Gameday Open Thread: Timberwolves vs. Blazers

How are we doing today?  More to the point, how will the Blazers do tonight?

Fill up the thread with predictions, in-game analysis, and what have you.  Enjoy!

--Dave (blazersub@yahoo.com)

Reminder (courtesy of our good friend Damir):  This game will be televised on KGW TV.

Another reminder, please NO PICTURES in the Gameday Threads!  They're slow enough as it is.  Tech support is working on a solution but for now we can help by keeping the pics elsewhere.  The only exception would be Timbo posting a boxscore every now and then.  I can live with that.

Tonights Game

Sergio will get more minutes, Nate will give him a chance for longer tonight as long as we aren’t down… I don’t think that will happen. The team will rally around Roy & play good basketball tonight…

Sergio’s shot will be on.

4/5 FG
2/3 3 point

Time to step up to the challenge.

I have a dream.

Ten minutes to go,

All the starters sitting together watching the game.

They are captured in a picture jumping to cheer a Sergio assist putting us up by twenty.

Towels wave, expressions of delight.

The picture becomes my screensaver.

Need a convincing win tonight——decided early

by 67 on Nov 8, 2008 1:38 PM PST up reply actions

The Spurs needed double OT and 55 points by Tony Parker. I want a convincing win, but it could become close again.

by Norsktroll on Nov 8, 2008 1:41 PM PST up reply actions

The Spurs

are a 2 1man team right now….Parker & Duncan….they gave us a close call, because we did not defend the 3 point shot and could not stop Parker….I say we need a convincing win, because it will show us how we measure up to the Wolves and others….the showing tonight is very, very, important for the Blazer’s confidence……

The two wins

were also botched 4th quarters that put those games in jeopardy, as well…we are lucky to be 2-3….you play those games again and 4 out of 5 times they become loses

by 67 on Nov 8, 2008 2:38 PM PST up reply actions

I would be willing to take my chances

betting that the fourth quarter lead losses by the Blazers against good teams were a more repeatable (and likely) occurrence than Finley missing that jumper and/or Roy hitting that 30-foot heave.

One of the things we’ll find as we become one is that good teams have the ability to reel in lesser (or at least less experienced) teams when the game is on the line. There was nothing surprising about what happened in Phoenix or Utah. The end of that Houston game, on the other hand, was a once-in-three-decades happening.

—Dave

by Dave on Nov 8, 2008 3:09 PM PST up reply actions

both our wins

were essentially tossups— games you’ll win about half of the time. So, we probobly should be 1-4 and we’re fortunate to be 2-3. We’ll certainly take it.

However, I agree with Timbo above that we’ve played pretty decently 4 games in a row… all competitive matchups against very good teams. 1-3 against those 4 teams would be respectable and we pulled off 2-2.

The last 4 games we’ve played like exactly what we are minus Greg and Martell— a team that’s somewhere between average and good.

True that

by einman77 on Nov 8, 2008 6:08 PM PST up reply actions

Yes

My sentiments as well….The Blazers need to get to the next level and this Minnesota game may be a chance to prove where they are at …..getting down to the last minutes (or seconds) of the 4th quarter and then pulling a rabbit out of the hat, should not be expected to get a high yield of wins…….I think they know, that playing for 4 quarters, is a goal that they should progress to….
It is often that many good teams let their guard down (when they have control of the game) plenty of times during the course of a game…but realizing what is happening and then being able to adjust, is a trait owned by good teams….( getting back control of the game )……..of course you also need good players to get it done, as well…..I guess that’s what we will begin to find out this season

by 67 on Nov 8, 2008 3:31 PM PST up reply actions

It sounds like it is more important for fans' confidence...

