i would say 2-3 should be the average expectation. anything more should be fantastic

don't you mean

5-0??? That would be the best case. Perhaps you think they will lose one, but the best case is still 5-0 regardless. Just sayin…

I’d be happy with 4-1 though.

Only 8 more games til Quality Pie's next update.

I can’t wait. Here his last fanpost.

If Portland can go 3-2 over the next 5, it’d be 14-8. That would be sweet.

Magic at home, then Utah in Utah and the Clipps here. We’re looking at 16 and 9. Whoa, I gotta slow down. I’m getting ahead of myself.

agreed

while I’d love to see us go 4-1 or 5-0 on this trip, I could live with as bad as a 2-3 record on this trip. There’s no way we shouldn’t beat the Knicks and Wizards, as long as we play our game. Both the Raptors and Pistons are going to be interesting matchups, and I figure we split those two games. As far as the Celtics go, I just have a feeling they’re going to be a little too much for us to handle at this point. My “official prediction” (which, by the way, carries about as much weight as Nicole Richie) is 3-2…but I’m hoping for 5-0!

against detroit

we need a few positives to occur, namely:

  • oden/pryz need to establish themselves early, and wear down rasheed where possible, players like maxiell and amir johnson are kinda like energy players, who can make a difference when they sub kwame/rasheed. channing needs to hit the boards, and not worry about shots tonite.
  • rudy may get extended minutes tonite, as he moves off the ball extremely well and opponents know he is a excellent shooter. chasing rudy may keep prince or hamilton busy
  • i feel batum will be chasing rip hamilton around, however he has a reach and quickness advantage, if he plays screens well he can contain rip to some degree
  • iverson is a ? mark in defense for anyone, he can burn practically anyone on his day, however i see him more as a dwade, let him score his 20 and force other players to beat you
  • rasheed wallace is another player who can also burn almost anyone when he wants to, however i think if LMA uses his feet well and doesnt concede ground in the post, rasheed will have one of those 1-6 3PTA games. need to keep rasheed off the offensive glass where possible too
  • oden should have a clear advantage over kwame brown, as he is quicker/stronger/ and bigger than kwame. all he has to do is establish himself in the post and pass out of there when hes doubled and we can burn the pistons since we normally are unselfish and make extra passes for better % uncontested shots. see: 2nd half against hornets
  • sergios defense against chris paul was excellent, but against a slightly bigger guard like stuckey, he may have to alter his defense. he will need to keep stuckey in front of him, and watch for stuckeys first step as it is quite good, however stuckey likes to drive right, so if the help is good then there should be good results there.
  • turnovers against the pistons need to be minimal as they play at a slow pace too

my tip: im going to out on a limb here and tip the blazers by 4

Your Amir/Maxiel point is a big one

literally…those guys energized plus Rasheed showing up and Kwame thinking he has something to prove can spell trouble

Our bigs need to play hard…not really a game for Trav in the 4..need Channing to be a real 4 and LMA to “play large” as well

your oden/kwame point made me think of something

can anyone tell me why exactly kwame brown sucks so bad? I mean, the guy is built like an pro, I get that he may be a few bricks short of a full load but there are plenty of nba guys like that who are freaking all stars. isn’t he used to the nba speed by now? he couldn’t still be intimidated could he? its really amazing how bad he sucks considering the type of player he was projected to be.

If you're thinking about posting your totally awesome trade idea here. DON'T.

by chrischa on Nov 30, 2008 8:40 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

He has small bad hands

Joel still can’t catch anything that comes at him when he is in motion or it’s below the waist (e.g. Rudy’s fancy passes). Kwame can’t catch anything period. He also makes the occasional mental lapse, like airballing a free throw.

That being said, I wouldn’t label him a complete bust. He is good for five to ten points and five rebounds every game. There have been guys far worse than him. At his current price, he is not overpaid by a lot (which he was in Washington, LA and briefly Memphis). He was just taken waaaaaayyy too high by the Wizards as a very young player straight out of high school. Ahead of Pau Gasol and Tyson Chandler. Ouch. Playing in college would have provided him with some fundamental skills that he still lacks.

by Norsktroll on Nov 30, 2008 8:56 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think anyone expected Tyson Chandler to be this good

I’m still not sure he would be, without Chris Paul.

