Blazers to retire Porter and Gross this season
Just watched Sports Sunday on KGW, and they very bluntly said "The Blazers will retire Terry Porter and Bobby Gross's numbers this season". The Porter news should be no surprise, but Bobby Gross? Seems a little odd for him, but he is part of our Championship team.... How much validity is in this I wonder?

Especially since Gross wore the same number as Porter (and Sheed, FWIW)…

Oh hey. Yeah.
I guess they’d have to do both at once – one number, two guys.

we need a new campaign... Honor TP Correctly
now they’re going to force TP to share his number in retirement with Gross.
Wow, what a ripoff for Terry. This whole situation is getting sort of gross, if you will.
We need to Honor TP Correctly, dangit. No sharing his retired number with others who may have worn it.

I honor TP
By always putting it on the holded so the patter faces out and it unrolls from the front instead of the back. I get mad at my wife for messing it up.
You should also insist on having the first sheet folded to a little arrow
Now please excuse me. The Marseillaise is going on. I don’t even celebrate that stuff. I’m not French like Tony Parker.
I do the housework
I’m not into doing that. The only thing I can get my sugar momma to do is fold the laundry.
Yes, it goes through the heater correctly in that direction
We were taught that in 6th grade (as well as how to use our desks as a bomb shelter in an atomic bomb attack!).

Why Honor stiffs?
In the grand scheme of things, they were stiffs when they played for Portland. TP was an above average point guard they helped us to a couple of finals. Big deal …we lost both finals. Bobby Gross was decent as a role player. That was it.
The only two legitimate players in the history of the team deserving of this honor are Clyde Drexler and Bill Walton.
TP was actually quite flexible
maybe your theory on number retirement is what is stiff.

You are right
He was an above average point guard …like I wrote above. Above average doesn’t quite cut it. I think you have to be extraordinary to have your number retire. Your standard of retiring numbers is a lot lower than mine and the rest of the league.
Fine
Act like sports still have some historical greatness and meaning behind them.
Today it’s all about the bucko$, and retiring jerseys is another thing to do to get people excited and sell things.

I am curious.
Do you actually think the Blazers retire numbers to increase jersey sale? How many jerseys you think they sell if they retire Porter’s number? How about Gross’s numbers? I bet you Brandon Roy’s jersey will still sell 100x, 1000x, or 10,000x more than either Porter’s or Bobby Gross’s.
I am sorry, no offense to all the Bobby Gross’s fans out there.
wow
I’m sorta indifferent to Porter’s number being retired because I’m too young to remember when he played, but you seem almost offended. Why the hate? Does a player have to be a hall of famer to get his number retired?

Porter was clutch.
The stuff you’ve been seeing from Brandon this year, that was Porter’s gig.
On a team with Drexler and plenty of ways to score, Porter took the last-second shots. They went in, too.
I liked Gross’s game too, he had knee injuries that cut his career short. He had a better 1977 finals than his opposite number, Dr. J. It’s OK that both players are being honored for wearing 30. Besides, Gross is the most important player that has not been honored from the 1977 team. – S.

22, 32 and 77
Drexler, Walton and one for the whole title team… those are the only three numbers that should be in the Rose Garden rafters.
Porter and Lucas barely miss the cut for me.

I dunno
looking through this list.. it seems like teams are all over the place in terms of when they decide to retire a number..

its different here
there are different dynamics at play here than in other cities. Its about contribution, identity, and community. I’d argue that Kersey, Duck, and Buck should be retired, too.

guess my fandom isn't that profound
because this is the first time I’ve ever heard of Bobby Gross. You all may flog me now.
Every child must be encouraged to get as much education as he has the ability to take. We want this not only for his sake-but for the nation's sake. Nothing matters more to the future of our country: not military preparations-for armed might is worthless if we lack the brain power to build a world of peace; not our productive economy-for we cannot sustain growth without trained manpower; not our democratic system of government-for freedom is fragile if citizens are ignorant.
-President Lyndon B. Johnson
Bobby was the motor for the Championship team
He ran tirelessly and lesser players such as Dr J could not keep up! Think Rip Hamilton except Bobby was much tougher than Rip and a better defender. Oh, and he shot 59% FG and 89%FT!

i rode the max to gresham
back in the day to get bobby gross’ autograph. i’d ride a donkey to troutdale to get TP’s. i love em both, and they both deserve it. after our current team finishes their run in about 10 years, there won’t be many numbers left for future blazers. what’s oden going to do when they retire buck williams’ number? know your blazers history before you start spouting your mouth off, please.