I know that every game counts but there are no must win games in November. What they need to do is go out and play to win. They need to play hard and keep learning to play together. If they lose, they need to learn from it and keep working to figure out how to win. The talent is there and it will translate into more wins than losses this year. Let’s not freak out if they don’t come out and crush the Timberwolves by 20.

by tssbro on Nov 8, 2008 4:17 PM PST up reply actions

Well I admit ,

it may have been a bad choice of a word (confidence) to imply on the team…..but, I don’t freak out, especially over a basketball team…..there are a lot more important things out there, one can “freak Out” on….
Even if they have a losing season, I won’t “freak out”. (But I hope you don’t, if they don’t live up to your predictions or expectations)…….
I guess we can all speculate on what is going to happen and what they need to do to win…but the bottom line is; the players play the game and will upstage any predictions after all is said and eventually done…..

by 67 on Nov 8, 2008 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

I am sorry

I don’t know what you think I meant by “freak out”. I honestly wasn’t trying to offend you. What I have been reading at the BE over the past couple of weeks is people overreacting to where the Blazers are right now, in my opinion. That is all I meant.
I read your comments and a few others in this thread saying the Blazers had to come out and blow out Minnesota and put them away early. I disagreed mainly because when you start out with an expectation like that, you overreact when it doesn’t happen. I was trying to bring the thread a little more to the middle by taking a longer, 82 game, approach, and express my opinion that the Blazers look better than last year and I think they will win more games as they come together.

I sincerely apologize if “freak out” was to strong a phrase. All I meant was be careful not to place too much importance on one game in November. It is a long season that I think we can be confident they will win more than they lose.

PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04

by tssbro on Nov 9, 2008 6:06 PM PST up reply actions

I was not

offended by the use of the words “freak out”, only it’s implication that having the Blazers come out and provide a convincing win would be connected with a fan freaking out. A convincing win, or 2, would go a long way towards building some confidence and maybe take a little pressure off…..(the team is struggling for sure) …..
Time will tell, but this team still has many components from last years squad and they have not been able to get convincing wins (including all of last year)…it is a history you can’t ignore and will stay with them until they start to develop a new one…..Last night would have been as good as time as any….and the timing was right (before a road trip) and the opponent was right .(Minnesota on the second night of back to back) and we were at home….a good time for a convincing win…..But of course looking for a convincing win and getting one are always speculative until the game gets played…
It’s early, and I’m not throwing it in, if we have a lousy Nov……but having cause for concern and then suggesting a possible short term cure, should not be misconstrued ….
My reactions, to the Blazers play, has not been just this year, but simply a continuation of the same problems of last year….So when you add that to a team that has new players and needs time to adjust, it is extra baggage that needs to be fixed as well……And it can be fixed, will take time, and having a couple of convincing wins along the way should help it along…..

Anyway…. I appreciate the apology…..no hard feelings here…We just, simply, disagree

by 67 on Nov 9, 2008 7:14 PM PST up reply actions

Yes we do...

The trajectory I see over the past three years is upward. I see it in the early games this year. I saw it last year. I guess I am not focusing on negative aspects because I see improvement every year over the past three years and as long as the team keeps moving in that direction, I am happy.
Enjoy the season.

Must win.

We have had some tough opponents early on. We should smoke Minnesota. I think we can, and hope we don’t take them too lightly. A must win even against a weaker opponent. GO BLAZERS!

by CanadianBlazerfan on Nov 8, 2008 2:24 PM PST up reply actions

We are currently in a three way tie for conference places 7-8-9.

A loss puts us in a four-way tie for 9-10-11-12.
A win puts us in a two-way tie for 6-7, maybe a three-way tie for 5-6-7 (if New Orleans loses to Miami).

I know it’s early, but playoff standing is still a great way to put it.
Going from the cusp of playoff ranks to either out of the top eight (with a lot of company)
or solidly in the playoff picture.

And if we win, only four teams will DEFINITELY have a better record than us,
and we’ve already played them all (going 1-3 against them).
So that gives an idea of how rough our first 5 were, and how well we’ve handled it.
We may have lost to three of the best, but we kept even with or above all those teams
that are NOT the top four, while we weren’t playing them.
Which means when we DO play them (like tonight), a win wouldn’t be to catch up with them,
but to put them behind us.

nice outlook!

by faith on Nov 8, 2008 12:26 PM PST up reply actions

Well, it's not just "nice".

