Good 1st Half overall
Bench was shaky. Stuckey was awesome. Pistons bench D very good. Blazers bench outside shooting and passing not so good.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
Is Roy hurt?
I’m only following the box score, why has Rudy been in so much? (not too much, but more than usual I think)
May I say ... Heck Yeah!
It was a great 1st half.
They figured us out a little early in the 2nd. But we roared back.

Or how Nate is increasing his trade value.
He’s getting good real estate to build on.
I heart taxes.
LOL
Lamarcus with zero boards. Guess Oden it hogging them all. Why was Broy out for the last 1:30 min? He is usually in during clutch time.

Nate ALMOST ALWAYS plays Sergio in the last 2 minutes of the first half (foul reasons).
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
you mean ALMOST never?
cause that is the truth. trust me, i’m certain.
"I saw him in the face." – Sergio, when asked about how the latest Rodriguez-to-Fernandez alley-oop came to be.
Stay with what's working
Nate needs to stay away from his urge to play the bench so much. The starting five got them the lead, but when the bench gives up the lead he needs to go back to what worked. Hopefully we see more of the starting 5 in the second half. The bench can redeem themselves in the next game after we beat the Pistons. Watch out for Roy in the second half.

I'm surprised Batum's already got almost 16 minutes...
typically with Nate, that’d be Batum’s total minutes for the game, even when Batum is really doing well!

Batum only needs a little over 6 more minutes for a new season high!

Uh, Pryz dorked two passes in the first half
from Rudy. I was the only one to mention it. I volunteer to be the Official Pryzhater. I like him but have a feeling he is part of Opus Dei or maybe the Knights Templar.
But he does have the And 1 tat. I wonder if that has something to do with the Trinity?

you have a short memory
- Elgin
All the kids who played the blues would learn my licks with a bottleneck slide. - Richard Palmer-James
Really?
Here is the statistical comparison:
These guys are actually pretty easy to compare, because they each played about seven years with the Blazers.
Gross averaged 9.2, 3.0, and 4.5 for the Blazers, while Sheed averaged 16.5, 2.0, and 6.9. If you go by pure numbers, Rasheed has him beat by a long shot. If you include other factors, okay, Sheed is probably not the most deserving Blazer. But I have to think that there is some balance between stats and intangibles that has to be struck in order for jersey retirement to be in order.
I think the question this really hinges on is “does simply being part of a championship team make a player worthy of jersey retirement?” I don’t think so, but apparently someone in the Blazer front office thinks otherwise.

Rice blamed the Spaniards for that Outlaw turnover
which is ridiculous. Outlaw did TWO things incredibly wrong:
1) He passed half-court, reducing the area available for the guards to get the ball in half, and
2) He picked up his dribble in the corner, making it virtually impossible for anyone to create a passing lane.

1. Missed 3 of 4 FTs, when every point counts.
2. Statistically, the poorest shooter on the team (35%).
3. Having a bad afternoon with the handle (3 TOs).

Portland has been the 4th best team in the league so far. Doesn’t mean we’ll be one of the top 4 at the end, but playing nearly a quarter of the season as the 4th best team is mighty impressive. Kudos to KP, Nate, Roy and the whole organization.
This is a great start to the trip- puts us in position for a 3-2 trip which would be great. 4-1 is a possibility and that would be phenomenal. Even 2-3 wouldn’t be terrible.

They’re just another team in the NBA. One of 30. I’m not going to give them the satisfaction of me thinking they’re special. Can you imagine if some other team’s blog was so scared and hateful towards the Blazers that they spelled it Bl*zers? We’d laugh in their face and feel great about our team for being so intimidating and awesome. I’m not going to contribute to the mystification of the Lakers. It’s superstitious nonsense.
Agreed there. It was a goofy Dave joke about swearing that has had its day
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
Disagree.
The establishment of a long-hated rival is what separates good fanbases from great fanbases. Look at Red Sox/Yankees, Dodger/Giants, Cardinals/Cubs (sorry, I’ve been a baseball fan longer than a basketball fan.) It gives meaning to meaningless games. I’d really prefer that our rival be the J*zz, but the consensus seems to be the Lakers (though they have a deeper, hotter rivalry with the Celtics we can’t touch.)

until we catch up to them I want them to beat our playoff spot rivals.