Makes you wonder if Paul could do anything for Kwame though.

Passing on Gasol (who was already showing lots of promise) was the bigger mistake IMO.

now why hasn’t he learned those fundamental skills? he’s been in this league for quite a while now under quite a few coaches. why would anyone assume that kwame brown actually knows what he’s doing.

Reactions, drive, speed

I don’t think most people remember Joel before he was a Blazer, but George Karl made him sorta’ a tub, a fatty. He wanted Joel to gain weight to be more of a bruizer, and it resulted in the Joel we know and love being constantly hurt, slow, and extremely ineffective.

Before Nash signed Joel, he was almost out of the league a few short years after being drafted #9.

He had lost the weight, and focused on all the stuff he does well (which being skinnier allowed him to be— pretty mobile for a white 7’1" dude, good timing and reactions to block shots, a nose for the ball when rebounding, and tough interior defense). The Joel we got his first year seemed totally different from the capital “B” Bust he was for the Bucks.

Now, I’m not sure what got Kwame drafted so high (I wasn’t following the NBA as closely then), but I’d imagine he dominated HS kids with his big body and it covered up a lot of flaws— and that draft was purty weak to begin with (in hindsight of course there are a few good to great players, but none so obvious then). HS kids were the thing I guess, I dunno…

But in the NBA, his size was great but his athleticism was relatively meager. And it became clear that his small hands prevented him from ever using his great size to rebound or receive passes.

Joel doesn’t have good hands, but he has good enough reactions and instincts to rebound very well… and you don’t need good hands to block shots or play defense. Kwame doesn’t have those reactions or instincts or even the relative mobility that Joel has to compensate, or to use his size.

Kwame isn’t the biggest bust ever, just the most notorious. He isn’t a bad role player, and if he was taken late 1st round or 2nd round no one would joke about him. Being a living joke would weigh heavily on ANYONE of course, and I’d be shocked if that weight didn’t hamper his career sumthin’ fierce.

He is only a big body, without the other intangibles to use it. Joel has severe limitations, but his reactions and instincts allow him to use that big body for SUCCESS. Better instincts, less expectations (at least as a Blazer), willingness to change his body and game to find his niche.

The Rockets technically drafted Joel

But I’m not sure if that was a draft day trade to the Bucks or what… like Foye for Roy or whatever.

I dunno all the variables that went into the signing of Joel for the Blazers, but it’s prolly John Nash’s best move as a GM during his Portland tenure.

The first game I watched Joel for us, he looked totally different. The way he moved was a million times better than his Bucks’ days (not that I watch every Bucks game, but I distinctly remember him as being the prototypical white slow 7 foot stiff taken way too high in the draft).

Getting the Joel we got then was a steal of a deal, and getting him now for MLE level money is still a steal of a deal. 7 footers be expensive, yo! He cheap as chips.

by Mortimer on Nov 30, 2008 11:36 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It was a draft day trade for Jason Collier

Who sadly died from a heart condition during his short and fairly unimpressive NBA career (Rockets, Hawks). So Bucks fans shouldn’t be too angry about what they got from Joel.

I'm thinking the real value of this trip is to continue the learning curve

These guys know they can beat some good teams but in adverse conditions on the road they need to learn to bring it every night. If they come out of the trip against Boston and Detroit and even Toronto with the confidence that they can play with the elite then the won-loss record may not be the most important thing.

That said I think they can win three.

winning despite of oden.

I love Greg Oden. I’m your over zealous Oden fanboy/Blazer Homer, but i really feel like a lot of our wins are despite of greg oden. I feel like we need to get Oden 15-25min a game to get him experience but that our best chance to win is with Priz or LA at the 5 currently.

I know Oden is our future but does anyone else feel like putting him out there hurts the team and is just putting him out there because he needs minutes? I really felt this way when priz was in late against the hornets and oden didnt really factor in.

Oden was effective drawing fouls and getting the hornets into foul trouble early in the 3rd where we exploded in FT attempts. i just felt like he is a huge liability in the 4th when we cant afford to turn the ball over.

please tell me im being irrational.