It’s also a warning about what a loss would mean.

That prospect has been treated more as two things:
1) A disappointment, just losing to a “lesser” team as an event in its own right,
without addressing ramifications and consequences, what a loss would DO to us.
2) Something that might affect our end-of-year standing, our playoff seed/qualification down the road many months.

But on a right-now basis, being tied with Sacramento, Pyrite State, and Minnesota themselves simply stinks,
regardless of where we would end up at season’s end and what difference one loss would make in that status.
Especially when the alternative is to be looking up at NOBODY but Utah, Phoenix and the L[xxx]rs, and maybe New Orleans.

Well, no, we're not.

Because if we DID, it’d mean (at least right now) that we’re on the same level as the Worriers, Sac O’ Mentos,
and the TimberPuppies (who could then point not just to the record, but the game itself as proof of being at our level).

And we’re NOT at the level of those three teams; we’re better them, in a higher class.

Right?

Where do I park? What do I get there? What's the best food?

Hey, this is Sherman Alexie. Tonight is my first game. I’m driving from Seattle. Is there a special parking section for broken-hearted Sonics fans looking for a hoops fix? Where is the best place to park? Is there a Get Smart super secret way to get to Rose Garden from the north? Where is the best food in the Garden? I don’t drink so the micro brew advice will fall on dry eyes.

Park at Mary's Place

It’s the Lusty Lady of Portland. Then get on that train thing and it will take you to the game. When I went to the game, there was this cart by Schonz that had really good corn dogs. Someone in Portland probably has better advice, but I doubt it.

Pick a pre- or post-game activity you want, like dinner.

Find a place that offers it and is near a MAX station.
Then take the MAX to and from the Rose Garden, parked way away from the arena-area traffic congestion.

Even without doing something before or after the game, parking in the Lloyd Center area and MAXing it two stops is the way to go;
whenever I went to a game by MAX, the crowd always filled up at the Lloyd Center stops.
Those were drivers who parked away from the arena.

Parking near a MAX station and riding down gives the local flavor and saves a ton on parking. If you part at Lloyd Center you can ride free. If you need more tips e-mail me. The food depends on what you’re looking for.

Minnesota, which last beat the Blazers in March 2007, won 84-74 on Dec. 7, 2005 for its last victory in Portland.

They are coming off a four game losing streak. We are the 75-25 favorite according to Accuscore.

I want a win! A clear win!

Still in Cleveland

The latest rumors were that he is highly attainable, and the Knicks are interested offering Eddy Curry for him. Bwahaha. We could offer much more than that both in terms of quality and in terms of expiring/cheaper deals.

Actually, Charlotte could use Curry more than New York does.

They could finally slide Okafur over to power forward where he belongs.
That’s been one of their biggest knocks, making Emeka play center.

Wonder how Larry-Brown/Eddy-Curry relations were when they were together?

That makes sense.

The recovery window was always 2-4 weeks.
Two weeks from the injury will be Tuesday, November 11, in between the first two games of the 5-game trip.
He’d have to be back after three weeks at the soonest to rule out a return on this road trip.

Right, but travel is needed just to have the option to play.

They’d only leave him home if they KNEW he’d be back on the 19th at the earliest,
and ruled out him being ready to play before then.

He may play, he may not – but if he stayed home, he’d HAVE TO Not Play.
Which, given his recovery window, would indicate a setback in his recovery.

Sorry, the short-answer way to put it is:

This just means they’re not ruling out a return before the 3 week mark.
And so that’s not exactly a big sign of anything at all, just a LACK of a negative sign.

The pressure of days, do what I say
And I'll make you okay and drive them away

That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

5-point half-minute binge to end the half . . .

. . . and cut an eleven-point deficit to six.