The bench had a terrible game
Look at those +/-’s
Look how lopsided the allocation of minutes was, Starters v. Bench...
Also notice the (career high?) minutes for Nic… And the guys feeling the brunt were Travis (<20) and Frye (6).
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
Travis
0 rebounds. C’mon kid. Unacceptable. I don’t care all that much what you do with your 5 fg attempts, but in 17 minutes you should more than zero rebounds.
I think Travis wants to stay in Portland
With the trade rumors he’s probably just tanking so his value goes down and we have to keep him.

Batum doesn't get scared of anything either
They say he’s like Tayshaun— and I agree— but he’s got that french fire burning under him.
Why should he?
They make pinot noir in Burgundy as well as Yamhill county, and some French pinots are as good as Oregon’s.

Big Difference A Year Makes...
when Pistons took a two point lead in the 4th quarter…the old Blazers would have folded…this year, no sweat…we bounce backed like veterans. This team has ice in their veins!
Seriosly
This is the first Blazer team I can see doing to others what the Lakers, Spurs, Ect. have done to us forever— Hitting those came closing threes (Stupid Robert Horry)
We went like this, he went like that. I say to Hollywood: Where'd he go? Hollywood says: where'd who go?
thats what Wheels said about the 6'8" great from michigan state when he hit a jumper
early in the 4th quarter to put us up by 15 against the lakers. Then we proceeded to blow it and the rest is history.
Remember that crazy post about which big 3 would you let go if you had to?
I think most people chose Roy to let go. That might been the craziest thing.
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
Most people erroneously assumed that because Roy had finished college and was already NBA he had already hit his ceiling.
And people have said this of him every year, and every year they’ve been wrong.
In fact
I’ve noticed this year in particular, Roy going out of his way to challenge and face down other teams’ superstars. He’s sending a message to the league.
Very much so
Roy has commented this season that he’s let go of his fear of failure, and wants the ball MORE with the game on the line. Which is scary considering how good he was in the past.
It was really obvious in this game. He’d run over and ASK for the ball from our PG, and just take over.
Thats what changed in Roy this
He has become like one of the super stars, and acts like one too.
He got a few calls like the super stars do.
He got to another level, and he wants to be the best
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
Brandon has moved from "star and potential superstar" to "authentic superstar" status...
………………………. and he has done it very quietly, putting up great numbers every night against every possible defender. No slumps.
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
In the Miami game he did little, but that was when he didn't have to
He is often defending the other team’s best guard or even wing (today a lot against Rip and Prince). And his drives against slower defenders are just great to watch. Like with the really big ones, you know what’s coming and you can do nothing against it.
I loved his work in the Miami game.
Seriously!
He knew the other players were on, and he fed them and deferred to them, knowing he really didn’t need to “get his”.
I really appreciated how he handled himself in the Miami game. I think someone like Wade or LBJ would be upset to not be in double-digits.
It was Kobe-esque...
…………………… There are nights when Kobe just throttles it back and sets up everyone else.
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
Just finished up the DVR...
..what a game! It looked like Portland as trying to give it away, then Brandon took over. And while it’s obvious how young they are, Batum and Oden just scream “we’re going to dominate”
Yep. Martell's going to have a fight for the starting SF position
Though I admit, I’m curious to see Martell’s growth. That first pregame, he looked GOOD.
Tough Today Run Tomorrow
Fantastic to watch the Blazers play tough today against the bad boys. Will be interesting to watch them run against the Knicks.
How sweet! Love those Piston possessions where they...
over-passed in the paint, and turned it over, because Oden was blocking out the freaking sun. The basketball equivalent of football’s “hearing footsteps”.
Beating the Pistons has a savory quality that I enjoy.

and he still can't jump
Wait until he’s recovered from surgery and doesn’t have to gather himself for every putbacik.
his VL looked good on that ticky tack foul where he came down on brown.
but brown isn’t a good measure for a high VL i guess
I think he can jump high
It’s just he has to bend to get the jump, so he brings the ball down when he’s getting ready to jump up.
He has such great touch too
For all the haters who say oden’s a solid defender but not much on offense: 5-6 free throws that hit nothing but net. Once he gets his NBA legs under him, and a hook he can depend on, watch out
Then again, he predicted during his injury year that he'd be a 10-12 ppg. guy, and that looks pretty darned correct. He's not a 20+ ppg force...
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
It's great to see how well prepared Portland was for this game
Sure, they had their cold spells, but they knew the offense they wanted to run, they knew match-ups they wanted to exploit. They seemed to know good shots from bad shots.