I think you're being irrational

It is a fact that oden is not playing great, but he’s rebounding well and defending the post pretty well imo.
Oden is cutting into some Frye playing time too and he’s already way better than Frye.
Another factor is that he allows Przybilla to play less worried about fouls.
So , overall I think his effect is positive, but way less than we hope it will be in the future.

I actually do believe he’s a good coach. I think he needs better assistants, but he’s a good head.

Quick asked Nate about that point blank last year.

Nate responded that he had to make a choice between winning (with Pryz) and development (with Frye). So Nate was well aware of the value of Pryz in late game situations.

by zaruga on Nov 30, 2008 9:45 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

First, good catch. I missed that.

Doesn’t change my questioning of the decision (Frye ain’t a center), but it’s good to be aware of.

by Timmay! on Nov 30, 2008 9:49 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Roster instability

I get the feeling that at the time they were more heavily considering the idea of trading for a PG or SF, and that Pryz was going to be a part of that deal due to his value as a backup C, and potentially the makeup of his contract. So Nate may have been hedging his bets in case Frye was Oden’s only backup (or possibly that Oden might not come back?). At very least he wanted to make sure that Frye was used to those situations. Frye did a great job in the early season at the C position, and I remember it being said when he was drafted that he was expected to play PF and C, but they didn’t want him putting on too much muscle so he could continue to be a finesse player. I think they were expecting a bigger contribution out of Frye back then too, since he was the most tangible return from Zach’s trade (KP was quoted as saying they only needed him to average 10 points or more for him to be worth it, as opposed to Zach’s 20-10).

Most of this is just speculation on my part, but there was a reason they felt the need to groom Frye for late game center antics, and I’m just trying to put the pieces together.

by zaruga on Nov 30, 2008 9:58 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Nope, this was right the first time...
Heck, it took 82+ games for Nate to figure out Joel was an asset in crunch time. Hopefully he’ll get there faster with Batum.

Nate was offensively-fixated until mid-way last season. He hoped Frye would give him 4th Q scoring punch at the Center position, which makes the assumption that Frye can play the Center position…

Fortunately, those are the bad old days.

Batum is the reason

why I’m not upset when I see ridiculous trade rumors involving travis. not saying I want to trade him for another project point guard (project point guard sounds like a tv show. can’t mr. allen create some sort of “reality tv” show with a bunch of young nba guards trapped on an island and competing for playing time?). seriously though, I like travis, just sayin that batum would help me get over it like buying a new puppy. a way more efficient puppy.

That aren’t about clearing cap space…we don’t need new personalities here disrupting the flow that is developing..no new personalities, agendas, nothing new to learn….hard enough these guys learning each other….

It's a fine line

If we end up having problems with these players later (minutes crunch, etc), this may be the chance to nip it in the bud, and get a good player back.. do it now. Because by the time the problems manifest itself, it may be way too late to fix it as gracefully as you could now.

I’m also weary of messing with success though.

New "star" showing up

would potentially create all kindsa probs of who is getting paid what, who is stealing who’s minutes…it would impede growth, it would damage confidence, ….and it isn’t needed

guys are beginning to slash to the rim…we got 10 guys who can shoot…more maybe :-) …rudy has been slashing a little, travis can do it, sergio gets into the lane….roy ..what can you say about his left hand…and bayless will slash to the basket someday..

The “dream” point guard…there are only a few and very very few started out that way..do we need someone to put up on that stage and make our guys change what they are doing to create a format for …say a wade or AI or Nash ( well maybe nash :-) ) …but chemistry is key — team play and our 14 deep roster…it is a LONG season…many young legs will pay dividends.

by LetsBlaze on Nov 30, 2008 8:58 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

we got 10 guys who can shoot

And likely 8 (maybe 9) players who can really get meaningful minutes.

If we wait, it could explode and we might end up dumping good players for nothing later.

Like I said, it’s a tough decision for KP.

My aunt & uncle live next door and one of their kids from duckville was home for the holiday and they don't get Versus on the dish...

……………………………. Much beer was consumed and obscenities screamed both ways. It was good fun. But I had to work through the first half and when I saw that the Beavs gave up 252 yards RUSHING in the first half, it was never really a game in doubt when I was watching it.

