You think I know the first thing about how hard your life has been, how you feel, who you are, because I read Oliver Twist? Does that encapsulate you? Personally... I don't give a $hit about all that, because you know what, I can't learn anything from you, I can't read in some fukin' book. Unless you want to talk about you, who you are. Then I'm fascinated. I'm in. But you don't want to do that do you sport? You're terrified of what you might say. Your move, chief.

I don't give a $hit about all that, because you know what, I can't learn anything from you, I can't read in some fukin' book. Unless you want to talk about you, who you are. Then I'm fascinated. that is a game we absolutely should have won

the jazz are not that great. they didn’t play a terrific game. they were without deron williams.

A few patterns are forming:

- Roy is not the player he was last year. He’s worse…so far
- Our defense is a disaster. shots are not contested, too many easy baskets
- travis outlaw is a man without a nation. he does not fit on the white or black unit. Rudy and batum are better for this team
- our second unit needs joel for rebounding. Frye is a zero on the boards
- still way too many jumpshots for a team that has people that can get to the rack like Rudy and Roy. We should be getting far more free throws.
- the refs are certainly treating us like the team of the future…not a team they respect now

by hawkblogger on Nov 5, 2008 8:37 PM PST reply actions

the Jazz are a good team

for one, conference champs can win without one of their top players—that’s what good teams do.

for another, they can win without having to play a great game—that’s what good teams do.

this is also why we’re not yet as good as the Jazz.

Why are people saying, well, we didn't expect to win this game, so losing is ok?

I haven’t liked any of the games we have played so far including the Spurs game. This team is lacking in urgency and passion. They are running through the motions without a leader on the court. The team is getting shredded on D and the offense is still reliant on hot outside shooting. Rotations are a mess and players are taking bad shots especially Outlaw and Frye.

Stop living in the 13 game winning streak. That was not the real team. This team has systemic and personnel problems that Oden cannot magically solve. LMA is not blocking out his man, Blake is doing nothing besides making 3’s, Roy is playing too passive, and Nate’s rotations are all over the place. I hoping Nate and KP sees the same problems we all see. The cake should not be baked yet, we don’t have the right ingredients.

BINGO, BANGO, BONGO

by blzrfan on Nov 5, 2008 8:59 PM PST reply actions

That's still no excuse for how they played

I agree with blzrfan, this team too easily loses it’s fire. They should not be shooting so many jumpers. Especially with Roy and Aldridge on the floor…both could get a shot inside 10 feet anytime they wanted.

by JasonT on Nov 5, 2008 9:11 PM PST up reply actions

whether or not you think it's an "excuse"

it is the reason why complaining about “Nate’s rotations” is pointless. they have a bunch of new guys who only just learned the system. then two of the starters in that system go out. that’s going to mess with the system, plain and simple.

by abdelnaby on Nov 5, 2008 9:13 PM PST up reply actions

I care less about the rotations

than the shot selection. If continue to be a jump shooting team, we will not make the playoffs. Getting to the basket for inside shots is as much about effort as it is execution.

by JasonT on Nov 5, 2008 9:16 PM PST up reply actions

by RipCity on Nov 5, 2008 9:16 PM PST up reply actions

but

Oden didnt really play with us to get used to him anyways. Plus if it mess with our chemistry why not mess with utah chemistry when Williams is out?

by RipCity on Nov 5, 2008 9:14 PM PST up reply actions

it's not a question of whether you're used to a player's tendencies

that won’t come for a year or two, at best. it’s a question of offensive and defensive schemes where everyone has a set role. for example, Nate had said he planned on playing LMA and Frye exclusively at the 4. with Oden down, they’re now seeing time at the 5, where clearly neither belongs and neither fully schemed for in camp. meanwhile Travis has to slide up to the 4. it weakens your execution. a veteran team can compensate for that relatively smoothly, but we’re the second youngest team in the league with four rookies.

Poopy set offense Blazers.

Pretty easy to scout when you know they’re going to do 1 5 things…

Isolate Roy – he takes the shot
Isolate Roy – he drives and passes to the outside jump shooter
Isolate LA – he takes the shot
Isolate LA – he passes to the outside jump shooter
Give ball to Outlaw, let him dribble for awhile and take the 20 foot floater

Dear people w/o the ball:

Learn to cut to the hoop
Learn to run off of picks

Only four games in, don’t care about the win/loss – but they looked ugly out there – period.
The Jazz even looked bad – they just were the scrappier (see Batum) team in the 2nd half.