Portland has earned a top 5 rating
For the first time today, Hollinger’s #4 ranking doesn’t feel so unreasonable.
And hey, this is the first game we’ve won with a margin between 10-19. Finally a game that’s neither a nail-biter nor a blow-out.

We had a bad stretch in the second
Otherwise, we traded punch for punch, then Brandon took over at the end.
Oden had a good game, he got schooled for drawn fouls a few times, but blocked AI’s drives a few times. Detroit had to clearly adjust for him.

Aldridge and Rasheed was a FUN matchup tonight
Aldridge got the best of it, but Rasheed got a great block on him, and hit multiple three’s.
Good
it looked like Rash was setting a nice mood in the tip off joking around with Oden. I always loved Rash, despite his tendency to be a a little rough on the edges.

I saw that, and kept thinking Rasheed was saying...
“Hey Greg, I know the fans love you in Portland now, but they’ll turn on you like THAT. Not here in Detroit. They’re always great to you here. You’d love it here.”
Then I realized Rasheed will be leaving Detroit at the end of the year probably, and I haven’t seen signs he’s really that loyal to any area.
suddenly rudy looked more like a rookie than sergio
sergio has really got his mind right now
ignacio
I liked that he made a few mental errors, then immediately made some good plays
He used to get down on himself after making a mistake or two. But not today.
This all may be related to how quickly he used to get yanked for a mistake, and how he gets to play out of it now, too.
Yeah
Rudy was riding that intensity and adoration from the fans at the beginning of the season. He’ll get his head back. At least he’s sensitive when he’s shooting poorly; he only took 4 shots tonight.

Sergio's game has been pretty solid for the last 5 games or so. Rudy seems to be hitting some sort of wall...
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
rudy has made sergio look better too
there have been a couple times i’ve notice sergio trying to push the ball and then rudy communicates to back off and let the offense get set (per nate style), this has led to good looks usaully and a sergio dime or dare i say falling jumper!
Sergio made a lot more Nash/Parker style drives and short passes around the basket today
Often he just dribbles back to the halfcourt line and the clock ticks down while nothing happens. I like that Sergio much better, even if he does turn it over once or twice due to that.
Anyone else worried about the chemistry when Webster comes back?
--
by CaptainSexyJacob on Nov 30, 2008 3:06 PM PST reply actions
Yes, but yet, not in the least!
They all know Martell. There will be an adjustment, but he’s been with them the whole time.
Remember when he played with them in the first preseason game?
I think there will be some fallout from the person whose minutes drop (Frye?), but Martell can slip into either Batum or Outlaw’s role nicely.
frye would accept pine
i think travis will too — he can see how good batum is
ignacio
I think Frye would take the pine too
I think he’d privately talk to KP and Nate, and let them know he’d be open to being included in a trade if this is his fate. But he wouldn’t take it out on the team. Frye comes across as very classy in that way. Joel too.
I’m still a little worried about Travis. As long as he thinks his minutes will return, he’ll be cool. But if he stops getting 20-25 per game for a month or two, I’m worried he’ll lose his contentment.
I’m hopeful Travis would handle the situation similarly to Frye, but I don’t have as good a feel on him either way.
travis is expendable
sorry……he can lose his contentment im fine with that. Martell and Batum > Outlaw

ive stuck up for outlaw, but youre probably right
hes not playing well lately — hes not confident…. hes friends with brandon, so im sure brandon helps him read the tea leaves. it’s not exactly a mystery that batum has just outplayed him (though i was glad he hit those two 3s today)
ignacio
i mean again, dont get me wrong
outlaw has done some GREAT things for us (hits big shots, won some games last year, and is a good guy again), but hes the only player on the team (well and sergio to an extent) that i cringe when he gets the ball. Hes a dribble away from losing it, and again the entire team stands and watches him cause they know he wont pass.

