I hear so many people at this site and elsewhere who have concluded that Greg Oden is a bust. This after he's played a few preseason games and part of a quarter of a real NBA game. And that after sitting out a full season with injury. Well, for those of you with Coincast, tonight at 9:30 (and again @ 9 am Friday) is your chance to refresh your (clearly challenged) memories. They're replaying the '07 NCAA championship game, Florida vs Ohio State.
Yes, GO's team lost that game. But GO absolutely dominated two of the top bigs in the country--Noah and Horford. Both those guys are now solid NBA players--Horford especially. Yet they looked like little kids against Oden.
So forget what you've glimpsed of the big guy in his ridiculously brief stints as a Blazer. Watch tonight and refresh your memory regarding what kind of talent this 20-year-old kid possesses. It will still be months before GO completes his recovery from microfracture surgery, gets into basketball shape, and begins to get over his rookie jitters and adapt to the NBA. But when that happens, you'll be reminded of why this city went crazy on draft day back in '07.
That is, unless the unrelenting pressure that's been applied to GO since the day he got here suffocates him. As I've posted elsewhere, Blazer fans and media are looking this gift horse so closely in the mouth that they're threatening to choke him! If all the scrutiny and criticism turns GO into a basket case and he ends up moving on after his rookie contract ends--and winning his championships elsewhere--we'll have only ourselves to blame.
