The minute crunch is much worse than last year. Go ahead and try to stick that Martell Webster slice back into the lineup. It’s pretty much impossible. Do you want Batum to play more than 14 minutes a game? Me too.
Last year when I posted the first pie chart, most people came to the conclusion that Jack and Jones were the most likely to leave the team. Looking at this new chart I would say Outlaw and Frye have the biggest chance of getting the boot, but maybe not both of them. It also seems pretty clear that we have way too many point guards.

Interesting.
Of course, you have Oden down for 13 minutes, which is all he’s played all season, not per game.
If I looked at this chart, and my jersey read “Diogu,” I’d be on the phone with my agent to talk trades.
As far as trades go, wonder what we could get for Sergio and Diogu together? We need more PF types, I think….

close to nothing
i dont think we would get any serviceable players for both of them…all teams have project players on board. could they thrive under a different uniform? yes…will we get much for em? probably not as neither are established.

Great way to put into colorful detail why Outlaw will be traded.

Yeah
You’ll have to put Oden around 28-30 minutes per game too after he recovers.

The Oden pie piece needs to be bigger than the Joel piece soon
Roy, LMA for 35. Rudy, Martell, Travis, Greg and Blake for 25. Nic, Joel for 20. Channing and Sergio/Bayless for 15. Do we still have minutes left?
by Norsktroll on Nov 5, 2008 4:37 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Keep in mind that it’s not a pie chart of the rotation.
There are only 48 minutes per game, but people sneak in minutes when other players are injured. I left it that way to give more flexibility when considering guys like Frye who might get a lot more minutes than just their normal rotation minutes because of injuries to the roster.

It looks to me that
If the Bayless, Batum, Frye, and Pryzbilla pieces were removed, the Oden and Webster pieces would fit in nicely. We should trade them for a savvy vet with court smarts.
This space for rent, text me for information.

I don't understand
If you were to trade those guys for a player with court smarts, then you’d have to play that player, which again cuts into our limited minutes. So here are the options as I see it.
Option 1: We start playing more overtime games to make sure we have more minutes. Double overtime would be even better. Since we can’t be guaranteed that we’ll make it to overtime, perhaps we should wait to play our least important players until the OT periods to make sure our main guys get their minutes first.
Option 2: When Oden and Martel get back, we just replace other players who are currently getting about as many minutes but aren’t as awesome. So for Oden, I’ve pretty much decided that Steve Blake isn’t as rad, so perhaps we should start running Oden at the point and Blake can go on the IL. Minute jam solved for Oden! Wow, that was easy. I could try the same trick for Webster but my brain hurts now and I don’t want to make Nate’s job too easy for him, so this one is on his shoulders.

Frye won't go anywhere
simply because moving him wont free up much time for others. Blake & Outlaw have a lot of that pie.
This is why I think we should phase in Rudy/Roy as the double combo PG/SG. Rudy takes over Blake’s part of the pie and then we can trade one of Sergio/Bayless/Blake and leave the other 2 with the smaller slices. Rudy’s minutes basically roll over to Webster.
This post is exactly why I’ve been hammering for a trade. There aren’t enough minutes to go around and if we keep someone on the bench, their value goes down. We should package Diogu, a SF (Outlaw?), and a PG to get someone who can really do great things with Outlaw’s allotment. Read: a defense-first 3 pt specialist a la James Posey.

I like it
I think we could wrap up enough of these guys to get Posey or Thadeous Young. To drop a lot of these guys, you would have to be dealing with a team that doesn’t really have a lot of depth. Are the hornets in that boat? I mean they have a pretty good PG behind Chris Paul who doesn’t see enough time as it is, though I can’t remember his name. I know about the Sixers because I am the ambassador over there and Thad is a stud. They wouldn’t part with him cheaply though. Someone should do a post on some possible trades toclear up our log jams. I mean there can’t be that many SFs or PGs who would be likely candidates out there, right? It’s difficult to picture who we should give up without balancing that with who we should get in return. Of course, this idea comes to me while I’m responding to one of the few people who actually suggested a player. I’ll admit I’m far too lazy to do every thing I suggested and I can’t even watch most of the games here to even try and delve into something like that, but there I go, spitting out the same thing I just told you not to do in the comment below. Hypocrisy prevails.

right
I didn’t mean we should specifically target Posey—I don’t think that he’s anywhere near available. I too would like to see said list of SFs/PGs that would fit our system and what it would take to get them but don’t have the time to follow through myself.
But this issue really gets at the heart of the matter. Right now, we don’t have a solid rotation and we have some solidified slots (SG, PF, C) and some that are completely up in the air (PG, SF). We don’t have a solid starter, we have 3 backup SFs. We don’t have a solid starter PG, we have 3 backups. Maybe Martell will prove me wrong when he gets here, but there is for sure no reason Batum or Outlaw should be. And at PG, the problems are obvious.
by nima on Nov 8, 2008 8:06 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
why don't you take this post a step further
and basically solidify the parts of the pie that we know are not up for grabs..Put Rudy’s 27, Roy’s 35, LMA’s 35, Oden+Pryz’s ~48 all together and lets just look at the slice that remains and we can talk about how that should be divied up.

By my calc that leaves 95 minutes for everyone.
I’d say:
Blake – 20
Sergio – 13
Bayless – NBDL
Webster – 20
Batum – 14
Outlaw – 14
Frye – 14
Diogu – 0

Keep Key Players Healthy
I know this may sound criminal, but I believe the team should keep Roy and Aldridge’s minutes down from last year. Maybe play them an average of 32 minutes each. Once Oden is back and healthy this shouldn’t be a problem. This frees up some, albeit minimal, minutes for other players. Every minute counts! With Roy out and Rudy in there isn’t much of a drop off in production. We lose more with Aldridge out, but with the second unit we play an uptempo game that can disrupt our opponents. I believe the Blazers need to consider the long-term health of our star players especially given their injury prone nature. We have a deep, talented team and I think we should take advantage of it!

I don't think we know enough yet to make trades
Sergio and Outlaw seem to be stepping up their games, Frye is in a slump coming off an injury, Bayless hasn’t played. We don’t know who will complement Oden best. Martell hasn’t played.
Unless something too good to refuse comes along, there’s still some evaluating to do, if for no other reason than to be sure the team gets good value when it does trade.
