Man, when you look at Jefferson next to LMA

You realize how much bulk LMA still needs to put on

by diskord on Nov 8, 2008 8:45 PM PST reply actions

LMA is pretty scrawny. The commentariat always talks about how "buff" he is, but I don't see it.

Part of it is that he doesn’t play low/tough so that probably colors my view of him a bit though.

LMA is never going to have a body like Jefferson's

That’s just a fact. He will always be more of an outside player.

It’s true, though, that he does need to get stronger around the basket and take physical play better.

Dear Mark Madsen

Do us a favor and stop stepping in the lane and grabbing the ball in between free throw shots and obnoxiously bouncing it two times then giving it to the referee. We’d like to get the game moving along and you haven’t been relevant for many years. Thanks.

You think I know the first thing about how hard your life has been, how you feel, who you are, because I read Oliver Twist? Does that encapsulate you? Personally... I don't give a $hit about all that, because you know what, I can't learn anything from you, I can't read in some fukin' book. Unless you want to talk about you, who you are. Then I'm fascinated. I'm in. But you don't want to do that do you sport? You're terrified of what you might say. Your move, chief.

Roy, 24pts, 9asst, 5reb. Way to come back to us!

Rudy 11pts, 2asst, 4reb.

Sergio, 2pts, 5asst, 2to. Not bad. Blake played too many minutes tonight. Far too many.

Eh, David West hasn't been great this year.

He could give up his spot for Roy. They have a few picks at the end of the all-star team for any position, right?

Ball Movement

Late Third Quarter and Sergio and Rudy are in. The ball is moving, and Lamarcus is scoring. Brandon returns, dishes out a couple of assists, and he is ready to hit the Big Shot because the Wolves have had to guard everyone. This win was much better, IMHO, than the one the other night, because the ball was MOVING! This will be the key to wins or losses.

Unfortunately with BRoy doing his point imitation, the team movement slows to a crawl.

The team has great depth. Why can’t they run plays with lots of team movement? They can sub if someone runs out of gas.

Jumpshots: 0-2, one of which was against the clock, both from distance.

Dave's prediction when the schedule came out
I’d say we need to find 12 or so wins before 2009 to be comfortable.

Dave has us pecked to win 12 games by January 2009. How are we doing so far?

ROTUNDITYDOTNET

Founder of the "Crash Batumcoot" Movement.

by damir on Nov 8, 2008 10:18 PM PST reply actions

And another
First and foremost, those first 2-3 weeks are brutal to the extreme. Even with a healthy Roy in the lineup we probably wouldn’t expect to win more than 5 of those 11 tops.

First 11 games, Dave has put Portland to win no more than 5 games.

ROTUNDITYDOTNET

Founder of the "Crash Batumcoot" Movement.

by damir on Nov 8, 2008 10:19 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry, but Dave is part of the problem

We don’t need people continuing to lower expectations for this team.

by hawkblogger on Nov 8, 2008 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

Eh?

Lowering expectations? He provided a realistic outlook by taking all things into consideration at the time: No Martell, brutal, and I mean brutal schedule, a rookie center, and a bunch of new rookies coming off the bench. It’s not “lowering expectations”, it’s being objective as he possibly can.

If you expected anything more than 3-3 at this point, then you have way too high of expectations.

ROTUNDITYDOTNET

by damir on Nov 8, 2008 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

You don't think we should have won the Utah game?

I think you could argue that the team has played below expectations even after factoring in the injuries. Look at each game:

@LA: Horrible performance
    SA: Best overall performance
@PH:Starters played a horrible game, definitely could have been won
@UT: Absolutely should have won.
    HO: Unexpected win
MN: Played down to their competition

My point is that people keep making excuses about them being young and having a really tough schedule, and what good does that do? They are clearly talented enough to have won at least one more game, and possibly two. They beat Utah 3 of 4 times last year, including without LMA, so why is that such an “expected” loss this year?

We won’t be a great team until we decide we are one. The future is now.

by hawkblogger on Nov 8, 2008 10:46 PM PST up reply actions

Well, if all it took was believing

I think Garnett would have about 5 championships by now. The only way the team decides it is a great team is just to play like one and it isn’t going to play like one, no matter the talent, with 3 rookies in the rotation.

The Blazers could also have easily lost all three of the game that they have won. Finley makes the shot, Roy doesn’t and Love or someone get that tip-in and we lose in OT. Great teams don’t blow 4th quarter leads. Great teams don’t play down to the Wolves. Great teams don’t leave the game up to last second shots, no matter how amazing. So, how is it possible to say that they should have won @Utah or @Phx? We all see the talent and we all want them to win as much as possible, but why should they beat playoff team on the road?

And ‘below expectations’ depends on whose expectations. Even before Martell and Oden went down my expectation was that we’d be 2-4 here at best. 1 win against the Wolves and then grabbing one win against either SA or Utah. With BOTH of those guys out I’m pumped that we are 3-3. We could be 0-6 right now. There would be TONS of questions if we were but no one would be overly surprised.

Whew!

I invented new curse words and nearly broke my hand pounding the coffee table in the first half, but I’ll take any win, anyhow.

I hate how soft we came out. I also am still not seeing the offensive sets that they can rely on. We’ve got the LMA post-up, the B-Roy 1-on-1 top of the key (called a 1-4), and we’ve got Rudy running off screens. Only the LMA set has been relatively effective through 6 games.

The pick and roll with Roy and LMA should be our bread and butter, but it’s been totally shut down. Not sure why.

I’m also starting to wonder about minutes. Batum has been great, but what happens when Martel gets back? How do the minutes breakdown? Just curious to see what happens there.

Let’s hope for at least two wins on this road trip.

just

got back from the game and if there are any Shins fans out there i was sitting behind Jesse Sandoval (drummer). thought that was pretty nifty. oh yeah the game was good too. Jefferson was nearly unstoppable tonight. There was one point in the game where right after a timeout Sergio ignored a few high fives from teammates and went straight to the bench. sassy. Brandon and LaMarcus brought their A games tonight and i enjoyed it. we’re sitting at .500 after 6 games and given the circumstances i am happy. god bless.

by southern oregon on Nov 8, 2008 10:55 PM PST up reply actions

i just got back from the game couldn't disagree more

he seemed to be interacting with the team more than usual even. and after he missed his 2nd three (with 1 sec on shot clock) and LMA got fouled on the put back and the ball almost went in, he had a big smile on his face, came up and smacked Rudy on the ass and went up laughing and said something to LMA and they were both laughing. pretty much the exact opposite of what you just said. on the radio post-game both dawson and harvey said they thought sergio looked happier and more free tonight and appeared to be getting on well with his teammates.
