11/3 - Blazer Courtside Monday
November 4, 2008, D69 —
Courtside Monday Night
6PM PST
Hosts: Mike Barratt, Mike Rice, Brian Wheeler
courtside@blazers.com
Next week will be on Tuesday, Nov 11th for Courtside due to Monday’s game.
Summary
Nate McMillian interview – Wants the team to be aggressive. Was hoping for Sunday, but it will be another week before Oden can play in a game. Batum will start in Utah game.
Henry Abbott interview – Thinks Detroit got the better end of the trade of Iverson for Billups. Does think it makes Denver a playoff team now. David Thorp thinks Oden may never become a reliable contributor with his injuries. Once one big trade happens, other GMs start talking.
Jerry Schemmel – Denver announcer - interview – thinks trade was good for Denver and makes them a legit playoff team. George Karl can go back to coaching a regular back court.
Ask Confucius (aka Mike Rice) – Kirk Hinrich will be traded before November 15th. Travis Outlaw as a Blazer after Dec. 1st is cloudy. Batum will be in the top 4 for votes for ROY. Jerryd Bayless very close to be a starter before the end of the season. Greg will not play until the third game of the road trip.
Mike Rice – no to Mike Conley & Jason Kidd (too young and too old). Kirk Hinrich for Travis Outlaw? Hinrich would be closer to what the Blazers are looking for.
First 18 games – 6 to 7 wins
More? – Good comments on Batum, blazer practices, Greg Oden. Also, Maurice is getting better from his unknown virus.
Could we get Hinrich without giving up RLEC?
Blake and Outlaw for Hinrich sounds great. Nate doesn’t think our backup PG spot will never get more than 10 minutes a game on a regular basis. This pretty much means that Blake, Bayless, and Sergio are out unless:
a. One of them becomes a legit starter.
b. One of them is happy with ten minutes a game.
Bayless and Sergio will never be happy with ten minutes a game and Blake is too expensive for that role. I guess Bayless and Sergio could become legit starters, but Blake has probably peaked. The Blazers need a good defensive PG and I can’t think of another one who fits the bill better than Hinrich, at least not one who is available.

Blake isn't too expensive
10 mpg backup, but the ability to step in and do a decent job as starter in case of an injury? At $4 million a year, that’s not horribly expensive for that kind of role.
We might do a trade, but if we don’t, I expect either Bayless or Sergio to take the starter job by sometime next year (I expect Bayless). I could easily see Blake slotting into the backup PG role.
It’s possible both of them will pass Blake, of course. But if that happens, one of them might be traded, too.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.
From the Bulls perspective, they don't need Blake (backup to Rose) and Travis (backup to Deng)
They need someone to take the horrid contracts of Noce or Hughes off their hands, and a low post presence. If Oden was in top form and we could move Joel they would probably bite, but not for an offer like this when they also must fear Gordon walks away next summer.
Even with Gordon walking away they have too many guards.
Hughes can still play and they seem pretty high on Sefolosha.