I ordinarily would have spent my evening watching USC put a good old-fashioned stompdown on Notre Dame, which is a far more entertaining thing to watch from my perspective.

If there’s a god, the Beavs will get another matchup with Notre Dame in some hokey pokey bowl. They can KILL that team, and that’s ALWAYS fun.

If there is one guy I would approve of acquiring in a trade in order to resolve our PG issues, it would be him. The only problem is

Is that Mike Bibby is a really bad basketball player who shoots his team out of games and plays no defense. A ballhog at the end of his career, who even is his prime wouldn’t be a good fit because of his one sided play (though he wasn’t always such a ballhog).

by RiPCiTyBLAZERS on Nov 30, 2008 10:22 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Disagree.

Many are suggesting we need to “clear the logjams” at certain positions. Why? Why would we weaken our team at all right now just for the sake of keeping players happy? Competition is great for young teams like ours. Players don’t ever feel like their minutes are guaranteed, so they keep working hard in practice and in games.

We don’t need a superstar PG to win a championship (Bulls, Lakers, Celtics, etc.). So why get rid of uality pieces right now for something we don’t necessarily need?

Every team in the NBA carries 12 suited players ('cept sometimes the Knicks, ha ha)...

…………………………. there are squabbles over minutes every year on every team. It’s part of life. There’s no sense in having 9 strong players and 3 McBobs instead of having 12 strong players, assuming a choice between the two…

In addition, from the purely selfish perspective of team ownership, having two backups for every position helps keeps salaries down.

Anyone else have DirecTV League Pass?

I need to DVR the blasted game, and last night the game wasn’t listed at all, and this morning it says PORTLAND AT PACERS at 12pm our time, instead of PORTLAND AT PISTONS.

Plus, the recording will end at 2:30pm our time, which is usually not enough time for the recording.

Anyone else getting the game mis-listed on their guide? I set the game to record like normal, but I’m a’feared that the end will be cut off (and I can’t record the “show” on after the set time for the game, as it is a “coming up” thingy, if ya know what I means).

It don't let me

If it was on a ‘normal’ channel (like ESPN or TNT) I could record whatever comes after the game, but since it’s on a League Pass channel (channel 751 for DirecTV peoples), the ‘show’ after it is “UPCOMING: Wolves versus whoever”, and until that game starts it doesn’t allow me to record the blank “upcoming” thing.

Lame.

I hope the recording doesn’t stop.

by Mortimer on Nov 30, 2008 11:24 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh

All those channels are in 3 hours bricks for me so I just record “League Pass” for 3 hours. It’s lame but at least I got that.

Comcast had Portland @ Detroit

But mine always show as ending after 2.5 hours, so 2:30 is normal on my side. I usually set for 30 minutes extra at the end. Today is set for 1h extra since I know I’ll be gone…

by Timmay! on Nov 30, 2008 11:21 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

How DirecTV usually works

Is that a HUGE block of time is set for the games… like it should start at Noon, and the recording should go till 8pm or so.

And then ya gotta record the whole block (which is annoying, but at least ya don’t miss any of the game normally).

So for me, to have only the 2.5hr block is disconcerting, and that it won’t let me record whatever comes after it bums me out.

Now I know how the families of murder victims feel :-(

Awesome. (I don’t know what that is, so I’ve totally impressed myself by doing so.)

its on KGW...

maybe it will be in High DEF

by Blazerland on Nov 30, 2008 11:40 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

While looking last night

To make sure the game was televised on league pass, I saw that the Pistons were broadcasting the game in Hi-Def, so KGW should be showing the game that way as well.

If not, RAISE HELL.

Interesting game

Because Portland especially needs Greg’s inside presence. I have a feeling we’re going to be inconsistent from the perimeter this afternoon due to Detroit’s above-average perimeter D, so picking up points in the paint will be important.

by Samuelson on Nov 30, 2008 12:05 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

depends how detroit

defends oden and whether kwame can stop oden.

we all know oden cant really be stopped, so if oden can just score twice in a good scoring position, the pistons will double oden and give one of our shooters a decent look. if the perimeter shots start falling then LMA can get to work.

so many x factors in this game, i still think the blazers will win though
