did nate just blow another game for us?
Everything was ok untill nate decided to leave nick out for the entire 2nd half. noone else but pryz was getting any rebounds. i dont want to hear about 4th quarter experience, travis played ok but mabey he doesnt have any 4th quarter defense experience. yeah the rudy roy combo didnt work so well. i think you need to surround rudy with fast weapons and though aldridge looked good tonite. i cant wait to see him back with martell and or nick. could have used alittle more sergio tonite too. what do u think?

Could not agree more.
Also, to me it looked like Roy was not comfortable with Rudy in the game.
By the way, longtime reader but this is my first comment!

It may not have made a difference either way
The only good reason to continue to play Outlaw so much over Batum is if we really are trying to get Travis looking good for a early season trade…
Otherwise.. trust the go get it guy.. Batum!

I wasn't thrilled with the refs either, but...
The refs didn’t cause Portland to lose their scrappiness and go cold in the 4th.
Not saying Nate did either (though Batum and Rudy really are the scrappy players). But Portland could have beaten Utah, refs or no.

I thought the same thing
It seems outlaw played very madiocre, he had a couple good moments, and a couple terrible ones that really hurt us..fouls, turnovers, so much for his unblockable shot… people this season have really caught onto him.

Well, here's the thing...
if you’re Nate, and you’re ahead of the Jazz on thier home court, and it’s late in the game, do you go with a guy that has been there before and that can (not will, but can) be effective, or do you go with the rookie, a kid you’ve seen very little of, who you really don’t know what to expect offensively from?
If I’m Nate and I’m 4 games into the season, I probably go with what I know. You gotta think that if Nate does go with the rookie and we lose that he probably gets some flack from the media for putting in the untested kid.

Nate has seen a LOT of Batum.
While he hasn’t played too many minutes in actual games, he has played many scrimmages and probably guarded Outlaw or the players Outlaw would ordinarily guard.
I think I’d put in the rookie that has no scouting report yet rather than the “vet” that Utah has already figured out. Nate should have a pretty good idea of how Boom Boom will react, and Sloan would have NO idea.

I don't think any coach in the league...
goes with a rookie in the 4th quarter whose offensive game is a complete unknown.
In the 4th quarter, we needed points. We struggled to get 18.
Martell needs to get healthy yesterday.

If your team is struggling...
Why not try every alternative?
And like I said, I doubt Batum’s offensive game is a complete unknown to Nate.

I will probably feel the same way that you do...
if this becomes a pattern. If we’re in the same boat tomorrow night (which we will be), we’ll see if Nate makes any adjustments.
Four games in, with our starting SF out… I’m not that worried about it. It’s possible Portland is trying to showcase Outlaw.

This reminds me of last year
Everyone was irate at Nate for keeping Travis in in the 4th quarter. Then, all of the sudden, Travis wins a handful of games by himself in the 4th. Then it sparks a 13 game win streak. But, I guess it’s just one of those we’ll see things again this year.

good point.
Also happening with regularity last year was the Nate has a mancrush on Jack thing…
You know what they say… winning cures everything. We need to get out of the brutal stretch and get us some creme puffs.

something to be said
for going with what works in any given game. Batum looked fantastic in first half. And made whole offense look good. If things are slipping away in 4th quarter, at least give him a chance.

Something to be said at looking in the past to find out the future too
I mean seriously, this was gonna be a tough game. You have two options. You can put in the guy who can create a mismatch anywhere on the floor if he gets going, or the rookie who has shown that he can be solid at times. This, mind you, is against a better opponent (make no mistake, the Jazz are definitely on a different level than the Blazers are right now), and Travis has a habit of pulling through in the clutch. Also, mind you again, that once Travis is in and the plan starts to slip, the person better equipped to pull the team’s hide out of the fire is, once again, Travis. Had Batum been in there the whole time, well, who knows what would have happened. I doubt that the results would have been different. However that is just a speculation, while looking back at this game it is easy to see what did happen and what didn’t work, however your speculation still holds no more bearing on the reality of the situation.

Blake was 5-10, 3-5 from 3, and hit his 3 free throws for 16 points. What do you mean his shot’s not falling?

Not Nate
After watching that game I am simply amazed at how out of sync the players are. There were fast break opportunities that were blown because players didn’t know what to do or where to move and that’s not Nate. I’ll probably write about it tomorrow after I chill a bit. To some up my thoughts from watching, the cheerleaders had better outfits, but still ugly, the mascot sucks and should be shot, and the blazers have some talent but are AMAZINGLY raw. I am officially moving away from my stance of " we don’t need a veteran". This game made it painfully obvious that we do need someone out there to direct and help teach these guys on the floor. I’m going to sleep and breath and revisit my thoughts in the morning. I new we’d lose in the 2nd half because we never controlled this game.

That said
Batum did some nice things out there AND he made some mistakes, but Nate should have kept him in. He was hustling and moving and didn’t go THAT far beyond himself to deserve being pulled out.

I dont think we have really learned how to grind games out yet.
We beat san antonio, but still. The missing piece to the puzzle is a point gaurd who can create for everyone. Even when blake has great shooting games it doesnt do a whole lot for the team. the refs did play a factor also.

