Blake To The Future? (pic and poll)

Who should be our future starting point guard (respectively the one who closes out games, which could be considered more important yet on most teams is the same player)?
Personally I think Steve is still doing a pretty good job and it is his role to lose (the poster is artistic freedom. The statements are negative because the ones on the original are, too. I could have written "He was always in time for his practice" just as well).
Last season, he was (among all players, not just point guards) 18th in the league in assists (413). That’s less than half as many as Paul or Nash but on par with Parker or Rondo. He was 23rd in assists per game (5.1) and 7th (3.65) in assists per turnover. He also was 21st in the league in 3P% (.406), which e.g. is better than Paul who shoots about the same volume of threes. True, that’s all not star-like which he will never be. He is not a scorer driving to the rim or a dangerous stealer and feared defender. But as a whole package he is way better than “average” and could be just what we need. Besides, Roy is taking away from some of his numbers, since he is even ahead (430 assists, 5.8 apg) or very close behind (3.16 assists per TO) Blake in these categories. Last season they were the best passing duo in the NBA.
But quite a lot of people seem to disagree and think Steve is over the hump and should move aside, see e.g. the posts under Quick's recent Sergio article. And while I like a lot of aspects of his play, I'm not sure he is good enough to win a championship with. Then again, we can't be sure who on this roster is, and he points out himself that he was never the best player on his teams but still led them to the win:
I have done it on every level so far," Blake says. "And I have never been the best player on my team when I won those championships. So what I would like to prove is that the point guard doesn't have to be the best player on the team to win a championship. And I feel the way I play can help us achieve a championship."

I voted for Bayless
I think instead of randomly picking a trade that might never occur, or might occur at another position (SF?) its best to go with what you got. We have Jerryd Bayless and he’s the only player we have at the position that could both fit in perfectly with our first unit, and has the potential to be among the best PG’s in the league. The 2nd unit should be led by Sergio Rodriguez and that team should be the change of pace lineup ready to turn any game into a blowout. Steve Blake ultimately is not a Championship level PG, and no matter how much Nate wants to bury his head in the sand on this one, we’d be better off in the future having better developed our two potentially championship level PG’s. If Bayless can even somewhat grasp what we want our starting PG to be, and Sergio can even shoot just 35% from 3, I think that will eventually be good enough from the PG position to one day bring home a championship.
This all said, I was the guy lining up last year, ready to do whatever it took to get Devin Harris. So there are always going to be other teams players out there to consider. Another player I really like, that could fit in really well to this team and might even be available late enough when we make our 1st round draft pick is Darren Collison. If you’ve seen him play defense, you’d at least have the suspicion that he could be an elite defender of quick PG’s in the NBA. In addition to that dominating defense he shot 53% from 3 point land, and knows how to run an offense.
I'm not sure that another project point guard fresh out of school is the answer.
Besides, we’re gonna win 79 games this season and we’re only gonna be able to draft This guy .
I voted for trade or free agent
Because that’s what spring/summer 2009 is all about for KP — landing a quality point guard.
I also agree with you that Bayless could be the future, but I wonder if he might get traded first.
Sergio has an enormous head there. I don't think that thing is gonna fit in the car.
It also looks kind of like he’s talking to someone on a cell phone, saying “hey, what time are you getting off work tonight?”
You either have the worst facial recognition I've ever even heard of
or you’ve never actually seen this team play.
It ain't Einman77's fault!
He’s been living in Japan lately. Once ya stay there a while, all faces just tend to blend together into one.
Morty
thanks for your post about blake..
…i thought about writing a post defending Blake, but was too lazy. The fact that Brandon is an assist machine (rubs magic dust on ball to make it go in for his teamates :-)) does hurt Blake’s assist numbers. You did a better job than i would have anyway, thanks Norsktroll. It’s hard to say who the future PG to win a championship is, Blake and O-dog seemed to have good chemistry in August (according to the media), maybe once Oden returns will see some of that when Brandon and Lamarcus are either playing poor, or being over-double-teamed.
Cue Huey Lewis and the News
“Don’t need money, don’t take fame, don’t need no credit card to ride on this train…”
Steve Blake just might change your mind, that’s the power of…blog
Whenever someone breaks out the “what if KP signs K*be as a free agent?” travesty, this is my response…
I foresee two possibilities. One, coming face to face with Bryant in a Portland uniform would put Blazer fans into shock and they’d simply pass out. Or two, the encounter could create a time paradox, the results of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum, and destroy the entire universe! Granted, that’s a worse case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to merely our own galaxy.
Cut Blakes Minutes
He plays terrible defense and his shot is just as bad as Sergio’s. Yet Sergio delivers 5 assists with only 13 mins… Blake can’t go over 2 assists with 32 minutes on the court? WTF?
"I just know that I can't get big, I can't eat whatever I want to. I have to eat healthy, I have to stay right, I have to stay involved and ... I have to be here at practice because you know what? I can play pretty quick."
