for UH to fly back and forth to the mainland.

Quote from Stu the Lakers’ colorman: “Changed shots are better than blocks because they usually result in defensive rebounds.”

That’s quite good.

Note that Toronto is going to match up very well with the Blazers; that’s probably a road loss.

3-2 on this trip seems most likely.

is it the spainish way to turn over the ball?

check out the TO numbers from Bejing on the spainish team, do they just take a lot of risks?

by appel82 on Dec 1, 2008 8:39 AM PST up reply actions

opps

i guess they did pretty well acctually huh, maybe i was just thinking of gasol’s 23 TOs but he played a lot of minutes

by appel82 on Dec 1, 2008 8:46 AM PST up reply actions

You still have a point, Calderon didn't play well in the Olympics, also missing games with a muscle injury

Navarro, Rudy and Rubio were the guards to carry the team, in addition to the Gasol brothers who arguably played better than Howard in the Olympics.

by Norsktroll on Dec 1, 2008 8:50 AM PST up reply actions

alright norsk, who were your top 10 olympic stander-outers?

mine are probably:

10. M. Gasol
9. P. Mills
8. the Chinese’s jumpshots
7. Calderon – i thought he looked like a 2 guard, but awesome
6. can’t remember six, was too early in the morning when i watched the games
5. lithuania in general – the US stomped them in exhibition but they really came out and competed-check grammar on that sentence.
4. Kobe – as much as balzers hate him, he played very well and was fun to watch play amazing perimeter d, something the blazers could study
3. Coach K – super intense military guy, really inspiring at times
2. Rudy, Rudy, Rudy
1. Dwayne Wade – Bejing MVP IMHO

by appel82 on Dec 1, 2008 8:58 AM PST up reply actions

If I had to form an All-Tournament team, it would probably look like this

PG: Paul, Rubio
SG: Wade, Rudy
SF: Kobe, James
PF: Bosh, Nowitzki
C: P. Gasol, M. Gasol or Howard

Coaching staff: Some mix of Spain, US, and Argentina who all got a lot out of their teams

MVP: Wade
Breakout: Rudy
Most Improved from last World Championship: US Teamplay, M. Gasol

Several other players looked really good, even on teams that didn’t do much damage. The international competition has become much harder and the NBA has to send a really good team of individual stars that also play well together to still win.

by Norsktroll on Dec 1, 2008 9:19 AM PST up reply actions

Leaf Blowers

Why do these “landscapers” have to blow a wall of leaves from the sidewalk onto your car as you drive past. These guys don’t even pick up the leaves they just blow them onto the neighbors property or into traffic.

darn things should be illegal

so much darn noise for so little reason. A rake will work just as well, with the bonus that raking is more enjoyable and you get to spend more time outside in the beautiful autumn weather. And a rake makes a pleasing sound whereas a leafblower makes an infernal racket.

They left me out for dead. It’s like we’re in a foxhole and I’m facing the other way. If I got shot in the head, at least you want to get shot by the enemy. Seahawks have been hit hard by the injury bug.

I also suspect that Holmgren annoucing his retirement before the start of the season may have affected the team’s psyche.

The Hawks have a lot of talent for a 2-11 team. This season’s record will net them good draft position. All they need is a snag a skills position guy with game breaking talent (say a guy like Carthwright (sp?) at Texas Tech) and lower down a new OB to groom as Hasselbeck’s replacement and they will be ok. They have a solid running game and a good young tight end in Carlson. The Defense is not bad. Hasselbeck’s missed a number of games (and not been 100% when he has played) and the recieving corps has either missed time or just plain sucked.

Feel the pain about work sucking. I hate my job. I want out. Hard being there and hard going to work unhappy. do this! don’t do that! can’t you read the signs?

Anybody remember the Five Man Electric Band? That was their only hit song. I like the last verse:

And the sign said, Everybody welcome, come in, kneel down and pray.
And when they passed around the plate at the end of it all I didn’t have a penny to pay.
So I got me a pen and a paper, and I made up my own little sign.
It said thank you Lord for thinking ‘bout me, I’m alive and doin’ fine!

well, the Blazerdancers

were a tempting draw for me :) And I have eaten at Wild Wings once and thought the food was good. But you’re probably right about it being too many people and not easy to watch the game. Perhaps I’ll just watch from the comfort of my own couch.

I put this in fanshots but since no one reads those....
Blazers up to Number 6 on the NBA.com power rankings.

Our comment?

Off: 114.6 (2), Def: 108.3 (17)
The Blazers got two big wins this weekend, at home over the Hornets on Friday and in Detroit on Sunday. Their offense has been sharp all season, but the defense has improved dramatically (99.9 rating) as they’ve won six of their last seven.

Also thought you might get a kick out of Dallas’ comment. Funny part emphasized in bold.

Off: 107.2 (18), Def: 104.5 (8)
The Mavs gave the Lakers a scare until a 17-0 L.A. run turned the game around on Friday. Still, Dallas has won six of their last seven (including four of five without Josh Howard) and play their next seven at home. Jason Terry has been lighting it up in Howard’s absence.

That is really hideous

Hope to see a lot of blazer fans there!

I’ll be in 201 with blazer gear on too.
I was hoping Fatty would read this post and show up as well.
I might not hang at pub too long if other blazer people don’t show.
Either way, I’ll leave before 7.

There is a episode of ....

…My Name Is Earl about that necklace. Soooo….it would probably be the perfect gift for you to buy!

On drowning my daughter before she becomes a teenager (to my son)-"You know how when you want to drown someone, you first tie something heavy to the their foot?" My Son: "Yeah?" Me:"You're the something heavy"

You're dirty

If I could get that necklace for under $40, I’d buy it because it is so darn cheesy.

by tominhawaii on Dec 1, 2008 6:10 PM PST up reply actions

Joy wanted it

so she got her kid to enter a science contest in hopes of winning enough money to buy it (from My Name is Earl)

Donnie Walsh: I banish you, Stephon Marbury

ESPN

Apple Commercial (and no, Marbury is not a Mac. It’s not an analogy, I just like the campaign and was reminded of that)

Also, Henry discusses which teams might be desperate enough to sign him after a buyout. Hint: Portland is not one of them. http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-37-1/Is-There-an-NBA-Home-for-Stephon-Marbury-.html

But I’m sure all of this will end up as fanshots and fanposts, since we need to get more Marbury into our lives.

Man

Those Boston telecast are such sorry wieners. They complain about every call or non call. Sound like pathetic looser.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

Warriors lose a heartbreaker at home to the Heat

They are now at 5-13, pretty much out of the playoff hunt.

GSOM is less than thrilled with Nelson at the moment.

by jksnake99 on Dec 1, 2008 10:34 PM PST reply actions

Just finished watching

I can’t blame Nelson for the ending plays. Some of that was just dumb luck.

And considering GSW had some good luck at earlier points of the game (and I can’t believe the refs fouled out Marion on such a questionable call), it looked like karma caught up on them at the end.

Unbelievable ending though. I jumped at the stolen inbound pass. And it sure looked like that GSW shot at the buzzer was going to fall… just fell off the rim.