Sergio is a defensive liability which is why he doesnt play the 4th quarter
paradoxically so is Travis so the rationality behind playing Travis THE ENTIRE 4TH QT. when he isnt even shooting well is non existant.
Im livid to say the least.

Putting in the better defender doesn't necessarily help when you need points.
In the 4th quarter specifically, we needed points. Batum is an OFFENSIVE liability right now.

I agree . Batum's shot is, um , needing development
and I dont really think he will ever be an awesome scorer. But, Rudy was shooting the ball well besides that 3 that would have tied it, and Blake was doing ok shooting it so Minus Travis’ points in the 4th qt. (not many) turnovers that led to points and horrendous defense. Add stellar defense good passing , up the court quick and mover off the ball we could have won.
Seriously. I thought Travis, in his defense, had a bad game overall, but he should not have been playing down the stretch. I know why Nate gave him those minutes, b/c Batum is raw but Travis was a noticeable detriment.

Travis is not good at defense to put it nicely...
and I love Batum… maybe more than you.

Travis had 2 fowls at the beginning of the 4th qt. At 7 minutes left we were in the penalty
so yeah untimely fowls for certain.

theoretically...
I’m anxious to see how he turns out.
I don’t think we had too much trouble defending the guards tonight, though. It was their bigs that were destroying us in the 4th… Okur, Boozer, Kirilenko. They laid the heavy lumber. Travis can’t defend, and Batum is an unknown quantity offensively.
The Jazz are a title contender for a reason. They’re good.

This post seems a little far fetched
I’m not arguing that there weren’t some questionable adjustments in the game. Though I’m not arguing that there were either. Hindsight is 20/20, but homer goggles make it even better than that, right? (don’t worry, I’m one too, I’ve just come to grips with it.) Anyway, the thing that is really striking to me is the idea that you, the fans, 4 games in have seen more of the rookie, also 4 games in, than the coach, and you know more of what to expect and how to play him. The professional NBA coach. The guy who is building the game plan and has to live with the decisions he makes. The guy who has spent a ton of hours working with both of these players. The guy who has millions of dollars in salary (and even more than that) pending on the results that he produces. Yes, what happened tonight was a terrible way to lose, but staying in a game like this (do I really have to lay out the enormity of the challenge this team was presented with tonight?) isn’t something to be this upset about. Moreover, to say that you are a better judge of how the rookie will react if put in a certain in game situation than Nate does is just unrealistic.

This is gonna get very annoying if someone makes a fan post everytime the Blazers lose and begin blaming Nate for the loss.
Hint: It’s very rarely Nate’s fault.
Tonight was just a case of the Jazz being a better team.

No. Nate did not lose this game for us.
I thought he did a pretty good job of trying different line ups to try and find one that worked. Yeah the decision to put Travis in annoyed me, but Travis was mr. 4th quarter last year, and you go with what you know. The players lost this game for us. They just got out grinded. The Jazz are tough at home. They will themselves to victory, and we just got punched in the face and couldn’t punch back. Also Travis’s 2 quick fouls didn’t help, but I don’t blame Nate for that. He was just trying to use all his assets.

This is the 3rd game in a row
that we had the lead at the half. All of that has been accomplished by using our regular units in their proper orders. In each of the games Nate has completely messed up the 3rd and 4th quarters trying to reinvent the wheel. Nate is being completely reactionary (someone compared him to Avery Johnson, and I think there is some validity to that), and isn’t playing to the strengths of our own team. With the way things look now, for at least the next 2 months our lineups will be in a constant state of flux. We don’t need to feed that machine anymore than it will already be fed. We need our coach to implement some consistency in the units, and to stay true to those units throughout the entirety of games. With our given personnel its not rocket science. Just let the fits be fits. Quit trying to out think the room.

Batum clearly belongs on the floor
Travis doesn’t know where he belongs…he ran over our point guard (blake) somewhere in the 4th quarter…
I don’t care what he did out there last year..he doesn’t mesh with the offense at all, his D is marginal, his rebounding isn’t like Nic’s…the idea that he MIGHT be a better isolation player in the last seconds does not make up for the liability he is all the rest of the time.
Handing him the ball and hoping he might create something beause it’s the 4th quarter is a rediculous offensive plan..bringing him in in certain set plays in pressure situations might be worthwhile if you are gonna bnk on his past performance as a solid predictor of he present, but having him out there the whole fourt quarter cost more than one or two shots could make up for.
Batum adds intangibles that make everyone else around him look better — TO does the opposite and it shows..am i supposed to believe that that was the “clutch” team out there? by what measure? And why predict that Batum can only produce in the first half? do they rearrange the basket for the 4th quarter? heavier ball or something?
Nic was the thing that made it all work — Off rbds, tipped balls, defensive stops, blocked shots, proper floor spacing — b a s k e t b a l l — not continuing to use him in that game was a poor coaching decision ESPECIALLY after the team demonstrated 0 cohesiveness and flow… it was made by thinking rather than by observation
that is a 19 yo rookie shouldn’t be depended on, might make mistakes, might could should — whatever — the observations were that he was contributing in ways no one else was and that his spark mighta helped win the game. how will we ever know if he is a pressure player if we won’t put him in pressure situations?