I like Travis a lot. But I've seen enough to know his fate
He reminds me a lot of Jack last year. A lot of good features, but one step forward, two back with him. KP has to be aware of it. I have a feeling Travis knows himself.
true
he still 50%+? but again, he just has never looked like hes under control.

It was dropping, last I saw.
But if he realizes his spot-up shooting is his bread and butter, there will be teams lining up to get him, no matter his defense.
And I’d miss his good defensive plays. They just are often followed by total brain farts.
TONS of teams can use him - he is a great player still
just his skills do not fit our team much, we rely on BALL MOVEMENT, and he just doesnt do it.

Batum is to Travis as AMD is to Intel
Outlaw is seeing what his competition is doing, and is working on his deficiencies.
That’s actually a big positive for Travis, not meant as an insult.
a little bit
I’m not worried about Web, but I am worried about Batum/Outlaw. Batum needs to be on the floor and he has played better than Outlaw this season. Outlaw, by all accounts, is a key chemistry guy for the team but his minutes really should be cut— and perhaps he will even be traded.
Its certainly an issue to watch, but I’m confident the team will handle it.
Boomshakalaka
In the preseason it looked like Webster worked really well with Rudy
Maybe not let him start initially?
No! :)
I really think Rudy/Sergio/Batum would be a great group off the bench. They would bring a totally different energy together.
If it doesn’t work… reverse it. :)
well, let's see what martell is now coming back
batum still looks like a better starter for a while
ignacio
Batum looks like a veteran out there.
I didn’t expect to see him for anything more than McBob minutes after Summer League.

and thinking people were crazy. and then when he dropped, i thought, ohkay, that makes sense. my bad.
of course it’s hard to tell anything from highlights with dunks
ignacio
Yep, it's like that infamous "Yi posts up a chair" workout video.
You’re never quite sure what you’re really getting.
It's not because I don't like what Nic is doing out there, I really do
Webster just looked good when driving to the rim and getting passes from Rudy. That would give us another option (driving and outside threat) while we work him back. Ultimately in January I think he will take back the starting spot for now.
just got back from 'fornia
and it was fun to watch the last two minutes of the Blazers win.
I was kind of surprised to see Nic in there at the end when thee game was still close. His defense looked very good.

Wow !
What a up & down game. The key item is that
our young Blazers (& Roy, Smooth, etc.) are starting
to believe thaey can beat anybody, home or on the road.
The exertion of WILL is an important part of developing that
killer instinct.
The White unit did not play well, but that’s to be expected
from time to time. GO is starting to move better and make good
decisions, Smooth had everything going (TOR just like Sheed)
and BRoy exerts himself when needed. Look out NBA !
COINCAST SUCKS !!!!! KGW RULES !!!!! GO BLAZERS !!!!!
It's GO time !
I'm mad at Comcast for a different reason
NBA League Pass had this game listed as HD today, and I got nothing but regular old SD, even though I have the overall HD package.
I don't think it was filmed in HD at all.
How come there’s almost never HD on KGW games? That’s the only channel I can get digital, so it sucks.
He's still pretty young
And this is his very first season getting actual regular minutes.
He’s the definition of a guy for whom it’s time to be patient with. Him and Oden.
He's doing fine for what he needs to do. He kept it to 3 or fewer shots in his time, which is what you wanna see -- only one of which was a perimeter jumper. They went down today, hurray.
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
I joked over here about one of his shots
He missed a three pointer and I said, “That’s the best time for Sergio to take that three… 2 seconds after the referees blew a whistle”.
Then he goes and nails one shortly after. :) Go figure.
blazers are stocked at all positions
and now they are playing with confidence and trust in each other, and we are winning games, im hugely happy, i would say we are a lock for the playoffs, where we are seeded is up to the guys and coaches
You can't worry about that
If they happen, they happen. Just enjoy the journey. :)
