Is Roy hurt?

I’m only following the box score, why has Rudy been in so much? (not too much, but more than usual I think)

May I say ... Heck Yeah!

It was a great 1st half.
They figured us out a little early in the 2nd. But we roared back.

Stay with what's working

Nate needs to stay away from his urge to play the bench so much. The starting five got them the lead, but when the bench gives up the lead he needs to go back to what worked. Hopefully we see more of the starting 5 in the second half. The bench can redeem themselves in the next game after we beat the Pistons. Watch out for Roy in the second half.

typically with Nate, that’d be Batum’s total minutes for the game, even when Batum is really doing well!

by 22baylor on Nov 30, 2008 5:48 PM PST up reply actions

Really?

Here is the statistical comparison:

Gross vs Wallace

These guys are actually pretty easy to compare, because they each played about seven years with the Blazers.

Gross averaged 9.2, 3.0, and 4.5 for the Blazers, while Sheed averaged 16.5, 2.0, and 6.9. If you go by pure numbers, Rasheed has him beat by a long shot. If you include other factors, okay, Sheed is probably not the most deserving Blazer. But I have to think that there is some balance between stats and intangibles that has to be struck in order for jersey retirement to be in order.

I think the question this really hinges on is “does simply being part of a championship team make a player worthy of jersey retirement?” I don’t think so, but apparently someone in the Blazer front office thinks otherwise.

Rice blamed the Spaniards for that Outlaw turnover

which is ridiculous. Outlaw did TWO things incredibly wrong:

1) He passed half-court, reducing the area available for the guards to get the ball in half, and

2) He picked up his dribble in the corner, making it virtually impossible for anyone to create a passing lane.

2. Statistically, the poorest shooter on the team (35%).

3. Having a bad afternoon with the handle (3 TOs).

Hollinger's rankings are no joke

Portland has been the 4th best team in the league so far. Doesn’t mean we’ll be one of the top 4 at the end, but playing nearly a quarter of the season as the 4th best team is mighty impressive. Kudos to KP, Nate, Roy and the whole organization.

This is a great start to the trip- puts us in position for a 3-2 trip which would be great. 4-1 is a possibility and that would be phenomenal. Even 2-3 wouldn’t be terrible.

I can only find one place in Adams Morgan with League Pass – that sports bar Ventnor on 18th. See you there in January? The staff always puts PTB games on for me, in a set on the side where I can yell and scream as much as I like

The owner, a little guy Scott, told me Oden was a bust. I am having a friend who runs the pottery studio on 17th and Kalorama make a me a tiny Greg Oden bust to give him, as soon as GO goes bananas on his 76ers (owners a Philly Phan)

They’re just another team in the NBA. One of 30. I’m not going to give them the satisfaction of me thinking they’re special. Can you imagine if some other team’s blog was so scared and hateful towards the Blazers that they spelled it Bl*zers? We’d laugh in their face and feel great about our team for being so intimidating and awesome. I’m not going to contribute to the mystification of the Lakers. It’s superstitious nonsense.

by Jumbo on Nov 30, 2008 2:41 PM PST up reply actions

Disagree.

The establishment of a long-hated rival is what separates good fanbases from great fanbases. Look at Red Sox/Yankees, Dodger/Giants, Cardinals/Cubs (sorry, I’ve been a baseball fan longer than a basketball fan.) It gives meaning to meaningless games. I’d really prefer that our rival be the J*zz, but the consensus seems to be the Lakers (though they have a deeper, hotter rivalry with the Celtics we can’t touch.)

by RipCity on Nov 30, 2008 2:49 PM PST reply actions

In fact

I’ve noticed this year in particular, Roy going out of his way to challenge and face down other teams’ superstars. He’s sending a message to the league.

by zaruga on Nov 30, 2008 2:52 PM PST up reply actions

Very much so

Roy has commented this season that he’s let go of his fear of failure, and wants the ball MORE with the game on the line. Which is scary considering how good he was in the past.

It was really obvious in this game. He’d run over and ASK for the ball from our PG, and just take over.

by Timmay! on Nov 30, 2008 2:54 PM PST up reply actions

Thats what changed in Roy this

In the Miami game he did little, but that was when he didn't have to

He is often defending the other team’s best guard or even wing (today a lot against Rip and Prince). And his drives against slower defenders are just great to watch. Like with the really big ones, you know what’s coming and you can do nothing against it.

by Norsktroll on Nov 30, 2008 3:07 PM PST up reply actions

I loved his work in the Miami game.

Seriously!

He knew the other players were on, and he fed them and deferred to them, knowing he really didn’t need to “get his”.

I really appreciated how he handled himself in the Miami game. I think someone like Wade or LBJ would be upset to not be in double-digits.

..what a game! It looked like Portland as trying to give it away, then Brandon took over. And while it’s obvious how young they are, Batum and Oden just scream “we’re going to dominate”

How sweet! Love those Piston possessions where they...

over-passed in the paint, and turned it over, because Oden was blocking out the freaking sun. The basketball equivalent of football’s “hearing footsteps”.

Beating the Pistons has a savory quality that I enjoy.

It's great to see how well prepared Portland was for this game

Sure, they had their cold spells, but they knew the offense they wanted to run, they knew match-ups they wanted to exploit. They seemed to know good shots from bad shots.

Portland has earned a top 5 rating

For the first time today, Hollinger’s #4 ranking doesn’t feel so unreasonable.