It feels like the fairweather fans

I think once we get the rotations down, and Batum gets equal playing time to Outlaw, we will really improve. Utah is undefeated right now, dont forget that.

Hmmmmm…..where have heard that one. Oh yea, if you criticize America, you are not a patriot and hate this country. Am I doing it right?

I expected to lose tonights game...

but I didn’t expect Nate to coach like it was his first game. Is there a reason you play Steve Blake the final 14 minutes of the game, when we have tons of perfectly capable players to put out there (especially when Roy is our 4th quarter PG anyway). Outlaw’s minutes are just flat unearned at this point. Batum is outplaying him in every way. Frye isn’t doing anything out there, and he’s a terrible defensive 4. Why is Rudy playing just 27 minutes? When that happens your rotation is off. What happened to the consistency Nate used to use? It should be a pretty easy cycle to go through. I was expecting Nate to be one of the best coaches in the league so far. At this point it’d be hard not to call him one of the worst.

you know

I didn’t expect blazers to win either. But when they are up bu 11 points its a different story. You can adjust your expectations as needed, cant be a robot you know?

I was ok with Nate playing Blake

He was shooting great in the first half.

But Blake played, and no longer got any open shots. Either Utah adjusted their defensive schemes, Nate didn’t run any plays for Blake, or both.

I’m not sure Sergio or Bayless would have been better, but if the PG was no longer shooting, Blake’s advantage over Sergio is reduced. I’d be interested in seeing the other PG’s.

I know I'm a broken record on this, but I'll say it again...

……………………….. The Blazers have The Guy on the bench. Rex. Nate doesn’t trust rookies and he REALLY doesn’t trust rookie PGs. And I guarantee you that there are tons of rookie mistakes and assorted catastrophes to come, he’s not going to be a polished player at his age and with his experience. But remember this always: he has IT. Lots and lots of IT.

At a certain point this year Mr. Urgency, Mr. In-Your-Face, Mr. Take-It-To-The-Rack is gonna get his minutes, find his NBA legs, and take over the PG spot on this team. Hopefully sooner rather than later (Rice indicated on Courtside that Rex is working his way into good graces at practice). Blake is a good enough player and in the first half we saw what he can do — hit the long, open jumper with consistency. But 4th Q BB is totally different, maaaaan. I WANT A TONY PARKER TYPE. He’s there. He’s on the bench. He’s an elite draft pick. Patience, but not too much patience!!!

I don’t care if he can’t pass as well as Sergio. That’s not what this team is missing. In the 4th Q especially, it’s about kamikazi action into the paint, either finishing with a foul or a kick out pass for an open look. (Note tonight how Brandon started crashing the lane in the 4th Q — now imagine how it might be if Brandon had someone to play off with a similar capability).

Late in the games Rudy is going to be the de facto 3 — outside jumpers with a capability to crash the boards.

The real problem with this team is the play of LMA in the paint. I still think it’s a coaching thing. As for Channing, I love the guy as a human being, but he needs to play elsewhere… Travis is a great tool off the bench, but he’s a desperation weapon because he’s a shameless gunner (although tonight wasn’t on him in any way, in my opinion).

Anyway…

This is probably a good time to point at that....

Bayless has already gotten a couple opportunities this season. He has logged 21 minutes more than he should have received at this point, and he has done nothing with them. He is 1-6, which equals 16%(CLANK!), and has 1 assist to 2 turnovers. Not exactly the type of performance that screams: this player has IT!!!! He might get there, but it won’t be this season, he is a 6’3 Travis Outlaw trying to play point guard. His time will come, but it isn’t right now….

RUDY > MJ

by myemic23 on Nov 5, 2008 10:03 PM PST up reply actions

that is consistency

Travis was on Nate’s fourth quarter unit last year. Blake is the starter and most experienced 1, and was shooting over 50% on the night. who would you put in over Frye, Ike? Shavlik? consistency is not juggling in Sergio or Bayless or playing Rudy 40 minutes on the first night of a back to back.

you want to judge Nate as a coach? that inbounds play to set up the Rudy 3 was the right call at the right time, and the team was able to run it to perfection. Rudy didn’t hit the shot. I don’t see how that’s on Nate.

What

I notice is that Nate says before the game that they will concentrate on play good defense in the paint. He says that they will focus to go inside and not settle for jumpers. And the team does totally oposite, cant stop nobody inside and cant stop shooting jumpers.

Right, first thing you do when your up by 11

Is park your best defensive player on the bench and play your worst defensive player/gunner so they can abuse him on D while he chucks hero bricks, but he is Roys best pal so you cant hurt his feelings

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
