Back to a reference to a Point Guard statistic post
I found an article over at the Sixers blog, and there is about a fan post a week over there. The guy made an (apparently fualty) way to break down point guards offensive contributions. He put a ton of work into it and the only comments he got was about how Miller sucks. Check it out, and rec it if you could. It would be the first rec'ed fan post of that blog. It's only been around for about a month or so, but this guy deserves it. There was more, but I cut the fat, made it a junk drawer are the same time as deadprez, so now you just get the fat cut version.

Why isn't my html working?
That’s right, right? Here’s the straight link, so you don’t have to do the cut and paste deal:

It doesn't look like the number of missed shots is being factored in at all
If a player is missing a lot of shots, then they are wasting possessions. Likewise if they pass to someone who misses a shot, then that is a wasted possession as well. If you don’t take this into account then you aren’t going to get a very good estimate of how well a player is performing. It is possible to score a lot of points by taking a huge number of bad shots, and it is possible to get a lot of assists by setting up teammates with a lot of fairly difficult shots, but doing either of those things won’t help the team win.

How would you figure that out?
He didn’t go into assists that lead to free throws either because there aren’t stats for that kind of stuff. Whether difficult shots are made as a result of a pass or easy ones are missed and vice-versa, I think it all evens out statistically in the end. Asking that from him, he would have to dissect every single game that every point guard played and every pass they made. No one does that, even people who get paid to. I do think passes that lead to free throws should be counted as an assist though, unless Dwight Howard is the one taking the free throw shots.

It's difficult
You can easily find out how many field goal attempts a player has made, but as you said the number of “potentially assisted” field goal attempts made by teammates is more difficult to figure out. A good starting point would be to review this study done by 82games.com.

Nice
One thing he didn’t add to the equation is that, IMO, a good point guard makes everybody else better even when they are not getting an assist on a play. By spreading the offense around, a good PG encourages players to move without the ball and that can be contagious and even lead to players being more active on defense.
It would be tough to measure this effect, though, unless you based it on +/- stats.
I wanted to rec the post, but I didn’t want to join the blog to do it.

Where's the love?
That guy spent the better part of a day making that for the 3 people who visit that blog. You can’t take 2 minutes (if that) to join the blog and rec it?

Why do you think we hired you to be our ambassador?
Mainly I just have an aversion to signing up for new stuff. That includes promotional charge cards, complimentary subscriptions, and frequent coffee buyer discount cards as well as more blogs. I’m not a Sixers fan and I will probably never visit that site again. I’m betting that the author of the post enjoyed working on it and that is his real reward. Or it should be, anyhow…

Poor guy...
He did all this work and I think he re-created the +/- system.
Still, it was a fun read and I ran over there and rec’ed it.

Marc Gasol“s formula.
Asked about his way to succeed, Marc Gasol said: "If the coach asks me for banging my own head 200 times, I do it. Even more, I do it 500 times."