And hey, this is the first game we’ve won with a margin between 10-19. Finally a game that’s neither a nail-biter nor a blow-out.

We had a bad stretch in the second

Otherwise, we traded punch for punch, then Brandon took over at the end.

Oden had a good game, he got schooled for drawn fouls a few times, but blocked AI’s drives a few times. Detroit had to clearly adjust for him.

Aldridge and Rasheed was a FUN matchup tonight

Aldridge got the best of it, but Rasheed got a great block on him, and hit multiple three’s.

it looked like Rash was setting a nice mood in the tip off joking around with Oden. I always loved Rash, despite his tendency to be a a little rough on the edges.

I saw that, and kept thinking Rasheed was saying...

“Hey Greg, I know the fans love you in Portland now, but they’ll turn on you like THAT. Not here in Detroit. They’re always great to you here. You’d love it here.”

Then I realized Rasheed will be leaving Detroit at the end of the year probably, and I haven’t seen signs he’s really that loyal to any area.

I liked that he made a few mental errors, then immediately made some good plays

He used to get down on himself after making a mistake or two. But not today.

This all may be related to how quickly he used to get yanked for a mistake, and how he gets to play out of it now, too.

by Timmay! on Nov 30, 2008 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah

Rudy was riding that intensity and adoration from the fans at the beginning of the season. He’ll get his head back. At least he’s sensitive when he’s shooting poorly; he only took 4 shots tonight.

rudy has made sergio look better too

there have been a couple times i’ve notice sergio trying to push the ball and then rudy communicates to back off and let the offense get set (per nate style), this has led to good looks usaully and a sergio dime or dare i say falling jumper!

by appel82 on Nov 30, 2008 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

Sergio made a lot more Nash/Parker style drives and short passes around the basket today

Often he just dribbles back to the halfcourt line and the clock ticks down while nothing happens. I like that Sergio much better, even if he does turn it over once or twice due to that.

by Norsktroll on Nov 30, 2008 3:30 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, but yet, not in the least!

They all know Martell. There will be an adjustment, but he’s been with them the whole time.

Remember when he played with them in the first preseason game?

I think there will be some fallout from the person whose minutes drop (Frye?), but Martell can slip into either Batum or Outlaw’s role nicely.

by Timmay! on Nov 30, 2008 3:07 PM PST up reply actions

frye would accept pine

i think travis will too — he can see how good batum is

ignacio

by ignacio on Nov 30, 2008 3:09 PM PST up reply actions

I think Frye would take the pine too

I think he’d privately talk to KP and Nate, and let them know he’d be open to being included in a trade if this is his fate. But he wouldn’t take it out on the team. Frye comes across as very classy in that way. Joel too.

I’m still a little worried about Travis. As long as he thinks his minutes will return, he’ll be cool. But if he stops getting 20-25 per game for a month or two, I’m worried he’ll lose his contentment.

I’m hopeful Travis would handle the situation similarly to Frye, but I don’t have as good a feel on him either way.

by Timmay! on Nov 30, 2008 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

ive stuck up for outlaw, but youre probably right

hes not playing well lately — hes not confident…. hes friends with brandon, so im sure brandon helps him read the tea leaves. it’s not exactly a mystery that batum has just outplayed him (though i was glad he hit those two 3s today)

i mean again, dont get me wrong

outlaw has done some GREAT things for us (hits big shots, won some games last year, and is a good guy again), but hes the only player on the team (well and sergio to an extent) that i cringe when he gets the ball. Hes a dribble away from losing it, and again the entire team stands and watches him cause they know he wont pass.

I like Travis a lot. But I've seen enough to know his fate

He reminds me a lot of Jack last year. A lot of good features, but one step forward, two back with him. KP has to be aware of it. I have a feeling Travis knows himself.

It was dropping, last I saw.

But if he realizes his spot-up shooting is his bread and butter, there will be teams lining up to get him, no matter his defense.

And I’d miss his good defensive plays. They just are often followed by total brain farts.

Batum is to Travis as AMD is to Intel

Outlaw is seeing what his competition is doing, and is working on his deficiencies.

That’s actually a big positive for Travis, not meant as an insult.

by Timmay! on Nov 30, 2008 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

a little bit

I’m not worried about Web, but I am worried about Batum/Outlaw. Batum needs to be on the floor and he has played better than Outlaw this season. Outlaw, by all accounts, is a key chemistry guy for the team but his minutes really should be cut— and perhaps he will even be traded.

Its certainly an issue to watch, but I’m confident the team will handle it.

It's not because I don't like what Nic is doing out there, I really do

Webster just looked good when driving to the rim and getting passes from Rudy. That would give us another option (driving and outside threat) while we work him back. Ultimately in January I think he will take back the starting spot for now.

Wow !

What a up & down game. The key item is that
our young Blazers (& Roy, Smooth, etc.) are starting
to believe thaey can beat anybody, home or on the road.
The exertion of WILL is an important part of developing that
killer instinct.
The White unit did not play well, but that’s to be expected
from time to time. GO is starting to move better and make good
decisions, Smooth had everything going (TOR just like Sheed)
and BRoy exerts himself when needed. Look out NBA !

I joked over here about one of his shots

He missed a three pointer and I said, “That’s the best time for Sergio to take that three… 2 seconds after the referees blew a whistle”.