I’ve freaking seen this in Blazer games, REPEATEDLY.
This is how the Spoors end the first half on their way to winning a game they were losing big in the first half.
I’m not saying we’re Sandy Auntie, but if we translate this good ending of a bad first half into a win,
THEN! – then we’re doing to a Bad Team what the Spoors repeatedly did to US when WE were a Bad Team.

dude

we’ve played 1.5 bad games (Lakers and the first half of this one) and 4 solid/decent ones. We aren’t as good as Utah, Phoenix, LA or Houston. If you expect us to outplay those teams consistently, you’ll be disappointed.

We are going to win this game, and get to 3-3. Mark my words.

No reason to panic.

That's my read also -- Lakers was a disaster and this half was a disaster, the rest of the year pretty good.

Wow - look closer.

4 of LMA’s 5 rebounds were on the offensive glass, as part of
TEN of our 14 ribbies being from the offensive end.

That’s what happens when you shoot BAD.

Or: If you count every offensive rebound as turning a shot attempt into a pass (and yes, I do),
then we actually shot 15 for 29 – merely average (especially as a post-OffReb stat),
but it’s OUR misses we’re getting because there are SO MANY OF THEM.

This team has GOT to come up with SOMEBODY that can play in the paint...

The Center can’t do it alone, no matter who it is… We have Mr. Squishy-Soft (Frye), Mr. Erratic (LMA), and Mr. Undersized (Travis). If Travis would seriously crash like he did in the Houston game, he’d be acceptable — but that’s like the one time EVER he has played with that style…

Nate saved Przy for the second half.

2 fouls may be too much to play in the first quarter, but not late in the second.
Nate hung his forward-as-center players out there to dry to make a point,
and Przy is now ready (in body AND fouls) for a twenty-minute second half,
and the Blazers are ready to have HIM, and be thankful for him.

Or we could see five minutes of Oden, just for the shock effect on the crowd and both teams.

Halftime

Time for Nate to cut a few guys’ heads in half. Rip them a few proverbial new ones. Lackluster is the word for the first half of play. The team is playing like a group of lamewads. Total lamewads. Not a class act. Not by a long stretch. This team would play better with that 102 year old lady, Mrs. Lowry, as their starting power forward. She’d probably dunk on Al Jefferson just ‘cause he’s such an ugly dude. She’d let out a roar and Shavlik would go nuts with the towel waving on the bench.

The perfect is the enemy of the good.

My statements:

From this:

We are currently in a three way tie for conference places 7-8-9.
A loss puts us in a four-way tie for 9-10-11-12.
A win puts us in a two-way tie for 6-7, maybe a three-way tie for 5-6-7 (if New Orleans loses to Miami).

I know it’s early, but playoff standing is still a great way to put it.

And a loss would be, ever more so, a Very Bad Sign In Deed.

[break for a reply and replytothereply]

Well, it’s not just “nice”.
It’s also a warning about what a loss would mean.

That prospect has been treated more as two things:
1) A disappointment, just losing to a "lesser" team as an event in its own right,
without addressing ramifications and consequences, what a loss would DO to us.

And this:

5-point half-minute binge to end the half . . .
. . . and cut an eleven-point deficit to six.
I’ve freaking seen this in Blazer games, REPEATEDLY.
This is how the Spoors end the first half on their way to winning a game they were losing big in the first half.
I’m not saying we’re Sandy Auntie, but if we translate this good ending of a bad first half into a win,
THEN! – then we’re doing to a Bad Team what the Spoors repeatedly did to US when WE were a Bad Team.

[break for a reply and replytothereply]

I said “IF”.
So a win here may mean even more than some other beat-a-Bad-Team-at-home scenario.

And this:

Nate saved Przy for the second half.
2 fouls may be too much to play in the first quarter, but not late in the second.
Nate hung his forward-as-center players out there to dry to make a point,
and Przy is now ready (in body AND fouls) for a twenty-minute second half,
and the Blazers are ready to have HIM, and be thankful for him.

Or we could see five minutes of Oden, just for the shock effect on the crowd and both teams.

So there’s all that.
Win or lose, I think I nicely anticipated what it means.
